As usual I'll be stumping for people and films that probably won't win. My favorite movie of the year, as you'll all know, was a small German film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film last year.

Still, I would luv it if "There Will Be Blood," Paul Thomas Anderson, Julie Christie, Hal Holbrook, Tilda Swinton, Tamara Jenkins, Sicko or the song from "Once" won an award tonight. Which probably means that they won't.

Here we go, then. Jon Stewart's got it all to do as host. He was pants a couple of years back when he hosted for the first time, but I'm pulling for the boy.

8:00 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wait a minute, they faked me out with the listing of 8 p.m. EST. It's just the red carpet bollocks hosted by Regis now. We've got another hour until Jon is on.

8:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Okay, here we go. Who starts a show like this at 8:30?

Jon's warming up with a few easy Writer's Strike jokes, which seem to be going over well with the crowd.

8:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice shot at Hillary Clinton there from Jon: talking about "Away from Her," "A poignant look at a woman who forgets who her husband is. Hillary Clinton called it 'the feel-good movie of the year.'" Zing!

First award of the night goes to Elizabeth: The Golden Age for Best Costume. Nice costumes, shame about the film.

Nice plug for the upcoming "Get Smart" movie with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway as presenters of the Best Animated Feature award.

8:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Ratatouille wins the award. All you lot with kids can tell me if it was deserved. I'm hearing lots of buzz about "Persepolis" but haven't seen it.

8:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A make-up award for "La Vie en Rose." Nice one. I loved that movie.

8:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Alright, here we go with the big ones. Best Supporting Actor:

Casey Affleck, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"
Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men"
Hal Holbrook, "Into The Wild"
Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Charlie Wilson's War"
Tom Wilkinson, "Michael Clayton"

You'd have to say that Javier Bardem is the favorite but I'd love to see Hal Holbrook or Philip Seymour Hoffman or Tom Wilkinson win it.

And the Oscar goes to...Javier. Yep, I had a feeling.

9:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now, Supporting Actress.

Cate Blanchett, "I'm Not There"
Ruby Dee, "American Gangster"
Saoirse Ronan, "Atonement"
Amy Ryan, "Gone Baby Gone"
Tilda Swinton, "Michael Clayton"

I'm stumping for Tilda but it'll no doubt go to Cate Blanchett. Jon Stewart has already paid tribute to her once tonight. She's a shoe in for her Dylan turn.

And the Oscar goes to...Tilda! Amazing! I didn't see that coming. Nice one.

The Coen Brothers win for Best Adapted Screenplay. Shame. They'll now be known for "No County," which isn't even in the top five of their best movies. Why is this one better than "Raising Arizona" or "Oh Brother" or "Fargo." I don't get it?

9:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Cool, the Bourne Ultimatum won for Sound Editing. I loved those movies.

10:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Okay, here's the Best Actress:

Cate Blanchett, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"
Julie Christie, "Away From Her"
Marion Cotillard, "La Vie en Rose"
Laura Linney, "The Savages"
Ellen Page, "Juno"

An amazing group of performances - very strong.

Come, on Julie!

And the Oscar goes to...Marion Cotillard. Not my first choice, but she was great in La Vie en Rose. Bravo!

10:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Right on - here comes the tune "Falling Slowly" from "Once." Loved the movie; great song.

10:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And they've won - magic. The moment of the night for me. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova going up on stage to collect their Oscar for Best Song. Lovely stuff.

11:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Right, here's the Oscar for Best Documentary. Come on, Michael. Let's go Sicko!

"No End in Sight"
"Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience"
"Sicko"
"Taxi to the Dark Side"
"War/Dance"

And the Oscar goes to...Taxi to the Darkside. They bottled it. Shame.

11:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice speech there from the director of "Taxi." Fair play to him.

11:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Original Screenplay now. I'm pulling for Tamara Jenkins, who I met at a party once. She was a school friend of my friend Cass Miller in Boston.

And the Oscar goes to...Diablo Cody, the hot new thing. Probably going to be Juno's only award tonight.

11:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

My own two cents on "Juno" is that is was seriously overwritten. I've been working with teenagers for a long time now and I've yet to meet one who talks like that, listens to the Moldy Peaches or knows who the hell Soupy Sales was. The movie succeeded despite the screenplay IMHO.

11:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And here's the Best Actor award:

George Clooney, "Michael Clayton"
Daniel Day-Lewis, "There Will Be Blood"
Johnny Depp, "Sweeney Todd"
Viggo Mortensen, "Eastern Promises"
Tommy Lee Jones, "In the Valley of Elah"

Another strong group.

And the Oscar goes to...Daniel Day Lewis. Fairly obvious. It was a titanic performance.

11:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

So now just Best Director and Best Film to sort out.

11:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now it's Best Director time:

Paul Thomas Anderson, "There Will Be Blood"
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, "No Country for Old Men"
Julian Schnabel, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"
Tony Gilroy, "Michael Clayton"
Jason Reitman, "Juno"

It's Martin Scorcese to dole out the prize. I'm pulling for PT Anderson.

The Oscar goes to...the Coen Brothers. That probably means that they'll also win Best Picture. Shame that.

11:43 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And that was a fairly drab and meaningless speech for a drab and meaningless film, really.

11:45 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And we're going right into Best Film.

"Atonement"
"Juno"
"Michael Clayton"
"No Country for Old Men"
"There Will Be Blood"

And the Oscar goes to....No Country. Shame. that.

I guess that's where the country is at right now. Meaningless violence. I'm pretty sickened by the success of this movie.

11:46 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well, it looks like we're going to be out of here early tonight. Without all the elaborate stage production numbers, it's been a brief show. Done by midnight. I can't remember that happening recently.

11:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Maybe it's me but that ending seemed like a real anticlimax. There were some lovely moments, but at the same time there's very little love in the Coen Brothers win tonight.

Sorry I missed this chat Gator. But I agree. I thought the Cohens were off-putting in the careless way they accepted their awards.

I loved when Glen and Marketa won the song award. And I thought it was great that Stewart brought her back to give her speech after she'd been given the bum's rush from the orchestra. They've just got to quit doing that.
