Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Here's the team news out of Argentina tonight:
Peru: Fernandez, Vilchez, Acasiete, Rodriguez, Risco, Cruzado, Carmona, Balbin, Yotun, Guerrero, Castrillon.
Uruguay: Muslera, Lugano, V. Pereira, Cacares, Coates, A. Pereira, Gargano, Gonzalez, Arevalo, Forlan, Suarez.
This could well be a bit of a kick-fest tonight as both sides favor some fairly rugged defending.
And true to form, Yutun has already picked up the first yellow card inside the first ten minutes.
Fifteen minutes in and still goal-less. Maxi Pereira had a chance to get a ball across but he couldn't find Forlan in the box.
Great save their by the Peruvian keeper Fernandez at the feet of Forlan. One way traffic so far.
First corner for Peru - a bit of a breather for them now.
Uh oh - the commentator has already raised the spectre of the "P" word. Schtum, lad. Schtum!
Suarez picked up a yellow there in that scrum. One for each side now.
Oh - that was a dangerous ball over from Vargas but no one could get a touch on it.
Forlan still inexplicably taking all the set pieces for Uruguay.
Walter Gargano becomes the second Uruguay player to go into the ref's book.
The bloody air horns are getting on my tits already. Nearly as bad as the vuvuzelas.
Another great run by Maxi Pereira and he found Suarez at the near post. Super block otherwise he would've scored.
To echo UWS' plaintive cry from the South Africa World Cup, "where's the quality?"
GOAL! Alvaro Pereira has bundled it over the line!
Has it been allowed? No - I think Lugano was ruled offside in the move.
The keeper Fernandez seems to have twisted an ankle in that clash.
Good evening BD. I am here to join you for this Copa Semi.
Evening, MUR! Great to have you on board. I hope you'll bring us some goals with you. Still 0-0 here coming up on half-time.
The first half ends and in typical tournament fashion, it is 0-0 between Peru and Uruguay.
The ref blows for half-time a bit early there. As the commentator mentions, "like many of us, he's seen enough."
I wonder if the first half was entertaining.
Not really - fairly defensive stuff.
Wow - Rachel Maddow is interviewing members of the US Women's team next.
Meanwhile it's Ricky and Ossie again doing the ITV half-time show.
It will be a busy evening tomorrow as Venezuela takes on Paraguay in the other semi and Chivas takes on Real Madrid in the late match.
I guess that interview is on MSNBC.
Yes, indeed. I've got that on the telly and this one on the laptop, multitasking as usual.
I did watch Man Citeh struggle to beat the MLS's worst team last night where it took a late cracker from SWP to decide the match.
I did watch Man Citeh struggle to beat the MLS's worst team last night where it took a late cracker from SWP to decide the match.
I am watching the match on Univision.
Nice scenes of public crowds out for Sunday's final in several cities.
I am watching the interview on MSNBC.
For some reason, I'd read that the Citeh match was to be postponed. But it still went on last night, right? Sorry I missed it.
It was supposed to be due to excessive rain, but some natural turf was laid on top of the artificial turf prior to the match. The match on Saturday vs RSL was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Ah - was that it! Makes sense.
It did go on . Man Citeh came from behind to defeat the Caps 2-1 with goals by John Gaudetti and SWP.
I don't think I know John Gaudetti.
Rachel Maddow gave a better interview than some ex footballers. Perhaps they can watch that interview as part of their training.
Both teams put on their reserves in the second half, making about ten substitutions. Gaudetti must be a regular in the reserves.
Hey Guys,
I am here after work but can't stay long!
I am off to Phllly tomorrow to see the Union vs Everton. I have a friend who is a season ticket holder for the Union so it is completely free!
I then am going to UNITED at the All Star game in NJ with FREE TICKETS AGAIN!
Rachel did a nice job - you could tell that she's enthusiastic.
The second half is underway.
Good evening UWS. I am envious. I am pleased that you will be able to attend those matches, especially Man United vs MLS All stars.
Citeh won but YaYa had to go off with a knee injury. It didn't look very good
Evening, UWS - you are the master of the free tickets.
I just made plans to visit Columbus for the Crew v. Revs match on August 13th with Ed Plunkett (aka "Someone Said") Looking forward to it. The only snag is that it's the first day of the Premiership season. I'll likely blog until about noon and then jump in the car and burn down to Columbus - it's about five hours.
It was the turf. I wonder if he will be available for the start of the season.
Turf will do that to you all the time. It's criminal on the knees.
Thanks MUR
BD, is Gooner going to any matches this summer?
DC United v Everton
THE REAL UNITED v Barcelona?
The player is John Guidetti. He is Swedish and has one Carling Cup appearance for Citeh where he had an assist. He went out on loan to Burnley last season where he scored one goal in five appearances and he was out on loan to a Swedish club.
It wasn't turf. It was real sod that had been laid just the day before. It was pretty horrible
He's definitely going to the Real v. Barca match. I think he may be in Sweden for the Everton match. They're going for two weeks for a family holiday.
Peru have been lively in the early stages of the second half. I would guess that Uruguay are the favorites to win the tournament since Brazil and the Argies have been eliminated.
GOAL! Suarez breaks the deadlock!
GOAL !!! 1-0 URUGUAY AS M. PERREIRA SCORES ON THE REBOUND AFTER THE KEEPER FUMBLED THE ORIGINAL SHOT.
Forlan hit a rocket that was too hot and dipping to handle. Keeper bundled it out and Suarez did an excellent job slotting home from an acute angle.
1-0 Uruguay!
OOPS!!! It was Suarez with the finish from an acute angle.
So, Uruguay were in the semis of the World Cup and now are 35 minutes away from the Copa America final - are Uruguay the best side in South America? You have to wonder....
I meant sod when I was stating turf. UWS is correct that the sod was in horrible condition. It looked like something from the 70's. I feel sorry for Yaya.
They have to be in my opinion. It's all about results and they are getting the results. So I would say yes.
The final could be the battle of the "Guays."
I keep thinking that Argentina have all the quality but they consistently underperform at the big tournaments, particularly Messi.
Guay not?
Boom boom!
2-0! Suarez again! He's on fire!
GOAL !!! 2-0 URUGUAY AS SUAREZ BEATS THE OFFSIDE TRAP, ROUND S THE KEEPER, AND SHOOTS INTO AN EMPTY NET.
Nice one Basil
Nice one son
Nice one Basil
Let's have another one
Long through ball to Suarez who was all alone, Fernandez made a suicidal run out and the Pool man merely ran around him and slotted home. Easy.
Boom Boom Basil,BD.
Cheers, mate!
I don't have the match on so I wouldn't know
Let's just hope Suarez gets all tired and can't play for LiverSox until November!
I am off guys... sorry it was so quick
TTFN
Suddenly Uruguay are ripping Peru apart. No need for penalties tonight for sure.
I received a gift in the mail from my mom yesterday. She mailed a bunch of the " Carry On" movies. Does anyone remember those movies?
Cheerio, mate! Enjoy the match tomorrow!
Cheers UWS.
Love those movies... silly but loved to watch them
Oh yeah - Carry on Screaming was my favorite - a spoof of Frankenstein movies. I can still remember Kenneth Williams yelling, "Frying tonight!"
Will do... I am off this time
Which ones did you get, MUR?
I am not sure. They cam in a USPS box that I opened, but I did not look at the titles. I will have to check, to be honest.
No worries - I'm sure they're all classics. The ones I remember best are Carry on Doctor, Carry on Camper, and Carry on Up the Khyber (it had the historical angle for me!)
I'd love to get together an LOB "Carry On" party one of these days.
I see Carry on Loving, Carry on Camping( a personal favorite), Carry on Girls, Carry on at Your Convienience, Carry on Up the Jungle , and Carry on Henry VIII. I think there are a few others. I see a James Bond movie and The French Connection. They are all VHS tapes.
Yellow card for Diego Lugano - he was due one. Swung the elbow a bit there.
Carry on Doctor was one of my favorites. They sure don't make nurses like they did in the Carry on Movies.
Love the "French Connection!" And of course the Bond films are great memories, particularly the Sean Connery ones.
Definitely watching Barbara Windsor jiggling in a nurse's outfit was a seminal experience for me as a kid.
Oh dear - it's a straight red for Vargas there!
He swung out a petulant arm at Lugano and Lugano went down like a sack of spuds.
Vargas has been sent off for a nasty elbow, right in front of the ref. What a moron! I don't see a way back for Peru.
Actually, I think that might have been Coates rather than Lugano - but Vargas can't have any complaints.
Peru are definitely losing their heads - you're right, MUR.
That was always going to be a red card.Fouls are going to occur, but the elbow was unnecessary.
Two-goal Luis Suarez goes off to a hero's reception. Hernandez on in his stead.
Eguren is on for Gargano.
Eguren on for Gargano as well.
Yes and Hernandez for Suarez.
Well, well, well - the Peruvian striker had a free header there. And he spurned it. That might have been a way back for Peru - but not now.
I agree. Barbara Windsor was a favorite during my adolescent years, for obvious reasons. I was always excited to see her in the movies.
Another corner for Peru. Two crosses are cleared.
Another Peru corner is cleared and Maxi Perreira is fouled on the break. Lebaton is booked for the foul.
Maxi gets hacked by Lobotan and he goes in the book too.
Down to about ten minutes now. This game was over once Suarez scored the second goal. No way back for Peru.
Hernandez shoots straight at the keeper after beating the offside trap, but three defenders came back to make sure he rushed his shot.
I agree BD. Vargas was sent off and it was curtains for Peru.
Balbin shot high and wide from long range in a desperate attempt to get a goal back for Peru.
The Murdoch hearings were fascinating this morning - I wonder what effect this hacking scandal will have on Sky Sports and FSC.
Oh - Muslero just about kept out that shot by Eguren.
Muslera nearly fumbled an effort from Guerrero into the goal , but recovered just in time to gather his fumble.
I wonder what effect it will have on FOX NEWS as well. He and his son should receive the maximum penalty and lose all their assets.
Agreed. Fox News has been very quiet on the subject, as you might expect.
If those stations fail then equivalent stations will replace them, IMHO. I do think that Sky Sports and FSC will survive.
Uruguayan fans doing their "Oles" now appropriately.
If anything survives it will be the sports enterprises, probably the most profitable element of News Corps. business. I wouldn't worry if FSC dropped, though. ESPN would pick up the slack. I already enjoy their coverage more than FSC's.
I agree. This is the appropriate time. They must be favorites to win the whole enchilada.
That is true , BD. FSC can be easily replaced.
We are now entering stoppage time.
Ballon replaces Balbin as Peru make a late substitution. I don't see the point this late in the match.
Hernandez makes a lame attempt for a penalty and the ref is not buying it.
Full-time: Uruguay show us how to do it, winning comfortably 2-0 in regular time. On to the final against either Venezuela or Paraguay.
Forlan shoots high and wide to row z.Wilko would be pleased with that effort.
Uruguay defeat Peru 2-0 as they dominated the second half.
Nice chatting with you, as always MUR. I'll catch you later!
Same here, BD. It's always great chatting with you.I hope to catch you tomorrow.
