Cheers, Dave. I'm here. I was waiting for Football 365 to post the teams, but you beat me to it.

Shame that both sides are going with the negative 4-5-1 formation. Didn't Sven just get a pasting in the English press for doing the same? Ah well....

Blogger gatorbob said...

I reckon that all the other wage slaves are at work and will be watching the match on tape later. This is when it pays to be an underpayed public servant, eh?

3:01 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Absolutely.... of course, if it goes into extra time I may have to leave early. I have to teach tonight

3:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

letr's have quick goal here from France

3:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Malouda misses an early half chance. Shame.

Allez Les Bleus!

3:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am not too impressed by Malouda

Ronaldo getting booed

3:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice booing for the wanker Ronaldo and then cheers as he's stripped.

JP reckons there are "English fans" in the audience. Might it be the case that footie fans around the globe are disgusted with this cheating Portuguese side? Figo also getting the same treatment.

3:07 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oooh, Fabien was lucky there. A bit of dropsy. Deco could've been in.

3:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Close by Portugal.
Attacking by both teams????

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Harkes reckon that there will be a "flood of goals" tonight. Has he been watching these matches?

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

JP again surprised by the booing for Ronaldo! What does he think will happen in the Premiership next season? What a numpty!

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not many people making late runs into the box.
One striker and no one else

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A lot of booing going on!

3:11 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

JP: "Some apparently feel Ronaldo was at fault for Rooney's sending off. Others like us blame Rooney." What a wanker!

3:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

oooh, nice shot

3:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

They have to shut down Maniche on those long shots. He can hit them.

3:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What's going on with the French defense today?

3:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

unless he is playing in the blue og Chelski

3:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Does Maniche ever play for Chelski?

3:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

where do you think all the Juve players will go if they go down a couple of division?
Anyone to England?
How about Patrick V taking Roy Keane's place at OT

3:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Henry should have gotten to that

3:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, just needed a toe poke from Henry - where was he?

3:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I was going to do a post of the Juve squad and let people do their picking from the list. Obviously only the Italian players would consider going down to Serie B, let alone Serie C - and I'm not sure many of them will stay!

3:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Too much room for Figo - they've got to shut him down. What's up with Gallas today?

3:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Trivia Quetion:
How many goals has Lilian Thuram scored for France?
When?

3:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The French must get Ribery more involved - he's barely had a touch.

3:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'm going to guess two and that both of them were in the 1998 semi final vs. Croatia. Right?

3:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well done, an OMEN?

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why doesn't TH-14 attack defenders when he's playing for France? Does he have to be at Highbury?

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I hope so; I'd take a couple of own goals. Or a penalty shoot-out with Ronaldo missing.

3:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

By the way, Franz B. was the answer to your trivia question.
Again, I will leave it for others

3:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ronaldo's up to it again, trying to make the case for a penalty there. I guess Sepp Blatter's words fell on deaf ears, eh?

3:28 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Absolutely right. I don't know where the others were on that one!

3:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

you were wrong on question about 2002... got another guess

3:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What do you make of the "Three Yellow Card" idea of Blatter's?

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Harkes... they do earase the cards

Useless cross by TH

3:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I've been thinking about the 2002 squad. There weren't a tremendous number of standouts. I really thought the center backs were the heart of the side, especially Rio, but maybe Sol got the nod?

3:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

You'd think he'd know that; he's been in three WC's!

3:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think it is ok. If you get booked in three straight games then yhou should be banned for the final. I think too many stars are missing the showcase game. Some of the bookings are for sneezing on someone.
I actually agree with Blatter... what in the world is going on?

3:34 PM

Penalty!

3:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Penalty... a dive?

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

come on ZZ

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Goal... Ricardo went the right way again

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Zizou sticks it away clinically! 1-0.

Portugal getting some of their own medicine, there. That was a disgraceful dive from TH - Carvalho didn't touch him. But it couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke! Justice?

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Live by the dive.....die by the dive!

3:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Fabs almost spilled that

3:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Again poor handling from Barthez!

3:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

what a dive from CR

3:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Go on, toss a Yellow Card at Skippy for that!

3:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

We'll need the Olympic judges to sort these two sides out in a moment!

3:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Harkes needs a clip round the ear for all this praise of Skippy. It's as if he'd never played in Britain!

3:43 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ribery is the Hunchback of Notre Dame - jesus!

3:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

he deserved the foul there

3:46 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Was I right with the Sol Campbell nod for All-Tournament Player?

3:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You said Rio... did you answer again?
Yes, Sol was the answer

3:47 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I just checked. You said Rio buddy!!!

3:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, but I guessed again. Sol was my second guess.

3:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time: 1-0 France on a dodgy penalty. Story of the tournament so far, eh?

3:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You didn't guess on the Blogg!!!
It was in your mind

Half time.
I am off to shave for school.
Be back for the second half

3:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I guessed Sol in this thread at 3:33. You can check it if you like. Should I post it on the other thread or let the other lads have it?

3:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Here's the 365 write up of the penalty incident:

"Henry wins a penalty for France. Malouda played the ball into Henry who turned inside Carvalho. The Portuguese player definitely made contact there, and Henry didn't need a second invitation to go to ground."

What's your view?

4:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, nearly there for TH - I'd love to see him get a good goal.

4:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good shot from Ribery - that all stemmed from a lazy flick from Skippy. Would've loved to have seen that one smacked home.

4:11 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Heya Trev! What do you make of this match?

4:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Phew, that was close from Pauleta. The first chance that he's had.

4:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Enjoy it on tape, mate. Hope to see you this weekend.

4:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am back.
I had to watch the kids for a little bit.
Shut up about meeting each other. I am very jealous

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Portuguese will need to go to the bench soon. Nuno Gomes, probably.

4:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I still don't understand why the kids aren't glued to the telly - I thought they were footie fans. What's happened?

4:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

how has this half been?

4:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Figo doesn't have the gas to beat Abidal at this point. He'll need to go off soon. And Miguel's gone off too - they're down to ten men.

What's Big Phil playing at here?

Now Abidal's gone down.

4:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's Paulo Ferreira coming on - another Portuguese that Rooney should split in two!

4:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This half's been pretty scrappy. The French had a couple of decent pops - one from TH and one from Ribery - early on and Pauleta had one into the side netting, but the Portuguese are looking fairly anemic right now. They'll have to make some changes soon.

4:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ronaldo didn't go down there!!!

4:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Amazing, eh?

4:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ref should book Pauleta for that nonsense.

4:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

any cards yet?
anyone out of the Final?

4:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Pauleta's coming off - amazing that. He's their main goalscorer. I'd have pulled Figo who's definitely working on tired old legs. Simao to replace Pauleta. Another midfielder for their lone striker - not nearly positive enough if they want to get this one back. They're basically playing a 4-6 formation now, with no striker. I know that the midfield's the heart of their side, but that's ridiculous!

Wiltord on for Malouda.

4:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

No, amazingly since this was the ref that handed out three reds in the U.S./Italy match there hasn't been a single card yet. Should've been some yellows for these cheating Portuguese babies.

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Thirty minutes to go; if anything Portugal look less dangerous than they did at the start.

Ribery's coming off now.

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't think the Portuguese have a monoply on the diving Robert.
It is an epidemic throughout football. I think they really need to start banning them on video evidence. They would stop immediately when players are banned for five games for diving or simulation. It is a major problem. I am getting abuse from by buddies over here as we speak.

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

nothing like ESPN putting up a graphic and completely hidding Ronaldo as the ball came in the penalty area!!!!!

4:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Henry just did a nutmeg and the commentators were talking and completely ignored it. WATCH THE BLOODY GAME

4:38 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well, obviously not. TH took a leaf out of their playbook for the penalty dive. It is epidemic, but I do think that this Portuguese side under the cynical Scolari are the poster boys for the condition.

I agree - some bans are in order. FIFA should be reviewing the tape after the match and handing out retroactive bans.

4:38 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Finally Big Phil has a positive idea - he's thrown Postiga - who's crap - on for Costinha.

Another gratuitous dive there.

4:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It would definitely stop people from diving all the time

4:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Jesus, Fabien! He's gonna give up a goal one of these times.

You wouldn't want him around your baby, would you?

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Oh my god... what is FB doing?

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He must of thought he was playing volleyball

4:42 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Who is coming off for Saha?

4:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I also think the refs could just start ignoring the pleas for fouls from certain players. That might clear up the problem if players such as Drogba and Ronaldo just never got a call unless they were completely pole-axed.

4:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Carvalaho out of the next match.
WELL DESERVED

4:45 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice! A yellow for Carvalho. He's out for the next match. How do your bollocks feel now, Ricardo!?

4:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ron has booed all night long!!!!

4:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

they can't all be English fans

4:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Henry off.

4:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I agree - I think he's a marked man even in the Champion's League.

Yeah, Henry to come off for Saha. Good move - he's on a yellow.

4:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

How many English fans would still be in Germany four days after we were eliminated?

4:48 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Now Saha has to keep safe. Let' s have no one banned for the fina

4:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Absolutely no heart from Portugal. They're not even launching a siege on the French goal. If anything, the French are looking for a second!

4:49 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Saha book - he won't be involved in the next match either.

4:49 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Saha's not a huge loss - I still prefer Trezeguet as an option. I'd play him alongside TH from the start. And then you still have Wiltord off the bench.

4:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It's a huge loss for him

4:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

four minutes.. from where?

4:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

How many goals have the French given up in this WC - not a lot!

0-0 against Switzerland.

1-1 against Korea

2-0 against Togo?

3-0 against Spain?

1-0 against Brazil

and now 1-0 again.

I can only remember Crazy Fabien being beaten once. Pretty impressive!

4:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Same with Italy.
Doesn't sound too encouraging for goals in the final

4:54 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The French have cruised this one in the second half.

4:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That was a chance

4:54 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'm gonna enjoy the Ronaldo tears in just a minute or two!

4:55 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We hope... Barthez almost let that one go in

4:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Barthez all at sea again on that cross. How does he stay in this side?

4:55 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I Ronaldo crying? WInking?, Wanking?

4:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It has been fun Bob. I am off to work.
Have a great time in DC.
See ya, mate

5:01 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Enjoyed your version.

In the cold light of day you see that as a dive from Thierry? He was around Carvalho who then stuck his foot up and tripped him. Maybe not enough, I grant you, but where's the outrage for the attempt?

I think that the booing came from the neutrals primarily. Everyone is fed up to the teeth with these cheating, playacting, hacking, Portuguese tits! It's been their game play from the start and they progressed to the semis by pissing and moaning culminating in a nil-nil flop-fest over England. And they richly deserve this distinction as cheats. Just ask Martin O'Neill what he thinks of Portuguese football. How about anyone who remembers CL winners Porto.

Here's a country that got quite excited when a generation of players like Figo, Rui Costa, the Pintos, Baia, etc looked like they'd progress from under-21 champions. But they didn't. They were content to paint a pretty picture with their skills, but never bother putting the ball in the net. Then in comes Big Phil who doesn't do much culling... a Pinto here and there and Rui Costas, but basically the 30 year olds and a few bright stars like Peixhe and Simao and Ronaldo. But he also brings in the play acting assassins like Costinha, Petit, Carvalho, Nuno Valente and Ferreira. And they start getting closer to the finals. Not by scoring goals, mind. By falling over, hacking, time-wasting, appealing for punishment of their opponants and generally acting like twats.

I'm sick of Portugal. I'm hoping that losing talismen like Figo and whoever else hangs up their international boots will cause a rapid and irreversible decline.

Good Riddance.
