Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Names on Shirts?

An interesting point was made by a Scottish fan on the 606 call-in show yesterday that goes some way toward explaining the contrasting results for Scotland and England yesterday. He pointed out that Scotland have gone to a system of not listing the names of players on the backs of shirts - just #s 1-11. He reckons that this has instilled a team spirit that was on display against France. Meanwhile the focus on star names - as diaplayed in gold on the backs of England shirts - has bred a certain entitlement and laziness among the squad. Why not revert back to the traditional #1-11 system without names and then whoever is wearing #1 is, well, England's #1. Any comments, gents?

Don't like it. I want players names on shirts and big visible numbers too that help identify that player. My vision isn't sharp enough to see that it's Carrick, not Lampard. In those scrums around a corner kick, it's often the only way I can tell who's who.

That goes double for club matches. All of my light-skinned black Arsenal players have shaved heads. Henry, Baptista, Gilberto, Clichy, Jourou. Without names and clear numbers, it would be really hard to tell them apart when the TV is using a wide shot.

I think it was Dick Vitale talking about selfish players that said,
"They care more about the name on the back of the shirt than the name on the front"
Interesting!!!
Of course, Steve has a point. How will we be able to tell the difference between Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe if there are no names on their shirst?

Point taken, Steve, but it's the squad rotation that the Scottish fan was arguing against. Of course the Scots have fewer options, but what the bloke was saying was that you didn't need big names on the back because once you #9 you knew it was James McFadden because he's your top striker, and so on. I think he has a point, because I'm still not sure that Macca has settled on his best side and system, and as some players (Hargreaves, Joe Cole and Owen) become fit again, this will only become worse.

More bad news for England this morning - Ledley King has been ruled out of tomorrow's match. So that probably means a return for Jamie Carragher. Your thoughts?

A FSC program note. They're playing the Brazil vs. Ecuador friendly at 2 p.m. today followed by a replay of the dire England vs. Macedonia match at 5, in case you really wanted to get a wee nap this afternoon.
