Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Mexico vs. Angola

Mexico looked very impressive the other day against Iran, while Angola frustrated the Portuguese after going down to an early goal. An interesting match-up to come. Join me?

First commentary match for Rob Stone and Robin Fraser. What? Shep's got laryngitus?

Mexico has come out of the traps quickly, hoping to catch Angola napping as Portugal did. So far, the Angolans have survived the first five minutes.

Nearly there for Mexico; off the post from Pardo. Rob Stone gives Loco the award for Worst Hair. I concur. He basically picked up a yellow from the ref in the Portugal match for hairstyle.

then Torrado must be on a yellow too.

it's worse than the somme out there as yet another player goes down. ref must deal with this wasting time.

Bit of a bore here; Mexico can't be bothered much now because they know what's coming for them. Realistically it's curtains for them whether they come first or second. And Angola really don't have the guile to be able to make this a match. Pace has slowed quite a bit.

mexico should be trying to win this and ensure a first place finish so that they do avoid the Argies for as long as possible. instead, they're messing about with this lot.

if they'd stand up long enough to have a shot, that would be a nice change. as it is, i'm falling asleep.

Half-time: 0-0; This has been a stinker with both sides kicking lumps out of each other. I agree with you Gooner. The sooner these two sides are out, the better.

Hiya, Trev! Yes, we obsessives are still hard at work today. Looking forward to the U.S.-Italy match tomorrow. Will you be watching?

For once, ESPN gives us an interesting piece of information. Apparently all seeded teams have won at least one game, with the exception of the pedestrian French. The surprise side so far has to be Ecuador. Otherwise, pretty much to form.

Second half starting - it can only get better.

If this doesn't get any better soon, I'll be forced to do some of the editing work I've been putting off during the WC. That's how dire this stuff is.

My money's on the wieners getting torched, Trev. After all the hubbub over media comments from Arena and various players, I wouldn't be surprised if he ran out the same side as on Monday - and to pretty much the same effect.

Suddenly a flurry of activity with Mendonca unleashing a fierce drive and then at the other end Franco having one saved by the keeper and then off the line. That's perked me up!

Apparently the Angolan center forward Akwa and goalkeeper Ricardo are both without current club contracts. Big surprise, eh? Akwa's age is listed as 29; I'd add at least ten years to that.

So much for the magic of Brazilian born Mexican forward Zinha. He had the key contribution the other day against Iran but his performance as a starter today has been less than sparkling.

A ridiculous mistake by the Angolan center back lets Bravo in to toe poke it straight at the keeper. He'll want that back, as the footie proverb goes.

Whip out the smelling salts, Gooner Steve!

Unless the pattern changes soon, Angola is heading home. The second African side to be sent home today - not a good day for African sides.

Hull City fans unite! Your boy Rui Marques is making an appearance. Ex-Leeds boy too. (sigh)

Sorry, Trev. I didn't mean to give you that impression. It just seemed for a moment that the traffic was all going toward Mexico - I expected them to score and win this one.

No, Angola are obviously holding on to a draw in order to stave off an early exit. To my mind it's a hiding to nothing, though. It would take a Portuguese defeat of Mexico and a win against Iran in order to move Angola on to the second stage. That's a tall order.

A second yellow card for Andre for an incredibly obvious handball. Now it's all men to the pump for Angola to hang on to the draw.

They're struggling to come up with four nominees for the MOTM award. I'd give it to the fan with the biggest knockers!

Oh, Fonseca should've buried that one. A nice ball from the hard working Pardo wasted by the hirsute one.

I'm a bit sick of seeing groups of fans going absolutely potty while they're team is still at 0-0. I don't care how much an underdog your side is; a nil-niller vs. Mexico is hardly an accomplishment. The point of this game is to stick the ball in the net!

Full-time: A really dull affair. The Angolans are celebrating survival, but it's only a matter of time for them.

Here you see the vagaries of the WC draw. Ivory Coast, a fairly handy side who scored two goals against Argentina and Holland - two of the best looking sides in the tournament - are going home tonight, while Angola, who've yet to stick one in against Portugal and now Mexico, are still in it. Who says that footie is a just sport?

tedious dull stuff. the mexicans deserve a right stuffing at the hands of the argies for this shower of a performance. bloody hell, that was the pants.

fair play to angola. back to luanda with a point for their efforts.

it's good night from me, and bem noite da ronaldo.

How about a tuck-in for Landycakes? He's probably worried about bedbugs - or Gattusos - biting right about now.
