Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

With the England friendly against Holland coming up on Wednesday, I thought I'd use the trivia question this week to revisit past England glory. Very simply:

"Who are the top seven England goalscorers? How many goals did they score?" (Hint: after the top four, the last three are all tied on the same number of goals.)

Good luck, lads!

Charlton, Lineker, Owen, Shearer, Greaves, and then you start with the pre-war guys right? Finney, Matthews, Lofthouse, Ted Drake maybe? As for the numbers, no way can I do that off the top of my head.

You've got the first two spot on:

Bobby Charlton - 49 goals.

Gary Lineker - 48 goals.
(I'm sure you'll remember the controversy about his being substituted during his last game for England vs. Sweden in Euro 92 by the "Turnip;" it was mean-spirited due to how close to the record he was)

Jimmy Greaves - 44 goals - is next, though.

Michael Owen is the only current player in any sort of range of the record, currently on 36 goals. Eighteen months ago I'd have predicted his beating the record with some to spare, but now I'm not sure we'll ever see wee Mikey come back, at least to his best.

Shearer is some way off on 30 goals, but I'll leave the other two to the others for the sake of sport.

I think it's unlikely that any current player is going to catch Charlton. It seems inevitable that any one chasing the number gets nobbled, Owen, Shearer, or falls well off the pace right when he looks like he's on fire, Rooney.

What with all the club football and player withdrawals from these friendlies, how really are they able to get it done?

I agree. Charlton had the advantage of getting to play in 106 matches for England - that rarely happens any more. Interesting Lineker ended up with 80 caps - the same number that wee Mikey currently has - so you can see that Lineker's strike rate was vastly superior to Owen's - 49 in 80 in better than one every two games. Also, the player with the best strike rate currently is....you guessed, Peter Crouch - eleven goals in sixteen games!

Just to finish up this topic, the other two England goalscorers on 30 goals with Shearer are Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney. Lofthouse needs special comment because he scored them in a mere 33 games for a strike rate of nearly one a game! However, it must be said that probably half of those goals involved shoulder-barging the keeper into the net!
