Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Euro 2008 Group B

Group B kicks off on Sunday: Austria
Croatia
Germany
Poland

This has got to be a cakewalk into the quarter-finals for the Germans. I'm picking Croatia to join them and the Poles to just miss out. The Austrians are so poor that their own fans petitioned for them to be removed from the tournament!

What do you reckon, lads?

I suspect Austria are so bad they may not actually make it to all the matches on time.

Croatia and Germany to walk this one.

Nice one, Simon!

Rafael Hoenigsberg mentioned on the Guardian podcast that the Germans are expecting matches in this group to be essentially home matches. For example, they're playing Austria in Vienna in a stadium that only holds about 30,000 and they're expecting that 25,000 of them will be Germans!

I agree with all of you on this one.

Why don't I hate the Germans as much as I used to? Did they make that much of a positive impression on me in '06?

Are you guys watching the US Spain game this evening. I think it starts at 5:30
I have to leave to go to Thomas' soccer game. Bugger!! I have soccer games every night with these three boys of mine!
BTW, Matt scored a second hat-trick in a row last night!!
Just like Dad? Probably takes after his Mom though, she scored four the night before!!!

I'd prefer the Poles over the Croats because of Slavan Bilic, who I've not forgiven for his craven cheating that denied Lauren Blanc his only opportunity to play in a world cup.

No-one's going to stop the Germans in this group, and sadly, it seems like the Poles haven't much more in the tank after qualifying.

The Austrians can only arouse mild interest in how rubbish they are likely to be. Will they be the most rubbish nation at this Euros? Chances are very good that this is a yes.

Interesting point made by Dave. The Germans were more entertaining in 2006 and the Italians played the evil role that the Germans played in the past, gaming and cheating their way to an ugly victory. So, I agree. I don't have quite the animus for Germany that I once had.

Still, I've got not real love for any of the sides in this group.
