Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The Final Countdown!

It's the last day of qualifiers and, while, many of the group winners have been sorted, there are several key matches to follow this afternoon. I'll be teaching, so I'll only be able to pop in now and again during breaks in my classes, but I'll look forward to reading your comments throughout the afternoon.

I am here for a while
Not good news for Scotland so far
They need to match the Czech Repbulic's result BUT
Spain 1 Scotland 0.. no surprise
Lithuania 0 Czech Rep 2

Rep of Ire need only a draw and are winning 2-1. They took a two goal lead but concede almost immediately after scoring their second
Italy 1 NoI 0... doesn't matter

Portugal losing to Denmark 1-0. The Danes would win the group if the score stays the same. Norway are winning 2-1 against Cyprus. They would tie Portugal on points but need something like a 9 goal swing

2047: Anyone for an upset? Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has given Bosnia-Hercegovina a 1-0 lead against France in Paris, in what is effectively a shootout for top spot in Group D. Who fancies France versus Republic of Ireland in the play-offs if that score stays the same? Would be tasty, wouldn't it?

2137: A HUGE goal in Group D, where France have levelled against Bosnia-Herzegovina thanks to Samir Nasri's penalty with 12 minutes to go. If the score stays the same, the French will progress as group winners.

The French match is the only one still going

2142: Nemanja Vidic can put his feet up next summer as Serbia fail to beat Slovenia, meaning that Estonia nick the play-off spot in Group C behind group winners Italy. It wasn't a good night for the Manchester United defender, as he missed a second half penalty. That means the only undecided issue is in Group B, where Bosnia need a goal. Badly.

2154: Right then, that was the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012. Twelve teams are now in the finals: Ukraine (co-hosts), Poland (co-hosts), Germany (Group A winners), Russia (B), Italy (C), France (D), Netherlands (E), Sweden (E best runners-up), Greece (F), England (G), Denmark (H) and Spain (I). Russia, Sweden, Denmark and Greece all sealed their places tonight.

2156: Eight nations will be in the draw for the play-offs, to take place at Thursday lunchtime. They are: Turkey (A), Republic of Ireland (B), Estonia (C), Bosnia-Herzegovina (D), Croatia (F), Montenegro (G), Portugal (H) and Czech Republic (I). Some good teams in the mix there. Only Montenegro were definitely in the play-offs before tonight, although Bosnia, Croatia and Portugal all knew they were guaranteed to finish in the top two

infostradaLive on Twitter: "Eight of the nine qualifying groups have been won by former European champions - England are the exception. The only former European champions that have not qualified yet are Czech Republic. They go to the playoffs."

Thanks for your comments, UWS. Poor old Scotland. They must have hoped that the Spanish would switch off tonight with nothing at stake. Far from it - they've been pummeled by the best side on the planet with goals from Davids Silva and Villa.

And the Czechs have come up trumps with a 1-4 win in Lithuania.

Well done the Irish, though. Fantastic effort here. They'll be part of the play-off draw on Thursday.

News today that the Irish will be seeded for the draw on Thursday

The four unseeded teams are
Turkey, Bosnia, Estonia and Montenegro

Also, I read that the first two pots for the Finals themselves are already set
Pot 1
Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Netherlands

Pot 2 Germany, Italy, England, Russia

In Pot 3 will be Greeece, Sweden and Denmark and the fourth team coming from the playoffs. If Croatia win, they will be in Pot 3
That would make Portugal and France in Pot 4... YIKES!!
The only way France can be in Pot 3is if Croatia and Portugal both lose

Thanks for adding that, Dave. I did see that this morning. I don't know on what basis the Irish are seeded ahead of Turkey (semi-finalists in WC 2002) but I like it nonetheless.

The draw is tomorrow.
