if Chelsea, who are currently sixth in the Premier League, make it past Barcelona and go on to win the Champions League final then they will automatically qualify for next year's competition, taking the place of the team that finishes fourth in the league.
That means that only the top three in the Premier League would get Champions League football next season, rendering the dogfight for fourth place irrelevant.
The qualification rules were changed after Liverpool's Champions League triumph in 2005. Although they won the competition that year they finished fifth in the league and were only entered into the competition after Uefa gave them special dispensation. The Reds were forced to go through qualifying, but in the end only four English teams made it to the group stages as Everton, who had finished above Liverpool in fourth place the season before, were knocked out by Villareal.
But now the rules are clear - the winners of the Champions League will get the chance to defend their title. So, if Chelsea win the competition and finish outside the top four then they qualify and the three other berths go to the top three in the league, although the team that comes third must go through a play-off.
Have Barca really had any good chances beyond that Messi shot into the side netting? They seem frustrated.

Credit to RDM for coming up with a brilliant game plan when they played the majority of the match without a true central defender.BD made a great point about Messi.When the likes of Ivanovic , Lampard, and Mikkel mark you out of the game in a big match then are you really a world class player? This trio is not exactly a group of world beaters, but they did this in the second half.Is this the upset of the season. Finally, if Real make it to the final then it will be an all capital final with a self named Special One as the opposing manager.If this happens , he should be asking himself how the club made it to the final twice when he never accomplished this once.He will be reunited with his former club. However, if he wins then he would be the first manager to win the competition with three different clubs. I agree that they are underdogs since close to half of their starting lineup will be unavailable due to suspension plus whatever injuries may occur, so it may be close to a reserve side in the final. I saw some interesting connections, such as Jose possibly being the opposing manager after leaving the club in bitter cricumstances or the fact that Bayern coould be the first club to host the final since the mid 60s.Either way, I agree that they must be underdogs. I still want them to win the final because it helps the EPL with their UEFA coefficient in terms of the number of CL places.It sounds like Arsenal will be involved in a qualifier as they were back in August despite an impressive third place finish.Chelsea play Newcastle at The Bridge next Wednesday. Could that determine fourth place?
