Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Well, Andorra have let down the side already by allowing themselves to be thumped by Russia 4-0. Bugger!

Blogger gatorbob said...

By my calculations, that puts Russia on top of Group E (at least temporarily) with 14 points from 6 games played.

Wales have held the Czech Republic to a 0-0 draw at home. I suppose that's a decent result but none of us will be expecting Wales to qualify, right?

Double bugger! Israel have just taken the lead against FYR Macedonia. It's 1-2 in that one. It's not looking like a good day for the Three Lions.

2:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Still 1-2 in the Macedonia vs. Israel match, while Croatia are currently being held 0-0 by Estonia. Come on!

Probably the biggest game of this round of matches today is France vs. Ukraine, with the French having plenty to do in the Group of Death, which also has Scotland and Italy. Only two go through of course.

If those results were to hold up in Group E, it would mean that Croatia, Russia and Israel would all be on 14 points, Croatia and Russia having played 6 and Israel 7 matches. England on 5 games at 11 points currently, with potentially a three pointer against Estonia in midweek.

Hey Bob, just looked at some scores.
We really need Macedonia to get a goal, right?

Blogger United We Stand said...

Croatia and Estonia is only 20 minutes gone

2:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Italians have scored against the Faroe Islands

3:00 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Absolutely! That's the one that we really could use a result in. With Croatia and Estonia, it's a mixed bag because we don't want the Estonians to get too much confidence there to go into Wednesday's match with. But come on Macedonia!

Blogger United We Stand said...

The French have kicked off

Blogger United We Stand said...

Bugger, Croatia have scored in the 32nd minute

3:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

You would expect the Italians to get a result away to the Faroes, wouldn't you? It's the France vs. Ukraine match that could have some interesting implications for the group. That's coming up later.

3:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I thought the same about Estonia and confidence.

Here are the standings in that Group of Death:

Teams Games Pts

Ukraine 5 12
Scotland 6 12
France 5 12
Italy 6 11
Georgia 7 7
Lithuania 6 5
Faroes 7 1

So presumably Italy will end up with 14 pts from 7 games after today, but if France and the Ukraine draw today, they'll both be on 13 pts from 6 games. The Scots really have a chance in that group.

Keep an eye on Spain too today. They really need a result today given how well Northern Ireland are performing.

3:10 PM

The Spain game is on FSC right now.
Still nil nil

Bugger, Croatia have scored. 0-1.

The score is 12-12 at half. Sorry, I let it slip

3:16 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, mate. I missed that earlier. I've just had a look at the fixtures for midweek in Group E. Israel have Andorra, so that's three points for them. But the biggie is Croatia vs. Russia. Ordinarily we'd probably want a 0-0 draw, but I'm wondering whether England at some point will give up on the idea of winning the group and will hope for Croatia knocking out some other sides. What do you reckon? What's the best result in that one for us?

3:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

STUM!

3:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sorry, it is now 13-13

I think we should start hoping for one team to burst ahead. We can't afford to have all four teams with a chance

3:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I think you're right. Let Croatia go. That still means that we need to beat them at the new Wembley. It's got to be a Fortress Wembley attitude for the fall, with full points from the three home games. Then we will only have to get a draw from that last game away to Russia. There is no way that we want to be looking for a win in Russia in bloody November.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Bugger, Israel have won!!!

3:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I was worried about that. We still have two games in hand on them, though.

Germany have beaten San Marino 6-0. A bit disappointing - lazy Huns!

Right Davey-boy - I've just heard one of the hardest and tastiest trivia questions that I've ever heard. No way you'll get it first time:

"Which English football club has a pub on all four corners of their ground." (I'll give you a hint - it's not a Premiership side but is a professional side.)

Blogger United We Stand said...

Yikes!!!
Can I try and cheat?

It's 2-3 in the all-Scandinavian match between Denmark and Sweden. The lutefisk will be flying in that one!

Yeah, go on then. Cheat away.

Denmark and Sweden were tying 3-3 and then the Danes(I think fans) attacked the ref and the game was abandoned and Sweden awarded a 3 nil win

4:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well done getting Brentford, Dave. That is an obscure one to tuck away in your trivia pocket. My kind of ground, that one!

They've just shown the incredible scenes from the Denmark vs. Sweden match at half-time of US vs. China on the Deuce. Shocking stuff. Poulsen completely sucker punches the Swede, is rightly sent off and then some mad Danish fan comes running on after the ref. The Danes really should be chucked out of the tournament if UEFA had any bollocks at all. It's strange that the 70s style crowd trouble is starting to creep back into the game, but the authorities really have to stamp it out but quick.
