Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Woy Makes His Choice for England

So, yesterday's rumor mill was correct - Woy has dropped the axe on some old hands (e.g., Rio, Crouchie) and is bringing along some new faces (e.g., Ruddy, Oxlade-Chamberlain). Here's the full squad: Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Citeh), Rob Green (West Ham), John Ruddy (Norwich) Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelski), Ashley Cole (Chelski), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (United), Joleon Lescott (Citeh), John Terry (Chelski) Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Citeh), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Scott Parker (Spurs), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jamie Milner (Citeh), Frank Lampard (Chelski), Theo Walcott (Arsenal) Forwards: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Ashley Young (United), Wayne Rooney (United), Danny Welbeck (United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Spurs) Your thoughts, gentlemen?

Hodgson has said that Rio is not in the squad for football reasons... then why is Downing in the squad?
Why is Henderson on standby and not Carrick?
Why isn't Carrick in it? He was the first choice midfielder for the second best team in the land!

Bob, you put some guy from Wolves in the squad... I ddn't see him

It is a typo. It is supposed to be Glen Johnson of Liverpool, not Roger Johnson of Wolves.I will give my opinion in about an hour, but will start by asking : WOY, WTF WERE YOU THINKING? GET A BRAIN!

Sorry, I've just noticed that. The inclusion of Roger Johnson makes even less sense than Glen Johnson. Still - does anyone else think that four players (plus one as an alternate) from a rubbish Liverpool side that finished eighth is a bit much?

Too many Pool players indeed!

I am going to start by ripping apart this squad. Let's sart with goalkeeper.Yes to Hart and Ruddy ( I told you so several times on LOB), but no to Rob Green. I would have picked Ben Foster, who must feel betrayed by Woy. No Baggies favors there mate. Not even an alternate as Jack Butland is the alternate keeeper. Who the hell is he? Well he is the 19 year old third choice keeper at Brum that was sent on loan to Cheltenham this season to gain experience. He came back after Bo Myhill was injured in the 3-3 draw at Upton Park and is now sitting the bench at St. Andrews. He has never played a first team match for the Blues. Can't figure that out other than he is being drafted from the U-21 squad. Next , the back four. How did Jags fail to make the squad? Ditch Jt and put him in the squad instead of JT . I would have started him with Gary Cahill in the center of defense. Also, how did Micah Richards, who was the starting right back for the EPL champions not even make the squad and not even be put on standby? He would have been my starting right back, but I guess that will be Phil Jones, who was inconssitent in his first season at OT.Next the midfield.Stevie G and Lampard should not be in the same squad. One or the other. I would piuck Stevie G for leadership puprposes and WOY agreed with me for once.I would have never picked Downing nor Jordan Henderson, not even on standby.I would have picked Victor Moses. How is any worse than some of Woy's other choices? Adam Johnson should have been in the squad as a potential sub, if nothing else.Is he any less qualified than Ox, who made only six appearances for the Gunners. Finally the forwards. I would ditch Ox, Andy Carroll, and Dafoe to replace them with Crouch , Grant Holt, and Danny Sturridge. I would put Dafoe on standby. I will post my starting lineup later, but would appreciate any feedback on this rant.

So the rumor mill was correct - McLeish and Dalglish are out. Rio is staying home - JT in the squad. Maybe I'll have to start giving the silly season rumors more credence.

By the way, MUR - I couldn't agree more with most of your comments. The squad has many, many problems. Yes to Jags, Micah Richards, Adma Johnson, Foster, and Sturridge.

The only member of the "Golden Generation" I'd retain is Cashley - otherwise JT, Lamps, Stevie G. - thanks for the memories!

I guess I'm still hopeful that Andy Carroll is coming into a rich vein of form right at the right moment. I'd like to see the French back four try to live with him as he is nearly unplayable at his best.

Oh - Aaron Lennon - where's my LUFC academy boy!!!!?

Oh - and King Kenny has been sacked after having won the Carling Cup this season and Fergie and Arsene get to keep theirs after winning, um, nowt. How does that figure?

I agree, BD. I would have Lennon in place of Lampard. My starting lineup:
Hart, Jones, Baines, Cahill, Lescott,Stevie G, Young Parker,Milner,Welbeck,Dafoe.

It is definitely not a great lineup, but Woy did not give me the easiest task in the world.I would not be surprised to see England eliminated by the time I come to D.C. You are correct that McLeish was sacked, but Kenny resigned. Paul Lambert is the favorite to succeed at Villa Park and Roberto Martinez to succeed Dalglish. Norwich and wigan stated that neither manager is available and Dave Whelan said Liverpool should focus on improving their top level management rather than pestering his club.

Unfortunately, given the draw the margins between success and failure are fine. I reckon that even with the best squad available (including injured players such as Kyle Walker and Jack Wilshere, both of whom would have made my starting XI), England would have played well in the group stages, won the group and then been knocked out gallantly in the quarters by Italy.

Given this group, I expect England will muddle through the group stages, place second to France and then get knocked out unceremoniously by Spain in the quarters.

Well, Dalglish's team was absolutely ATROCIOUS in the league... they lost just as many games as they won!
14 Wins 14 losses and 10 draws
They lost four games at Anfield and more importantly they failed to win 13 out of 19 home games!

Their League Cup win was fortunate on pens to Cardiff and they only started playing in the Cup Final after 65 minutes!
I think the sacking is well deserved. He was given too much leeway because he was King Kenny

Dalglesh was sacked because Liverpool played like poo. But we may also learn later that he walked away--again, before he was pushed. Either way, his P45 should state in bold letters that his handling of the Suarez affair showed him to be unfit to represent LFC and he was sacked. Beating a Championship side on penalties is not enough to defray that. I'd take some moistened bint lobbing a scimitar at me before I'd let Dalglesh within 100 miles of my club. This time, stay away.

I humbly disagree with you two. Let's remember that, despite Liverpool's inconsistent form over the season, they were one of only three sides to lift a trophy this season. That used to mean something, but in the era of the Champions League, a fourth place finish makes a manager looks like a genius while winning a trophy gets you the sack. I don't get it.

I have to agree with UWS and Gooner. Liverpool were really poor this season and were lucky to win the Carling Cup.They struggled against a side that were not good enough to be promoted to the EPL, being outplayed by them in parts of that final. The poor handling of the Suarez affair probably clinched and was partially played a role in his sacking. The ownership was partially at fault too. I do agree , BD, that a trophy means something, but if you weigh the pros and cons , we would have been surprised to see Kenny in charge this August.Third and fourth place is a good position . Also, I would not sack Fergie. It is impossible to win every single season and he was stoppage time plus a sending off away from the EPL. I want him around for a good while. MUR stands for Man United Rants!
