Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Champions League - Gameday 1!

Well, here's hoping that our British clubs fare better today than yesterday when Chelski eked out a poor 1-1 draw against Rosenberg in a half full Stamford Bridge, Celtic were tonked by Shaktar Donetsk and Liverpool could only manage a point away to Porto.

ESPN2 is showing the ManYoo but in my mind the cracker of the day is Arsenal at home to high-flying Sevilla. Both sides are playing great stuff and I'd love to be at the Emirates this afternoon to watch it. Sadly I'll be in the office monitoring on the laptop. Join me?

I just got home. Fifteen minutes gone.
Looks like Rooney is playing. Boy, did he get back quick. I haven't even seen the line up.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Still no Tevez and Rooney partnership/
VDS Brown Evra Rio Vidic Carrick Giggs Ronaldo Scholes Rooney and Nani.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Heya Dave. Let's go ManYoo for this afternoon. A nice away win to start the campaign would suit. And against those dreaded Portugeezers too!

3:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Prague have taken the lead against Bucharest, in case anyone's interested.

3:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Meanwhile at the Emirates:

"Despite the quality of football on display the Emirates Stadium has been very quiet so far, hopefully the crowd will get going as the game progresses."

Some shock there.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey Bob, just had to run to the loo.
Sporting just had a hard shot saved by VDS

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Of course you did.

One of the French defenders Clerc from Lyons has knocked in an own goal for Barcelona. Rather sporting of him too.

3:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Very nice of them. I didn't think the French did that kind of stuff

3:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Still waiting for an answer from you on my ultra difficult trivia question:

"Which North American club featured the former captains of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland playing for them in the early 60s?"

Go on, give it go!

3:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great save from VDS
Finger tip save from a a curling shot

3:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ohhhhhhhhh! Just replicating the crowd noise at Old Trafford as I don't have the option of getting ESPN2 in the office.

GOAL FABREGAS. With a deflected effort the young Spaniard has put Arsenal ahead. Fabregas tried to cross the ball towards Adebayor, from the right, but Escude came across to deflect the ball into the net on the edge of his own area.

The little Spaniard is tearing it up!

3:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

How about Seattle Sounders

3:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well Done Arsenal. Let' hope both English teams do better than yesterday.

3:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good guess, but I'm afraid not.

3:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

From the beeb

2014: GOAL Arsenal 1-0 Sevilla
Cesc Fabregas is the new Thierry Henry, kind of. The Spaniard lets fly from distance and his shot takes a deflection off Julien Escude which leaves Andres Palop stranded in a different postcode. The PA gives it the big "Cesc Fabreeegaaaas", but that has to go down as an own goal.

3:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hear hear on that. I fear that the Scottish sides won't get out of the group stage. Rangers are in the Group of Death with Barca, Lyon and Stuttgart and Celtic got a rotten start yesterday losing to Shaktar.

3:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Whitecaps

3:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I hate that those goals are counted as own goals, just because there was a deflection. I like the "different post code" comment.

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nasty foul by Nani.
Carded for it.
Sporting have a free kick central but quite far out.
A swerving shot saved by VDS

3:24 PM

Steaua have equalized in Prague

3:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bucharest have equalized against Prague in case you were interested. I couldn't give a toss.

3:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United can be fast on the break but they are not making anything!!!
I don't know what they are going to do. They don't have much of a threat in the box.

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The field is really cutting up

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Half time in Portugal.
Sporting having the better of it.

I have not been impressed with United this whole season!!!

COME ON UNITED!! GET YOUR FINGER OUT!!!

We have bloody Chelsea next!

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am going to miss the Chelski match because I have my own game.
We only have 11 players for Sunday. Can you come and play for us?

3:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Looking forward to that match on Sunday. Come on, Chelski have looked really ordinary this season.

3:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Inter have fallen behind in Turkey

3:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I appreciate the invitation but you really don't want my gammy legs in your match.

3:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What I really want is time to rest on the bench. Having 11 players doesn't do for me.

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just saw Fenerbace goal. Great volley.

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Resting? Don't you mean "pining for the fjords?"

3:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You're right... I am ready to VOOM!!!

3:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Listen mate, I know you and you wouldn't voom if someone put four thousands volts through you!

3:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Second half underway

3:48 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The only reason why I wouldn't voom is because I would be nailed to the bench!!!

3:49 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am beginning to believe this about the Champs. League.
From the Beeb

"So far only five goals scored in 360 minutes of CL action. Boring."
legendaryhotdogman on 606

"Dreadful. An own goal is the thing that puts a British team up in a game for the first time this week. Abysmal."
dirk-kuyt18 on 606

3:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bloody useless.
United have a chance to kick a free kick into the box for Vidic and co.
Giggs passes to Ron and he dribbles and loses it.

3:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Agreed. Unfortunately you can say much the same thing about the top level of the game these days. Defensive tactics have gotten more sophisticated while attacking options have grown more limited.

I notice that whenever I post a great goal from the 70s, someone (usually Sir Trev) mentions how hilariously naive the defending was. So what - that's part of what made it so entertaining.

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United are sleep walking.
Very depressing

3:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Totally agreed.

3:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am totally negative here but United couldn't pass it across the back four without putting the final pass out of play

3:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

More bad news for the British.
Rangers are behind to Stuttgart.

3:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Giggs almost had a free header from five yards out. He jumped too soon and didn't get a good contact.

4:00 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You never answered my answer.
Van. Whitecaps?

4:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't even care if United win this(of course I will be happy) They have been absolutely pathetic. They have been all season.

4:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I rest my case.
From the Beeb

2100: Wes Brown is on the charge down United's right flank. A quick one-two with Paul Scholes and then the most hopeless cross. It's the sort of thing you see on a Sunday morning when someone has run out of puff and hammers it hopefully in the general direction of someone else.

4:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, not the Vancouver Whitecaps. But you're getting warmer.

4:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

YES!!!!
United finally pass the ball around well. Great cross from Brown, diving header by Ronaldo

4:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

You're really missing the Neviller on the right flank.

4:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rangers have scored as well

4:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Lovely jubbly. That will do nicely. And I'm sure that Ronaldo's taking a lap or two or honor around his old stomping grounds at Sporting. Nice moment for him.

4:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's just got better for the Arse:

GOAL VAN PERSIE. Fabregas puts the ball into the six-yard box with the free-kick and, with some dreadful marking from Sevilla, van Persie is left free to stroke the ball home from close range. A well deserved second for the Gunners.

They're home and dry. Good win for them.

4:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good for The Arse.

United's goal was a really good one.

Ronaldo touched it, Rooney, Carrick, Scholes, Brown and a great diving header.

4:09 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Rangers have just equalized - it's looking up for the British.

4:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That is only United's fifth goal is six games.

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You missed that update about Rangers

4:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You don't give a toss but Slavia have taken the lead again

4:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United have some good possession but Roon ends the play with a shot that hit row ZED

4:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nani has a good shot parried ala VDS of last season.
No player in red to get the rebound

4:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rooney off for Saha

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

18 minutes to go.

Roma have scored a second against Dynamo

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Rangers have come all the way back.
They lead at Ibrox

4:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Is TH14 starting for Barcelona?

4:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Anderson coming on for Giggs

4:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good on 'em

From the Beeb

2118: We should see more of that. Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt gives Daniel Alves a booking after the Brazilian full-back gives the international sign for the referee to book an opponent.

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sporting with a point blank header.
Another stunning save by VDS

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Absolutely, I'm happy that refs are doing that more and more like with Chimbonda at the weekend.

4:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United have a corner with 10 min left.
Come on United, get another

Not from this corner

4:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The crowd are not too happy at the moment.

Both teams have actually started to opened up

4:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

VDS gets a yellow for time wasting.

Ron tries to phaf about with it and loses the ball in his own half. Thankfully goes out for throw in

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

PSV and Barca both get late goals to seal it up.

The surface for United's game is horrible

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Saha should have scored.

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

UNited are getting some gaps now.

4:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ronaldo is being substituted for Tevez

He gets a great reception from the Sporting fans.
That is nice to see.

4:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I was just on the phone with the Gooner. He's happy but doesn't want to jinx it until it's all over.

4:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why wasn't Tevez on from the start? It's not like you have a surfeit of strikers after all.

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

two minutes plus added time to go
Come on United

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sporting have a low shot just wide of post.

This would be United's FOURTH 1-0 win in a row.

Who are we? Arsenal of the past.

4:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Two min. of added time.
We're almost there

4:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

one minute left

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That's it!!!!

Phew

4:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not a very good display as a whole.
Better in the second half though.

Looks like a very successful night for the British teams.

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great to spend the afternoon with you.
Talk to you Saturday

4:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TH scores!!!

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not to be undone, The Arse get a late third as well

4:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Inter lose

4:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

My last comment of the night stolen from the Beeb

2138: What a night for British clubs. That's how you do it - take note Celtic, Chelsea and Liverpool.

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great talking with you too, Dave. Sorry I was detained by a group of students there at the end. Super night for the British. Roll on the UEFA Cup!
