Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Hurrah! It's Saturday!

We've barely caught our breaths from the mid-week European action and Saturday has rolled around once again. I've got Soccer Saturday up and running and everything is fine.

The action starts with my beloved LUFC taking on Peterborough away. Join me for all the action.

Morning, TBD. We are up and about here in DC. Maggie just left for her 8:30 am match, and Cal plays at 9. This weekend Maggie has three soccer games and Cal two. Yes, I am just a tad bit jealous.

Rolling Stone magazine (available online) has an excellent piece on the real McCain. Well worth a read.

C'mon you Whites!

Morning, Trev! Good to have you on board. I'm a RS subscriber so I'll look forward to seeing it. Is it a Matt Taibbi piece? He's excellent.

Still 0-0 at Peterborough. Thanks for the well wishes. Our away form has been good this season but we need all the luck we can get. We got some good news last night with an Oldham loss that gives us a chance to move up a spot or two today.

The Soccer Saturday feed has been replaced with the set-up for Birmingham vs. QPR, which is not what I want. I'm going searching for my Stellings fix.

Coming up on half-time at Peterborough. If anything, the home side has edged it in terms of chances, but it's still 0-0

Hey Bob, I am here for a while before the boys' footer starts.
I didn't see any of the Soccer Saturday feed. I only found Birmingham QPR

Leeds have kicked off early again!!
When is the last time they kicked off at 3?

7:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hey mate! When I jumped on at 7, there was still a link to Soccer AM, which is usually on 6-10 a.m. GMT, so I clicked on that and got about half an hour of SS. Then the channel went on to this match. It's the only English footer option, so I'm watching it. I don't want either of these mugs back up in the Prem, do you? Haven't we seen enough of Ian Dowie?

8:01 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bugger! I've just gone to make a cup of coffee and come back and Peterboro have taken the lead. This will not stand!

I haven't seen Steve Caldwell lookalike Lee Carsley in a while. He's at Brum apparently.

8:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You are right that we've had a bunch of early kick offs this season. It must be a real pain for our supporters today to get down to Peterborough by noon. Either they'd have to start out in the middle of the night or go down Friday and spend the night in a hotel.

8:13 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Macca's made his first change: Robert Snodgrass on for Jonathan Howson. The truth of the matter is that we've been outplayed so far. But there's still half an hour left.

8:16 AM

Leeds are starting to pile the pressure on finally.

IT's LEEDS TIME!!!!!

8:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, give them a few minutes, mate. But I appreciate the spirit. Neil Kilkenny on for Fabian Delph now.

8:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Fifteen minutes left for the Leeds to pull it out of the fire.

8:33 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now it is bloody Leeds Time! Five minutes left. Come on, you Whites!

8:43 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well that's torn it. A second goal by Peterborough in the 90th minute. That's going to be our second loss of the season, no doubt. I can't believe I woke up early for that bollocks.

Back at 10 for the regular schedule. Cheerio for now.

I'm back and looking forward to the Premiership offerings today. FSC are showing a rubbish WBA-Fulham match but there's no need to be limited to that, is there Dave? I've got the Setanta feed for the Sunderland-Arse match up and running.

9:50 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good to see that that Clint Dempsey gets a start for Fulham up front with Bobby Zamora today.

9:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm hoping to pick up some points this morning on the Ronaldo the Slave predictions forum. I'm currently languishing in 23rd, Sir Trev is in 19th and the Gooner is in 12th. That won't do!

9:56 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

WBA-Fulham have kicked off but something has held up matters at the Stadium of Light.

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It looks really blustery in old Blighty today. Brrrr.

10:01 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not surprisingly, Sunderland are giving it a go from the start, playing a lot of balls long over the top to Cisse.

10:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Jimmy Bullard lines up a free kick....

And it's just over the top.

10:13 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Song might have put a header on target there but the Sunderland player's presence put him off and it ballooned over the top.

10:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Still no goals in the Prem. Leeds still in fourth despite the loss. Millwall are behind to MK Dons, which helps us.

10:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good save Almunia at Cisse's feet. Should he be England's #1?

10:16 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Morning chaps.

Finally found a decent feed and I'm on for the match now.

Song for Nasri. There's impression that like Pires, Nasri needs to settle before experiencing the physical teams in the league.

Walcott's bacon saved by Almunia there.

10:17 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cisse hits a rocket and is tipped over by Almunia. He's causing Arsenal some headaches.

10:18 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal have been tested at corners in the past two weeks. Let's see how they deal with this one.

Cleared out with no problems. To be fair, without Kenwyn Jones, Sunderland don't really have the kind of aerial threat that has been causing Arsenal problems. Cisse doesn't fancy challenging for headers.

10:19 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Robert Green should be England Number 1. Invest in the future and build him up. That Hart kid at Man City if he's English is worth a punt too.

10:20 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Did you read that John Terry rated Kenwyn Jones as the forward that gave him the most problems last year? He didn't even qualify that statement "in the Prem."

10:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This is a really odd commentary team on Setanta, with what sounds like an Irish bloke with a lisp and Liverpool old boy David Fairclough doing the color. WTF?

10:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That just shows you how little JT understands the game.

10:23 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Arsenal are starting to express themselves a bit more. They've weathered the full-blooded early assault from Sunderland.

10:24 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Setanta is an Irish company. They've probably got their first unit of Macmanaman and El Tel up for their coverage of the Man Utd v Blackburn game.

10:26 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Cisse looks a bit skeletal around his face. Doesn't look very well but he's still very quick.

10:27 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Further on Cisse, that Reid bloke must be eating off Djibrill's plate. I haven't seen a player with that physique since John Robinson at Forest.

10:29 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree with you about Cisse. What with the shocking hair and the gaunt figure, he looks more like a character out of a Ridley Scott action pic than a footballer.

10:29 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Have you noticed that since the Croatia match that teams are putting three players on Theo every time he touches it?

10:30 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Walcott needs to use that attention to release one of the forwards or Fabregas. So far, his short passing isn't as good as his crossing.

Having just written that, Theo balloons a cross when both Manu and RVP were lining up to get on the end of it.

10:34 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

OK, what difference does the fact that Sagna was able to evade Yorke's really bad challenge? Does Yorke get some sort of pass because Sagna was able to jump over his studs-first tackle? That's a card for either recklessness or intent.

10:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey guys I am back for a little while
The link we get a lot of times from Setanta is Sentanta Ireland. So, that maybe a reason for the Irish stuff.

Sorry about Leeds mate

10:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good move from Fulham ends with Clint Dempsey rifling one into the keeper's arms. Shame.

10:39 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I was thinking also that Roy and his Emerald army would be of particular interest in the green isle.

10:39 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Welcome back, Dave? Are you around for the United game or do the lads have a match today?

10:40 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Who's been dominating the FSC game?

10:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now Clichy is going into the book. I agree with you, Gooner. Yorkey should have gone in before. It's a shame that he's been reduced to playing a defensive midfield role now in his waning years.

10:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd say more Fulham although Miller just missed an open header for WBA.

10:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I will only be around for the beginning. Tom has a game

10:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Are you watching the Setanta US feed?
I chose the Veetle link. Have you guys downloaded it. It is one that a Mac does work with

10:43 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Clichy is going to have to watch himself. Chimbonda is going to writhe around on the ground over every contact and this ref doesn't impress me with his temperament.

10:43 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nasty challenge there by Whitehead on Denilson. Deserved yellow card. It's starting to get chippy.

10:43 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

BTW, Leeds lost because the SAF factor.
Darren is the manager

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hard to say. I think it might be Setanta Ireland given that the time indicated is GMT.

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Darren who?

10:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not much happening in the Prem.
NO GOALS AT ALL

Of course there are only THREE games.... BLOODY UEFA CUP!! Or should I say the UEFA Europa League.
What a stupid name for next year!!

10:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've been enjoying the UEFA Cup this season. Don't be picking on it. I don't know why they don't just squeeze all the CL matches into Tuesday and play the UEFA Cup on Wednesday. That would free things up for the weekend, wouldn't it?

10:49 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Get the boys into the tunnel and have Le Boss get them regrouped.

There's just no fluency between the forwards and the midfield. I suppose that's Sunderland's intent, but other than defensive discipline, they haven't impressed me.

10:49 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time. Where's me cheese on toast, Dave?

10:49 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

That's sounds good. I think I will

10:52 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I think you do know why the CL has expanded to two nights every fortnight. What you're suggesting limits the television money to one night? Never going to happen.

10:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I agree about the UEFA. They should play all the UEFA on Tuesday and have the CL on Wednesdays.
I enjoyed following Pompey on the website. I turned it on just for Extra time

10:53 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Absolutely true

10:53 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I clicked on the Setanta US link on Veetle but the half time show is Setanta Ireland. The guy has said it about four times. Is it the same thing? Are you watching the same?

10:55 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm watching Setanta Ireland off of a Justin.tv feed.

10:56 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

My link said Setanta US. I wonder if that is what is shown here. The commercials aren't anything but Setanta stuff

10:57 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Me too. Odd advertising at half-time.

10:58 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think the US Setanta take the Ireland feed but don't show the same commercials. When we have a Sky feed, we do get the UK commercials as well.

They're back on at the Hawthorns. Is there some reason why they're kicking this match off a bit on the early side?

11:07 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think we are on time, the match is delayed. Let's hope for a goal to see if we can judge

11:07 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Are you two rooting for Fulham? Most of the Yanks have moved on

11:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd have Bendtner on in a few minutes if the Arse continue to be frustrated.

11:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not really. I still like to see Dempsey do well, though. No love for the Baggies at all.

11:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why don't WBA have a shirt sponsor?

11:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Leicester have just taken the lead at Huddersfield

11:10 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Because West Bromich Building Society who did sponsor them went under.

11:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm going into goal withdrawal here.

11:11 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Speaking of that, how is it that AIG can still sponsor ManYoo?

11:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Arsenal have not shown much. Were they better in the first half?

11:12 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Still no goals in prem. What will the highlights show have to show?

11:13 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

If this is still deadlocked at 70 minutes, I'd sacrifice Denilson for Nasri, and RVP for either Bendtner or Vela

11:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dunno, maybe there will be a picture of Dubya on their shirts next week!

11:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I'd make the move earlier

11:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

FSC have resorted to showing replays of blocked shots. That's how little action there's been at the Hawthorns.

11:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You're right - I'll take the AIG logo after all.

11:15 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Looks like Le Boss is considering bringing on Eboue. Probably for Denilson.

Davey, it's been a match without fluency from us.

Chalked off incorrectly? I can't tell

11:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, RVP's got it in the net but it won't count. Over the line? I'd have to see that again.

11:16 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see the rumor this morning that Keano is interested in bringing Patrick V. to the S of L.
Interesting after their background

11:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! WBA have scored! It's a scrambly Division 2 effort but I'll take it. At least the old onion bag has been bulged today.

11:17 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Goals in both games but only the WBA game counts.
That ball wasn't out in Sunderland, was it?

11:17 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'd laugh if it was switched from AIG to McCain/Palin 08!

11:17 AM

I can't see that. They hated each other as players and Vieira's not up to the work rate that Keano expects of his players.

I think there's a bit too much tinkering with the side. If your coming off a resounding 4-0 win, why alter the side?

And I'm happy to see Fabregas rape Chimbonda to get to that header. That guy gets up my snout and I think Roy will be impolite when he asks Pascal just what the hell he though he was doing.
