Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Like Gooner, I'm all about the ABBA boys tonight. Let's hope that mercurial Inter striker Zlatan can pull his finger out and stick a few in the net.
On a personal note, I once saw the Swedish squad relaxing on a beach in Miyazaki, Japan before their opener in Japanorea 2002. The sight of Henrik Larsson in a gold Speedo is especially burned into the memory banks. Let's just say that he's got a future in Swedish porn once he hangs up the boots.
And we're off. It's a fascinating encounter here. The Greeks are the current champions but obviously no one favors them to do the same again in 2008, despite a good qualification campaign.
Sweden are storming the Greek defenses looking for an early advantage. They're going to be dangerous at set pieces with so many useful players in the air.
Henrik Larsson at 36 has seen this all before, having appeared in five major international tournaments going all the way back to his dreadlocked days in USA 1994 where he led Sweden to a third place finish.
This is the group that England would have been placed in if they'd survived that match against Croatia at Wembley. Would England have qualified from the group. Yes, I think so but then they'd have faced a Group of Death team (France? Holland? Italy?) in the quarters. I fear another early exit would have come.
It's been a bright start but there have been few real chances in the opening quarter of an hour.
Nice move there from Sweden but Wilhelmsson drifted offside at the wrong moment.
Hi, I am here.
I was going to stay at school today but it is in the mid 90s with no AC in the school. I came home!!
I am going to call brother Tony who is out of the hospital. I will comment more when I get off the phone.
Good on you, mate. Welcome! And say hi to Tone for me.
No answer, I will call again in a few minutes.
Who is the color man?
Robbie Musto. Did he used to play? The name is familiar but I can't place him.
Andy Gray obviously had to be escorted out of the ESPN building after throttling Julie Foudy after one too many silly comments.
Zlatan nearly latched on to that one.
Larsson was too unselfish there. He should have gone for goal himself rather than trying to find Zlatan.
And then Zlatan goes close - just nods over the top. A goal is coming.
Adrian Healey has mentioned the score of the earlier match twice now - ESPN still haven't learned their lesson.
The Greeks are playing some atrociously boring stuff here as if they're running out the clock three goals up. Otto Rehhagel really needs to be run out of football for bringing the game into disrepute. The crowd's really letting the Greeks know how they feel.
Half-time: 0-0. Not as bad as yesterday's France vs. Romania debacle, but the Greeks are trying to make it that way. There were some bright moments from the Swedish attack, though, and let's hope they can stick a few in in the second half.
Half time
Sweden on top with what I have watched
Definitely. The noticeable absence of Andy Gray in the half time show. Maybe he ate a bad shrimp?
He was there this morning
Yeah, he was. How's your brother?
Second half starting....
Citeh's Georgios Samaras has come on for the Greeks.
Wilhelmsson had a real chance there with the Greek keeper going walkabout, but his lob was too long.
This isnt as bad as France V Romania but its close.
Hi, Simon. Yeah, the Greeks are masters of nullifying opposition attacks. They've picked up a fair few yellow cards, though. That might be the key to breaking them down.
Free kick opportunity here....
Set piece for the Greeks. This is where they excel....
It's headed behind for a corner.
I'm seriously dozing here. It's either the three hours of sleep I got last night or the Greek midfield play - take your pick.
Another scything Greek challenge, this time from Torosidis on Wilhelmsson, and an inevitable yellow card.
Karagounis burst through the Swedish defense there but he was selfish, trying to lob the keeper.
Half an hour left and certainly time for a change for Sweden. There's where the problem lies, though. Is Markus Allback really the player you want coming off the bench to make a difference? I fear not.
I am here but I was busy getting the pool ready for the boys
Has Greece improved?
The Swedes probably need a second yellow card and a Greek player going off in order to open up some space for them.
Nice goal!!!
GOAL! Sweden 1-0! A fantastic strike there from Zlatan finally breaks the deadlock.
The Greeks really need to come out
That seems to have woken Rehhagel from his slumber. Amanatidis is warming up.
Did you get in touch with Tony? Is he okay now?
Zlatan's coming off to a hero's ovation.
Freddy should have scored but then a comic goal anyway!!
GOAL! A scrappy second goal from Peter Hansson. Freddy Ljungberg should have scored as he was in miles of space with just the keeper to beat but it spun up and Hansson stuck it in at the corner.
Was that as good a strike as Zlatan's?
BTW
Robbie Mustoe has played for
Oxford, Boro, Charlton and S. Wed.
Erm, no. That really was one in off the bum there.
Thank you very much, Bamber.
So,
The Champions of Europe are losing two nil and the Champions of the World lost 3-0.
Not a good display Champs!!
Someone's down with a hammy. Shame
I thought I was Magnus
Who is hurt anyway?
I can't believe that there's still fifteen minutes left in this one. It seems like it's been on for hours!
Nope, today you're Bamber Gascoigne.
Funny story - when I first met Karen, she had several books by Bamber. Apparently he was a notable art historian before he started hosting University Challenge. Who know?
Okay, here is your starter for ten, no conferring
Who won the Cup Final in 1949?
Who were those Swedish WAGS?
Look at all those empty yellow seats!!!
Blackpool?
Nope, it was Wolverhampton Wanderers. They beat Leicester three-one
By the way, there's a fun British romantic comedy called "Starter for Ten" with James MacAvoy in the lead. It's about a college team that goes on University Challenge. Worth picking up on Netflix.
I will keep an eye out for it
I didn't know that! Are you sure it wasn't the workers' control of the means of production?
I just realized that Bamber and the same last name Paul!!
Yep, not quite the same intellect, though. Poor old Gazza.
Maybe it was the Hammers
Good save, Isaksson!
Full time: Sweden 2-0.
Very satisfying result. I disagree with Adrian Healey. I think that virtually puts Greece out, given that they have Spain to come. Russia still have a chance if they can get something in the next match. But good riddance to Greek rubbish.
That's it.
Glad the Swedes won.
I am off for the start of the summer session at the Community College.
I will try and join tomorrow.
Cheers,
Dave
Nice chatting with you, mate! Thanks again for the congratulations. I'm off for a celebratory dinner. Group A tomorrow - I'll catch up with you then.
Again, many congrats
I just watched the show in between the two games.
Andy Gray was getting so annoyed with Tommy Smith!!
Maybe he did quit!!!!
