Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Holland vs. Argentina Live

As good as Argentina have looked so far, I wouldn't mind it if Holland found a chink in their armor.

Good stuff, lad. I'm here with you for what seems on paper the tastiest match of this round. Let's hope they both come out to play, hoping to secure a match against Mexico, who were poor today.

Here's the Argie side:

ARGENTINA
1. Roberto Abbondanzieri

21. Nicolas Burdisso

2. Roberto Ayala

15. Gabriel Milito

17. Leandro Cufre

8. Javier Mascherano

18. Rodriguez Maxi

5. Esteban Cambiasso

10. Juan Riquelme

19. Leo Messi

11. Carlos Tevez

I'm psyched that Messi and Tevez are in the side. Of course that doesn't mean that they'll play every game, but that Pekerman is probably resting Crespo and Saviola - his top choice. Should be fun, though, eh?

And the Dutch side:

HOLLAND
1. Edwin Van der Sar

3. Khalid Boulahrouz

13. Andre Ooijer

2. Kew Jaliens

15. Tim De Cler

20. Wesley Sneijder

8. Phillip Cocu

10. Rafael Van der Vaart

17. Robin Van Persie

9. Ruud van Nistelrooy

7. Dirk Kuyt

Robben's getting a kip during this one, along with Heitinger, van Bommel and van Bronkhorst. That makes it a rather experimental backfour for Holland. That should make it fun for Riquelme et al.

I am here... I saw parts of the Portugal match.
I just got out of an hour and a half meeting with a crazy parent.
I need a good match to get my mind of the nut.

I know that Kaka won the award for the best name.
How about Peckerman?

3:01 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

do we want the argies to win the group to be in the other half of the draw or will it not matter?

3:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, Dave. Indeed. We need at least a draw from the Argies since they have a five goal advantage over the Dutch. That would put them on course to meet up with the Germans in the quarters rather than us. We'll get either Holland or Portugal - any druthers over those two for you?

3:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

any comments on the PECKERMAN

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I had Pekerman as the best name for the Argies. And Steve tossed in Dirk Kuyt as the best name for the Dutch. It's a shame that Togo coach Otto Pfister is out of the competition now. I would've loved a match-up between Pekerman and Pfister. Ouch!

I've been there with the crazy parent meetings, mate. Been there. I always console myself when it comes to a rough student/parent combo that I only have to put up with them for 180 days; they have to deal with each other for the rest of their lives!

Just put it behind you.

Any comments on the Michael Owen ACL injury? I find it amusing that the "Drop Owen" crowd are all now saying that we can't do anything without him? Make your minds up, will you!

I know but we were walked all over by this woman.... I actually left the meeting early, I had to get out

School board member, by chance? They're the worst!

Bit of a slow start on this one. It could turn out to be a bore. I would think that Holland would at least give it a go - playing Portugal and England before even getting to the semis wouldn't be the schedule I'd fancy. Much prefer Mexico and then Germany.

No, but she is a para in the school district

The first decent chances of the match. First Tevez rakes one across the area. He doesn't look quite as scary now without the cornrows he wears for Corinthians.

Then Kuyt forces a decent save from Abondonzieri. His name always makes me think of Italian food - y'know Abondonza!

That's the 3,000th reference today to the U.S. match tomorrow and the vain hope that the U.S. can pull off a win.

Tomorrow we only have make up exams so there are no kids.
The game is going to be on in my room. I know that quite a few teachers are going to watch it.
I put a sign up on the outside of my classroom charging a cover charge of $5 to get in!!!

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Excellent! That sounds like a scene. I remember a similar comaraderie during the '98 WC when my refuge was a teacher's lounge with a battered old telly; even some of the custodial staff came by to watch and we had a bit of an illegal pool going.

Don't forget that I've promised wear flag lapel pins as nipple piercings if the U.S. manage to get a result against Ghana and get to the second round. I reckon my nips are safe.

Dirk Kuyt gets a yellow for hacking Tevez, who goes down like a sack of spuds. Kuyt's out for the next match.

Dangerous free kick, Tevez gets on the end of it and it strikes the post and goes out. Tevez is so bloody dangerous!

If the U.S. gets through to the next match - i.e., ain't gonna happen.

Nice pull down from Maxi Rodriguez and just wide with the shot.

Blimey, the Serbs are two up already against the Ivory Coast! I don't think they've mentioned the score yet, but they've been giving all of them.

3:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Ivorians now have a goal difference of -4 and with 0 points could end up the worst side in the tournament.

3:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

yes they have. Very observant

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Dutch look really ordinary here; I think we could take them in the quarters if we don't lose any more players to injuries or suspensions.

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Just call me Statto!

3:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

or if we can actually play for 90 minutes!!!
Remember, the yellow cards are erased now.
The only suspensions for the quarters would be with a red

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

2-1 now. I guess we're watching the wrong game

3:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, who would've thought. That second Serb goal looked the result of some hilariously bad defending.

There was some great comedy from the Mexican side this morning. Ridiculous handball from Marquez, second yellow for Perez for dissent, a spectacular penalty miss. I was pissing myself laughing.

I saw the stupid handball
WOW, the US are playing Ghana tomorrow

Fulltime: 0-0 Phew, what a stinker! FIFA should be sending those two sides a letter about not showing up for the match!

sorry, mom was online all during halftime. i was a bit worried at the end of this when the dutch went all out to steal another match from the argies.

did they have this statistic? holland vs. argentina in the world cup has never been decided before the 87th minute before? so when that crazy kid babel woke up, i was having kittens.

still, right result. i kinda wanted the addition of a couple of argies on two yellows or a straight red into the match with mexico. still, can't have everything and they're bound to lose a player on the way anyhow.

how are they handling the simultaneous matches back in the US? here, they play the main match and relegate the other one to their cable/satelite station. dad and i were up pretty damn late last night and we're going to watch the highlights at 10.30pm so that we don't sleep the morning away tomorrow.

tomorrow's my last day for the matches. i fly back on friday and hope that ba give goal by goal coverage. on that delta flight i took back from japanorea, i corralled the co-pilot before the flight and asked him to update us because the us were playing mexico. he did, but didn't say anything about the marquez sending off for headbutting cobi. that i got to see on tape and i still have it.

it's been great and i'm really glad i was able to swing this.

They've relegated the duff matches to the Deuce and played the "Marquee" matches on regular ESPN. They got burned on the Argie/Holland one today, though.

The bad thing is that they give regular updates of the scores during the match, so there's no way to avoid knowing the result. They even break in and show the goals from the other matches. So, I have to admit that I only watched a bit of the CR/Poland match and that's it. I'll tape the Italy/Czech match tomorrow morning and watch the U.S. one live.

The tricky one is the Brazil/Japan one. I reckon that could be as bad as the Argie/Holland one today since Brazil have been out of sorts and don't need a result. I'll probably watch the Aussies and tape the Brazil one to watch later.

Despite crap coverage, the ratings have been excellent for the World Cup, far outstripping the U.S. Open golf and rivalling the NBA Finals. The US/Italy match was the best rated soccer behind the US/Brazil one in 94 and beat the NBA Finals game on at the same time. Good news!
