Carling Cup Fourth Round Live!
Undergraduate advisement finished for the day, I'm closing the office door and preparing to enjoy the afternoon's Carling Cup fixtures. It's fourth round day today. There's no LUFC involvement, but perhaps after yesterday's shellacking, that's a good thing. Join me from 2:45 pm onward for the usual banter and perhaps an informal tribute to Paul the Octopus.

The Carling Cup fixtures for this afternoon:
Brum v. Brentford
Ipswich v. Northhants
Leicester v. WBA
United v. Wolves
Wigan v. Swansea
It's always interesting to see how much importance clubs attach to this tournament. Here's Birmingham's starting XI today:
Taylor, Carr, Dann, Ridgewell, Parnaby, Bowyer, Gardner, Michel, Derbyshired, Phillips, O'Connor.
Looks like a full strength Blues side.
As usual, the My Premium TV link is working beautifully. I've got Sky coverage up with Jeff Stelling at OT.

Here are the line-ups for the United v. Wolves big match of the evening:
Man Utd: Amos, Brown, Smalling, Evans, Fabio Da Silva, Obertan, Carrick, Gibson, Park, Macheda, Bebe. Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, Hernandez, Rafael Da Silva, Brady, Eikrem, Morrison.
Wolves: Hennessey, Foley, Mouyokolo, Berra, Elokobi, Hunt, Mancienne, David Jones, Jarvis, Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher. Subs: Hahnemann, Van Damme, Edwards, Stearman, Bent, Milijas, Doyle.
The other four 2:45 pm kickoffs have started.
No goals yet in the first fifteen minutes of action in the Carling Cup.
Wolves get us underway at Old Trafford then. Plenty of seats available in the Theatre of Dreams tonight at first glance.
Mick McCarthy is definitely giving it a go tonight with a fairly strong and attacking line-up. Fergie not surprisingly has made 11 changes from the weekend's line-up. That might chap the fans who've come wearing sombreros tonight. No Chicharito on show. But they've got Bebe.
Matt Jarvis giving Fabio some early things to think about. The resulting corner is well overhit.
Gibson knocks in United's first corner. Collected by the keeper.
Alan Smith has noticed that the crowd is unusually subdued tonight. Only 57K in the ground - in most stadia, that would be a full house but it seems half empty here in this big barn of a ground.
Half chance there for Jones after Stephen Hunt had found him in the area. The ball trickled off his toe.
I'm quite curious to watch this Bebe lad tonight. He would seem to be cut from the same cloth and Antonio Valencia, who's out for an extended injury.
The Baggies have taken the lead in the 21st minute against Leicester at the Walker Stadium.
Two quick goals between Ipswich and Northhants at Portman Road have them locked at 1-1.
Half way through the first half at OT, still no score.
Macheda doesn't look up to the pace of the match so far. I reckon he's best off the bench.
Carrick with a big blast well over the bar. Some whistles from the crowd.
I missed the Paul tribute when a client showed up unexpectedly. Sorry Paul, you deserved better.
Obertan had a chance to run in on goal but he overran the ball. Shame.
Afternoon, Gooner - how are you?
Delaney has fired Ipswich back into the lead.
Get in, you tractor boys!
Doing well mate. To be fair, I don't know what story today is giving me more chuckles, Paul or Platini grumbling about a game console he's got no idea of how works.
I haven't picked up on the Platini story yet - have you got a link for it?
Nearing half time at OT. This has got to be worrying to Sir Alex. If a second team of United stars can't put Wolves to the sword, that's not good. They really haven't had much of a sniff yet.
Best move of the night. Bebe links well with Obertan and then his curler is just too high.
Half-time: Stalemate so far. Keep in mind that the tie has to be sorted tonight, so this doesn't help either side.
Jeff Stelling seems quite non-plussed. You can imagine that he'd rather be home on the settee watching East Enders than this rot.
Read Platini's old-man response to goal line technology here
Next, he'll be "Like"ing videos of cats and updating his FB page with "Ooof, that last vol-au-vent might have been a bit dodgy"
Looks like Bebe opened his account controversially in the second half but Wolves have already leveled to make this 1-1
Two goals at Leicester to make that scoreline 1-2, Baggies lead.
Wigan go ahead of Swansea 1-0.
Please, please don't let that miserable little thug Stephen Hunt score today. He's gone close twice in 4 minutes.
He's small, he's hard, he'll eat your St. Bernard, Sung Ji Park, Sung Ji Park!!!
He'll also warm the cockles in the Red half of Manchester with his strike that puts United ahead of Wolves at the 70 minute mark. This after Smalling clears off his own line from that mutt Hunt.
Good stuff from the Guardian
Re: Federico's off night
"How long until the camera catches Fergie cleaning an Old Yeller-esque shotgun with the words 'Loan to Preston' printed down the side," writes Taylor Rockwell. "He's used similar models in the past to handle Frazier Campbell, Manucho, Zoran Tosic, and (currently) Mame Biram Diouf.
Oh, you can't be serious. Foley's just tied this up again for Wolves. 2-2. Sorry David and David.
Fergie had just switched things at the back around, replacing Fabio with Gary Neville, moving Evans out wide left, and the Orange into the middle of defense. A minute later, none of the above was on watch as Wolves just played the ball through them.
And Steven Fletcher of Wolves could have put another one in as he beat Neville. But he didn't.
Fergie's withdrawn Bebe and brought on Hernandez. It's Man U time now.
Still end to end stuff. Wolves tails are up, but United having the better chances.
Normal order restored for now. Hernandez on the money for United. 3-2 in the 89th.
That's got to be enough. Wolves must be on fumes now because they've devoted everything forward since they equalized 15 minutes ago.
Heya, Gooner. Thanks for keeping the thread going while I was dealing with some needy students.
Looks like the United second string have this one in the bag.
Good stuff from the Guardian on Macheda. He definitely doesn't look the same whiz kid who lit up the Premiership a couple of seasons ago with those supersub goals.
That's it - United have seen off Wolves with that Chicharito goal.
Hernandez's goal to feature as top story on the Fox Soccer news by the sound of it.
Left a midfielder and a defender on their behinds as he ran through on goal with a ice-cold finish.
Early days, but the kid does seem like the biz. The US qualification for 2014 may take a hit or two.
Ravel Morrison on for Park. And he is?
Brum and Brentford are into extra time after a 1-1 draw.
Ipswich are cruising into the fifth round having seen off Northhants 3-1.
West Brom also cruising it against Championship no-hopers Leicester 1-4.
Wigan have wrapped up a 2-0 win over Swansea.
Yeah - Chicharito is definitely living up to the advance hype.
I think it's still going because the ref had to be replaced with a grain stroin.
How about Ipswich v. United for the 5th round at Portman Road? I'd love to have a battered sausage in my belly on the way to that one!
There it is. United 3-2 winners. Congrats David and David.
David and David. I like that. Sounds like a 70s double-act. The Two Davids. Davids - Little and Large.
I'm off home now. I'll check in with you lot tomorrow for the other half of the Carling Cup draw.
David Baerwald broke through as one of the David's on the critically acclaimed record "Welcome to the Boomtown." Terrific record but a little dated because of the production.
Ta-rah mate.
