Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The Cech Incident

Unintentional or intentional - you make the call. To my mind, there was no malice - just a freak accident, but the latest news about Cech (apparently he suffered an "indentation in the skull," which can't be good) is that it was a "life-threatening" injury. Blimey.

I think it was a complete accident.
He had a depressed skull and had surgery.
Scary stuff.
I think the Cudicini challenge was worse.

Yeah, I agree Dave. I understand Mourinho's frustration - it's a bit comical when you have to stick John Terry in goal with "Hilario's" shirt on, but these things happen in football. The second challenge (on Cudo) I would've given a yellow card to Songko for the shoulder.

Didier Drogba has come out with a statement today that Stephen Hunt meant to do harm to Petr Cech on Saturday. And he's repeated Mourinho's claim that Cech had full control of the ball for several seconds before Hunt clocked him. I've watched the incident several times and I don't see it.

Davey, that's because the intent isn't there. Hunt simply injured Cech in a legitimate attempt on the ball.

Drogba's not wasting his chances like in previous years, but that doesn't mean he's improved as a person. Don't like him at all and hope he goes off the boil very soon so that I can resume laughing at his pathetic finishing.

Just heard that Cech's been released from Hospital. That's good news. And Cudacini might be back in a week if the Drs. OK his return.

Appropos of nothing, did you guys see the Wikipedia entry on Arjen Robbin? It's since been removed, but there was an entry about how he's got no furniture in his house because he's fanatical about staying on his feet. That's class!

I guess I'll be the holdout here because while I don't think Hunt intended to nearly kill Cech, I do think that he did have the time and opportunity to hurdle Cech right up to the time that Cech put a glove on the ball. To his everlasting shame, he didn't.

And I think the reason he didn't is that he wanted to set out his stall early and let Cech know he was about, to put a body on Cech and make him think twice about coming off his line. A lot of times, the keeper wouldn't be seriously hurt there but whenever you commit a dangerous play, injuring a fellow professional is one of the possible outcomes. Look at us from last season when Sunderland were down two with 20 minutes to go and they sent some gee-up kid on who within 4 minutes broke Diaby's leg. Diaby, who by the way has not played since and who I read on the website is still at least a month away from a comeback in the reserves. I don't even remember the name of the boy that did him, but he also got away Scot-free.

Hunt should serve a ban of some few games as punishment for the dangerous play he engaged in and which resulted in grievous injury and the probable end to Cech's season.

Isn't it amazing that if a player spits at another player, that's a 3 match ban and the FA weigh-in on the issue with the kind of speed that you need a slide-rule to calculate. But some nobody hose of a guy like Hunt does something reckless that nearly kills a guy and the FA sit around cutting the circulation off from their hands that are neatly situated under their over-upholstered buttocks.
