Brazil v. Uruguay Live!
Let the knock-out rounds begin! The semi-finals of the Confederations Cup start today and they don't get any bigger or more historical than this one. It's 1950 redux - with the 2014 hosts trying to exorcise the ghosts of losses past. Tune in to ESPN at 3pm for full coverage and of course join me on the LOB for the chatter.

Afternoon, boys. ESPN for some reason is favoring us with live coverage of the arraignment of some thick-necked dude named Aaron Hernandez. No idea who he is or what he's done but...is this bloody Court TV or summit!?
Good afternoon,Bob. I will definitely be around for the second half, but I will still be teaching for the first half. Aaron Hernandez is a football player for the N.E. Patriots.
Still on the bloody legal coverage; however, here are the teams for today's match if they ever decide to show it:
Brazil: Julio Cesar, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo, Oscar, Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Fred, Hulk, Neymar.
Subs - Jefferson, Fernando, Lucas Moura, Hernanes, Dante, Filipe Luis, Jean.
Uruguay: Muslera, Lugano, Godin, Cacares, Pereira, Rodriguez, Arevalo, Gonzalez, Forlan, Suarez, Cavani.
Subs - Castillo, Coates, Gargano, Pereira, Eguren, Hernandez, Aguirrego.
Hiya, MUR - thanks for the info there. I really couldn't give a toss, though. No way would the Superbowl be preempted by Court TV coverage of a trial.
And we're underway at Belo Horizonte.
Marcelo fed Fred around the top of the box but he was shuffled off of it.
Early corner chance here for the Celeste.
It will be interesting to see how Sideshow gets on today. He broke his nose in the match against Italy and then was carted off in the last match.
Hello Bob. I will be around to join you at the start of the second half.School ends in about fifty minutes.
Excellent - see you then!
Suarez has the first chance to stretch his legs but Gustavo shepherded him well.
Another jittery clearance from the Brazil for a corner.
Penalty to Uruguay - a terrible pull by Sideshow on Lugano!
The Brazilian defense from nothing has gifted Uruguay with a chance to go ahead here.
Forlan to take....
Oh - what a save by Julio Cesar - sensational!
Wow - you won't see much better penalty saves than that one - Julio Cesar has saved Sideshow's blushes, but that's the problem with playing him at center back.
Cavani picks up an unnecessary yellow for holding back Neymar - the most fouled player in the tournament.
Neymar to whip this free kick in...
Headed behind by Arevalo.
Godin with a looping header there that goes over the bar.
Uruguay don't seem to be the attacking threat that they were last summer, but they're still mighty tough to beat. Very tight core.
Oh - Hulk had a half chance there but snapped at the chance. Well over the mark.
Oh - Forlan with a good turn and shot from a great cross over by Gonzalez.
Cacares has lost his boot momentarily.
Two successive short corners come to nothing for Brazil.
Oh - Marcelo did so well to get to the by-line and whipped in a great ball for Fred. Deflected high and wide.
Gustavo's follow through has left a Uruguyan in a heap. He gets a yellow in the end amidst the protestations.
Starting to get a bit chippier out there now.
GOAL! Oh - that was quite brilliant. A long ball that Neymar brought down beautifully from Gustavo. He ran into the box and flicked a shot at Muslera. Fred then flicked home a lovely finish.
1-0!
Fred is starting to look like just what Brazil needs - a no-nonsense striker who pops up in the right places to knock home goals. 8 in the last 10 matches. Making himself indispensable at the right moment.
Oh - Suarez could have leveled it immediately but missed his chance. David Luiz again looked unconvincing.
Another chance for Fred to sparkle on the right, whipping in another cross after a good run.
The ref would do well to blow up now as tempers are beginning to fray again.
Hello Bob. The students just went home for the day and there is Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen in the Beeb Studio
The players are coming out of the tunnel in a repeat of some minor match they played back in 1950
Brazil fans are really enjoying themselves at half time - and why not? That was an excellent time for Fred to score. and now Brazil are in pole position to make the Final.
The second half is underway from Beautiful Horizon.
Welcome, MUR - thanks for joining me for this second half.
They are in a great position , but still only 1-0
The Hulk was pushed in the back , but it didn't seem too severe. He made a meal of it.
Cheers Bob. Glad to join you.
More chaos in the Brazil defense and...
GOAL! Cavani strikes home the equalizer!
GOAL !!! 1-1 OFF SOME COMICAL BRAZILIAN DEFENDING AND CAVANI DOESN'T NEED A SECOND INVITATION. GREAT FINISH, BUT IT WAS A GIFT
More catastrophic defending from Sideshow kicking the ball straight into Suarez there. That kept the chance alive for Cavani.
If they are going to win the World Cup next summer, Scolari will have to sort out the back four.
What a semi. Will this go to ET?
I'm also surprised at how poor Thiago Silva has been in this tournament.
I still think Brazil have some goals in them up front. But Brazil could easily have been 1-2 down at this point, but for a sensational penalty save by Julio Cesar from Forlan that you really have to see to believe, mate.
Agreed with both statements,Bob. Really comical defending from the Side Show. Dante is a more solid defender. Also agreed about Thiago Silva. At least Big Phil has a year to ring in the changes.
Hulk goes down in the box but the ref is unimpressed. He's clearly thinking that Lou Ferrigno wouldn't have dived as easily.
I will look forward to seeing that, but Harry may not .
Raffa Benitez will be hoping to hold on to Cavani and we just saw why.
Lou Ferrigno would be mortified!
Yeah - I might go with Dante for Sideshow at center back. Gustavo has been mighty impressive as the defensive middie, otherwise Sideshow slots in there for me. Thiago Silva needs an arm round the shoulder from Scolari - or perhaps a kick up the bum.
True - that was a real Bill Bixby moment.
Forlan was chasing on to that through ball but doesn't have the pace at this point.
More comical defending but Julio Cesar clears in time.,
La Celeste really pushing the pace now - good cut and thrust to the match.
The clearance from Side Show was also a Bill Bixby moment or would it have been more appropriate for the Carol Burnett Show.
Hulk rips a free kick at goal that Muslera punches away. Why not catch it?
Perhaps an outtake from "Laugh In?"
Powerful free kick from Hulk pushed away by Muslera for a corner.More Ferrigno than Bixby.
I agree. I think Muslera thought he was playing volleyball in stead of footie.
I just chased down UWS - he'll be joining momentarily.
I think Thiago Silva should get a kick up the Bum. I would swap Dante for Side Show and leave Gustavo as the defensive middie.
Well done. we haven't heard from him in ages. What's been keeping him?
What about the Brazilian fella who played at Chelski a few years back - too old?
Afternoon boys
Working on the new house.
Probably something from Laugh In.
Afternoon, mate. How's the "Home Improvement" coming along.
Are you thinking of Alex? He's a little old and playing at PSG.
Bob is correct
Young favorite Bernard coming on now to pump up the crowd. Probably Lou Ferrigno to come off - he looks gassed.
Yeah - Alex - I'd have him in the squad, surely.
Good afternoon, UWS. I forgot about the new home. How is it ?
Hulk with a lazy overhead - probably his last moment of the day.
Ok, Just wish we could sell this one!!
Cavani with a great challenge there on Marcelo.
Cavani with a great challenge there on Marcelo.
Sorry to hear that. From past experience , I know that's easier said than done. wishing you the best
Patience, mate. The nice thing is that you don't need the cash to turn over for the new one, eh?
Oh - free header there for Suarez from the free kick.
Not quite sure where Dani Alves and Marcelo think they're playing at this point.
Oh - Fred had a good chance in the box!
Suarez should have scored from the free kick from Forlan.
Agreed but I'm spoiled. The last house sold to the the first viewers in less than 24 hours for the asking price
Who's been on top of this match?
Oh - nice interplay between Bernard, Fred and Neymar - but he should have struck it through the laces rather than trying to place it.
My screen went green for a second .Lou Ferrgino must be in the house.
A man of many houses - can we call you David "Trump?"
It's been back and forth - both teams having purple patches.
I missed the first half , but the second half seems fairly even. Uruguay missed a pen in the first half
Hernanes to come on - he hasn't impressed me much in this tournament.
Gustavo shoots straight at Muslera. Not the most likely player, but Obi Wan did last week, so anything is possible.
Oscar off - he's drifted out of the last couple of matches after a terrific opener against Japan.
Obi Wan looked like a player reborn this week - quite different from the guy at Chelski.
I thought Oscar would have a better tournament.
Agreed. He's been used as an attacking middie with Nigeria rather than the role at Chelski
Marcello booked for a foul on Forlan. I didn't see much wrong with that challenge
Well - in fairness to him, he played 68 matches at Chelski this past season - cor!
ET at the Beautiful Horizon?
sorry boys... still running around a lot
Good point, but he may be playing in the World next summer under similar circumstances.
Thiago Silva with a center back's effort at goal.
No probs UWS. I am sure you will be rather busy this summer.
ESPN FC on TV? What's that?
Don't wear yourself out, old man.
Thiago Silva would do well to have more of a center back's effort when defending
I've been wondering the same about ESPN FC.
Suarez looks off the pace a bit.
Better from Side Show as a great pass to Marcello then cut out for a corner.
Gonzalez is hobbling off now. Gargano to come on.
An injury as Gargano is about to come on.
Suarez probably off the pace due to a lengthy suspension!
Interesting - Gonzalez whispered some sweet nothings in Neymar's ear as he was walking by him.
Alvaro Gonzalez hobbles off and is replaced by Gargano
Maybe Suarez hasn't had anything good to nibble on recently. He prefers a bit of Ivanovic for tea.
Marcelo wins the umpteenth corner for Brazil. They need to make these set pieces count.
Marcelo wins the umpteenth corner for Brazil. They need to make these set pieces count.
I am not sure that it was sweet. Neymar blew some kisses back at him. Sarcasm 102!
GOAL! And they do! Paulinho looks like he's won it with a towering header!
2-1!
Could Be SPURS NEW BOY PUTS BRAZIL IN THE FINAL!!
I missed it because my link froze. I hope they replay it./ The thing I missed.
I saw the replay twice. Great leap by Paolinho, but poor marking.
Surely that puts Brazil in the final.I would love to see Brazil vs Spain in the final
Neymar earns another cheap one. Free kick to come...
And Neymar is down again wriggling about. Uruguayans not happy about it.
Soccernet have links to all the goals in this match
Is it Neymar or Neymar Jr. It says Neymar Jr. on the back of his jersey
Bernard has a touch of the Juninho Paulista about him.
Thanks UWS. I may look those up.
He seems to like Neymar Jr. for this tournament.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
Looks like Dante wants to come on for the stoppage time. Last chance saloon for Uruguay - Neymar (jr.) coming off.
A time wasting sub as Dante is on for Neymar, Jr.
Forlan whips it in and wins a corner.
UWS loves those late, time-wasting substitutions about as much as he does short corners.
Neymar, Sr. must be his dad.
Muslera is up for this last corner.
Yes. It's definitely a toss up for UWS.
Brazil have won!
I won't be around tomorrow
Visiting a college roommate at Lake George tomorrow
TTFN
That's it - Brazil are into the Confederations Cup Final.
More action tomorrow with the all-European Spain v. Italy. Any favorites in that one?
That's it as Brazil are in the final with a 2-1 win vs Uruguay. I hope they play Spain in the final
I think Spain must be the favorites.
Sorry you won't be around, UWS. Have a great time.
It was great chatting.I am on my way home to see the family. Hope to chat again tomorrow .
CHEERS!
Great chatting with you lot, too. I'll be around tomorrow.
