The latest news is that Rio is out of the starting eleven and has been replaced by Ledley King. Not sure the reason for this - late knock? - but there you have it.

No Five Live coverage today again. The Setanta gangsters have the exclusive rights here in the U.S. So I've be following the live text on Football 365.

In other group news, Wales are being absolutely hammered by Slovakia at home - 1-5 is the latest score in that one.

Scotland kick off soon in a crucial tie with France at Hampden.

Here are the sides for today's big match:

England: Robinson, G, Neville, Terry, King, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Carrick, Downing, Rooney, Crouch
Subs: Kirkland, P, Neville, Carragher, Parker, Wright-Phillips, Defoe, Bent

FYR Macedonia: Nikolovski, Noveski, Petrov, Sedloski, Lazarevski, I, Mitreski, A, Mitreski, Sumulikoski, Maznov, Naumoski, Pandev
Subs: Pacovski, Tasevski, Jancevski, Vasovski, Stojkov, Popov, Sakiri

Referee: Markus Merk (Germany)

Looks like the standard 4-4-2. Hopefully Downing and Lamps and even Gerrard will bomb on if the Macedonians set out their stall for a draw, as expected. How much cover do we need at the back afterall. Not keen on Markus Merk as ref - not a good sign.

I am back from Rec Soccer.
Yes, Five Live is blacked out and no TV. I am going to follow text on soccernet.com and am also listening to talksport. They go for live updates and talk about the match. The web address is

Heya Dave! Good to have you on board. Thanks for the tips - I'll check it out.

Yes, the Welsh are getting tonked. Don't know how they've allowed that to happen.

In our group, Russia one nil up against Israel.

12:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A draw would be the best result there?

12:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I wonder how Rio got injured? He is doubtful for Wednesday as well.
Can they still call up Woodgate?

12:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just saw it is a back injury for Rio

12:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Apparently it's a back injury. I'd be in favor of giving Woody a call-up; he's been in decent form for Boro.

What ground are they playing at today?

12:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Old Trafford

12:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree, Russia and Israel nicking points off each other would be great. I'd love to see Croatia drop some points today too.

12:06 PM

Good stuff - no wonder Rooney got the biggest ovation. Old Trafford's usually happy hunting grounds for England.

Did you hear about about what the Reading and United fans were singing a couple of weeks ago.
I don't know the ecxact word bu the United fans were singing "Our one stand is bigger than your whole ground"
Reading replied " Our one stand is louder than your whole ground" I thought is was pretty funny.
Are you listening to talk sport?
I listen it to some Saturdays. It is pretty entertaining.

Yeah, enjoying the Talk Sport with Micky Quinn. Cheers.

Classic quote on Talksport.
They were taking about the old Welsh team.
The old Welsh grit now it is old Welsh...

12:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Poor old leek-eaters. Why are they so bad? You'd think they'd at least have a tight squad that had played together for a while.

12:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Macedonia apparently are playing a 5-3-2. I reckon as the game goes on, they'll just have one up front.

12:16 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Apparently Luis Saha is out of the French team with a knock - are you scared?

He's been replaced with Anelka.

12:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not much of a performance so far from England.
COME ON ENGURLUND!!!

You're the plonker Rodney.

I have been watching the Only Fools and Horse DVD that you sent me lately. I love them.

You know, that was on after I'd left for the States so I don't know it as well as the earlier stuff with David Jason like "Open All Hours" or the later stuff from the 90s that my Mom sent on tape.

12:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sounds like Roon's still off the boil. Maybe a second half substitution?

12:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You really should give it a shot.
The first two seasons the characters were still growing.
Series three it became classic. Give it a shot. I haven't seen a lot of the ones later on but I want to get some more DVDs. Some of the Christmas Specials are great

From the BBC.

Why?

That's odd. Here's a lovely piece of text commentary from 365:

36 min: Robert Petrov tries a spectacular volley from a cross and, although he hits it with power, it has all the accuracy of an American government report to the UN.

Good stuff!

12:56 PM

YEAH... he really stands IRISH!!!!

12:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Irish are losing to CYPRUS!!!

12:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half time 0-0 It's got to get better in the second half. Macca's got to change things straight away because it sounds like Gerrard and Lamps are cancelling themselves out and Roon is hopeless. Perhaps SWP might give us some pace up the right? Bent on for Roon?

12:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Scots have to be happy with 0-0 at half time.

12:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ah, Israel have evened it up against Russia - good result for us there. All we need now is one or two goals here and it'll be a good day.

France have a bunch of baldies out there.
Can you play for France?

no change at half time for England

1:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Gerrard just got booked for a lunging tackle.
He is out of the Croatia match

1:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Not sure the baldness is the key factor.

No changes then.

Cyprus have now taken the lead against the Republic.

1:15 PM

I told you the Cyprus score hours ago.
WAKE UP

1:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

yeah, Christ! We can't lose this one!

1:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

we can't draw it either

1:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Macca must changes this quickly. We need the points.

Scots still drawing.

1:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England have a few chances.
Crouch with a header and Neville should have scored on the rebound.
Good the irish have equalized.

1:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bloody hell - the Neviller has missed a sitter. Good on the Republic.

1:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Okay, a free kick in a promising area - come on, Becks!

Oh.....sorry.

1:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

30 minutes to go.
NOW COME ON!!!!

1:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And they waste the opportunity. Honestly, this is the sort of situation in which Becks would step up and change the complexion of the match with one shot when England were stuck in the mud as they are today. I know that Macca wants to be his own man and change direction, but we could have used a Beckham special right then.

1:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

England really going at them now. Roon just came close with a point blank shot at the keeper. Come on, England!

1:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

SCOTLAND HAVE SCORED

1:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

SWP is on for Downing

1:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And the Russia 1 Israel 1 is a result. And a great one for us. Russia are now on two points from two and Israel are four points from three.

1:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Now we need the three points
SWP has a shot in the first few seconds of being on.

1:36 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, we do. SWP replacing Downing, who I'd forgotten was on the pitch.

1:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rooney is off.

Substituted not dismissed

1:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, about time. Defoe's on. Good move. Roon was not at his best today, and was getting in other's way.

1:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hand bags after a challenge on Crouch
Hope this spurs them on

1:43 PM

1:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Irish are losing again

1:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooh,nearly there from Crouch. He's the most likely to score. Perhaps Gerrard too.

I remember a similar draw against Macedonia in the Euro 2004 qualifiers. It just puts the pressure on the away matches. We'll need a win now against Croatia, who are no mugs.

1:57 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on Scotland!!!

1:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time: 0-0 Not good enough. I can only imagine what Alan Green will have to say on 606 this afternoon. Still, seven points from three - top of the table still. We've got to keep our heads up and make the changes that will be necessary to do the Croats on Wednesday. It's an early kick off at 1 p.m. EST on Wednesday. I'll be following on my laptop in the office. You?

1:59 PM

SCOTLAND WIN!!!!
Well done.

On top of the group that includes France and Italy

Blogger gooner71 said...

Sorry lads, was at the fall festival. I always clean up there with inexpensive Christmas prezzies for the girls in my life.

This result is disappointing as is the news that Gerrard is out for Croatia--who are mugs of the first order, in fact appear as the 4th definition of mugs in Websters. What a pity none of these excellent chances that we had went in. Bloody England. Has there been a time recently when there wasn't that little voice in your head that told you that things could go wrong here? I mean, think if we'd all been stationed at Wiesbaden, and grown up going to 1FC Koln and supporting the Germans. We'd have had some experience supporting a dependable national team. What on earth would that be like, I wonder?

Ah well, roll on Wednesday.

3:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

To say nothing of being stationed at a AFB Salvador de Bahia. Think of it - gorgeous beaches, bit of the samba wafting in the breeze, early exposure to girls in thongs, and talk about footie dependability every four years! Bloody Cold War - why couldn't have the Soviets threatened South America?
