Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Evening, fellas. Not a lot of build-up for this one. NBC Sports is finishing up its daily round-up of the Tour de France action.
Good evening. Tour De France es finis.
The US is on a four game winning streak at this point, largely down to Jozy Altidore's four game scoring streak. He has a chance to make history tonight.
Evening, MUR - big shock of the night. Landycakes is back!
This is the perfect opportunity. Great to be chatting with you.
I had a feeling we hadn't seen the back of Landycakes.
Oh dear - it's a panel of two guys I've never seen before on this coverage. MLS scrub Kyle Martino doing the side-line coverage.
Why on earth would Jurgen even consider Landycakes? He's not been around for the clutch qualifiers that the rest of the squad has been gutting out.
Also the chance to see what type of commentators will be around for the Prem matches this coming season.
Good point. Is Landycakes past it? This is a chance to see.
Who is the great Arlo White?
The Gooch? Bloody Hell. Rolling back the years.
Beasley skippering the side? Rolling back the years isn't the half of it. What's the point of this shower? Is this what Jurgen is going to run out for the Gold Cup?
Not sure. At this point I guess Lexi may be brought back in.
Nick Rimando? WTF? He must be playing an experimental squad for the Gold Cup.
I hate to say this , but this match is going to end really late on the East Coast.
Some scarves say United We Stand. They should read UWS.
According to the Gooner, Nick the Magic Dwarf is now the US's #3 option behind Timmy and Guzan.
No worries - I actually slept the sleep of the dead last night. Went to bed before midnight and woke up at 10:30!
I guess he wants to give the reserves a chance during the Gold Cup, do perhaps it makes some sort of sense.
"United We Stand" is the 9/11 charity, isn't it?
Btw, UWS - who he? Haven't heard from the lad in yonks. Where are you, mate? Let's be having ya!
Lucky you. I woke up at 6:30 this morning. Went to bed when we came home, but feel really well rested. Glad you are well rested.
How many bloody commercial breaks can NBC Sports possibly take?
He is either working on the new house or taking Shadow for really late walkies. A late shift for UWS. I think it is the 9/11 charity.
Yeah - when I'm sick, I take the cold meds and don't set the alarm. I sleep as much as I can. Back at it tomorrow.
IS this what we have to look forward to during the Prem Season? Not looking forward to the announcers either.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I am enjoying the start of a six week vacation. A great way to start.
I've just texted UWS - he says he's too knackered to watch. I just called him a big poof.
I can usually knock out a typical cold in about two or three days if I have the ability to just sleep, read and watch telly. That's all I've been doing.
A moment of silence for the nineteen Arizona firefighters who lost their lives.
He seems to be one. Knackered from working on the house because it's not from teaching.
Uh oh - Jamaican ref. This could get entertaining. And we're away.
They're off from Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego./
I was thinking the same.
Apparently he was entertaining some friends. He's an embarrassment to Untied fans. Fergie would give him the hairdryer.
Guatemala with the first attack and Jonathan Lopez blazes over with a cross/ shot.
Cagey opening minutes at Qualcomm.
Absolutely. He's too busy for footie , but complains when you have friends over.
A boot to the eye for UWS.
The announcers are horrible. Not a good sign for the upcoming season.
Nice to see former Rev Michael Parkhurst in the side.
Not a good sign at all; I shudder to think what we've got in store for the new season.
It's an almost all MLS squad with a few Mexican league players thrown in.
The bounce of the ball seems odd - are they playing on turf?
Horrible give away by Kyle Beckerman then he concedes a free kick,
Which ones play in the MLS?
I think it's natural grass in San Diego.
evening lads. i hope these scrubs don't put us off the real business of qualifying for the wc above mexico.
Oh - you mean the US side. That is unusual.
I think just about all of the starting lineup plays in MLS>
Correct. The U.S. side.
Evening, Gooner. I'm feeling a bit more reassured after you reminded me that European clubs started their training this week, so that the real side isn't available.
Just wide by Milo Lopez Kyle Beckerman was caught out yet again .
Beckerman did well to track back there when his defense broke down. Minor Lopez going close.
Goodness, some Luexh lookalike bloke should have buried that loose ball
I was thinking about that and wondering if Klinsmann made a deal not to play European based players
Beasley rolling back the years with that run but the ball in was behind Gomez.
Good evening Gooner. How was the concert?
Please, the Adams family butler's first name is Minor?
Hercules Gomez called for a foul on Trujillo and the fans are not pleased.
Must be the case, MUR. I would hope that this lot is just playing for slots #18-24 or so.
Is it? The Addams Family Butler is Lurch , I believe.
Joe Corona - who he?
I think Gooner was jesting that Minor looks a wee bit like Lurch, no?
Based on this performance, they are playing like they should be in slots 100-104.
First decent free kick situation for the US.
LOL, MUR!
Perhaps. He probably was. Joe Corona is an American who is also eligible to play for Mexico. He plays in the Mexican League.
Missed it David. Melanie and Eric didn't get back from Maryland in time and the METRO is completely knackered this weekend. The Blue line is single tracking ever 20 minutes from my station to the stop beyond the airport, and then I have to connect to the Orange which has a station closed and I'd have to ride the bus. I know the Torches would be late starting so I just bagged the show. I bought their record through Kickstarter so I've done my bit
Into the wall by Hercules Gomez and headed backward by Beckerman./
Gomez has a go from distance but it's straight into the bottom of the wall. Poor.
The commentator cites Beasley's wonderful 2002 Gold Cup campaign. That was bloody 11 years ago, mate!
Where's Pablo Mastroenni now, eh?
Sorry to hear you had a difficult evening with the metro. Poor form on their part. Glad you were able to get the record and glad you are able to join us.
True, Bob. That's ancient history.
The U.S. wins their first corner of the match.
Doesn;t Castillo play for LA Chivas?
Xerez , the Guat keeper , fumbles the corner from Landy, but gets away with it. He was butter fingers there.
Yeah - I think so. They mentioned earlier that Jurgen is setting the record tonight with five players in the starting eleven from the Mexican League.
Not sure. I'm not as knowledgeable about MLS Footie as I should be.
Great tackle by former Rev, Parkhurst, then Landy starts a break and trips over the ball.
I heard Arlos say shomething about Holden. Where's he tonight? Bags of energy that boy and his club would probably apprecieate it if he got a game
Decent few minutes from Castillo - I'm not hating him.
Another run down the left by Beasely and his cross is blocked.
Is Holden still with Bolton?
I haven't noticed Holden. He is a great player and it would be great to see him back in action.
He is, but had a loan spell with Not a Big Club last Spring.
Is the Gold Cup permanently hosted in the US now? Seems a bit unfair.
Nice ball from Beckerman to Gomez as his cross is cut out for a corner.
Oh - Goodson got to the corner there but Perez saved well. That shows the potential for us from set pieces.
Great save by Xerez from a Good son header off the corner and Beckerman missed the rebound.
The dirty hippie should have buried that. Too bad it wasn't someone who is more predatory
Clumsy foul by Goodson on Lopez.
Oh - Parkhurst did well to head away for a corner. Dangerous ball in there.
Parkhurst heads out the free kick for a Guat corner.
The corner is cleared.
I repeat, that huge Guat's first name is Minor? That's a laugher.
Beckerman's hair is just plain nasty
The dirty hippie is bloody clueless and useless too.
Beckerman is a regular at Jack Johnson's jam sessions, don't you think?
If he was so talented he would be a Major.
Beckerman needs to be a regular at playing decent footie.
All I know is that TDH is a soap dodger. Disgusting
Hard to believe the Championship season kicks off on August 3rd. Has it ever kicked off that early?
Landy has not really made a case for himself. Well off the pace.
Is "Minor" another way of signifying being someone's son in Latin cultures? Just thinking.
I cannot wait.
Rimando goes walkabout and lucks out that Lurch fouled him.
Nick the Wonder Midget displaying form DCU fans remember all too well.
Rimando with some stupid keeping. Way out when his defender had the situation under control and was lucky that the ref called a foul.
We are in really horrible shape if Nick is our third best keeper. Fortunately, we have Timmy and Guzan.
And where is Terrance Boyd? He'd eat up these little dudes, no?
Bob and I were observing that Jurgen didn't include European based players in the squad do to the start of preseason training.
Joe Corona wins a free kick just outside the box.
Yeah - that's a good shout - a lot of secondary players missing tonight.
Decent free kick from Landy, but headed well wide by Beckerman . Poor header.
Isn't there a Michael Johnson at LA? He's looked promising enough to me to be considered for the 3rd slot. Rimando is fundementally flawed as well as a short-arse./ And Bill Hamid is cursed at the National level.
Minor sounds like a name for a budgie.
I am not familiar with Michael Johnson. I know of Magic, but not Michael.
Yeah - Michael Johnson is a Galaxy keeper - he's played a few times for the national side. I rate him as well.
Laughable effort from distance from Marquez there.
Long range effort from Marquez high and wide for Guat,
Jurgen should give him a try since he is going with an experimental side for the Gold Cup.
The U.S. have never won in San Diego.
Who needs Neymar, Rooney or Lewandowski. You'll be happy to hear that LUFC have just recruited Ross Killock, Noel Hunt and Luke Murphy. (sigh)....
I wonder how many of those matches were against Mexico. I seem to remember that the US Fed used to schedule El Tri there to boost attendance in the bad old days before we started playing them in Columbus and Portland.
I am familiar with Noel Hunt, but don't know of the others. I don't blame you for being disappointed.
That may well have been, Gooner. I am not certain about that.
With a month to go, I was hoping for one or two major signings.
Minor Lopez is less of a Lurch than he is Peter Boyle's Monster from Young Frankenstein. I've seldom seen anything more plodding than him.
Oh - Landycakes misses a total sitter.
OH! Beckerman found Beasely down the left and his cross was volleyed about a foot wide by Landy.
Okay - that makes sense. Landycakes is one shy of 50 goals. What you want to bet that he hits his half century and then goes back to Bianca and the dogs?
DEcent effort by Landycakes there. Difficult chance that maybe an in-form version would have converted.
Nice one, Gooner. Great analogy.
GOAL! Hercules Gomez notches the US's opening goal.
GOAL! HERCULES GIVE THE U.S. THE LEAD.
GOAL! Gomez is happy that the ball evades Corona leaving Herc the easiest of tap-ins.
That's why I like the idea of Gomez as a squad player. Torres knocks a decent ball in that Corona can't reach and Gomez has made a useful run around the back post to finish easily.
1-0!
Nice cross from Torres and Gomez got behind the Guat defense to score at the far post.
Correct . Corona's miss allowed Gomez to easily finish.
Castillo picks up a decent free kick oppo for the US.
Castillo is down from a foul by Jonathan Lopez.
Did the gardener forget the grass catching attachment to the mowers?
And I for one equate that stupid Potsdam jumping about with the Mexican wave. Should. Be. Banned.
Gomez has another go from this one - well wide and high of the mark.
The free kick from Gomez is blasted halfway to Tijuana, his club side.
One minute of stoppage.
Agreed, Gooner. The jumping around should be banned.
I don't mind the Poznan - I especially liked doing it to the Citeh fans at the Emirates.
Halftime and 1-0 to the U.S. thanks to a goal by Hercules Gomez.
Agreed Bob. I'm happy that Herc scored that one and not someone else who would then be still in the frame to step up to the WCQ team. Most of these mugs must be place holders and surplus when we get back to the sharp end of things.
Well, that's half-time, then. Not terribly satisfying as a display but it's what to expect from a side that's not used to playing together.
Wahay - Stu Holden warming up.
Agreed. The Poznan is okay if directed at Citeh fans. Not a great match, but I guess Jurgen will be pleased that the U.S. have the lead. Glad that Hercules scored since he deserves to be in the squad as opposed to some of these jokers. A poor first half by Landy and he should be replaced by Holden.
U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION
GOALKEEPERS (3) : Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (8) : Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (FC Augsburg)
MIDFIELDERS (7) : Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsinborg), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde FK), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Jose Torres (Tigres)
FORWARDS (5) : Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Club Tijuana), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
Now that I look at this squad, with the exception of Holden, Jurgen picked the strongest starting 11.
Jozy possibly signing for Paolo's lot. Is up to the challenge of playing in the Prem?
Jozy's latest scoring jag has booked him a ticket to Sunderland, I see.
Dozy has to be able to force himself into Sunderland's starting XI, no? Decent move.
I have to concur. He picked the best from a weak squad other than Holden.
He has a decent chance of starting for Sunderland as Steven Fletcher is the only real goal scorer. He might partner Fletcher.
NBC broadcasting every Prem match live? How? They don't have enough channels to broadcast every match live. Some surely must be on tape delay.
I think the keeper I was thinking about is actually Sean Johnson at the Fire. LA has Cesar Robles who was in and around the squad a while ago.
I'd be interested in seeing that Philly striker McInerny have a go to see if he can make the jump. I'd like never to see Wondolowski ever again for the US. Or against DCU, he feeds on us like that brute Wil Bruin. I think Bruin's been advised to sit only in the middle of the bench so that he doesn't launch Bedoya into orbit.
The second half is underway. Holden and Diskerud on for the horrible Beckerman, and Torres
That would be quite a sight, Gonner.
I sincerely hope they just go with the Premiership feed. If I have to listen to the wisdom of Kyle Martino every weekend, I'm going to open up a vein.
Good subs. Love to see Holden in the squad. And I like what I've seen of Diskerud. I was worried that he was on Jurgen's shitlist for some reason. Injured maybe? Whatever, good to see him back
Bob will feel that Stuart Holden is misguided as he went on loan to Not a Big Club. An evil loan?
Oh - Holden with a decent pop from distance.
Agreed, Bob. Enough to go bonkers. I would hate after a long week of teaching to wake up early on a Saturday morning and have to listen to Kyle and Arlo White.
Yes. Look at Holden shooting from outside of the box.
I won't hold it against Holden.
Easy save for Perez from a volley by Hercules off a decent cross.
Very kind and generous, Bob.
I'm surprised to see Minor Lopez back on the pitch for the second half. I fully expect him to be searching for delicious BRAINS!
Gooch must be a benchwarmer at Malaga. I would be surprised if he got playing time from Pelligrini.
BOOM BOOM, Bob.
High and wide by Diskerud.
Decent effort there from Diskerud. Where does that bloke play?
I have no problem with Arlo. I think he's just fine. Kyle Martino should have the smirk beaten out of him repeatedly.
I for one will not miss Ian Bloody Darke. He started every match with a script and just banged on and on and on nitpicking little incidents that served the script, even bullying Macca to agree with him. Now he's free to eft-off and write the fiction that he so desperately worked on.
Goal kick? Surely , Landy won a corner and surely that was a handball.
Penalty to the US! Landycakes went down very easily. Seems tailor made for him to get #50.
PENALTY AS LANDY WAS PUSHED IN THE BOX.
Diskerud plays for Rosenburg but not in the first team
GOAL AND LANDY EASILY SCORES FROM THE SPOT, STRAIGHT DOWN THE CENTER.
And wouldn't you know it - it's a bloody Panenka for #50. That tells you all you need to know about the wanker. I'm surprised he didn't add a stutter step.
You've got your half ton - now bugger off!
Looking at the replay, that seemed a really soft penalty.
Well stated, Gooner.
Carlos Ruiz "still plying his trade at DC United." Any comment, Gooner?
Martino proving that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Landycake's pen was not a very good Panenka because he hit it too low. 2-0, and hopefully Jurgen doesn't swoon over Landy just for a lousy penalty conversion.
I completely agree with you regarding Kyle Martino. A really loathsome sort. I thought Ian Darke was okay without ever being brilliant. Not so sure about Arlo White, but I'm willing to give him a chance.
Also, Landy was gifted the penalty as that was a really soft call.
I'm willing to give Arlo a shot too, but please ditch Martino.
Gomez and Castillo are replaced by Shea and Bedoya.
Where's Wondo? Well, he's on as well. Not sure who he replaced.
The only good thing about the seriously crap season we've had at DC United is that we haven't suffered the additional indignity of having to see Ruiz running around in our shirt very often.
But when he does, he can't even be arsed to cheat any more. I think he must have found Jesus or something because not once has he dived or feigned injury to get someone booked.
A triple substitution for the U.S. Gooner will not be pleased that Wondo is on. Brek Shea also on.
Great long ball out from Holden there. We've really missed him.
Did he found Jesus at the Super Wal-Mart or at the convenience store?
Has Brek Shea ever played for Stoke? I haven't seen it.
The pull by Goodson on Perez was more of a pen than the one called on Landy.
I think he's come on a few times as a sub.
