Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

What a fantastic opening day to the World Cup! I was on a contractual obligation trip to Gainesville, but I caught most of the first match in the Hilton bar and then watched the second match when I got home.

I'm so excited by the prospect of tomorrow's matches I can barely get to sleep tonight. The best thing about the first two matches was that all four sides seemed to really give it a go. Has there ever been a higher scoring first game? They're usually cagey, nervous outings, so I was amazed to wander in at the 16 minute mark and find that three goals had already gone in. That bodes well for the tournament.

The ball might have something to do with it. The Rahm and especially the Frings goal were somewhat down to the movement in the light ball. I'm hoping that Becks and Lamps welly it if they get within 35 yards of the goal tomorrow.

Another excellent sign for England is that all four defenses looked as if they might leak goals. I've never seen a German defense that was as porous. Both Costa Rica and Ecuador look suspect at crosses and the Poles just coughed the ball up time and again in dangerous places. I fancy England's chances against any of those sides.

What a surprise in the second match. I'm certainly going to lose some points in the Predictions Game on the Poles because they looked really poor. Ah well.

Tomorrow is going to be epic. Try to get your predictions in on the Predictions Game before we get too deep into the competition to keep things fair. I'll be on early tomorrow morning and will blog live during England - and probably the other matches too. I hope you'll join me.
