Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

News out of OT is that Rooney and Berbatov to start. Hernandez is on the bench
I am listening to Five Live and John Motson asked a trivia question.
Drogs scored a hat-trick on opening day. Who was the last player to score on the opening day of the prem league?
Manchester United v Newcastle line-ups:
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Vidic, Jonathan Evans, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani, Berbatov, Rooney.
Subs: Kuszczak, Rafael Da Silva, Smalling, Carrick, Giggs, Macheda, Hernandez.
Newcastle: Harper, Perch, Coloccini, Williamson, Jose Enrique, Routledge, Smith, Nolan, Barton, Gutierrez, Carroll.
Subs: Krul, Ryan Taylor, Xisco, Ameobi, Vuckic, Ranger, Tavernier.
Referee: Chris Foy (Merseyside)
Michael Owen doesn't even make the bench
I think I know the answer to the trivia question. I'll see if Dr. Dahlgren knows
Afternoon, Dave! I'm looking forward to this one. It's appropriate that you've got a big image of the Roon on the thread - he's the big question for me. Get the boy play himself out of his current slump - I hope so!
I'm thinking your trivia question over. Okay - I'll go Alan Shearer for Blackburn.
Okay, that is your guess.
They still haven't said the answer on Five Live
My guess is Fabrizio Ravanelli for Boro against Liverpool
I hope Rooney forgets the summer and starts off on a sprint!
Have you found a good link yet? It's not on FSC, is it?
I strikes me that this is the same Newcastle line-up that got relegated two seasons ago. Have they bought anyone?
Not looking for a link. I am watching it on ESPN2
I did hear that the Toon is pretty close to the team that went down
Cheers! I didn't realize that it was on the telly.
Giggs has won 31 medals... if he wins one more then he will be the most decorated player in any league anywhere!
I love the list of English League Champions
#1 Manchester United 19
#1 Liverpool 19
#3 Arsenal 13
#4 Ryan Giggs 11
#5 Everton 9
They are going over wrong answers... mine was wrong!
What about mine?
Andy Carroll is wearing the #9 shirt this season. It was unused last season because they didn't want the pressure on anybody
Shearer was not mentioned as one of the wrong guesses
So are you looking for a 7-0 result to put United on top of the heap?
That either means it's right or ridiculously wrong.
United I guess are ahead of Liverpool. They have both won 19 but United have been runners up 14 times to Liverpool's 12
I think that Wayne needs a nice, close shave before the match. The scruffy look isn't working for him.
Why are these idiots on ESPN2 talking about NLF football? The season hasn't even started yet!
Smiffy!!!!!
Shave it all off!
Get Lexi off
Bretos, Lalas and Mustoe in the studio - hello, chaps!
I reckon that he could grow his hair out a bit but shave the scruff.
1954: Infostrada Sports add: Newcastle United are Wayne Rooney's favourite opponents in Premier League matches, together with Portsmouth. He has scored 10 goals against each of them, more than against any other team.
Vidic is your skipper now? Does he even speak English?
It was Dion Dublin for Coventry in 1997!!!!
I would have never guessed that one. I thought Ravenelli was a good shout.
I agree with you about Rooney. Don't like the skin head!
ESPN on commercial while the teams are coming out!
Vidic is behind Rio and Giggs
Fergie reckons Owen isn't 90 minute fit
GET TO OLD TRAFFORD ESPN!!!
Team members being cheered on 5Live... finally ESPN show pictures
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
United have been held at home in the last 2 seasons
Drew with Reading and Newcastle!
5 Live hasn't clicked off
Glad United are wearing their normal home uniforms
Red shirts, white shorts, black socks
They have been wearing white socks in pre-season
Best of luck to your United today!
cheers
Not started as fast as I thought
United have immediately jumped to thirteenth just by kicking off, just behind Citeh.
So the player who played right back for Argentina under Maradona in the summer is playing in the center forward channel today. Interesting.
Nolan gets an early introduction to Vidic's hard head. He's off for treatment.
Nolan is back on with what looks like a glob of shaving cream on the back of his head.
We haven't created anything yet. I am not happy!
ooh, O'Shea should have done better there!
First chance falls to O'Shea but he's not really the one you want on the end of those. He almost seemed surprised that it came to him.
Come on Roon... you should have done better there!
Berba wasn't pleased there
Rooney drifting wide, laying off to my boy Nani and then whipping one high into the crowd.
We were three up against Fulham by now a few seasons back
This season I'm definitely going to count the number of times that United doesn't get the chance to attack the Stretford End in the second half. So far it's 0/1.
Struth... Carroll missed a sitter... Should have scored!
You'll enjoy this one, Dave.
I was at a conference this morning. This presenter was struggling to get his PowerPoint going and he said to the crowd, "Sorry, I'll get it up in a minute."
I instinctively looked over at a friend near me and the glint in his eye reinforced that he was thinking the same thing -
"THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!"
No they are attacking the SC in the second half so it 1/1
Great stuff from Nani there but the area was too congested to take advantage of it. Newcastle definitely putting plenty of bodies behind the ball.
I was just delivered the new shirt by my buddy!!
Stretford End is to the left on the telly, isn't it?
Fantastic - put it on, mate!
Valencia nearly played Roon in there. He's desperate for a goal, you can tell.
Smiffy is playing very deep for the Magpies. I never liked him in that role. Fergie started that. He was a great striker for us.
Carroll has a pop there. Saved by VDS.
Late tackle by Barton - surprise, surprise.
Andy Carroll with a nice shot
Yes, the SE is to the left so United will be attacking it in the second half.
Won't put it on until after the match
Joey Barton looks even more villainous with the 'stache.
Useless Tache by Barton
Nice on with the comment Bobby
That's what I meant. I'm only counting the times that they DON'T attack the Stretford End. The times that they do are too numerous to count. I'm just wondering if they ever attack the other end in the other half. And if not, why not.
By the way, a lot of callers on 606 on Saturday were complaining about the FA policy of allowing Chelski and United to start with home matches every season. Any comment?
Big decision here for the ref. Red or yellow?
Never a red... there was cover
So that's Barton and now Perch into the book. Any wagers on Newcastle finishing with 11?
Roon....straight into the wall. Let my boy Nani take those, you Scouse wally!
Bugger.. Roon into the wall.
I am not a happy camper right now
Give them time. Patience, mate.
All United possession now, Newcastle parking the proverbial bus.
That was an interesting ball from Colocinni.
ooh, United almost in there with some mistakes
Rooney isn't happy with something
Oh - Evra might have made more of that opportunity to cross.
I think Roon was unhappy with that Scholes pass cum shot.
It will come. United will score at least once in this half. I don't think the Newcastle back four are good enough to defend for ninety minutes.
Dangerous ball in from Nani but Harper tipped it away from Drac. Corner.
United are not creating much
Roon took it off Berba's foot there
Even Carroll is back for the corner. Newcastle with no one up front at this point. VDS is merely a spectator.
Bloody Hell Rooney!!
HIT THE TARGET!!
Roon with a big chance there but he whiffs it left-footed well over. He's just not clicking right now but one goal might change that.
WHAT IS UP WITH ROONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Berbatov!!
Great finish!!
GOAL! Told you so! Dracula scores with a nice low drive into the corner after a good move.
1-0 United!
Definitely on side!
Great ball from Scolesy there. Now - do Newcastle have a Plan B? I doubt it. They obviously came for a 0-0er but now what do they do. That could open the floodgates.
And almost immediately, the match has opened up. Plenty of goals to come, I would guess.
United immediately up to 6th place now.
That's odd - it almost sounded as if the crowd was chanting "USA, USA, USA" there for a moment. I wonder why?
Valencia hasn't done much!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fletcher!!
Roon blew it again
Were going top... what top? The very top!!
GOAL! Fletcher adds the second there. Great work from my boy Nani dinking it through to Evra who's drive found Fletch in front of goal.
2-0!
I wanted that second before half
Berb almost puts Roon in again
Roon nearly in there.
I dunno. With no reason to worry, I'd just leave Roon on until he scores. That's the point that Martyn is making now. I agree.
Thomas just noticed a Berbatov smile
That's it for half
Happy with the score and the last ten minutes... the first 35.. not so much
Half-time: United cruising at 2-0. I would predict 4 or 5-0 in the end. I might run Chicarito out for at least 15 minutes, hopefully after Roon gets his goal.
United up to fourth now. In the CL qualifying slots.
Tyler said that Roon was only going to play 45
Arsenal Blackpool on ESPN 2 at 10 next week
Teams back out at OT. I think Chris Hughton got a little greyer in that first half. He knows that he's got a long season ahead of him.
Nice one! Leeds v. Millwall at 7:30 followed by the Arsenal.
Newcastle are one goal away from the drop zone.
I understand Scholesy's position about Capello not calling him but I'm not sure Fabio's English is good enough to be able to convey his ideas by phone. That takes a different level of literacy.
And as I type, Scholesy picks up his requisite yellow card.
Oh - Scholes might have got a penalty there off Coloccini. I'd like to see that one again.
Roon tried to pick off Drac while he might have driven toward goal himself. Shame.
Oh - and now Drac dinks one past the post. Newcastle are here for the thumping for sure. United really should try to build the goal difference.
Sorry, I got kicked off the computer!
Berbatov should have scored and the Rooney of old would have scored instead of passing
Fletch in the book
Fletch talks himself into the book. Silly boy. There's no reason for United players to pick up cards in this match.
I agree with you on Rooney. It might be Little Green Pea time in a moment or two.
My annual Guardian Booklet arrived today
Chicharito time!
Wee Pea is about to come on!!
For Rooney?
Rooney comes off. The goal drought continues....
I'd be surprised if Chicharito didn't score in this match. I expect a couple more goals at least.
Oh - Chicharito just a whisker offside there. Tight.
Ameobi on for Nolan. And Old Man Giggsy for Nani.
I was taking the boys to the gym
Roon was replaced?
Giggs on for nani
That's right.
Rooney looking pensive there on the bench.
I need Giggs to open up his account early. He is the only one to score in every Prem season
Again, Valencia hasn't done much tonight
I want a couple more goals
You notice that Martin Tyler is refusing to call Chicharito by his nickname.
Great pass by Giggs but Berba tried to be too cute
A little too cute there from Chicharito.
Oh - Drac did well but Harper saved well from him.
Almost for Berb!!
I really want another couple!
uh oh... Evra looks really hurt and the game was stopped
Looks like he landed on it
YES!!!!!!!!!
GIGGS OPENS HIS ACCOUNT!!!
GREAT PASS BY SCHOLES
Evra is still off
GOAL! Old man Giggsy gets United's third. Great ball from Scholes out to him and he hit it first time.
3-0!
No comment on that third goal, mate?
Xisco brings a rare save from VDS.
Newcastle now level with West Ham in that third drop spot. United need one more goal to pip Villa in third.
Berba took it off the foot of Hernandez
Giggsy wins a free kick off Alan Smith's arm. Scholes tried to take it quickly but the ref whistled it back. Looks like Giggs to take.
useless effort from Giggs
Game over
A satisfactory start for my lot
Wish Roon had scored though!
Thanks for joining me Bob
Best of luck against Millwall!
TTFN
That's it - United will have to settle for a 3-0 opening match win. Decent result but there seemed to be more goals in it. Newcastle look really ordinary. They'll struggle to stay up.
Cheers, mate. I'll be posting the results of the opening weekend's predictions later tonight.
Hello everyone. I wish I could have been on board, but I was at work. I did record the match and watched it later that evening.United won comfortably and put in a professional performance, but were far from their best. IMHO. I am not concerned as they usually start slow and improve as the season progresses.
I did see David Jones' free kick for Wolves vs Stoke. It reminded me of Dennis Tueart's free kick for Man Citeh vs Swansea sometime around 1982. Does anyone remember that goal? Take care everyone and I look forward to chatting this weekend.
