MTV is 25!
Holy Simon Le Bon! I've just noticed that VH1 is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their parent channel MTV by broadcasting the entire first day of MTV.
I've just seen a video block of Pat Benatar, Split Enz and Nazareth back to back. So strap on that skinny tie and feast your eyes.
By the by, here's another trivia question for the trivia master: What was the first vid played by MTV way back on August 1, 1981?

Of course I know this but I will leave it to others.
Truthfully, I know this
I just went to take a look and it wasn't on VH1 it is on VH1 Classic
Didn't I say VH1? Honestly, Dave the summer break is frying your brain. Back to work wi' ya!
Did you see the new trivia question that I put on the Footie Trivia of the Week thread? Give that a go, eh?
Yes, you did say VH1 but it isn't VH1. It is VH1 CLASSIC.
I will take a look at the question right now.
Buggles-Video Killed the Radio Star.
That's a old crusty one. But here's a question I never hear answered and I don't know the answer.
What was the second vid and by whom on MTV? Any clues?
Correctamundo on the Buggles, as Fonzie would've said. If the rotation I saw is anything to go on it was either Rod Stewart's "Blondes Have More Fun" or the Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket." Both got several plays during the day. But I'm not sure.
One thing was clear from what I saw: they were desperate for vids in 1981. They'd stick in any old shite - Andrew Gold, 38 Special, Reo Speedwagon, Cristopher Cross you name it. But I still remember being glued to it the first time I saw it in the fall of 82.
Sadly, REO Speedwagon were at their height in 81.
I'm sure that there's going to be a book about MTV so it's likely we'll know sometime about who #2 was.
I would like a book about MTV like that SNL book that I wrote.
Are you talking about that oral history that came out a couple of years back? Yeah, that was good. I'd read a similar treatment of MTV, or something written by a genuine music journo guy. My pick - Kurt Loder. That guy must know where all the skeletons are hidden!
Being as skeletal as he is, no doubt. Yeah, that's the book I'm talking about. That kind of oral history of MTV would be worth reading.
Next one I'm going to send you however is "El Diego" Maradona's book. Really fun to read.
Aha! This from today's Slate.com:
"MTV's second video was "You Better Run," wherein Pat Benatar wears a black-and-white striped shirt of the sort that was quite fashionable the last time I went outside."
Damn, I should've guessed Pat. There were a billion Benatar vids that I saw the other day.
Cheers, Bob
