Relegation Saturday
The Grim Reaper beckons for many of the sides playing in today's holiday Saturday fixtures, with only Citeh and United from the top half playing. We start with second-bottom West Ham against manager-less West Brom. How long will the Hammers board stick with unpopular Fat Sam? A thumping by the Baggies today might be the final straw.
102 Comments:
The big news out of Blighty is that Malky Mackay has been sacked as Cardiff manager. United legend Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is favorite to replace him. It means that Fat Sam is the only manager in the bottom six still in his job.
The team news out of Upton Park this morning.
West Ham: Jaaskelainen; O'Brien, Tomkins, McCartney, Rat; Noble, Diame, Nolan; Joe Cole, Can't Control, Jarvis. Subs: Adrian, Collison, Maiga, Taylor, Diarra, Demel, Chambers.
West Brom: Foster; Jones, Olsson, McAuley, Lugano, Ridgewell; Morrison, Brunt, Mulumbu; Berahino, Anelka. Subs: Myhill, Yacob, Amalfitano, Sinclair, Sessegnon, Vydra, Dawson.
Referee: Mike Dean.
West Ham start second bottom on 14 points from 18 matches. West Brom are only three points better in 15th. A win for the Hammers today would be a real tonic.
Teams in the tunnel while the Clash's immortal "London Calling" is blasting over the tannoy.
A cheery handshake between West Ham's skipper Kevin Nolan and West Brom new boy Nik Anelka. Yes - Le Sulk is back in the Premiership!
Getting set for kick-off now. Fat Sam got a lukewarm reception coming out.
And we're underway at Upton Park. Let's hope it's a cracker with lots of goals to wake me up.
West Ham seem a bit sluggish after all of that grafting against Arsenal on Boxing Day. The Baggies have come out a bit more lively.
GOAL! The dream start for the Hammers - Joe Cole steps up to finish off a Route One chance with an excellent near-post finish.
So, West Ham are immediately lifted out of the danger zone to 16th and Palace drops back in.
How will Downing's Baggies respond to that early set-back.
Tomkins has picked up a knock. They're already missing Collins, so this would be a major problem.
A big appeal for handball against Ridgewell after that Nolan blast. Nothing doing from Mike Dean.
There's a nice craic to this match now.
The camera finds Andy Carroll, who has yet to kick a ball for the Hammers this season.
Half chance there for Carlton Cole who pops his header over the bar.
Half way through the first half and we're still separated by that Joe Cole goal.
Oh - a big scramble in the West Brom box. But somehow Guy Demel can poke it home.
It's clear that the LOB faithful has opted for more sleep over a bottom of the table scrap this morning.
GOAL! Le Sulk comes good, latching on to a pass from Brunt and bundling it home from close range.
1-1!
GOAL! It's Anelka again! A scrappier goal you won't see this weekend. Carlton Cole makes a complete hash of a clearance and Anelka pokes home from two yards.
1-2!
West Brom now up to 12th and West Ham back down in the doldrums.
Half time arrives and the fans predictably give the home side a hard reception. Off for a shower.
Good morning Bob. I was getting a wee extra kip and see that the Hammers are in big trouble. Fat Sam next to get the sack?
Maiga, who has not scored in eighteen appearances came on for Carlton Cole, Sure why Not?
Ringng back the years for the Baggies a sAnelka missed a great change and that Ancient one Diego Lugano center of the Baggies defense.
The Rat straight at Foster.
Jarvis fouled by Mulumbu in the D as a free kick from Noble was headed away
OH! it was taken short and not far wide by Joe Cole.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board. I'm back from a refreshing shower to see Joe Cole blast a free kick well over.
Lots of chatter on Five Live about unfair it was for Vincent Tan to sack Malky Mackay. I don't buy that. Cardiff were on the slide and the results caught up with Malky. End of story.
Kevin Nolan booked for a foul from behind on Chris Brunt.
I agree. It's another case where an owner has too much money, but no idea on how to run a football club.
Looking at the other fixtures today, Villa and Swansea are both mid-table - it's fairly meaningless. Fulham need to get something out of their trip to Villa - at least a point. Citeh will murder Palace who will no doubt end up in the bottom three by tonight. United will expect to get a win at Carrow Road. And we end with the late match - a fascinating encounter between managerless Cardiff and bottom of the table Sunderland.
You are correct that it is relegation Saturday . If Sunderland win at Cardiff then Fat Sam could be eating his porridge with a wooden spoon.
BOOM BOOM!
Citeh will go top with a win vs Palace.
That may be the case, MUR, however, would Cardiff be in the Premiership without the Tan money? So, fans have a choice between a more pure Bluebirds in the Championship (or dare I say, in L1) or a compromised Red Bluebirds side with Tan in charge and a rotating cast of characters in the Premiership.
According to that theory, why is Fat Sam still in a job? He should have been sacked weeks ago. What does WHR think about this?
I'd like to see a YouTube video of Fat Sam eating porridge with a wooden spoon, MUR - boom boom!
Good point, MUR - I think WHR and most other fans would love to see the back of Fat Sam right about now.
That is true, but will he get a better manager than Malcolm?
Maiga with a decent pop at goal and Foster did well to tip around.
Better from the Hammers as Foster superbly tipped an effort from Maiga around the post.
Apparently the deal has already been done to bring Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in next month. What do you think of that?
GOAL! Maiga equalizes for the Hammers and Foster will want that one back.
Desmond at the Boleyn Ground!
GOAL !!! DESMOND AT UPTON PARK AS NOLAN WENT PAST DIEGO LUGANO AND MAIGA SCORES WITH AGREAT STRIKE, BUT FOSTER SHOULD HAVE SAVED IT.
GOAL! The Hammers pour on the pressure and Nolan bundles one in at the back post!
3-2 Hammers!
GOAL !!! 3-2 HAMMERS AS THE HAMMERS WON MULTIPLE HEADERS IN THE BOX AND NOLAN HOOKS IT HOME FROM CLOSE RANGE. TWO GOALS IN ABOUT TWO MINUTES.
Somewhere in Georgetown, WHR's coffee just got spit up and the plate of waffles went flying!
MacAuley on for the ancient Diego Lugano, who looks past it.
GOAL! Oh, my word! It's 3-3!!!!!
Sorry , it was Amalfitano and
GOAL !!! 3-3 ASSIADO BERAHINO SCORES WITH A GREAT FINISH OFF THE POST TO MAKE IT 3-3
I am sure WHR is now throwing plates if he wasn't before. Hammers in the drop zone.
The Hammers were out of the drop zone when they went ahead. Now back in the drop zone. Fine margins.
I never had a chance to answer your question amidst the flurry of goals. OGS will be an interesting appointement , but a risk due to no Prem experience as a manager
Now the Baggies have a free kick chance with Brunt over it. No - Morrison blasts into the wall.
Diame fouls Berahiono and into the wall by Jim Morrison. That looked a free kick from a Doors member rather than a Prem player
True - although I do think that Ole had charge of United's youth side.
Is it true that Fat Sam signed Rat because he was thinking of an excellent meal?
No doubt, MUR - no doubt. Fat Sam likes a slice of Rat Tart.
It's not the same as that has been tried in the past and fails more often than not, but I hope OGS does really well.
It's not the same as that has been tried in the past and fails more often than not, but I hope OGS does really well.
This is a really open match, considering it's a relegation six pointer
Oh - Brunt nipped in before Diame but Jussi saved well.
I am sure Johnno will be keeping a keen eye on the results later today.
It's definitely been better than a strong cup of coffee for getting me going this morning.
Claudio Yacoub on for Jim Morrison. This caretaker manager not a fan of the doors?
well stated Bob. I would have been up earlier if I had known this would be a good match
Apparently, the caretaker has said to Morrison:
"This is the end, my only friend, the end."
And then he's given him a pat and told him to sit his arse on the bench.
Did you see that Forest defeated QPR late on Boxing day? That moved Forest up to fifth. The whites at Forest tomorrow as it's 5th vs 6th?
I know - I almost skipped it but Dragon woke me up early for his brekkies.
Yeah - that's a big one for us.
Nice one, Bob. Great on your Doors trivia.
Diame is having a 'mare today, and now he's given away a free kick on the edge of the box.
Oh - what an effort from Berahino! Off the post! Jussi didn't move!
Stupid foul by Diame on Brunt just outside the box as the corner was not cleared and off the bar by Berahino.
Oh - what a rubbish cross from Joey Cole.
A superb curling free kick and the Hammers lucky not to be trailing.
Still a little over five minutes left for a winner.
Jack Collison on for Joe Cole and now there are no Coles. Jussi rushed out to gather from the on rushing Amalfitano.
The Citeh v. Palace slaughter is coming up next on NBC Sports Network. SHold be another goal-fest.
Sparky and Fred wake me up in the mornings too.
Le Sulk is still on a hat-trick.
Sess on for Berahino
I'm off after the final whistle to join my dad for the later matches.
Would that be his first holiday Prem hat-trick?
I will be off to a Bar Mitzvah at halftime of Citeh vs Palace.
oH! How did Kevin Nolan miss that ? A free header in the six yard box and headed well over.
I've got another cracking trivia question from Five Live that I'll be posting on the LOB on Monday.
The Gunners have a tricky one away to the Toon , so Citeh may be top heading into New Years Day
Bit of banter between Nolan and Yacub.
I will be looking forward to it. Do you have the answers to the last question?
That could well be the case - Pool v. Chelski should be interesting tomorrow.
I do - should I post them now?
Four minutes of stoppage time as Liam Ridgewell picks up a cheap yellow.
I think so as I don't think I will guess them. Great question.
Also Toffees vs Saints.
Four minutes of stoppage time to come.
A thriller at Upton Park finishes 3-3 , but the draw really doesn't help either team.
The final whistle goes and it's a result that doesn't really do much for either side. Fat Sam and the Hammers remain in the relegation zone and WBA are still perilously close to the dropzone. I'm off to Dad's - enjoy the rest of the day!
Cheers mate. Hope to join you tomorrow.
