Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

If it's Tuesday...it must be 2014 World Cup Qualifiers!

It's another day of important World Cup qualifiers today, as England travel to Poland looking for a big away win. It would also be helpful if Ukraine were to nick a couple of points off Montenegro in their home fixture. Alas, I'll be teaching this afternoon, so I'll be in and out checking the scores on my breaks. However, I will be around later tonight as the US take on Guatemala in a "must-draw" match. See you then!

In some of the early kick-offs, Russia have eked out a 1-0 win on Azerbaijan that puts more pressure on the Portugeezers. Israel are also predictably 3-0 up over Luxembourg.

It's being reported that this is the 1st XI today.

Hart; Johnson, Jagielka, Lescott, Cole; Gerrard, Carrick; Cleverley, Rooney, Milner; Defoe

What's that? 4-2-3-1?

Bugger - Montenegro are 0-1 up at half time in Ukraine. Pull your fingers out, lads!

A very heavy downpour and shambolic preparations by the Polish host are pointing to this game being postponed, possibly until tomorrow. Evidentally, there is a deep pool of standing water in one of the goals. None of the England staff are using umbrellas for fear of a reprise of "Wally in the brolly."

4-1 Ireland over the Faroes

2-0 Croatia over Wales.

1-0 Italy over Denmark, but surely Nik Bendtner still has time to net the perfect, left-foot, right-foot, in off the bum of his Paddy Pants hat-trick so no worries there.

Oh, and the rain is still bucketing down in Poland so no football tonight. That's official. No word on whether it's simply postponed until tomorrow or whether that rainy away night in Katowice will occur later, on a designated international night of friendlies.

Scotland and Belgium tied at naught still.

And the Dutch putting Romania to the schword, 4-1. RVP nets one at the death there.

Thanks for the updates, Gooner. I particularly enjoyed the "Wally with the Brolly" reference.

England are still on top of the Group H charts tonight, albeit now only on goal difference as Montenegro squeezed out a 0-1er in Ukraine. So both sides are on 7 points from 3 matches, with England having a three goal advantage.

Moldova have got three points from a 0-2 win in San Marino tonight. They're on 4 points from 4 matches now. But it really is down to two teams from three - England, Mont and Poland.

More updates:

Northern Ireland got a creditable 1-1 draw in Lisbon as Israel are tied for second place with Portugal.
Sweden were four down in Germany with thirty minutes remaining and in an incredible comeback drew 4-4.

Canada needed a draw in Honduras to advance to the final round of qulalifying, but blew it and lost 8-1.

So far, Mexico , Honduras ,and Panama are through to the hexagonal.

I'm home from work now and looking forward to tonight's US v. Guatemala qualifier.

Both teams merely need a draw tonight, so some Anschluss football might be in store. But I hope not - I'd love to see a convincing US win and a Jamaica win to knock out the Guatemalans.

Some spirited singing of the anthems there. You don't get that at your average NFL game, eh?

The starting XI for the US:

Howard, Cameron, Bocanegra, Cherundolo, Parkhurst, Bradley, Williams, Zusi, Johnson, Dempsey Gomez.

Very attacking, as it was the other night.

And we're off!

Ian Darke and Double T are trying to pump up the intrigue but I can't imagine any other result than the US getting through the hexagonal.

Oh - Eddie Johnson - the hero from the other night - got to the by-line and crossed well across the six yard box. No one to tape home!

This is anything but Anschluss football, as both sides are really going for it. Terrifically exciting start so far.

Relief all around....

Boca's 14th goal in US colors - the highest scoring defender now in US history. Well done, Carlos!

Still goalless between Jamaica and Antigua. They won't be able to go through anyway if this remains tied.

The US and Guatemala are absolutely even on both goals scored and goal difference - 9 goals for and 6 goals against.

GOAL! Dempsey! We're plain sailing it now. Great move and finish.

The danger there again came from Eddie Johnson who looks a player reborn. Fantastic to see him back at his best.

Now then - Jamaica has scored, so the Guats are now under pressure. They still have superior GD to Jamaica but I hope we can put a few more by them.

7:34 PM

Fantastic - Jamaica are now 2-0 up! Their goal difference is now the same as the Guats. This couldn't be going any better tonight.

GOAL! Dempsey again! 3-1! And the Guats are in real danger now, one goal behind Jamaica!

Half-time - Very, very satisfying despite that early blip. US now coasting 3-1 and the Guats are heading out. Lovely jubbly!

Dane Richards has just put Jamaica 3-1 up vs Antigua.

8:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That was a vital goal by Dane Richards as Jamaica now have a +2 goal difference while GUat have +1. Both teams are level on points. That would put Jamaica through to the hexagonal by the slimmest of margins

The U.S. win 3-1 as they are through to the hexagonal thanks to a brace from Clint and one from Bocanegra. Jamaica have defeated Antigua 4-1 and have qualified ahead of Guat on goal difference.

LOVELY JUBBLY!

Sorry to have missed you. A friend popped for the second half and the first bit of the debate coverage, so I had to play host.

Very happy with the results tonight, which put the odious Guatemalans out of the picture for the next four years. Good riddance to them. And Tubby Ruiz should have retired by the next time we have to face them.
