Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

U.S.A vs. Argentina

Don't turn off the TV! There's one more match. And the Argies are in the mood judging from the hiding they dispensed to Mexico this week.

Unbelievable - three matches in one day. I'm in heaven. What a nice way to relax after a heavy week. I'm here!

I am here. Of course, I am too knackered to do anything. I can't believe how much soccer I have had this weekend.

The sides:

USA: Howard, Cherundolo, Califf, Onyewu, Pearce, Beasley, Mastroenni, Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan, Johnson

Argentina: Abbondanzieri, Heinze, G. Rodridguez, Burgisso, Mascherano, Zaraleto, Zanetti, Messi, M. Rodriguez, Cruz

I'm not sure that the whole Donovan vs. Messi promo that ESPN is doing is fair to either player. Messi's on another planet.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Just heard the national anthems.
Were you at Wembley in '81 for the Argies? I remember their anthem being so long the crowd got bored booing.
This was a short version

I can't believe that Landon has 100 caps. It sort of dilutes the achievements.
The shirts are pretty close from a distance

7:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yep, we were both there. I don't remember the Argie anthem but I do remember Maradona dribbling a maze through the England defenders.

7:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree, a hundred caps for an American player isn't much. Cobi Jones, for example, earned something like 125. They play so many bloody qualifiers against likes of St. Kitts and Barbados that it does dilute the achievement.

The shirts are distractingly similar but they've at least got different shorts. The pitch at Giant's Stadium looks patchy.

We were in high school so I must have stood with you guys instead of sitting with my dad

7:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, Helguera was played in by Messi and really should have done better.

7:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Eddie Johnson to Boro? I don't fancy it.

Nice double save by Howard

7:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bloody hell, Timmy Howard's going to earn his corn tonight. Great double save from Cruz.

7:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am pleased that Howard has found at home at Goodison.

7:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's all men to the pumps, lads!

7:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The US are being sliced apart down the left. That is the opposite side of Messi. YIKES!!

7:54 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Me too, he's a quality keeper and he was never going to find a permanent home at United.

7:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Who is the US right back? He is going to have a LOOOONG night

7:54 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, Helguera and Maxi Rodriguez are cutting them open again and again. Heath Pearce is being introduced to the real world of football and it's not pretty.

7:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Heath Pearce.

7:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Decent cross from DeMarcus but you really want a McBride crashing in there. Dempsey doesn't like to put his head in those areas.

7:56 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good crowd noise for Giant's Stadium. It usually sounds like a tomb for the Red Bulls.

7:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Stay onside, Eddie, for chrissakes.

7:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh dear, the oles have gone up and it's only 12 minutes in. And they haven't scored yet!

Just to let you know, Tony was all set to blog the games yesterday but he was having trouble breathing. It is his asthma. He went the hospital and he was kept in last night and again tonight. He may be released tomorrow. He was bummed yesterday because he had no tv so he couldn't watch the games.

8:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, it's Steve Cherundolo at right back and Heath Pearce at left back.

8:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ah, damn, I'm really sorry to hear that with Tony. Do you have an address where I could send a card?

8:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He still lives at The Meadows.

Free kick to come in from the left...

and Gabby Heinze headed over the top.

8:04 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Gabby should have done better there

8:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Burgisso has picked up a yellow for hauling down Onyewu.

Free kick comes in and EJ heads one goal but into Abbon's arms.

8:05 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why not a penalty? Can you award a pen with the ball not in play?

8:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

U.S. corner to come....

and it's punched out for Pearce to try an ambitious effort from distance.

8:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tomorrow is going to be epic. I'm going to try and get my work done in the morning so that I can clear the rest of the day to watch the matches.

Are you around at all? When does school end for you?

8:07 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'm not sure that you can award a penalty when it's just some jostling before the ball is played.

8:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Helguera has a problem here and the Argie trainer is applying the magic water bottle therapy.

8:09 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Where's Carlito tonight?

8:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I should be around for the second match. My final exams start on June 19th. I am completely done on June 26

8:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

"puts it in another gear"
Well, not as high a gear as Gabby.
I don't agree with Harkes that he was faster than GH

8:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Messi wins a corner....

And Howard claims well.

8:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree - Gabby made Landycakes look like a punk there.

8:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't know if Tevez is on the bench.
Maybe he was given more time off because of the Champions League.
Where is Requleme?

8:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Crikey, that's a long school year! What, did you have eighteen snow days?

8:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We only had one all year!!!!

8:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, where's Juan Roman?

8:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great pass by Messi
Great save by Timmy

8:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Another great save from Howard from Cruz. This is shaping up like that epic Kasey Keller performance against Romario when we won a 1-niller against Brazil.

8:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This is Thomas Who does Number 9 Julio Crux Play for

8:16 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Another dangerous free kick here...

Messi puts it over the bar. Lucky there.

8:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This is Thomas Who does Number 9 Julio Cruz Play for

8:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hi Thomas - Cruz plays for Inter Milan, the Serie A champions in Italy this year.

8:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dempsey gets taken down

8:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, that was a nasty rap on the ankles from Gago.

8:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Decent chance there for Dempsey. It's deflected for a corner.

8:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oi, Harkesy, don't be selling off our Matty Reis to some European side.

8:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wooo - that was tasty from Heath Pearce. Why not have a pop?

8:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey, I am back from putting the cover on the pool.

Thomas says thanks but you don't have to tell him that Inter are Italian Champs. It is stunning how much my boys know.
It makes me a proud papa

8:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Maxi Rodriguez slams one right down Timmy's throat.

8:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, I didn't mean to condescend.

8:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He forgives you

8:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Alright, when was the last time that you saw Eddie Johnson score for the U.S.? Last time I can remember is during the qualifying campaign for Germany 2006, probably spring of 2005 - three years ago!

8:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That's generous of him.

I've just looked at EJ's stats and he's got 11 goals in 35 appearances. That's not really good enough, is it?

8:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Landy's got 35 in 100 caps. Not so clever either, really.

8:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Another great save by Tim

8:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Timmy Howard's really got Cruz's number tonight. Another fantastic save.

8:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Corner played short and a foul is called. They're defending better now.

8:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time: Well, it started out fairly frightening but they've weathered the storm well with much thanks to Tim Howard. The 0-0 scoreline has got to be pretty satisfying for Bob Bradley.

8:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Second half starting...

Messi's being replaced, much to the relief of Danny Califf and co.

Maurice Edu has come on but I didn't see who came off for him...Mastroenni maybe?

8:54 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, a half chance for Landy, but it's deflected out for a corner.

8:56 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

OHHHHHHH, off the bar!

8:56 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great start to the second half for the U.S. Come on, then. Pop one in.

Oh, nice crossfield ball from Beasley, Landy cuts inside but then hoofs it over.

Some good play from the Yanks.

I am being kicked out to another room.
I will check in later

9:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nearly a miracle run by Landy there.

9:04 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

See you later, mate.

9:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Cruz wins a foul on the edge of the U.S. box....

9:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Looks like we'll see Freddy Adu.

9:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I have the room back.

What a shocker of a decision with the red card. What on earth happened?

9:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Mascherano is off now. That was a nasty tackle.

9:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great run by Adu

9:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good display by Adu and by the US as a whole this second half

9:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Adu is being hacked down every time he gets the ball.

That is it. 0-0 but a good display by the US in the second half.

Gabby and Timmy having a good chat at the end of the match

Cheerio

9:46 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time: Obviously a 0-0 against the best team in the world is a mighty satifying result for the U.S. This was the best performance of the three matches this week and sets them up nicely for the qualifiers coming up. Landon Donovan is still the player who makes the difference for the U.S. but it was Timmy Howard who picked up the MOTM award tonight for his multiple saves in the first half.
