Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Patrick's Return?

The buzz out of the Emirates over the weekend was about the return of former skipper Patrick Vieira. He would certainly fill that defensive midfield hole, but is he up to the challenge now? In other Arsenal news, Wenger's sniffing about Daniele DeRossi. What say you, Gooners?

This is an odd one. I know Paddy's had a rough go with injuries, indifferent form, even being gassed in a burglary or burglary attempt. But I remember how he agitated to move for 2 years. And after the first summer when he didn't get it, his form dropped and he became a prick about it.

Ultimately when he went, I was in favor of it. He displayed that he was well into that slide that an older player finds him self in and he didn't end up showing character or leadership.

I'm not sure he's the guy who is going to get into the dressing room and make men out of Denilson, Eboue, and Diaby. He bottled that episode with Roy Keane and he was never the same player afterwards and small timers like Jenas, and Cahill headhunted him with impunity for the rest of his English career.

I frankly don't think he's the one that got away. It would be us granting him a favor that I'm not sure he deserves.

It does seem to violate Wenger's "Logan's Run" style policy of releasing players when they hit 30, doesn't it? I'm not quite buying the story. As for DeRossi, I think he's surplus to requirements at the Emirates. But if you're looking toward Serie A for players, why not pick up a nice solid Italian center back like a Chiellini?

I don't rate the DeRossi story at all. Serbs, Croats, Frenchmen, Dutch, Belgians, and any stripe of African make sense, but with the 50% luxury tax that footballers in Spain, Italy, and Germany avoid, I can't see why an established guy who isn't going to see Mad City type money would move.

Chiellini would be very welcome however.

"Mad City?" I like that. Even better than the more literal "Money Citeh" that I'm reading in a lot of places.
