Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The national anthems were played and despite predictions that the vast majority of fans would be Salvadorans it seemed like a 50-50 split from what I observed.
A near capacity crowd except from some empty seats in the upper deck.
The U.S. vs El Salvador is underway
GOAL !!!! 1-0 US . CLARENCE GOODSON SCORES FROM CLOSE RANGE OFF A PASS FROM LANDY. IT ALL STARTED WITH A SHORT CORNER FROM LANDY.JOE CORONA TOOK A SHORT CORNER TO LANDY, WHO PLAYED A ONE TWO WITH PARKHURST, THEN LANDY SPLIT THE DEFENSE WITH A PERFECT PASS FOR GOODSON TO SCORE.
El Salvador nearly tied it up on the counter as Rimando made a great double save, first with his feet from a shot in the six yard box then turned the rebound around the post.
GOAL 2-0 U.S. JOE CORONA WITH A GREAT FINISH.
A long U.S possession . Landy passed to Wondo, who was double teamed and passed to Corona in the D, who was unmarked, and scored with a great finish.
Nearly 3-0 . Portillo blocks from Parkhurst. Great save
Landy took the corner short to Parkhurst , who crossed to Corona and he headed straight to Portillo with a free header. Should have been 3-0.
Portillo with a comfortable save from Landy off a nice run and pass from Beasely.
What a save by Portillo from Corona off a run and pass from Landy.
EL sLAVADOR HAS A PENALTY AS ZELAYA BASICALLY RAN INOT BEASELY. SOFT CALL.
GOAL ZELAYA SCORES A CHEEKY PENALTY AND PULL IT BACK TO 2-1 . WAS NEVER A PEN, IMHO.
Everyone else thinks it was a great call, saying Beasely obstructed Zelaya, but I think Zelaya went down really easily.
Portillo tips a shot from Beckerman around the post.
Halftime and 2-1 to the U.S. and what a first half. The U.S. dominated, but El Salvador back in the match thanks to a soft penalty
The second half is underway.El Salvador with two halftime substitutions.
El Salvador attack from the off and Cernen shoots straight at Rimando.
El Slavador nearly sliced apart the U.S. defense again as Zelaya Split the defense with a perfect pass and Santa Maria shot over with just Rimando to beat
Now Zelaya shoots inches wide from the edge of the box.
Portillo with a superb save from Beckerman then Wondo with a wild cross that eludes everyone.
Eddie Johnson on for Wondo as the U.S. gets ready to take a corner.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
EDDIE JOHNSON SCORES WITH A HEADER OFF THE CORNER 3-1.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
EDDIE JOHNSON SCORES WITH A HEADER OFF THE CORNER 3-1.
Great corner from Landy and a rocket of header from Eddie Johnson seconds after coming on for Wondo.
Diskerud has a shot deflected for a corner after Landy rounded the keeper , but had too narrow an angle to shoot.
El Salvador counter off the U.S. corner and Menjivar finds row z with a great opportunity to score.
Break Shea comes on for Francisco Torres. Shea with a great run down the left.He passes to Johnson , who passes to Beckerman , whose powerful effort is well saved by Portillo and Landy shoots the rebound wide.
Cernen booked for an off the ball foul. Poor and a cheap shot.
Nice cross from Parkhurst to Eddie Johnson , who shoots over, unmarked from the edge of the box.
Great run down the right by Eddie Johnson, and Landy slides in to try and score, but can't make the right contact
The announcer just stated that Eddie Johnson scored fifteen seconds after coming on as a sub.
The final roll of the dice for El Salvador as Gerson Maya is on for Zelaya.A huge loss for El Salvador as Zelaya has been their only scorer in this competition
Jurgen counters as Jonathan Orozco is on for Matt Beasler
It starts to rain and is it raining on El Salvador's chances of staying in this competition?
GOAL !!!! 4-1 U.S. GOODSON WITH A BACK PASS TO RIMANDO. HIS LONG CLEARANCE WAS HEADED ON BY EDDIE JOHNSON TO LANDY WHO SCORED WITH JUST PORTILLO TO BEAT. THIS ONE IS DONE AND DUSTED.
GOAL !!!! DISKERUD HEADS IN A CROSS FROM LANDY TO MAKE IT 5-1. LANDY HAD A SHOT BLOCKED BECKERMAN VOLLEYED A PASS TO LANDY AND HIS SUPERB CROSS WAS HEADED IN BY DISKERUD. A HAT-TRICK OF ASSISTS FOR LANDY.
OH! Superb save by Portillo from Landy then Enriquez clears the rebound off the line from Landy.
Beckerman volleys straight to Portillo off the corner. Poor by Salvadoran fans, throwing plastic bottles on the pitch because Landy cheekily put on the linesman's sun glasses prior to the corner. Their team has been well beaten and they need to deal with it.
Henriquez fouls Beasely just outside the box moments after the U.S. missed a great chance to score. The free kick is cleared and there are two minutes of stoppage time.
It's over and the U.S. with an easy 5-1 win over a an El Salvador. No sympathies for Yours Truly as the players and fans acted poorly and they deserve this thrashing after acting in this manner.
Honduras defeat Costa Rica 1-0 in the other quarter thanks to a header from former DC United player, Andy Najar. It was an ill tempered and poorly officiated match .They will face the U.S. in the semis in Dallas on Wednesday.
That's it for me . Over and out.
Nicely done MUR. I totally snoozed on this match. First I didn't realize that the QF's would likely set up a US match in Charm City, just down the road for me. I'd made plans in any case.
I watched the match on reply, the first half last night and the second half this morning. I was really surprised by the Cuscatlecas, first because they seemed to fade so quickly in the heat and humidity, and secondly, they didn't dive in and nobble one of our guys when the jig was up at 4-1.
But apart from Burgos and Zelaya, who cares about the Salvadorans? They're also-rans in the conference and separated from the Hellscape and the variety of missles thrown on the pitch at home, they're rubbish.
I thought some US players continued to press their claim for inclusion in the squad, Besler and Goodson, Beckerman and Diskerud, and Eddie Johnson, among the most eye-catching. Shea is too green and barring a real shortage, should be thought of as someone to keep an eye on for after Brazil. Wondo didn't have his best game. Of all the US players, I thought he was the most put off by the diving and shirt pulling cheating on display from ES. He'll run into that again from all the Central American teams and Mexico, so he's got to sort out a plan for himself. Donovan looked really good too at times.
So, onwards to Wednesday and a match up with the Hondurans. It won't be a skate, but I fancy us now.
Thanks Gooner. I completely agree. I think Wondo has harmed his chances of being in Klinnsman's future plans, showing that he can score against Cuba or Belize, but having a tough time against any opponents of a higher caliber than those two. As you stated, other than Zelaya , Burgos, and even the keeper, what did the Salvadorans offer? Anyway, Zelaya is a lightweight that can be physically intimidated and goes to ground if contacted even by a paper clip. Skillful, but kind of a vile sort. A summary of that team is that Zelaya was their only scorer. Shut him down and the Salvadorans have not attack. Definitely also rans despite the cocky attitude of their fans.
I do agree with you assessments of the U.S. players except for Brek Shea. I think he is one of the borderline players and this season will determine whether or not he is on the plane to Brazil. Also, Landy , with a hat-trick of assists surely has regained his play as a fixture in the squad. He has three goals and six assists. What else does he have to do to prove himself? Surely he has redeemed himself for his idiotic behavior.
