Carling Cup Fourth Round!
How I wish that my Leeds boys were included in the list of Carling Cup 4th Round fixtures kicking off this evening. Instead, I've at least got the make-up match away to Bristol Rovers to follow. If you're around and paying attention to the ugly stepchild of English Cup competitions, let's be hearing you!

Third game in six days for an injury and illness depleted Everton squad. Spurs should win handily 2-0.
I'm afraid you're probably right about Everton. I'm also concerned about battered nature of the Leeds side after a bruising encounter with Millwall's thugs at the weekend.
Today's Carling Cup fixtures:
Barnsley v. United
Blackburn v. Peterboro
Pompey v. Stoke
Sunderland v. Villa
Spurs v. Everton
I've just noticed that the UK must have already gone to daylight savings as the kick-offs are all still to come. That is, the 7:45 GMT kickoffs will start in about forty minute at 3:45 EST. That's great for me since I'll have chance to watch most of the Leeds match after my class.
Just the 11 changes for Manchester United at Barnsley tonight. Ben Foster in goal, Michael Owen starts with Macheda up front. Rafael, Fabio, Welbeck and Obertan all in the XI.
Hey Bob
I figured you would have figured out about the clocks after Sunday's games and a talk with your folks
I will be here for the first half before i go off to the college.
I have a United link going but it is of Gillette Soccer Special
Good luck to your lot
United are off. No link works with VSS. Trying atdhe
Five Live has not clicked off.
So I am listening just like the old days
My SS link has switched to United
It is almost exactly in unison with the radio
Fabio and Rafael both starting.
Not easy for the commentators
Hey, Dave! I'm back after my class and looking for a big win for the Super Whites!
Nice play by Overtan
Hope he is a good buy
YES!!!!!!!
United score from a corner.
Anderson crosses and Welbeck heads in well at the front post
NICE JOB UNITED!
Link freezes right after the goal. Glad to still have the radio
Got the link back
No links for the Bristol Rovers v. Leeds match so I'll just have to content myself with watching stinky old United rack up the goals against Barnsley.
Bansley managed by Mark Robbins. The player that saved SAF's job. Scored the winner in the 3rd Round at Forest in 1990. United went on to win the Cup and Fergie was on his way
My link on VSS seems to be going strong so far.
United all over 'em
Bristol Rovers' Steve Elliott has already been booked. Snoddy seems to be very active in the early stages.
So how are the kids, mate?
Hey Bob
Goal at Rovers
LEEDS WITH THE GOAL
JB scores
the bloke with the yellow should have been a red
Boys are well
It is in fact Thomas' SEVENTEENTH Birthday
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Thomas - that goal's for you. Happy birthday!
Blackburn are beating Peterborough
I'll send him your regards
Pompey take the lead against Stoke
JB's 8th goal of the season there. All of them in League 1.
Great pass by Owen to Obertan but saved by the keeper
17, eh? Blimey. My nephew Eric is also 17. I can't believe it. Bloody hell - we're getting old, mate.
We're all over Rovers at the moment. They haven't been able to get a shot off. I'd like another couple of goals to rub in our advantage before half time.
YES WE ARE
Barnsley hit the post from a corner
Barnsley fans making a lot of noise. Lots of singing. Great atmosphere. They must not sell prawn sandwiches in the canteen at the Valley.
Some excitement at Sunderland as the home side appeal for a penalty after Fraizer Campbell's cross into a crowd of players.
Barnsley getting close to scoring
STOP IT UNITED
Spurs v Everton starting soon
Peterborough tie it up at Ewood
There was a great comment on the Football Weekly podcast from Barry Glendenning after the West Ham v. Stoke match last week:
He said, "Stoke are really good at playing rubbish football, while West Ham are rubbish about playing good football."
Nice one!
Leeds taking their foot off the gas a bit, allowing Rovers a couple of shots. Come on!
Yummy tackle there from Colace. Into the book. Well in, lad!
I like the look of Obertan. Looks skillful and fast
Never heard of him....!
Lots of Andersons and Da Silvas on the field
He was one of United's summer signings. He is U21 Frenchman
And Fosters!
Games go into extra time and then penalties tonight
Mark Robins goal for United was TWENTY years ago
ooh, Barnsley should have scored there. The ball goes right across the 6
United are playing at strolling pace here. Hardly getting out of first gear.
Goal at WHL, goes to Spurs... Huddlestone
Half-time: United 0-1 up. Satisfied so far?
Sunderland and Villa are scoreless at half
I still don't understand why teams don't want to win this tournament.
They're never going to win the league, win a CUP!
Half time
I am off to college
Best of luck to me and you in the second half
Cheerio
Cheerio, mate!
Half-time at Bristol Rovers: 0-1.
So far, so good. More of the same in the second half please.
Spurs take the lead against Everton through Fatty Huddlestone.
Charlton kick off at Oakwell for the second half. They got a bit of encouragement toward the end of the half.
Owen nearly in there, but he was bundled off the ball in the end. He was put through by Wellbeck, surely the MOTM so far.
I'm not sure why Simon Grayson is continuing with Sam Vokes up front with JB while Becchio is injured. He's been hopeless so far. No goals in about five or six matches. Meanwhile you've got Tresor Kandol and Neil Kilkenny languishing on the bench, both of whom have scored this season.
United still strolling this one.
GOAL! It's wee Mikey on the scoresheet after several nibbles. Superb goal reminiscent of Romario's efforts in the 94 WC. Received it with his back to the goal, turned and nutmegged a defender on the way to slotting it easily home in the bottom right corner.
Dear oh dear. What's happened here?!
The Neviller goes in for a tackle, he wins the ball but his follow-through catches the Barnsley player right on the ankle. He's off with a straight red - United down to ten men!
YESSSSS!!!!!!!
I spoke too soon, of course. Sam Vokes has poked home his first goal of the season for the Whites. All is forgiven, Sam.
0-2 Leeds!
Portsmouth look to be joining United in the next round. It's 3-0 against Stoke now. Simonsen, so impressive at the weekend, is at fault as Piquionne bags his second of the night.
Ten men Peterboro have leveled it again. It's 2-2 at Ewood Park.
Hume goes close for Barnsley. They have a chance here.
Spurs go close as Keane's cutback is just cut out before it reaches Pavlyuchenko. Another worry for Spurs' injury-plagued centre-backs, though, as Dawson goes down injured. He's going to try and continue though.
Now Bogdanovic goes close. Foster just got a touch on it.
Inside the last half hour at Bristol. I'd love a security third goal as I'm sure United fans would as well.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!
I ask and I receive. JB with his second of the night.
0-3 Leeds! Tasty!
Tottenham have a penalty at White Hart Lane. Palacios' neat throughball finds Keane, who steps inside Distin and is tripped. Not a tricky decision for the referee.
365 comments: "Ridiculous. Keane takes the penalty himself and makes a horrible mess of it. Complete scuff, and Howard parries. What follows is pure chaos. Bentley follows up, and his shot is also blocked. Keane then has another go and again it's blocked. The ball breaks to Bale, and once again an Everton body manages to get in the way. The ball breaks to Keane once more, and this time he fires the ball into the roof of the net. He's almost too embarrassed to celebrate."
JB nearly snatches his first hat-trick of the season. Just wide...
Michel Salgado puts Blackburn back in front against Peterborough. 3-2 there.
Sheer dominance from the Whites this evening. 17 shots to 4 for us.
Still goalless and none too thrilling at the Stadium of Light where extra-time and penalties look on the cards for Sunderland and Villa.
Foster's suddenly quite a busy keeper as he makes another good save to keep Barnsley at bay and preserve the two-goal lead. Inside the last ten minutes at Oakwell.
The Baby Faced Assassin in the stands there. He still looks about 17!
Fellaini almost brings Everton back into the game at Spurs, shaking off Assou-Ekotto all too easily before firing a low shot that Gomes does well to turn away. Bassong completes the clearance.
Fabio into the book for a clip on Hume. Free kick in an intriguing area here.
JB comes off to no doubt a hero's applause. Replaced by Max Gradel.
Could be a late winner at Sunderland after all as the home side are given a penalty.
But it's missed! Terrible penalty from Jones and, unlike Keane for Spurs earlier, he has no chance to make amends. Still no goal and Villa breathe again.
It's been all over for a while at Fratton Park, but Nwankwo Kanu has added more gloss to the scoreline and made it Portsmouth 4 Stoke 0.
Down to the last ten minutes at Bristol.
Anderson tries to bend in #3. Just saved.
Game over at Ewood Park surely, as Benni McCarthy's neat finish extends Blackburn's lead over 10-man Peterborough to 4-2.
Vokes has come off replaced by Tresor Kandol. Good outing today for Sam.
Tosic has picked up a yellow for his trouble.
After a couple of weeks shipping goals, Blackburn are scoring them tonight. Another penalty, this time from Nicola Kalinic, makes it 5-2 against Peterborough. That's his first goal for Blackburn.
Marvelous. A couple of Barnsley fans have come onto the pitch and scored a goal. The commentators aren't amused but I am.
Into stoppage time now at Oakwell. United have weathered the Barnsley attack well and will be the first side to go into the pot for the 5th round of the Carling in a few moments.
Sunderland and Villa have ended regular time at 0-0. Extra time and perhaps penalties to come.
United have finished at 0-2.
YESSSSSS!!!!!!
Tresor Kandol, super sub, has added a fourth. Comprehensive hammering.
0-4 Leeds!
Pompey join United in the 5th Round pot after a confidence building 4-0 win.
Into stoppage time at Bristol.
Blackburn will join Pompey and United in the draw for the 5th round.
Extra-time is under way at Sunderland.
All over now - 0-4 Leeds. Marvelous. We're now four points up on Charlton on 33 points. Yeovil at home at the weekend, so that's three more points to look forward to.
That's it for me this afternoon. More of the same tomorrow afternoon with the biggie - Arsenal and Liverpool - the highlight.
I'm back on Wednesday afternoon for the big 'un - Liverpool v. Arsenal. Here are the line-ups:
Liverpool starting XI: Cavalieri, Degen, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Insua, Kuyt, Spearing, Plessis, Babel, Voronin, Ngog.
Arsenal starting XI: Fabianski, Gilbert, Senderos, Silvestre, Gibbs, Eastmond, Bendtner, Nasri, Ramsey, Merida, Eduardo.
Match kick-off is as yesterday 3:45 EST.
Hey Guys.
I am here near the end of the first half and see the Arse take the lead with a corker of a shot by some bloke I have never heard of
Citeh and Chelski are both leading at home
Leeds have scored SIXTH at Rovers!!!
Arsenal's goalscorer
Fran Merida. His first goal for the club and as I said a corker
From the Beeb
Arsenal goal: What a way to score your first goal for Arsenal. Spanish teenager Fran Merida picks up the ball from Craig Eastmond and lashes in a swerving shot at the near post from just outside the area. Keeper might have done better - but a vicious strike nonetheless.
Has Almunia officially lost his starting spot?
I just noticed the time. I thought we were closer to half time. Only 25 minutes.
WOW, Costa just scored a corker as well. Insua with a looping shot!! Fabianski was hardly off his line and the ball still managed to go over his head
Not only have Costa scored an equalizer but so have Scunthorpe at Eastland.... come on Bolton... do the same
Beach balls make their first appearance at the Emirates. Again, near the Costa fans in the right corner of the ground
There has been a second goal at the Bridge but it was for Chelsea
Malouda scores
Costa's goal was their first away goal for a while. They hadn't scored in three straight games away from Anfield
Celtic and Hearts are scoreless at half in the SLC
So, the final eight could be
United
Chelsea
Arsenal/Costa
Citeh
Spurs
Villa
Pompey
Blackburn
Not a bad line up. So much for not caring about the Cup
I have noticed that Citeh have sent out pretty much their starting 11 for these matches. I think Hughes is right. Win a trophy! Same with Arsenal.
With that final eight, only Rovers and Pompey would ruin an extra spot for the Europa League in the Prem
What a scramble in the box but the Arse can't put it in!
Citeh have taken the lead again
Santa Claus scored
last minute of the half.
Still 1-1
I'm back! Hey, Dave!
Welcome back Bob
Half time whistle just blew
As usual I notice that the Arse and Pool aren't taking the Carling seriously. Honestly - I didn't realize that that donkey Senderos was still at Ashburton Gate!
I am a master of bad timing!
Jamie R. and Paul Merson in the studio after the break
All three games are at half time
2-0
2-1
1-1
The Carling isn't proving fertile ground for the minnows this year, is it? Only Scunny left with any shot; otherwise all Prem.
I'm off to class again - I really enjoyed the half time banter. :-}
Me too, I couldn't keep you quiet!
Away we go!
The Arse almost in right away
Just picked up Tom
Missed an Arsenal goal
20 to go
Had to leave again.
Still 2-1 into injury time
Chelsea 4 nil up
Citeh 5-1 up
Celtic lost to Heart of Midlothian
Chelsea win
The Arse have won!
Congratulations Steve.
I will take Rovers or Pompey at OT please
Ta mate. Looks like there will be a red-top stewards inquiry as to why Voronin was wrongly flagged offside and why Aquilani wasn't awarded a pen for Sendaros's handball in the area, but heh, two jumbo fingers up, right?
Peep, peep, peep, final score 2-1 Arsenal. Have a lovely flight back to Merseyland chaps.
