A Wintry Soccer Saturday
A very wintry good morning to all of you LOBers. It's a fine day to waste half the day watching the good stuff. I've already been out on the tundra, fetched my bagels and am back in Blue Devil HQ anticipating a cracking day, starting with Spurs v. Newcastle, peaking with Wolves v. Leeds and culminating with Soton v. Citeh. Join me for all the usual high jinks, won't you?
645 Comments:
Wahay - the preview show has started on ESPN2 live from Shite Fart.
The teams news:
Spurs - Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Caulker, Naughton, Lennon, Parker, Dembele, Holtby, Dempsey, Bale.
Subs: Friedel, Vertonghen, Adebayor, Gallas, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Assou-Ekotto.
Nouveau Chateau: Krul, Debuchy, Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Santon, Perch, Sissoko, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Gouffran, Cisse.
Subs: Harper, Anita, Yanga-Mbiwa, Marveaux, Shola Ameobi, Tiote, Obertan.
Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)
Spurs kick us off and are straight into the attack through Bale who whips a great ball over for Demps. Inches away.
Good morning , BD. Hope you are staying warm. I have coffee brewing
Spurs stroking it about Shite Fart for fun. Newcastle seem to still be on the bus. Free kick chance for Bale now.
Colloccini fouls Clint just outside the box.
Morning, MUR - I'm nice and cozy. No need to go out today.
GOAL! It's that man Bale again - brilliant free kick!
GOAL!!!! 1-0 SPURS. WHAT A FREE KICK BY BALE. IT TOOK AN AWKWARD BOUNCE.
An improvised Ronaldo-style free kick that got up and down really quickly. The wall somewhat feel apart there around James Perch. Krul had no chance.
1-0!
The girls and I may go out this afternoon.
We won't be watching "Finding Nemo."
Newcastle are six points clear of Wigan in the dropzone but they can't be complacent.
We're watching "The Wrath of Nemo!" But at least we're not in Boston, eh? They really got whacked.
It was Desmond between Udinese West and Palace last night. UW blew a two goal halftime lead . Palace manager, Ian Holloway called UW a foreign team.I don't see anything wrong with it.
Oh - Holtby had a chance there but leaned back on the shot. Always going over.
Just over by Lewis Holtby after the Frenchmen failed to clear. Sacre Bleu!
Agreed, BD. Not a good time to be in Boston or for that matter, Glenville may be getting some of Nemo.
That's a good result for us, I suppose in the Championship. Zola won't be happy. Holloway is kidding himself with those prehistoric ideas. Newcastle have 11 French players in the dressing room today.
Harlingen was spared the wrath of Nemo.
Yes, I suspect that UWS is hibernating and trying to repress the need to snowblow the driveway.
Glad to hear it - you don't want any part of Nemo.
Agreed,BD. I don't see anything wrong with it. The Italian owner of UW owns the real Udinese and Spanish club, Granada from where he took a few players on loan to UW as well.
Inverness have taken the lead against Celtic nine minutes in.
It had been in the 80s , but the front passed through yesterday and it was only in the low 70s.
I wouldn't mind a few of those Udinese sloppy seconds at Elland Road.
That sounds ideal for you and the family. What are you up to this afternoon with the girls?
If Inverness lead then Celtic will only have a twelve point lead in the SPL as this is battle between first and second.
That sounds like a farcical situation in the SPL.
Oh - Holtby scuffed his shot wide after some marauding work by Caulker. The Anglo-German doesn't have his shooting boots on today.
Hey Boys,
I am here
I watched the beginning of the match upstairs. Decent goal by Bale
I will have to leave to snowblow the driveway like you mentioned before.
We actually didn't get much snow yesterday at all. We were supposed to get 18 inches but only 7. I should never have had a snow day yesterday but did! Not complaining though
Not sure, BD. It should be a lovely day. we will be attending a concert this evening where the Harlingen school district music teachers will be performing
Did you have a chance to see the replay of the England v. Brazil match? Very happy with the look of England.
The US tragedy in Honduras is another story.
Good morning UWS. Glad you were spared the full wrath of Nemo. Hope that does not delay summer vacation.
Morning, UWS - seven inches doesn't sound like a bad return from Nemo. About what we got here, maybe less. Bivalve was saying she got 20 inches in Rhode Island. Cor!
Headed wide by Cisse that should have been 1-1
OH! Just over by Holtby off a nice pass from Lennon
Oh - Holtby wastes yet another chance. Lennon put it on a plate for him. If one or two had fallen to Demps, we could be at 3-0 Spurs.
A very open match so far, but I can't see how Ian thinks Newcastle have been playing well. If Holtby could hit the side of a barn, Spurs would be rolling over them.
Agreed, BD. I saw both matches. Good performance by England, especially Young Jack. Horrible by the U.S. They wilted in the heat and were really lethargic. Jurgen is ripe for the sack
The same could be said about Cisse. Newcastle have had a few chances.
Cisse nearly beat the offside trap there.
I can only see Jurgen getting the sack if the US don't qualify - and that ain't happening.
Emmanuel Adebayor has apparently gone walkabout in Togo!
GOAL! Newcastle are back in it - Guiffran!
1-1
The French Connection
GOAL! 1-1 AS GOUFRAN SCORES HIS FIRST FOR THE TOON WITH A LOVELY FINISH
Good interplay between Cisse and Guiffran. The shot was horribly deflected off Dawson's back, leaving Lloris with no chance.
1-1!
Great assist by Cisse.
LUFC wins a corner off of Santon. Hand ball not called.
Ade did not go walkabout . Togo were eliminated from the ANC last weekend.
Great block by Taylor from Bale
Spurs are back down to fourth again based on that equalizer.
Mexico held 0-0 by Jamiaca in the Azteca. The Reggae Boyz missed two sitters at the end. El Tri booed off the pitch as Jamaica were too fast and athletic for El Tri. Mexican Fans were shouting Ole as Jamaica kept possession at the end of the match
Pretty impressive

Raffa will be pleased as his blues host Wigan today
Sounds like a great link, UWS.
Bale is claiming handball against Debuchy - nothing doing. Corner.
Bale has a volley deflected off of Debuchy for a corner off a pass from Holtby
The corner eludes everyone.
If the U.S. play like they did in Honduras then they will be watching the World Cup on the telly.
Great break by Sissoko, but Cisse could not control his pass.
Off to do the driveway... I'll be back
I can't quite see it. Even if the US were to slip to 4th, they'd still get a play-off chance for qualification against the Oceania winners - probably the Kiwis.
Macca having a go at Darke for his corny jokes now.
Cabaye has a shot deflect off of Dawson for a corner.
Cabaye with a great corner, but oddly, nobody attacked it,.
Cheers, UWS. Hope to see you soon.
Could be, BD. It's a strong hex this time with no easy opponents. Are the U.S. doing any better with Jurgen than Coach B?
I cant' see the Toon being relegated now that they have had a great January transfer window.
I was up at 6:30 this morning and it's catching up with me - might have a power kip on the magic couch at half time.
Nice pass from Jonas to Cabaye, but he couldn't quite control it and it rolled to Lloris
Me too. The coffee has done its' job up to this point
I was talking with Gooner about that the other night. We reckon that the US are worse now than in 2010, not all to do with Jurgen but he certainly hasn't improved matters. It doesn't help to have Landycakes throwing the bottle out of the pram.
Clint wins a corner off of Taylor.
I need a refill at half time.
Agreed, BD. I'm not sure what's up with that, but the new generation does not look too promising. El Tri, Jamiaca,Honnduras, and Costa Rica are all good enough to finish above the U.S. if the Yanks don't get their fingers out of their asses.Qualification is not guarenteed.
Me too. I drank most of Elizabeth's Rolling Rocks.
You'll need to hit the off-license then to refill Elizabeth's supply.
Have you ever watched " Hot in Cleveland?" The British lady is always making Man Yoo references.
No - I've never heard of it - what channel is it on?
I think so. She was none too pleased.
One minute of stoppage time. It's on TV Land.
Kris Commons has equalized for Celtic at Inverness.
Half time at Shite Fart. 1-1.
Halftime and 1-1 at WHL.
Celtic lead now lead 1-2 at Inverness as Rami Gershon, the Israeli international defender , has scored. A win will put Celtic eighteen points clear off Callie and fifteen points clear of second place Motherwell.
Make that 1-3 to Celtic as Nicolas Flores Miku, the Venezuelan international, scores.
The second half is underway from SFL
Celtic have won 1-3 at Inverness Callie.About time to lift the SPL trophy.
Great Spurs possession , but Holtby had a shot blocked by Collocini
Jonas has a cross deflect off of Caulker for a corner.
The corner was headed out by Bale and Taylor volleyed straight to Lloris
Toon owner , Mike Ashley , was five minutes late for the second half. Poor unless he was constipated. He signed Alan Pardew to an eight year contract
Clint straight at Krul from long range
Goufran , down holding his calf.
This will be a huge loss for Nouveau Chateau as Goufran is being stretchered off. He has made a great start to his Toon career. Marveaux will come on in his place.Like for like in many ways.
Goufran taking Oxygen too. This is becoming more serious than I had originally anticipated.
The replay showed it was a fairly innocuous challenge by Kyle Walker. An odd one.
Goufran is off on a stretcher with a great applause from Toon fans and Marveaux is on.
There should be quite a bit of stoppage time.
Ou es BD?
I'm back from the magical couch to see goalscorer Guiffran stretchered off. Like Arsene, I did not see the incident.
Great pass from LUFC Academy to Parker, but it was superbly cut out.
Welcome back, BD.I saw it and can't quite figure it out. It came off a fairly innocuous challenge from Kyle Walker. He must have pulled something
Ian mentioned 85 degree heat in Honduras. We had a few days of that ourselves.
Two consecutive corners for Spurs as Walkers wins one off of Collocini
Jonas heads out for another, but Krul catches the next one.
I am back after the driveway clearing and walking Shadow
Didn't miss any goals!
who's been on top?
Great tackle by Perch on Bale as the Welshman is down, holding his knee.
Oh - too bad. Great ball to Debuchy but the Frenchman's cross was rubbish.
Bale is down getting some magic spray on his ankle.
Hello UWS. Welcome back. It's been a fairly even match. Spurs perhaps the slightly better team
Great pressing by Clint. A shame he could not do that on Wednesday. Ade on for Holtby.
Trying to get a Soccer Saturday link
Everything says blocked plug in
Sorry to hear that. I haven't tried it yet. Hope you can get on.
Dawson easily heads away a free kick from Cabye.
I would expect about eight to ten minutes of stoppage time due the Gouffran injury
Ade off the pace.
Adebayor still seems to be in Togo.
Who got hurt?
Assiou- Ekotu on for Kyle Naughton.
Odd substitution - Assou-Ekotto on. Don't they need a goal?
The Newcastle goalscorer Guiffran.
Gouffran , the Toon scorer, was down for a good while before being stretchered off. Marveaux came on in his place.
It was like for like . perhaps AVB feels that Assiou-Ekotu can add width down the left.
GOAL! Bale again! 2-1 Spurs!
GOAL !!! 2-1 SPURS AS BALE HAS A BRACE AS HE GOT BEHIND THE TOON DEFENSE AND EASILY BEAT KRUL AT THE NEAR POST.
Raffa will not be pleased.
Simple goal - a big punt up field, Ade held it up and Bale did the rest, profiting off some indecision in the Newcastle backline and running half the pitch and slotting home through Krul.
Another error in the Toon defense, But LUFC Academy overran it and Collocini was there to mop up
An assist for Lloris? Tiote to come on.Am odd one as the Toon need a goal
That should have been 3-1 as Krul completely missed the corner from Bale and Caulker headed wide , missing an open goal. Tiote on for Perch
This link is working for me for Soccer Saturday:
http://www.firstrow1.eu/watch/167976/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
What are these managers thinking with these subs? Assou-Ekotto? Tiote? Don't they have any strikers on the bench?
Shola Ameobi on for Jonas as the Toon need another late goal
definitely odd decisions, BD,.
Team news out of Molineux:
Wolves: Ikeme, Ward, Berra, Batth, Foley, Henry, Sako, O'Hara, Doumbia, Ebanks-Blake, Doyle. Subs: De Vries, Margreitter, Edwards, Hunt, Davis,Sigurdarson, Cassidy.
Leeds: Kenny, Byram, Peltier, Lees, Warnock, Green, Brown, Norris, Varney, Morison, McCormack. Subs: Ashdown, Pearce, White, Barkley, Tonge, Hall, Habibou.
Referee: R East
Great save by Krul from Blae on the break as he tipped over to prevent a hat-trick
Krul catches the corner from Bale as Bale got behind the defense in similar fashion to the goal
Tiote with a typical foul on Bale.
AVB back to his Preying Mantis " position.
A fair few tackles flying in now. Cabaye could easily be walking.
Cabaye booked for a rash foul on LUFC Academy
Finally back
I have the desktop on SS and I now have a school laptop on the couch getting on LOB. With me blogging on the desktop, I miss a lot of the footer. Hopefully, I will do better today
It was actually on Dembele and could have easily been a red.
Seven minutes of stoppage time. Welcome back, BD.
Dembele is hobbling off now - that was nasty.
I couldn't get the link to work on Safari. I have it working on Firefox
Seven minutes plus more after this injury
Sorry. I meant welcome back, UWS. It will probably be eight minutes of stoppage time.
I guess a safari at Woburn Abbey was not in the cards.
Livermore is going to replace Dembele.
Jake Livermore on for dembele, which will add to the stoppage time.
Headed well wide by Clint from the free kick
Ameobi came close there
Corner cleared
That could have been desmond as it broke to Shola Ameobi and Lloris did just enough to block his effort. Spurs on the break off the corner and Santon blocks from Livermore.
Spurs will finish here in third place at least temporarily. Chelski kick off against Wigan at the Bridge at the top of the hour.
It is so weird about added times these days. You see old games from the 70s and 80s. Of course, you didn't have the time posted and there only seemed a few minutes added all the time
Spurs to go third!!!
Shola is lectured by Dowd for back talk
I heard on SS that Becchio starts for the Canaries today
Oh - Bale blows a huge chance to snatch his second hat-trick of the season!
Mix up in the box.. Bale misses an open goal
How did Bale fail to get the hat-trick. Great save by Krul then he balloons the rebound over.
Interesting. I hope he does well. Steve Morison has his debut for Leeds today, replacing Spitty in the starting eleven.
Another great save by Krul from Bale on the break. Corner to Spurs.
That's that, then - Spurs with another useful home win. Newcastle probably won't get dragged back in but they can't be complacent.
End to end stuff.. the toon have a chance and then Spurs.
Bale was a ball hog there... just looking for the hat-trick
Spurs keep it by the corner flag and run out the clock as they defeat Nouveau Chateau 2-1
Game over
You were ahead of me. You posted the end before my whistle.. bloody ESPN 2 in Glenville
for Nouveau Chateau it was to no avail as they failed to stop Bale.
Holt has back spasms.. that's why Becchio gets the start
Chelsea vs Wigan on FSC and Sunderland vs Arsenal on plus
I am going to start early
Oh when the Saints
Go marching in
Oh when the Saints
Go marching in
I want to be with that number
Oh when the Saints
Go marching in
Are Spurs finish third or fourth or worse?
Is fourth in danger of not making the CL? Arsenal to the CL and knock Spurs out ala Chelsea last year??
Carl Jenkinson comes in for Laurent Koscielny in a late change to the Arsenal line-up.
LINE-UPS - Chelsea v Wigan (1500 GMT)
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole, Luiz, Ramires, Oscar, Lampard, Hazard, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Mata, Ferreira, Marin, Ba, Benayoun, Bertrand.
Wigan: Al Habsi, Stam, Scharner, Caldwell, Figueroa, McCarthy, McArthur, Beausejour, Espinoza, Maloney, Di Santo. Subs: Robles, Kone, Jones, Henriquez, Gomez, McManaman, Golobart.
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)
The talk after the England match was that Chelsea had done a U-Turn on signing Frank. Now, it seems nothing has changed
I have Soccer Saturday on and PIP. Sunderland vs Arsenal the big picture.
spurs would fail to make the CL by finsihing fourth only if the Gunners win the CL. Otherwise , fourth will make the CL.
They're off from the Bridge and the SOL. It kicked off about three seconds earlier at the Bridge.
The Leeds blankie is on, MOT is blaring, which means one thing - come on, the Whites!
Headed over by new Sunderland signing, N' Diyae, then Mignolet rushes out to gather before Theo could connect
Too warm for a blankie in Harlingen
Theo has nearly scored at the SoL. And Lee Clattermole should have been given a red for a nasty one on Ramsey.
Rash by Lee Cattermole on Ramsey. Fortunate not to be booked.
Come on Wigan
According to SS, Arsenal make a very bright start at the SOL
We start in 12th, just about above the top half. Need three points today against a bottom half side.
Thjeo was through and shot right at Mignolet. FSC a few seconds behind Soccer Staurday
That's ridiculous - with a player like Clattermole, you need to card him for the first challenge. That's the only way to control him.
The Gunners have
Wigan with a decent start at the Bridge.
Oh - great save by Cech with his feet. Wigan nearly in there.
ooh, decent effort from DeSantos
Wigan started well
Luv it if they get something from here
Welcome back. On his own return from injury, Dimitar Berbatov gets a boot to the head from Bradley Johnson. The Bulgarian is leaking blood and is off down the tunnel for some stitches.
A couple of early corners earned by the Whites. We're making the early pace.
Another decent effort by Wigan
Cech makes another excellent save - this time from Maloney.
Great save by Cech. Wigan wsurprisingly the better team
Michu has scored a tap in to give Swansea the lead.
Michu gives Swansea the lead vs QPR. LOVELY!
Barnsley have taken the early lead at Boro.
