Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Good evening everyone. I love the illustrations, Bob. You were correct on Saturday. I was in attendance for England vs Switzerland. I believe it was 1 1982 World Cup Qualifier.
Evening, MUR. I have to give a tip of the hat to the Gooner for providing the inspiration for the graphics tonight. Glad you liked them.
The FSC coverage with Waldo, Chris Sullivan and Cobi in the studio has started. Ford Field in Detroit looks to be fairly empty tonight. Foxboro of course was a sell-out even for a meaningless friendly against Spain.
The team news is in:
USA: Howard, Boca, Goodson, Cherundolo, Ream, Dempsey, Jones, Bradley, Donovan, Altidore, Agudelo
Canada: Hirschfeld, McKenna, De Jong, Hainault, Johnson, De Rosario, Hutchinson, Ledgerwood, Simpson, Dunfield, Jackson
I am back BD. How have you been?
I did attend England vs Switzerland for the 1982 World Cup Qualifier at Wembley. I think I saw you and Dave at the match.
I'm doing really well. It's my last night in D.C. I'll be driving back to Blue Devil HQ tomorrow.
I do think I was at that match but a lot of the England matches I went to with the Host Nation's Club have become a bit of a blur.
How's your week been, mate?
Panama are fading a bit at the end of their match. They were 3-0 up after an hour and have shipped two goals to Guadeloupe. That's good news for the US team - Panama was surely their most dangerous opponent in the group.
I have been busy this week. Summer vacation has started, but I am working with the freshman orientation program the next two weeks to make extra money ( $1000 per week).
I hope you have had a great time in DC. I have fond memories of the trips with the Host Nation Club, especially the time I was lost and ran into Phil Thompson.
JP Delacamera and Kyle Martino will be the announcers.
Panama have held on to defeat Guadalupe 3-2. I did not see any major surprises in Euro qualifying today. The Faroes did defeat Estonia 2-0.
Glad to hear that you're keeping busy over the summer. I'm doing the same with a little summer teaching and some research.
Enjoy your research. Will you be returning to Fred Town tomorrow?
Yep - I'll be back in the evening. I've got class on Thursday and a presentation on Friday afternoon.
I may have to step out for a few minutes late in the first half to pickup Melanie from softball practice. I should be available the entire second half.
We're about to get started then....
I think Canada's main treat will be Norwich City's Simeon Jackson. The key for the US will be whether or not Aguelo and Altidore can get sufficient service to threaten the Canadian defense.
The match kicks off from Ford Stadium.
Josh Simpson made a great run down the left past Cherunduloh, but his cross was overcooked.
Altidore and Agudelo didn't get a sniff against Spain and Ream was completely overwhelmed. Let's hope tonight goes differently.
Dangerous free kick early on for the US after Jozy was wrestled to the ground.
Hainault was called or a push on Jozy just outside the box. It seemed soft.,IMHO.
The free kick from Dempsey is deflected for a corner.
Dempsey's effort is deflected over the bar. Bit of a Ronaldo effort with the laces there.
The Canadians clear after blocking to shots from the corner.
All US pressure so far. Corner in from Donovan and scrambled away before it's collected by Hirschfeld.
Hirschfeld collects the cross from Landy after the Canadians struggled to clear the corner.
The Canadians have struggled with basic defending from set pieces.
The US have dominated from the opening kickoff.
Jozy wins another corner for the US.
Agudelo wins another corner. It looks like Simeon Jackson is going to be living on scraps tonight.
The corner from Landy is headed out for a throw that the Canadians have trouble defending.
I agree, BD. That is a shame as he seems to be a really talented player.
I'll look forward to seeing him in the Premiership next season.
Landy wins a corner for the US.
Bradley had his shot deflected wide off of Bocanegra from the corner.
The US is dominating the midfield, explaining why they have been so dominant.
Canada are really parking the proverbial bus; US are finding it hard to get through the thickets of players.
GOAL! I spoke to soon. Jozy with the opener.
Jozy ran onto the ball through there from Bradley, turned the defender well and beat the keeper. In honesty, Hirschfeld's effort was poor.
1-0!
GOAL!!! 1-0 US AS JOZY SCORES WITH A SOFT SHOT UNDER HIRSCHFELD AS HE WAS ASSISTED BY LANDY. THE MOVE STARTED WITH A FAILED CANADIAN ATTACK.
It should have been a routine save for Hirschfeld.
You're absolutely right - it was Landycakes with the ball through for Jozy.
That goal might open the match up a bit.
To be honest it was a question of when , not if in terms of the US scoring.
I need to pick up Melanie from softball practice, but will be back in a few minutes.
CHEERS!
True. They should be able to run up a decent score now.
Talk to you later, mate!
Weak keeping on the goal . . .
I'm enjoying book club . . . will comment soon . . . swamped at work. . . :(
Jozy did well to latch onto the ball through there and turned and crossed but the keeper held well.
Evening, Johnno. Glad you're enjoying the Sirota. I'll look forward to your comments.
Cherlundo should've taken a touch to goal . .
I agree. They really should be two or three up at this point.
How was graduation?
Now they're starting to let Canada back in. De Rosario with a close effort there.
Uh oh . . . out of laptop battery . . . be back in a few . . .
Graduation was a lot of fun. Lots of happy parents. The best moment was during the traditional Elgar processional of "Pomp and Circumstance," the Gooner murmured next to me: "We hate Nottingham Forest, we hate Liverpool too, we hate Man United...." Classic!
Simeon Jackson with his first flash of pace past the moribund Cherundolo.
Agudelo tried to appeal for a pen there but it was in vain.
Agudelo with a speculative effort that was deflected toward goal. Hirschfeld nearly bobbled it in again. Not a good night for the Canadian keeper.
It' s all USA . . . but we need another.
Nice one, Stevie, nice one, son.
How long u in town for? I'm going to DC united on Saturday with the kids.
Hello WHR. Great to hear from you. I see that it is still 1-0.
I am back Bob. I thought there would be a second goal.
The first half is winding down with the US going in 1-0 at the half. I'm a bit disappointed. The balance isn't right. I don't see the point of playing a defensive mid like Jermaine Jones against a side with the lack of ambition of Canada. I'd have him off and another more attacking mid on in the second half.
The US has a 1-0 halftime lead.
I agree Bob. Jermaine Jones should be replaced by an attacking midfielder.
Welcome back, MUR.
I'm leaving again tomorrow. This one was just a hit and run as I'm into my summer teaching now. I might be back in late July for the Teacher's March on Washington.
Hi ya, MUR . . . Hope all is well with you and yours . . . Bob, is the Championship schedule out yet? . . . Me and you and James need to go to Upton Park! . . . Hey, like the fight in Guadalupe!
Hope all is well with you and your family , WHR. Are you happy with the appointment of Fat Sam as the Hammers' manager?
The Championship schedule comes out at the end of the month. I agree - I'd especially love to get to Upton Park in its swansong season.
Upton Park has a unique atmosphere. It will be sad to see the Hammers move from this famous stadium.
It would be great if both BD and WHR could watch West Ham vs Leeds from Upton Park.
The second half kicks off from Ford Field.
We're underway in the second half now.
I thought Johnson was fouled just outside the box. The Us were lucky that time.
Canada definitely on the front foot from the start of the half.
I agree . The Canadians have been more positive in the early stages of the second half.
Will Johnson is booked for a foul from behind on Jermaine Jones.
Goodson heads straight to Hirschfeld off the free kick.
"Bradley sends it FORWARD TO GOODSON IN THE AIR!" . . . . For a not even a half chance. . . . pathetic commentary. . . .
Bradley crossed for Agueldo and the Canadian defender headed out for a corner.
Bradley headed wide from the resulting corner.
Simeon Jackson with a nice move there but eventually stopped.
That was better from Canada as Simeon Jackson showed some skill, but was crowded out.
Agueldo shot well over.
Dunfield is down holding his shin. Will he be replaced? He took quite a tumble.
Time for a change for the U.S. methinks.
Dempsey volleyed wide as Hirschfeld fumbled a cross. It looks like a corner.
The U.S. maintain possession from the corner.
Will Johnson shoots wide.
I agree Bob. The U.S. could use a spark from somewhere.
i like Clint
Yes! Just when things were getting stale, Dempsey steps up with a second goal.
GOAL!!! 2-0 u.s. AS hIRSCHFELD SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER WITH THAT NEAR POST SHOT.ANOTHER GREAT CROSS FROM LANDY.
Clint rooolz. Great finish at the back post.
Wondolowski is coming on for Agudelo. I'm not sure about the kid. He's MLS quality but I'm not sure about whether he can step up.
Chris Wondowloski is on for Agueldo.
I thought he had a decent match, but I don't see him as an EPL player. He may be a decent player in the Championship.
I have noticed that Dwayne De Rosario has had a quiet match. To be honest,he has not had great service.
Great save, Timmy!
Gerba shot over with a decent effort. It was tipped over by Timmy.
Goodson headed out for a Canadian corner.
A bit of a dive from Jozy there.
Not sure about bringing Sasha on at this point.
I have never been impressed by Sasha. He does not appear to be able to hack it at international level.
Sasha is on for Jozy.
Jozy is off and so am I . . . nice chatting with you both . . . I've got to shuttle a child or two to bed . . .hoping to get up at 6 am for a 630 pick up soccer game . . .not sure I'll make it!
Cheers WHR. It was great chatting with you.
Cheerio, WHR - great to have you around tonight.
Gerba is offside as he thought he was through with a chance on goal.
Great defending by Cherunduloh on Simeon Jackson.
That seemed to be a chance for Landy, but he failed to make a decent connection.
Maurice Edu is on for Jermaine Jones.
Mo Edu coming on here finally for Jermaine Jones.
Maurice Edu wins a corner for the U.S.
Robert Friend is on for Dwayne DeRosario.
The corner from Landy sails over everyone, but Bradley forces a save from Hirschfeld.
Josh Simpson wins a corner with a great run.
Wow - great double save from Timmy!
WOW!!! A superb triple save from Timmy!
The U.S. clear the resulting corner.
Timmy does well to collect a cross under pressure. Are you watching Lars?
Timmy is keeping the clean sheet all by himself.
Great run by Landy, but a poor cross.
There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
Landy should have done better there.
Hainault heads wide from the corner.
I don't think that was a penalty. I think Clint was looking for that one.
The ref blows the final whistle and the U.S. defeat Canada 2-0.
Full-time: 2-0 US.
Gooner is pleased but I would have been happier with a 5 or 6-0 win.
I'm off then, mate. Nice chatting with you.
I think the U.S. were looking for three points. I think they will do just enough to win the group and play better once they get to the knockout stages. I think Bob Bradley wants the U.S. to peak later in the tournament.
Cheers BD. It was great chatting with you.
Gooner is satisfied, but anything but pleased. The Canucks didn't offer anything that would beat us. Our 2-goal cushion was more than adequate even when they were on top of our midfield thanks to substitutions.
Coach B is banking on the first XI scoring enough goals and for Tim to keep not allowing goals to go in. I don't think Aguadelo or Altidore can score the 2-3 a game that's going to be needed, Altidore won't be able to feature in every game. Jozy got a stupid yellow yesterday and I bet he'll pick up another before the second round. The forwards off the bench don't look capable of scoring enough either.
Realistically, I think Hernandez and co are thinking up novel ways to drop the Gold Cup off the top of the bus during their ride of triumph through the streets of Mexico City, and who would blame them?
Very funny last paragraph... made me chuckle
