Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
95 Comments:
Liverpool appear to be coasting into the 4th Round after two away goals by Mascherano and Babel. Into the second half in Romania and Pool are 1-3 on aggregate.
Fulham also look to be in good shape against Shakhtar. They're 0-1 up now through a Hangeland goal in the first half. 1-3 Fulham on aggregate.
The third English club involved today - Everton - start their match away to Sporting at 3:05 EST.
In the other ties currently going on, Anderlecht are 4-1 up on Bilbao.
Gala are locked 1-1 on agg with Athletico.
Marseille are 4-1 up on Copenhagen.
PSV and Hamburg are locked at 2-2.
Panathinkaikos are 3-6 up at Roma.
Hoping I can sneak some sound in at work if I can find a link to the Everton match.
My jersey arrived on Monday. Only took a week :)
Stevie G!!!!!!!!
The skipper has added a third goal that surely puts Liverpool into the 4th Round draw for the Europa.
1-4 on aggregate now.
Afternoon, Someone. Looks as if there's going to be a link on Channels 3, 4 and 5 for the Everton match starting at about 3 EST or whenever the Pool and Fulham matches go off.
About half an hour left in those earlier kick-offs.
Anderlecht are now 5-1 up on agg!
Oh dear - Shakhtar have pegged Fulham back to 1-1 on the night and 2-3on aggregate. One more Shahktar goal and this one's going to extra time.
It's going to be a very nervy last fifteen minutes in the Ukraine.
Roma have got another goal back but it's still 4-6 Pana on agg.
PSV and Hamburg still at 2-2 on agg, but Hamburg would go through on away goals in about 15 minutes.
Inside the last five minutes and Fulham are mighty close to a terrific win in their tie with Shakhtar.
Marseille are now 6-1 up on agg!
As it stands, these are the sides heading into the 4th Round draw:
Anderlecht
Marseille
Hamburg
Panathinaikos
Fulham
Liverpool
That is, one Dutch, one German, one French, one Turkish and two English clubs. Why exactly are the Spanish and Italian leagues considered in the top echelon?
Into four extra minutes of stoppage time at Shakhtar. Fulham are nearly there.
Full-time in Romania - Liverpool are safely through. Their Merseyside cousins start up in about ten minutes.
Davey's boy Diego Forlan has scored a late winner for Athletico Madrid, so that's at least one Spanish side into the 4th round. Gala look dead and buried now and good riddance to them really.
I'm assuming that UWS is buried up to his neck in snow this afternoon and unable to struggle to the den to follow the matches. Best of luck digging out, mate!
Fulham have won 2-3 on aggregate!
I'm looking for a working link for the Everton match now. Channel 4 is on darts, Channel 5 is frozen....
I see a test pattern.
Here we go - Atdhe.net has a great link up for the Sporting v. Everton.
Come on, you Toffees!
Everton, as you'll remember, are 2-1 up from the home leg.
Great save, Timmy!
Bugger - I've lost the Atdhe link now.
I'm back - this one looks good for now at least:
http://www.anaimgr.tv/
Hey guys, I am around for a while in and out
No, we have rain!! A little bit West and it is snow.
We are going to miss out on the white stuff.
Costa easily through
Fulham beat the reigning Champs (of the UEFA Cup)
Come on Everton!
15 minutes in now and still 0-0 in Portugal.
Thanks. Found a link, but no sound, which does not help me at work.
No score yet!
I've just noticed that Danny Murphy got a straight red for kicking out at a player right at the death of that Shakhtar v. Fulham match.
Oh - Joao Moutinho hits a free kick off the bar. Panic in the Everton defense there.
Try this link, Someone:
http://www.anaimgr.tv/
It's got English commentary and is running reasonably smoothly.
Welcome, Dave!
Good for you missing out on the white stuff. We're supposed to get about foot tonight. I may just curl up with a good book and a cuppa tomorrow morning, as I don't have to teach or any meetings.
Uh oh - the link has frozen. Bad day on-line this afternoon.
I'm following the text on the bbc site and am thankful for whatever you guys can send out. Live feeds are not working out today.
Werder Bremen have jumped out to a 2-0 lead tonight. They're now 2-1 up on FC Twente. Is McLaren still there?
Wolfsburg have also taken an early 2-0 lead against Villareal. Not a good night for the Spanish so far, with only Athletico eking out a late win.
4-2 Wolfsburg on aggregate.
Channel 3 on VSS is working again:
http://livevss.net/channel3.php
The audio is a bit fuzzy but in English.
The Everton defense anchored by Arsenal loanee Senderos are really under the cosh. Sporting are looking up for it.
Half an hour in and still 0-0. Everton could really use an away goal just to put this tie out of contention.
It's a shame Jagielka is not up to full speed yet. I'd put Coleman in for Senderos, even if he can't play the middle. Senderos is not very useful.
Baines wins a free kick that Landy tries to get on the end of. Corner.
Agreed. Philippe is definitely a make-shift option. You really need Jags back. It's amazing that you've done as well as you have this season with all the bother with Lescott and then the injuries.
Where's Dave buggered off to? Dog walkies in the rain!?
Dear oh dear - that link is down now.
The season started horribly and Atreta's still not 100%. At least Bily and Donovan have been solid additions.
Bremen are now 3-1 up in what seems like a cracking match in Germany tonight.
3-2 on aggregate.
Fenerbahce have gone 1-0 up. 2-2 on aggregate with Lille. The winner meets Pool in the next round.
I am back
Had to pick up Thomas from the high school
Still goalless?
Saha is penalised for offside. He doesn't look very happy with the service he's getting. Could be a frustrating night for the Toffees' top scorer.
Still goalless, Dave. Coming up on half time in about five minutes time.
Wolfsburg now 3-1 up against Villareal. 5-3 on aggregate there.
Valencia have leveled their aggregate score with Brugge. 1-0 on the night. 1-1 on agg.
Wayne Bridge has opted out of the England squad!
Even Dan Patrick has a poll question on this subject
I'm not watching the Bremen-Twente match through a ESPN stream on VSS. Four goals in that one.
I have tried to get a link but no luck
I have Five Live on.... and it isn't blacked out.... that you used to be heaven and now it is a poor substitute for pictures but I I'm happy
Doesn't fancy playing next to JT? I don't blame him.
Into stoppage time in Portugal first half nearly over.
Half time in Lisbon
Half way there Someone
It can end now :)
I'll be in the car headed home when this one comes to the end.
Stevie G is saying that the Europa League is Liverpool's last chance for silverware. So he's given up on the championship then.
Yeah - I'm off to a late meeting at 4:30 so I'll miss part of the second half.
I am off than too
Take care everyone
UWS
Football 365 comment: "Pretty dour opening 45 to be fair, aside from Sporting hitting the bar. The game needs a goal, as do both sides. Everton go through if this stays the same."
Cheers, Dave! See you bright and early Saturday morning for the local derby - Leeds at 'Uddersfield!
As things stand, these sides will join the earlier winners:
Standard Liege
Juventus
Rubin Kazan
Fenerbahce
Bremen
Wolfsburg
Teams back out in Portugal for the second half. Come on, you Toffees!
So that is, one Dutch, one Belgian, one Russian, one Italian, one French, one Turkish, two Spanish but three German and three English clubs.
I'll say it again - why exactly are the Spanish and Italian leagues considered in the top echelon?
you haven't buggered off yet?
I have to grade some quizzes before my class tonight
Everton free-kick after Donovan is nudged over Grimi.
Let Landycakes take a pop!
Not yet - 4:30 meeting up the hallway.
Five Live had an interesting talk at half time
A couple of callers both agreed that Terry should bugger off from the squad
Senderos looks to be in trouble now. He'll have to come off. Goodness knows who they've got to throw on.
I don't the rule of 'qualifying' to play for a country
The Five Live commentator comments about it too. I didn't know that Deco was actually Brazilian
Jags coming on for Senderos
Coleman or Duffy maybe? I doubt Jagielka can go 45.
Coleman or Duffy maybe? I doubt Jagielka can go 45.
Alright. Bringing Jags in under fire.
Everton have fallen behind on the night and in the tie
Bugger for that last minute penalty last week
The Toffees HAVE to score
20 minutes plus added time for Everton to get something from this match
Saha has a shot well saved
Bugger
Bugger... Sporting have doubled their league
Ex Prem start Pedro Mendes with the goal
They still need a one goal for it to go to extra time
Interesting article on Pompey... it has explained a few things for me
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/mattslater/2010/02/portsmouth_fc_in_crisis_qa.html
Oh dear - Sporting have jumped out to a 2-0 lead while I was in my meeting.
3-2 Sporting on aggregate now with less than ten minutes to play.
I go away and come home to this...
Everton have a very late corner
Comes to nothing
I feel for you, Someone. That often happens to me. Step away for five minutes to speak with a student and the goals start flying in at the wrong end.
That is it
Sporting have scored a last second fast break goal
They kicked off again
Sadly Everton are out
Here is the last sixteen
Anderlect
Lille
Athletico Madrid
Rubin Kazan
Juventus
Marseille
Hamburg
Panathinaikos
Fulham
Sporting Lisbon
Standard Liege
Costa Del Pool
Werder Bremen
Wolfsburg
Valencia/Brugge( still playing tied 1-1 on agg)
Ach - Sporting have scored again. 3-0 on the night - that's torn it. Sorry, Someone.
That was an ugly last three minutes.
Time to get ready for Spurs.
Take care
I am off to my class
Here's the final tally nation-wise:
England - 2
Belgium - 2
France - 2
Germany - 3
Greece - 1
Italy - 1
Netherlands - 0
Portugal - 1
Russia - 1
Spain - 2
Turkey - 0
And the 16th will either be Spanish or Belgian. Good showing from the Germans and Belgians; poor show for Serie A, though.
I'm off home too. See you all bright and early for Huddersfield v. Leeds on Saturday morning. Ta ra!
