Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Euro 2008 Group A Preview

It's time to start thinking about the Euros, lads.

Group A kicks us off on Saturday:
Czech Republic
Portugal
Switzerland
Turkey

Portugal seem to be the quality side of the group and I'm tipping them to go through as winners, with Turkey joining them. The aging Czechs will just miss out and hosts Switzerland will limp sadly out of the tournament.

Your thoughts, gents?

I have to agree with you with Portugal but my money is on the Czechs to get through. Didn't they win the group with Germany. That isn't too bad.
Of course, the hosts always seem to qualify in every tournament for the next round. Even S. Korea and Japan did. Belgium as well. THE USA!
BUT I can't see either of the hosts getting through this time.
So, it is Portugal and the Czech Republic from Group A

I'll go with the Czechs to win the group and Portugal following them through.

Portugal top, Czechs second. The Czechs have an aging squad and I think that must be the reason you don't rate them, but Turkey...

Turkey flattered to deceive in their qualification group against a very pedestrian Norway, Bosnia, Hungary, Moldova, and Malta. Greece if the word can apply, were the class of the lot, picking up 31 points.

Turkey managed just 24 points against this meagre opposition.

I do agree that the Swiss will be sent packing. Cowbells will be silenced at the end of 3 matches.

I'll defer to you lot on the Czechs. I looked at their squad and saw that big Jan Koller was still leading the line up front. It's a wonder that guy has any joints left!

I also want to mention the Guardian Unlimited excellent Football Weekly podcast hosted by James Richardson, which has morphed into a Euro 2008 Daily for the next month. Magic!

Huge baldy git up front? I'd have thought you'd like the sound of that Gator.

Now, now, I always thought of myself more in the mold of a silky, smooth low center of gravity midfield maestro like Tony Currie.

Portugal and the Czechs but Switzerland to get in 3 0-0 draws before they are eliminated on sheer boredom. Turkey i dislike a lot and its the same with Portugal - that game should be interesting.

I'm with you on this. I'd love to see both the Portugeezers and the Turks dumped out of the tournament early and for the Swiss and Czechs to go through. But my head's overruling my heart on this one.
