Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Champions League Round of Sixteen

It's day two of the Champions League Round of Sixteen. English teams had a whale of a time yesterday and let's hope for more today. Here are the fixtures:

AC Milan v Celtic
Arsenal v PSV
Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
Man Utd v Lille

I'll be in and out during the afternoon but will check in from time to time with you. Come on you Reds (United and Arsenal)!

Here are the Gatorbob picks for today's matches:

* I'd like to think that Celtic could pip AC Milan, but I worry that the Hoops will wilt at the San Siro. Milan go through.

* Although everyone is predicting their demise, I favor Arsenal over PSV. They're only one down from the away leg so a simple two nil win puts them through.

* Without the services of "Goldenballs" I reckon that Real will succomb to Bayern today.

* Definitely ManYoo over the hapless Lille at home. They're already one up and should add some goals to that tally. Only a catastrophe would let Lille through.

I am here. I arrived at home just as they kicked off.
I am nervous

I am rooting for United, The Arse, Celtic and Bayern

Bayern have scored against Real

2:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That goal was scored after 10 seconds.
Roberto Carlos with a mistake punished by Roy Makaay

Great attempted volley by Roon.
From the resulting corner, O'Shea, the goalscoring machine, rattles the crossbar.

Can't believe that Arsenal have left TH-14 on the bench - that'll cost them.

3:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I have a theory on TH.

He is leaving during the summer.
It is playing out exactly how Ruud left United.
An untouchable at the beginnning of the season and then is not really needed in the managers mind half way through

Astonishing.

Shot by Scholes.
Wish he could have found Ron.

From the other games

2007: Over in Germany it is all Bayern and Lukas Podolski forces a good save out of Iker Casillas.

2005: Celtic have started well, harrying their illustrious opponents, but they then allow Milan danger-man Kaka too much space in the box ? but the Brazilian lashes the ball wildly over the bar from 12 yards out.

2003: A good chance for Arsenal as Cesc Fabregas picks out Emmanuel Adebayor but he is unable to apply the finishing touch.

United looking edgy.
Lille don't seem to have a goal scorer.

Free kick chance for Ronaldo

3:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What's the aggregate score of Real vs. Bayern now?

3:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

3-3

3:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

First attempt was blocked by wall but retaken for encroachment. Second attempt, into the wall again

3:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United not looking good at defending set peices.

3:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why are they giving away free kicks and corners to Lille?

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not very impressive by my lot right now.

Everyone says that teams go through a blip during the season at one point or another and that United haven't had one. Well, I think they are going through one right now.
After the those to 4-0 wins in a row, they have played crap against Lille, Fulham, Liverpool and tonight's match.
The problem is that they have won them all

3:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Lille are doing ok.

Some guy fouled Ron and the ref played advantaged and came back and booked the guy for a foul. He actually booked the wrong guy and started to send him off. He then corrected himself.

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United are going backwards a lot

Ronaldo booked for diving in the box

3:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Another chance for Lille.

Bloody Hell

UNITED ARE PLAYING LIKE CRAP!!!

Half time
0-0 at Old Trafford

3:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Everything has reached half.
Only goal of the night is Bayern's after 10-11 seconds.
If it stays like this, United, PSV, Bayern go through. Milan Celtic go to extra time

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A bit boring, eh?

3:49 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

From the Beeb

2043: The big debate over whether Roy Makaay's goal was timed at 10 or 11 seconds is finally settled. The stopclock has it at 10.2 seconds, which is quick by anyone's standards.

3:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on United.
Murder them in the second half.

Started the same.

Lille given the ball and get a shot

3:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What are United doing??

Very bad defending and the ball hits the post bizarrely

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United's two strikers have DONE NOTHING!!!

Saha is out for four weeks as well

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United need Giggs to come on and maybe Smiffy.
That is all they have on the bench

3:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Even if United score, which I can't see happening, wouldn't really change the tie. Lille would still need two goals

3:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Arsenal better get their finger out quick

4:00 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The commentators keep saying "this isn't vintage Manchester United" Be truthful.
This is USELESS Man Utd.

Lille are getting a lot of chances. UNITED AREN'T

4:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Arse have scored. An own goal

4:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

VDS has looked horrible tonight. Decision making has been terrible

4:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

My second to last posting could have been confusing.

PSV scored the own goal for The Arse

4:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Lille have had most of the play and the best chances.
I am disgusted.

4:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Celtic are still doing well at the San Siro

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Half way through the second half.
Itchy bum time

4:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally!!!

Great run by Ronaldo, great cross and a great header from Larsson

4:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

But as I said, Lille still need two goals just like they did before Larsson's header

4:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bayern have scored again. Real and Barc are could both be out.

4:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Smiffy is coming on for the Great Swede

4:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We need Smith to be a striker like his Leeds days. He could be our answer after Henrik leaves

4:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

71,182 inside OT tonight

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Lille go close again.

Still no more goals at The Emirates and not at all at the San Siro. Extra might be needed in both games

4:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Uh oh, from the beeb

2119: Arsenal are well on top at the Emirates as PSV survive a goalmouth scramble, but there are worrying signs as Thierry Henry looks to have picked up a knock.

4:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

9 minutes to go at OT.
Park and Richardson on.
Rooney and Ronaldo off.

United better not blow it now

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

OH NO
PSV HAVE SCORED!!
That could be it.
Arsenal have to score two more in five minutes

4:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Smith with a good shot. Saved

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Real have a pen and van Bommel gets a second yellow and it off

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ruud scores from the spot. They need another

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Silvestre is down hurt. Being stretcherd off and United have already used all three subs. It is, however, already in added time

4:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

From the beeb

2131: Milan escape a decent penalty shout but are throwing everything at Celtic and Artur Boruc is rooted to the spot when Kaka's blistering strike comes off the underside of his bar and bounces to safet

4:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wow, Real get the ball in the net again but the ref sees a handball

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It is going to Extra time in Italy

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Silvestre is only now being taken off. It has been a full five minutes.

Shame about Arsenal and Celtic, but all in all a fairly successful couple of nights for the English. By my count the quarterfinals will feature:

* Three English (ManYoo, Pool, Chelski)
* Two Italian (AC Milan and Roma)
* One Spanish (Valencia)
* One German (Bayern)
* One Dutch (PSV)

And that said, Celtic and Arsenal were knocked out based on one goal deficits. It could quite easily have been five British sides and one from Spain, Italy and Germany.

About time that the pundits took note of this statistic. Year after year we here the old canard that British footie is entertaining but backward in terms of "strategy" (read: gamesmanship). Yet, year after year the English clubs do well in Europe. What gives?
