Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Brazil vs. Australia

After all the Nike-sponsored hype coming into this tournament, the Champions were distinctly underwhelming in their first match and needed a wonder strike from the boy Kaka to overturn an ordinary Croatia, while the Socceroos impressed a lot of people with their glorious Tim Cahill-inspired comeback against Japan. Will the Champions show up today to answer the critics who drooled over Argentina's display against Serbia? And have the Brazil camp been able to keep Big Ron away from the cream buns? We'll see next.

afternoon fellas.
I am home from my outdoor game in 90 degreee weather.
We won 4-3. We were 3-0 up, then 3-2, 4-2, 4-3. I scored our fourth. I have been playing like crap the whole season. In previous seasons, I have scored double figures for seven games. This season, after six games, I have scored TWO. Hopeless.
Anyway, as for this game. I am actually rooting for the Aussies. I am getting fed up with the Brazilians.

Hey there, Dave. I agree with you. I'm completely fed up with the overhyped Brazilians. They've shown only mere flashes of individual brilliance but they are not clicking as a team.

Well done with the winning goal today - good to hear that you're still scoring.

What did you make of the Croatia-Japan match? Crap, eh? It's as if something's in the air today. Shame that it's all happening in front of a weekend network audience for footie. I'm sick of hearing from Jax friends about all the 0-0 matches in soccer.

Second half starting again...it can only get better than this.

GOAL: 1-0 Brasil. That's a bit better. Nice build up, Ron lays off to Adriano, who's relatively unmarked and buries a neat shot inside the near post.

Can the Socceroos come back from that?

Harry Kewell is coming on to replace the two-goal hero from the other day Tim Cahill - no joy for him today.

And Harry misses a sitter with his first touch. Adriano's having a chuckle about it while he watches the replay on the Jumbotron, as if to say, "I'd have had that."

For once, Harry Kewell looks as if he cares. Has just hit one looping shot over Dida but just over the bar. Shame.

Come on, you Socceroos!

Big Ron is trooping off for the second match in a row with Robinho replacing him. He was better today, but then he couldn't have been worse than against Croatia. Robinho has a quick chance but blasts the ball over the bar.

Fifteen minutes left for the Oz to pull this one out of the fire. Even with three points they must fancy their chances against Croatia, the home country of several of their squad members, including big Mark Viduka.

Did you get locked out again, Dave? Or have you gone to take a nap after all that exertion?

That was a bit better from Brasil. Robinho has enlivened them since coming on. They must start him from here on in. Big Ron is clearly unfit.

Bresciano with a spectacular scissor kick and Dida springs cat-like to save.

Suddenly it's end to end stuff after all of that tedium in the first half. Aussies trying desperately for an equalizer and Brasil having been woken up by those substitutions. I don't think they know how to just hang on for a one-nil win.

Free kick to come from Ronaldinho...this could be interesting....

And it's Roberto Carlos with a big blast into Row Z.

Kaka has a header from the resulting corner hammered off the bar. It's all happening now in the 80th minute.

Robinho picks up a yellow for not taking the requisite ten yards - silly boy.

Big Mark brushes a header from the resulting free kick just wide.

Inches away from Mark Viduka. He just tipped it over Dida and just too high. Shame.

Most teams would bring an extra defender on at this point, but Parreira has stuck on another attacker Fred to replace the goalscorer Adriano.

GOAL: 2-0; With the Aussies pushing everything up, Robinho rockets one off the post and the sub Fred knocks the ball into an empty net.

Full-time: 2-0; I'll be interested to see if Brasil get the critical panning that England did the other day. To my mind, they've had similar starts to the tournament, winning both of their games against inferior opposition without really clicking. Three goals scored, none conceded. If anything, England made more chances against T&T the other day than Brasil did today. Not a lot of flair, but you have to fear a side that wins while playing badly.

Sorry, I wasn't hearing from you so I figured you weren't at the computer. I was just laying on the couch watch the game.
I didn't get to see the morning match because of mine.
I think Australia were very unlucky. They deserved something out of this game.
I hope they don't blow it against Croatia. A draw will do.
Not impressed with the Brazilians at all. I hope they get knocked out soon.
Watch them go win the bloody thing.
I will be able see the first half of the next game. Tom has a game at 4:45. I can't wait til the end of the season.

don't worry, you know that the brazilians are taking a total slating in their press and i can assure you that they are here.

but big ron is so pathetic now it's untrue. and nothing is sadder than the sight of him whiffing on something that he'd rifle into the net two-three years ago. seeing him trundle off the pitch today, subbed again, was no fun at all. what a pity he's allowed himself to go fat-elvis.

i too don't think much of what the fabulous 4 are doing. of ron, ronaldinho, adriano, and kaka, only ricky kaka has shown me anything that i liked. cafu should have seen two yellows today and it's because he can't keep up anymore. it's no longer funny to wonder aloud if roberto carlos scores from free kicks any more--the answer is patently no.

i hope australia can get themselves sorted in their last match so they can go through because i've liked their spirit, harry feckin' kewell aside.
