FA Cup and Such

With all of the other crucial matches in the various leagues, it's tempting to forget that there are two FA Cup quarter finals. As I write, United are 0-0 with Pompey at half time, while Chelski take on Barnsley on FSC at 12:30. Meanwhile, I'll have my eyes on the Leeds as we try to win another for Macca against lowly Bournemouth. Should be a good day of footer. Join me?

Oh dear, it's all going pear-shaped for Davey's Red Devil's at Old Trafford as Tomas Kruschak has been sent off for a foul and Pompey have converted the resulting penalty. It's 0-1.

9:36 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Into stoppage time at Old Trafford and I've just noticed that Kruschak came on for VDS at half presumably because of an injury to the big man.

Blogger gatorbob said...

And quite shockingly, Manchester United are out of the Cup. Sorry Davey. I know that that's a blow. But where are ya? Your boys needed you this morning and Pompey have benefited from your tardiness.

Blogger United We Stand said...

It is over. I watched it on Skype. The picture isn't good but I could follow.
United did not play well but were unlucky to lose.
VDS went off at half time with a groin injury.
Krushak brought down Barros for pen. It was a pen but there were two players covering behind them. Andy Gray thought it shouldn't be a sending off.
I am, of course, upset but I am pleased for Pompey. I have a soft spot for them and I am pleased they are going to Wembley. Let's hope Chelski can be knocked off as well

Jamie Redknapp just agreed that it wasn't a sending off.
You will have to see the play when Carrick DIDN'T score!!

Morning, Dave. Sorry again for your loss but I'm glad that you can see the upside for Pompey.

I'm settling in to watch the "Spot the Yank" match Blackburn vs. Fulham. Come on you Cottagers!

10:02 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

With United's loss, the Cup is definitely going to take the last UEFA Cup place and only 5th from the leage will be in Europe. The winner or the runner up to Chelsea will be in Europe.

Eddie Johnson has yet to do much for Fulham after his £3 million move from the Wizards. He needs to pull his finger out soon. I'll say it again - a Fulham relegation with six American players on the books would be a disaster for MLS.

It's great to be able to follow Soccer Saturday

Do you think any of the players would stay in the Prem?

10:07 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Since Stoke made the top, they have played horribly. They are losing at home again

10:08 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

No. I reckon that McBride and Keller will retire. Dempsey and Bocanegra would probably go down with Fulham and EJ would probably be released if he doesn't pull his finger out.

10:09 AM

Coventry are beating Norwich

10:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dempsey might have a shot at the Prem

10:09 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Swansea lost last night for the first time in yonks. Leeds start today in eighth. A win might put us back in the playoff positions.

10:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

DId you see that if the decision comes down on the side of Leeds to get the points back, Orient would sue

10:11 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Clint's a decent player but he hasn't proven himself at this level. Unfortunately with McBride's injury he was stuck up front and he's not ideal for leading the line. I doubt whether he's scored ten this season. That's not good enough for a striker and no one knows that he's really an attacking midfielder who likes to drift wide left.

Shame that EJ didn't break through there. Should have been at least a free kick and maybe a red card there.

10:13 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I did. I would imagine that there would be loads of teams ready to sue. We'd immediately be in second place on 65 points and even within striking distance of the Swans.

10:14 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That's nice - Northhants have stuck one in away to Walsall. A great goal for us.

10:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Leeds have scored!

10:17 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Unfortunately Doncaster have gone one up against Port Vale. I didn't expect much but that's not so good for us. Doncaster starting to pull away in the second automatic spot.

10:17 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

YESSSS! Bradley Johnson with the early goal to settle the nerves. That's put us back up into the playoff spots. Lovely jubbly.

10:18 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

From 365: "David Prutton's long ball makes its way through to Bradley Johnson after Bournemouth's Neil Young and David Forde collide. The winger fires into the empty net to give Leeds a 1-0 lead in League One."

Sounds like Keystone Kops stuff from Bournemouth.

10:19 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Do you rate David Bentley? I reckon that Aaron Lennon's much better for England in that position.

10:20 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

EJ has got behind the Blackburn defense on several occasions now but he hasn't made the most of the chances.

10:23 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

No goals yet in the Premiership, so I'm focusing on Division 1. Doncaster have scored a second, unfortunately.

10:24 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't know who is better? Lennon crosses like SWP. They can't get the cross over. Bentley crosses more like Becks.
I was listening to Leeds goal on Soccer Saturday but I was in the loo at the time

10:24 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Of course you were.

I have to say that Fulham aren't playing badly. They usually do well in the first half and then succumb in the second. I hope that that doesn't happen today.

10:26 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

From 365: "Newcastle are looking comfortable against Liverpool and so far they have not been unduly worried by Torres. It is still 0-0 there."

A draw would probably be a good result for King Kev's men today.

10:27 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Again, decent stuff from Fulham on the break through Simon Davies and Jimmy Bullard. Chance from a corner but it comes to nothing.

10:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Still no goals in the Prem

10:31 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bit of argy bargy there after an elbow from Bentley on Simon Davies.

10:35 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

From 365: "Worrying news at Reading as Manchester City skipper Richard Dunne has had to be substituted after colliding with Stephen Hunt. It was, however, a fair tackle by the Reading winger."

10:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Port Vale has got a goal back against Doncaster

10:37 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh dear, "the nightmare continues" there for EJ, the ball ricocheting off his heel from a decent ball. He nearly let Blackburn in there.

10:37 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Lovely jubbly.

10:38 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Carlisle have taken the lead

10:38 AM

Newcastle are frustrating Liverpool at Anfield and at the moment they are building on their improved performance against Blackburn last week.

So have Southend

10:39 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bugger!

10:41 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

You'd have to say that Fulham have had the better of this match. Let's just hope that they can make the most of it.

10:43 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Oldham have taken the lead as well

10:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Liverpool have scored. Le Tissier has said it was such a lucky goal. It rebounds off of Penant and loops over Harper

10:45 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Leeds down to seventh now with that Southend goal.

10:46 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Liverpool are two up

Gerrard to Torres and he scores

10:47 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Torres with his 25th of the season. He's got to be the best striker in the Premiership. He hasn't played that much because of Rafa's rotation policy. He is quality.

10:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oldham have scored against Tranmere. A great scoreline for us.

Hiya Thomas - good to hear from you. Sorry about ManYoo, but are you at least a little happy for Portsmouth like your dad?

11:13 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Steven Gerrard has scored a third for Pool and they're running riot over King Kev's side once again. It must surely be curtains for Keegan before long. Newcastle are well and truly mired in the relegation dogfight now.

11:14 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Matt Derbyshire has come on for Blackburn and it seems like Sparky is going for the win here.

11:16 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oooh, nearly there from EJ. He finds himself some space wide right, steps over a couple of times to lose his defender and rifles one off the angle. Very, very close to his first goal for Fulham. And how precious would that goal have been?

11:17 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And almost immediately Blackburn go straight down the pitch and Morten Gamst Pedersen scores from an open header. Did he foul his defender, Paul Staltieri? Perhaps, but Mike Riley didn't see it.

11:19 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

More heartbreak for Fulham. Clint Dempsey has an open goal beckoning but he just couldn't adjust his body to knock that one in.

11:20 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dempsey goes down under a challenge in the box but Riley seems to be on Blackburn's side today. Shame.

11:22 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Gerrard and Torres are doing superbly this afternoon and the Liverpool skipper has seen his powerful effort well saved by Harper. The Reds lead 3-0 against Newcastle.

11:24 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Clint Dempsey has come off for Brian McBride. So it's McBride and Johnson - the double Yank threat for Fulham. Can they salvage a point for the Cottagers?

11:25 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

YESSS! Neil Kilkenny runs onto Jonny Howson's square ball before firing the ball home to give Leeds a 2-0 lead against Northampton.

11:29 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Surely Roy Hodgson will roll the dice and throw David Healey into the action soon?

11:32 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

More bad news for Fulham as Reading have taken the lead against Citeh.

11:37 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great save by Kasey Keller saves Fulham. They still have a chance here.

Yes, here comes David Healey on for Danny Murphy.

11:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oldham now 3-1 up over Tranmere. Lovely.

11:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

EJ wins a dangerous free kick for Fulham. This must be the chance.

Probably Bullard to take...

And he's stuck it in! Marvelous free kick and what pressure on him.

11:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now can Fulham launch themselves forward for the win?

11:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Healy goes down in the penalty box and Mike Riley has booked him for it. What on earth is Riley doing in this match? Surely a push on Healy there.

11:52 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And that's full time 1-1. It's everything that Fulham deserved.

11:52 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dave Kitson has stuck a second goal in for Reading, so they've done themselves a power of good. It's looking more and more like Derby, Fulham and Bolton for the drop.

11:55 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Lovely jubbly. Leeds have completed their 2-0 win over Bournemouth. A second consecutive win for Macca. Perhaps we've turned a corner.

12:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

If United's penalty claim involved Cristiano Ronaldo, I'm waving play on without even seeing the incident.

12:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well, it has to be said that Chelski has been playing stylish football in the past week.

12:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Barnsley don't have the quality to beat Chelski but they are at least giving it a go in honest fashion.

1:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This is a horrible surface, the sort of pitch I remember from the 70s but you don't see much of anymore.

1:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's an odd formation for Chelski with three wide men and only one out and out striker in Anelka. Presumably they'll have Kalou in reserve in the second half if need be. But where is Sheva these days? I haven't seen him in donkey's years?

1:09 PM

Where are you, Davey? I've missed the usual banter this morning.

Same thing happened to me in the second half, Dave. Who would have predicted those two results, eh? You could have got great odds at the bookies this morning if you'd bet on Pompey and Barnsley to go through, but that's what's happened. The magic of the cup, eh?
