Let the Games Begin!
Join me this morning as we get started with a brand, spanking new Championship season. It's an early start early in August but I couldn't be more excited. This gives me three weeks to enjoy the good stuff before my semester kicks into gear. We kick off the season this morning at 7:15 am with two big sides with recent Premiership memories - Burnley v. Bolton - who will both harbor desires of returning there., despite my not picking either one for promotion. Then we have the usual slate of 3pm GMT/10 am EST kick-offs, including my beloved Leeds United at home to playoff losers Brighton. Should be a cracker - don't even think of skipping out on the LOB action this morning.

I couldn't sleep a wink beyond 6 this morning, despite a heavy week and several late nights, so excited was I to kick off the new season. Let the games begin!
I'm settled in with a cuppa and a bagel as usual, lucky LUFC shirt on.
I'm listening to the Square Ball podcast, as there is sod all preview coverage on the telly or on-line. They, like I, are underwhelmed by the business that we've done over the summer. We haven't sold off any crown jewels, mainly because we don't have any more jewels to sell. They've all gone to Norwich. In have come the trio of Noel Hunt from Reading, Matt Smith and most intriguingly Luke Murphy who scored a bagful of goals for Crewe last season.
More than ever, though, we're relying on our Academy. The list of the current squad members who have come through Thorp Arch is impressive: third string keeper Alex Cairns, Sam Byram, Chris Dawson, Ross Killock, Tom Lees, Simon Lenighan, Dominic Poleon, Charlie Taylor, Zac Taylor, Lewis Turner and Aidy White.
Right, then - I've got a good, clean link for the early one here: http://firstrowus.eu/watch/198805/1/watch-burnley-fc-vs-bolton-wanderers.html
And we're away at Turf Moor!
The teams on display this morning:
Burnley - Heaton, Trippier, Lafferty, Marney, Long, Shackell, Wallace, Jones, Ings, Vokes, Stanislaus.
Bolton - Bogdanovic, Baptiste, Tierney, Andrews, Knight, Wheaton, Yong-Lee, Pratley, Beckford (sniff), Eagles, Medo.
Burnley have made the early running here but Bolton have the first real chance from a free kick.
Eagles takes...straight into the wall.
Very sad to see that Jermaine Beckford has washed up at Bolton, after having failed at Everton, then Leicester and then shopped by lowly Huddersfield after keeping them up with his goals at the end of last season.
Oh - Vokes had a chance from Stanislau's cross. Bundled out by the Bolton defense.
This looks destined to be a draw - too strong sides who will likely survive but not challenge for promotion, in my humble opinion.
Bolton have a striker named "Medo," but it's not the Egyptian "Mido" who was at Spurs a season or two back.
Half way through the first half and the picture really hasn't changed. Very few chances in this tight match.
GOAL! First goal fo the season goes to Burnley and Danny Ings!
Sam Vokes did well to nod the long ball on and Danny Ings did the rest, roasting David Wheater and then whipping the ball back across the keeper into the right corner.
1-0!
Good tempo to the match now as Bolton look for the equalizer.
GOAL! Darren Pratley equalizes for Bolton!
Nice interchange there between Pratley who spread the ball to Eagles and then received his ball back in and hammered it by Heaton.
1-1!
Both sides seem to be satisfied with 1-1 going into the half-time interval, just dinking it about a bit. Some changes to come for sure in the second half.
We're back on at Turf Moor for the second half. I see that the Burnley goal has been credited to David Wheater, who's boot deflected the shot from Ings. That seems a bit unfair on the man. No changes to either side yet.
Oh - Stanislaus' free kick nearly fools the Bolton keeper Bogdan.
An hour in and both managers must be contemplating some changes at this point. It's got a bit stale out there.
Right on cue, David Ngog is replacing the injured Chris Eagles. How far his star has fallen since his days at Anfield.
Stanislaus lets rip as the corner comes free to him at the top of the box. Only troubles the bloke selling chestnuts at the top of the stand.
A water break as David Wheater is down getting some treatment.
The home side is pouring on the pressure now, with lots of corners earned.
JB looks like for a penalty for a slight push from Trippier. Nothing doing from Clattenburg.
Oh - David Wheater had a chance to redeem himself for the o.g. but completely miscued his chance from the corner.
The home crowd starting to get a wee bit restless. They came looking for a win today and now are looking at a home draw to start the season.
Scott Arfield comes on for his Burnley debut replacing the busy Stanislaus.
And the hapless JB comes off to tepid applause from the away crowd. Craig Davies replaces him.
So a little under ten minutes for either side to break the deadlock and start the new season with a win.
Heaton makes a sharp save from sub Davies shot. Probably the most work he's done all day.
Don't to five minutes now...
Free kick to Bolton just outside the box.
Cleared out easily. Medo with a shot back in.
Ross Wallace wins a soft one for Burnley. Big moment in the match now.
Dougie Friedman won't be happy if this one flies in now.
Wallace wastes it high into the stand. Rubbish.
Goalscorer Ings gets a late rest, replaced by Rob Hall.
Yong-Lee gets the first yellow on the stroke of the 90th minute.
Four minutes of stoppage time to come now. This one has felt like a draw even before the first half goals went in. Very evenly matched sides.
90 seconds left and Burnley have a throw deep in the Bolton half.
And that's it - honor's even in the opening match of the season. Bolton have a lot of fanciers among the PPP crowd but they'll have to do better than that to earn promotion.
I'm off for a kip on the magic couch before the big one starts up at the top of the hour.
Great to hear the dulcet tones of Jeff Stelling again. Here's the link for Soccer Saturday:
http://firstrowus.eu/watch/198816/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
Morning Bob. Hope you had a good kip on the couch
I have just gotten up!! A big sleep-in for me!
I have link for Soccer Saturday going strong
http://firstrowus.eu/watch/198816/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
30,000 fans expected at Elland Road
The panel say they are one of the biggest club in the country let alone the Championship
Morning, UWS - how are you? DId you call your sister?
Noel Hunt to partner Luke Varney up front. Luke Murphy also to get his debut today. A new look Leeds United!
Ten minutes to go!
Why do I have to call my sister?
Fantastic video just sent by John!!!
Just took a look at the brilliant NBC Sports ad for the Premiership coverage with former SNL star Jason Sudeikis. Great stuff!
I was on Facebook with Debs this morning and she said to say "hi" and that she'd love to hear from you now and again. Call your sister!
Mere minutes away from the new season - MOT!
Here we go with Leeds United!
Rich coming from her... she's useless getting in touch with me... not even emails!
Best of luck this season Dr Dahlgren... promotion awaits?
The Leeds side today:
Paddy Kenny, Lee Peltier, Stephen Warnock, Paul Green, Tom Lees, Jason Pearce, Luke Murphy, Michael Tonge, Luke Varney, Noel Hunt, Ross McCormack.
Subs - Adam Drury, Jamie Ashdown, Aidan White, Michael Brown, David Norris, Dominic Poleon.
'Place is rocking"
But Seagulls on top
Off to Elland Road....
"Absolutely rocking!"
So we traded Luciano Becchio for Steve Morison last January. Becchio's been on the bench ever since. And we've just loaned out Steve Morison to Millwall. What a nonsense!
I dont' get it either
Plenty of goals in the lower leagues - not a sausage in the Championship yet.
Forfar take the the lead against Rangers
Bugger All
Are you at all disappointed with their performance ?
Plenty of goals at Gresty Road... already Crewe 2 Rotherham 1
Not at all - as I've always said, "Climb every mountain," etc, etc.
Jeff is on a rant already!!!
OH DEAR!!
BUGGGGGGGGGERRRRRR!
Brighton in front. The home crowd silenced.
Come on, you Whites - MOT!
Watford take the lead at St. Andrews
Coventry are losing at Crawley... i feel bad for them. Already down 10 points and also have to play all their 'home' games in Northampton
Bottom of the table!
The Tractor Boys take the lead at Reading
The Tractor Boys have taken the lead at Boro.
Plymouth losing at Southend
Great line from the NBC video
How many countries are in this country?
Blackpool are 0-1 up at Doncaster, one of my favorites for relegation.
LOL!
Argyle will no doubt struggle again this season.
Bugger! Not a Big Club have scored at QPR.
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're back in it!
Ross off to another big scoring season!
WELL DONE
LEEDS EQUALIZE!
Ross Mac
Ashes Update
England 2-0
3rd Test
Aussies 527-7 dec
England 196-4
Still need 131 to avoid the follow on.. if England don't lose this test, they will retain the Ashes. They will be two up with two to play
Jeff says that Ross was our "leading scorer" last season. What a load of rubbish - Becchio had 19 for us before he was shopped to Norwich in January.
Leeds now up to 4th - what a roller coaster!
You and I should both be on Soccer Saturday...we'd be brilliant.. and very knowledgeable
Coventry now two down
Indeed - we'd be better than the B team they've got on today.
New Old Boys Newport County... take the lead against "who are they? Exactly!"
Yes! Pompey are playing up - 1-0.
YES.. POMPEY TAKE THE LEAD against Oxford
Big crowd in the lowest division
I'd take this table at the end of the season. Blackpool are champions, Ipswich go up second and we've got a big, big playoff match against Not a Big Club.
Good morning BD and UWS. Just got back from dropping off the pets for boarding.
Bournemouth have taken the lead against Charlton through Grabban.
Morning, MUR - how are you, mate?
I will be around for the remainder of the first half. I am watching a really evil encounter on BEIN as Not a Big Club lead 0-1 at Evil QPR
Bloody hell - a small pitch invasion by Coventry fans has delayed the match. It goes from bad to worse for them!
Great . How are you? Thanks for asking.
Not sure who I want to win that one - perhaps QPR?
Junior Hoilett volleyed over unmarked in the six yard box off a cross from Joey Barton.
I would like both teams to lose.
John Salako says Brighton are "still the better side." Yet, Luke Murphy has had a couple of half chances. I'm hoping for lots of goals from the kid.
Morning MUR
Did you watch the John video? Brilliant!
I am off for walkies right now
I'll be back
It is 1-1 at ER. I am interested to see how Brighton fare as I picked them to win the Championship.
I've just realized that Spitty hasn't made the starting XI or the bench today - is he for the off? Or merely injured?
Of course, I can listen to SS on the iPhone
Good morning , UWS. I am not sure what video you are referring to?
John Salako has been saying that they're the better side, playing lots of silky football.
Chris Kirkland with a great close range save from Faurlin. It's all QPR.
Yes - but you can't contribute to the LOB while on the walkies. Send the kids out with Shadow, you big numpty!
Salako is correct. Great football from QPR, but they did that last season, then never could score and made lots of mistakes at the back.
Middlesbrough take the lead vs the Foxes and Not a Big Club nearly scored on the break. That's what I was talking about.\
Jack Makoma comes on for a debut for Not Big Club. Scored 18 for Burton Albion last season. Joe Maddock off injured.
Mikael Antonio goes down in the box off a tackle from Armand Traore. Looked like the two players got caught in a tangle
I heard that UWS will type with one hand and hold the leash with the other hand. A real footie junkie?
QPR win a corner as a cross intended for Andy Johnson was cut OUT and
GOAL!! NEDEM ONUHA HAS A CROSS FROM JUNIOR HOILETT ACCIDENTALLY DEFELCT OFF HIS FOOT FOR AN EQUALIZER.
Not a Big Club are incensed. They've had a penalty appeal turned down and then Rangers have gone down and equalized. Was it a decent should for a pen?
Everyone's favorite for promotion Wigan are off to a good start, 0-1 up at Barnsley.
It's 1-1 at Loftus Road. The corner was taken short to Hoilett and his cross bounced off Onuha's foot for an equalizer.
And now QPR are 2-1 up! Yes!
GOAL!!! 2-1 QPR CHRIS KIRKLAND MADE A SUPERB SAVE FROM JOEY BARTON AND ANDY JOHNSON PUTS AWAY THE REBOUND ON HIS DEBUT.
Reading are level with Ipswich just before half-time.
Poor defending as a cross was headed out to Barton who volleyed at Kirkland from close range and Johnson volleyed in the rebound.
Oxford United lead 1-2 at Pompey. Four minutes of stoppage time at Loftus Road.
Not a Big club running out of ideas meaning that ....
They are not a big club.
The Sunday game tomorrow is Derby County vs Blackburn. Bob will be licking his chops at that match.
I couldn't agree with you more, mate.
Wally in A Brolly is now first team coach at QPR. He and Harry are a motley crew.
Leeds and Brighton are level at half-time. I have to admit that I'd be really satisfied with a draw today.
Halftime and QPR lead 2-1.
That would be a fantastic result. Next Sunday a trip to the Crisps which may be on BEIN as the Sunday match.
All they need now is The Turnip or Dirty Old Man Pleat down at Loftus Road to complete the full set.
UWS will not be pleased that Pompey trail 1-2 vs Oxford United. That's what he gets for going walkies.
The deadly duo is plenty for us to handle, but thanks for the offer.
I am sorry to do this , but we are about to leave to the Alamo City. Sorry I could only be around for a few minutes. Perhaps we can chat on Wednesday when Leeds play in the Capital One Cup or during some International Champions Cup action.
Cheers mate! I hope Leeds defeat Brighton even though they are my pick to win the title. There are 44remaining matches to win.
I am back from walkies and things went south on the south coast!
Yeah - sorry about that. Could be a roller coaster of a season at Fratton Park.
Our League Cup opponents on Wednesday, Chesterfield, are 1-0 up over Bury.
Wigan two up... could they come straight back?
Forest take the lead at home to Huddersfield
Yeovil are in the second tier!!!
Welsh football on a big high
New boys Newport are three up back in the league
Yeah - they got promotion last season. If we were picking relegation favorites from the Champions, they'd be on it along with Donny and perhaps Boro.
More evidence that the Welsh national side should really be better than they are.
Your sis is in London today, btw. Her new guy Paul seems like a nice bloke.
I haven't really had much on him... didn't really know his name... it was always 'my bf"
She never keeps me in the loop
Now Pompey are down to ten men
Bugger... Bell is out at Old Trafford... 225 for 5... still need 100 runs to avoid the follow on
Now Pompey are 3-1 down
Back to Elland Road....
Great save, Paddy Kenny!
You could be his Facebook friend...if you were on FB!
Definitely will be satisfied with a home draw today, given the SS reports from Elland Road.
Leicester have turned it around in the second half. They're 1-2 up at Boro now.
One of my promotion picks
All my picks are winning!!
Donny have equalized against promotion favorites Blackpool. 1-1 there.
Mine too.
We're down to 8th now - I'll take that. Hang in there, lads.
You are playing at home!!!
Jeff is losing it with the Vidiprinter - he's livid!
Jeff berates the teleprinter... and it's back
Yeah - but we've been under the cosh from the off!
Reading come all the way back and now leads Ipswich
Wigan are 0-2 up and playing against 10 men Barnsley now.
Dominic Poleon has come on and is "making things happen." Come on, you Whites!
some young bloke comes on for Leeds and is lighting up the place
33,400!!
Coventry get a goal back at Crawley
Can only be around 15 minutes left - come on!
Rangers tie it up
BUGGER
1-4 Pompey
they could be BOTTOM of the football league!
Marvelous effort from the Elland Road faithful!
Wigan are three up
They are destined for non-league football, don't you think?
They're one of my promotion picks.
Them and Accrington are -3 and one goal scored... Pompey bottom alphabetically
Your son has just liked my photo on Facebook. You could see it too...if you were on FB!
Pompey were favorites to go up!
They JUST won the FA CUP!!!
He's still in bed!!
NOT JOINING BOOK FACE
Wigan four nil up
All of my picks are in the top three - Watford, Wigan, Leicester. Mega points for the Blue Devil. I want that Shield back!
NOPE.. it is still 3-0.. teleprinter didn't get the memo the season started this week!
Do you know where your family is? I do - I'm on Facebook. ;-)
Coventry tie it up... it's Desmond at Crawley
SS are having a shocker today. Working out the kinks in the system before the Premiership season starts?
Teleprinter gives Queen of the South two goals for every time they hit the net
Desmond didn't stay long... Crawley back in front
Come on, you Whites!
Two Yorkshire clubs at the bottom of the table!
Let's start the season off right
IT IS LEEDS TIME!!!
More misery for Yorkshire. Blackpool have won it late on at the Keepmoat.
Hang in there, Leeds!
Cheers, mate!
Every game has a goal in the Championship as YEOVIL take the lead at the Den... lovely
Yeovil have scored their first goal in the second division!
Kevin Pietersen just hit his century for England... still way behind the Aussies though
Wigan do score a fourth!!
They play United at Wembley next week.. I'm nervous
Oh - great save, Paddy Kenny!
Struth... Brighton almost score as SS go to ER
4 added minutes
RIght - Charity Shield, eh?
That's what I'm talking about. Just hoping to hang on for a draw.
