Evening, mate. I'm on board. Thanks for the invite. I'm assuming that "Photo A" is you reacting to the pre-game show. You know, Bruce Arena makes John Kerry seem like the ShamWow guy.

Let's hope that the boys will have you in the "Photo B" mood by the end.

finally the us roster tonight

Perkins; Heaps, Goodson, Marshall, Pearce; Holden, Beckerman, Pause, Rogers; Arnaud, Ching (capt.)

9:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've still barely recovered from that Spurs v. Leeds match. I'd just about given up the ghost when suddenly the ball landed at JB's feet and I thought - "Go on, son. Go on!" What a hero - that penalty was sheer class.

9:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Goodson? Pause? Arnaud?

My lord - if this side lines up against England on June 12, we could see a cricket score!

9:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Do we really want to see the likes of Lee Bowyer, Michael Carrick or Lee Cattermole in HD? I think not!

9:03 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

my first impression is that we should have Findlay(?) rather than Arnaud. I wouldn't write Arnaud off completely but we've seen him already and know a bit about what he's like.

9:03 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wait a minute - different side? There's your man Jeff Cunningham up front.

9:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Marvelle Wynne again. Hadn't we decided he wasn't ready for prime time? Good to see Jimmy Conrad back.

9:05 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Cool. They've gone with a completely different line-up. And Findley is there. So's Cunningham which is a complete laugher. Get it out of the way.

Here we go. Archudlia the ref, a bit of a mug IMHO

9:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The U.S. get us started in the first half at the Home Depot Center.

9:06 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

This is really experimental. Wynne-no chance. Cunningham-no chance.

9:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I guess experimental is okay under the circumstances. Good chance for Bradley to cross some names off the list, I s'pose.

9:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Whatever happened to bringing Jermaine Jones into the fold? Has he had a run out yet?

9:09 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Exactly. There are a lot of players that seem to be possibilities now. Better to cull off the mugs now than in April.

Look closely at Troy Perkins. Timmy is still #1, but I would say that his season has been very mixed.

9:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Decent interchange between Sasha and Benni there but Benni's first touch was heavy.

9:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Conrad picks up the first yellow of the evening. He gave one up for the side there with the Honduran streaking away.

9:12 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

this is not a fifa sanctioned friendly date which is why there are no european players. but jones should be in the fold immediately

9:13 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Feilhaber, Klejstan, a bit light, no? One or the other.

9:14 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yes. that maniac ref comes good with that dive. Nice job ref!

9:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice one - the ref shows the Honduran a yellow for a ridiculous dive. Palacios into the book.

9:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree - and I'm not sure either makes my starting XI. Dempsey, Donovan, Bradley and a holding player probably.

9:16 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Did you like the way that Findley just closed down that defender? Commentator missed it but I thought that it was encouraging.

9:16 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I still think that there is room for Dempsey up front in a tandem or even a 3-man front. I don't like the way his work ethic falls of in the second half.

9:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Beckerman's one I'd say is just about on the bubble. If he has a good start to the MLS season, he might well sneak into the squad. Again, he's well outside the reckoning for the starting XI for me.

9:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - Findlay's looking very lively. I like what I see so far.

9:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not sure about Dempsey leading the line. Ideally he's a guy who likes to drift wide left. I'd still have to go with Jozy and Charlie Davies if both are fit and playing well.

9:20 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i like everything about jah-beck except that ridiculous hair. he's changed my initial impression of his ability but i'd still put the passarella ban on him until he got a big boy haircut

9:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What the eff is this - a penalty? No!

9:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And Conrad's off for a second yellow! JESUS!

9:24 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

look at what clint accomplished when he was pushed up last summer in the confed cup.

pen????? Red????? I told you that this ref is a complete mug.

9:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Pavon strides up and 1-0 Honduras!

No, the referee is really playing silly buggers tonight. He's got him taking it again.

9:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Pavon again...and sticks it in the lower left. Good pen.

Now it is 1-0. What a complete numpty this ref is. It completely changes the complexion of the match.

9:26 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Officiating in this conference is abysmal. That was a very bad red to give. Got to get rid of these horrible no judgment refs. We've got one in the whole CONCACAF now, and he's Panamanian. The Mexicans are particularly bad IMHO.

9:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think that the bloke who picked up the pen was the same fella Jery Palacios who picked up the yellow for simulation earlier. I need to see that one again. It was after the ball was gone so I wasn't paying attention. I had my eye on Pavon taking the shot.

9:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, it was a second yellow. If Conrad caught him, he probably had to go but I haven't had a good look at it yet. I'm not sure why FSC haven't run several replays of it.

9:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Marshall needed to at least put that header on goal. It was a free header.

9:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Who's our left back? We're completely exposed on that side.

9:31 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Bornstein

9:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That could easily have been another pen! Definitely struck Wynne's arm and there was some movement of his shoulder toward it. WTF?!

9:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Okay, that makes sense. He's tucked inside in order to cover the space that Conrad left.

9:33 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Ball to hand surely.

9:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh, that was a complete sitter! What a miss by Epinosa!

9:35 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

three at the back is no good for us.

9:35 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

With this ref, I'm surprised that Wynne survived that one.

9:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not at all. I'd have Rogers off - he's a luxury player for us at this point.

9:36 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Sullivan just brought out the point you made. Both players in the incident were on a card. If he doesn't card Conrad, he'd have had to card Espinoza for a second yellow and a second simulation.

9:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice stuff from Wynne there and a decent ball in.

9:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Probably so. We;ll see at the half. Either him or Klekjstan. He's never impressed me as having quite enough at this level.

9:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

crap corner from Sasha.

9:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Still no replay of that penalty incident. What - we have to suffer through the bank of Jack LaLanne Juice Man ads in order to see it?

9:40 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

yeah, see that. no technique from sasha on that through ball either. he'd be my candidate for an early bathtime.

9:40 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

do you know if the honduran league is in season? most of our guys tbf are not in full season form.

9:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell! 2-0!

9:43 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

too bloody easy that. marshall doesn't get within a mile of the goalscorer. rogers could have been closer to the cross, but marshall looked really bad tracking the scorer.

9:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It sounds like a home crowd for Honduras tonight. Will the US Soccer never learn not to schedule a match against a Central American outfit in LA?

9:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cunningham looked like a statue there.

9:47 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

this is a pure and blatant moneyspinning match. not a fifa sponsored date, in cali, against a team with an immigrant population? ka-ching. that's all. ka-ching

actually the replay of the penalty incident sort of vindicates the ref's decision. that was really stupid from conrad.

9:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

We could use a goal from this corner just to settle the Honduran crowd noise down a bit.

9:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I don't think it's worth it in the end. There are only a few opportunities for friendlies before June. We need either challenging friendlies against sides that resemble England, Algeria or Slovenia or easy games where we can roll over the opposition and get a warm, fuzzy feeling going among the home crowd. This is neither.

9:50 PM
Blogger West Ham Rising said...

Glad I'm not watching this one.

9:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time. 0-2 Honduras. Well, that was not satisfactory at all.

9:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You should suffering through it with us, Johnno.

9:53 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i think our team needs a goal before the half to instill a bit of belief. but so far, we've created nothing.

beckerman has held up play and destroyed ok, but sasha and robbie have not contributed nearly enough and no support at all to the front two.

marshall can't cope as the center of a back three. he looks desperately uncomfortable at the moment. a man down, we're leaking down the left.

but it also doesn't help that the honduras side kicks us down as soon as we get past the 50. surely one of those guys should get done for persistent fouling. guevara had a very deliberate block that should have been enough for his ticket.

9:55 PM
Blogger West Ham Rising said...

I can watch this! I have to coach Cal's indoor game at 7:45 am tomorrow. I've set the alarm for 6:15. Maggie's game is at a more reasonable 10:45.

9:58 PM
Blogger West Ham Rising said...

Sorry, Lads, should've been "I can't watch this."

9:59 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i don't really care about the result, but i do care about how toothless we look going forward. i didn't clock who we've got to bring on in that department, but this doesn't teach us much at all.

how can we evaluate either Findley or condemn Cunningham when we lose a player so quickly. I've seen that twice now, and if the ref saw that from conrad, I don't think he had much choice. very stupid from an experienced player.

9:59 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

lord, 7.30? I haven't finished throwing up by that time. god love you trev with that kind of alarm clock on a sunday.

10:01 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

To be fair Trev, shouldn't you have said "Can't BEAR to watch this?"

It's dire but it's footie.

10:02 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

conrad should be happy that this isn't being covered by a real commentary team and analysis group. he would be called a tremendous idiot for those two yellows. that should be enough to kill his plans of being on the plane to jo-burg.

10:07 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh that's no good. Next preparation match is against El Salvador. There is nothing more to learn about those butchers. BDB is right. Our warm up has to be against teams that prepare us for England, Slovenia, and Algeria.

Good, back to a central back pairing at the expense of Cunningham who really shouldn't be factoring at this level.

10:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Second half starting up and Goodson has replaced the hapless Cunningham.

10:11 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

get a quick one USA!!!!

10:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You're absolutely right, Gooner. It isn't so much about the result as it is the performance, particularly of those who would presume to be on the plane to SA.

10:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm afraid that I used up all of my mojo on the Leeds boys earlier. Nothing left to summon up for this one.

10:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wallop! Rogers strikes one and it rockets off the post.

10:14 PM
Anonymous Jeff Cunningham said...

No fair. My mum was watching this

10:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That was cynical from Guevara and he's picked up a yellow.

Klejstan lining it up.

10:15 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Unbearably bad from Sasha. Useless.

10:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sorry, Jeff. As Christopher Sullivan politely said, "it wasn't your night."

10:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

In the immortal words of Jerry Harrison, "high, wide and 'orrible" from Sasha.

10:16 PM
Anonymous Sasha's Mum said...

I'm burning his Three Eye Blind posters if he can't hit a better free kick than that.

10:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh, balls - 3-0!

10:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What would Kyle Beckerman's mum make of that effort? Crikey!

10:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh that again was really too easy. Got completely carved up there. Now this game starts to have an implication.

Yes, there is a tremendous asterisk on this match, no real US starters, out of shape mostly MLS team, down a player, but the next time we play these guys for real, this is on record.

10:19 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Is there any chance that someone could convince Kyle that the dreads are sapping his strength? Really weak effort there.

10:20 PM
Anonymous Kyle's Mum said...

10:20 PM

I've told him to get it cut but he's too big to spank now.

10:21 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Sullivan is completely creepy. He's watching this. It's horrible. And Sasha is as big a disappointment as there is on this field.

10:24 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

wholesale changes now.

Bedoya? Who are ya, who are ya?

Davis, Pierce(who should have been on from the start) and I forget who the 4th is. Casey, that's who.

10:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Casey is a bit closer to getting on the plane for my money, but I'm still not sure. Let's say we have five slots for attackers. You'd have to say Jozy, Charlie Davies (if fit), Ching, maybe Findlay and one other.

10:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell - that was nearly a fourth goal.

10:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Wynne should have got a card there. Nowhere near getting the ball.

10:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The problem with Sullivan is that you have a sneaking suspicion is that his true loyalties are south of the border. It's one thing when a commentator has grudging respect for, say Spain, Brazil or Argentina. But Honduras. I don't think so.

10:30 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Have you read that Davies might be available? Everything I've read is that he's not expected to try to kick a ball before July. He's out.

10:31 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've read back by April but maybe that's wildly optimistic. In any case, would he be match fit? Somewhat doubtful. If Davies is definitely out, then probably Conor Casey is in. He's definitely more useful than most of the MLS strikers.

10:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Well, okay. Goodson gets one back with a punishing header that has hopefully left the keeper with a bloody nose.

3-1

10:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Hollar! You're so right. He's in the tank for Mexicans and Central Americans and I'm not sure why. I have absolutely zero memory of his career at all. I know it must have been a while ago, but I want to see film.

GOAL. Goodson sneaks in at the back post and predictably, a Honduran is feigning injury as a result. This could shortly become unwatchable if we're in for 20 minutes of them rolling about like sissies.

10:35 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The crowd noise gets noticeably quieter in the stadium. Are there any Sammers there at all? Hard to hear them if they are and we haven't seen any pictures of them.

10:35 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm pretty sure that's inaccurate. He only left the hospital here in December.

10:37 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

anyone think our team has two goals left in them?

10:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've just had a look at Sully's Wikipedia page. It indicates that he's a year younger than I am. He played in France for Joue-Les-Tours, whoever the hell they are, the Orlando Lions of the ASL, Hungarian second division side Raba ETO, Landskrona BoIS in Sweden, Brondby and Hertha before playing one year with the Clash in 97 and getting crocked. Not exactly a distinguished career then.

10:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well, you have seen Central American sides collapse before, so maybe....

10:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd like to see hang a few balls up for Casey to go crashing into their keeper. He seems a bit rattled now.

10:41 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Dax McCarty? Who are ya? Who are ya?

Oh, I know, he was that 70's era private eye after Mannix, but before Jim Rockford.

10:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Sully was Mick Jones's replacement? Stunning knowledge there BDB.

10:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

According to this December interview, Charlie says that he's expected back at the end of March and will be included in the plans for SA.

http://search.espn.go.com/charlie-davies/audio/7

10:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's the connection, then. Sully must be part of the Hollywood FC mob with LaPags and Jonesy.

10:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You'd have to hope that Bob Bradley has the clipboard out and is crossing off the following names:

Chad Marshall
Marvel Wynne
Robbie Rogers
Jeff Cunningham

10:47 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Damn. That's very, very good news based on this performance. I am delighted to be wrong about Charlie.

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

10:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - we'll need him. As usual, our starting XI can give most sides a game. But if we lose a few key ones, the replacements are not so clever.

10:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Marshall should get another chance with a partner at the back. I'm completely ok with the rest of your discards.

10:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd like to see another one fly. 3-2 and I'd be reasonably happy given the red card and penalty decision, which really changed the match.

10:50 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Wow, you want to talk statues? Conor Casey is completely static.

10:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The ones I'd give another look to:

Perkins
Beckerman
Findlay

10:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice free kick oppo here. I'd love to see this one fly in.

10:52 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh man, any quality at all and that would have been four! Perkins did well not to be sold to ground.

Findley wins a free in a good spot. And Sasha's in the bath... could it be?

10:53 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Pace, but not enough guile to get past their keeper. Nothing from the corner.

10:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The others who started, I assume are on the plane to SA - Bornstein, Conrad, Klejstan, Feilhaber

10:55 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Why hasn't Boaz Myhill had a call up? That one baffles me. I really rate him.

10:56 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yes probably right. Bornstein the only likely starter from that list.

Depending on when and how strong Onyewu comes back, Conrad could be in trouble because of his lack of composure and brains tonight.

10:58 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I don't rate the Dutch at all this time. They've got no cutting edge up front at all. They're organized enough to get through the group stage and probably the Round of 16 but they won't go further.

10:59 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Embarrassing miss from Casey there,

10:59 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed - Bornstein's the only starter. Given that, this result isn't that surprising.

10:59 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Close again at the end, but the ref blows this shower to and end.

11:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Full-time: 3-1 Honduras. Disappointing then. It shows that there isn't a lot of quality beyond the top dozen or so players.

11:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice chatting with you, mate. I'm going to sign off and watch The Soup. Will you be around for the Arse in the morning?

11:03 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Without the penalty, a Honduras win at 2-1 was probably fair.

Did we learn anything? I don't think Beckerman had a bad game, but Rogers looks very lightweight. Wynne probably is not a good enough defender and there's no real quality to his play going forward.

Klejstan has yet to convince me that he deserves a seat. He may get there simply by default.

Marshall should have another chance because he is pretty effective up front with set pieces.

Troy didn't have much of a chance with any 3 of their goals, and made the saves he should have made.

I would like to see more of Brad Davis and Robbie Finley before I decide about them. Conor Casey, no, not nearly good enough. I'd take Eddie Johnson before him because he's more likely to catch fire than the simply awful Casey.

That Dax McCarty guy didn't get enough time tonight, but he was pretty decent sitting on top of the defense for the 11 minutes he was on.

Who would replace Bornstein if he didn't go? Because I'd like to know if there's an alternative there. I'm unconvinced.

But for now, I need to give Eric's laptop back to him. Thanks for sticking in there with me.
