Another One Bites the Dust?
Greetings from snow-bound WNY, chaps! It's a perfect afternoon to sit back with a beer or two and some snacks and watch the Champions League. Arsenal became the first English club put to the sword yesterday. Citeh are likely to face the same fate today, as they travel to Catalonia with a two-goal deficit to claw back at the Camp Nou. PSG are 4-0 up from their first leg against Leverkusen so they're also likely to join Atletico and Bayern from yesterday's fixtures. Join me for all the action this afternoon, won't you?
274 Comments:
As with Arsenal yesterday, the only way that Citeh have any chance this afternoon is if they take the match to Barca. So Pellegrini needs to put out an attacking formation.
Here's the way that the teams will line up:
Barca - Valdes, Alves, Pique, Masch, Alba, Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, Messi, Fab, Neymar. Subs: Pinto, Pedro, Sanchez, Bartra, Song, Adriano, Roberto.
Citeh - Hart, Zabs, Kompany, Lescott, Kolarov, Silva, Fernandinho, Milner, Nasri, Yaya, Aguero. Subs: Pants, Negredo, Dzeko, Garcia, Navas, Clichy, Boyata.
Afternoon Bob
I can't believe you're getting all the snow
We are missing most of it. Only 3-6 inches and rain
19:08:

Beat me to it
A lot of negativity around Barca because they lost at the weekend!
Citeh lost to Wigan!
I reckon that Citeh are beaten before they've started. What's the point of having Negredo and Dzeko on the bench when you need goals? Instead he's gone with three defensive minded middies in Yaya, Fernandinho and Milner with only Aguero up front. Ridiculous.
Good afternoon. It sounds like Pelligrini has thrown in the towel. At least he dropped De Michelis.
There are some Champions ship matches and the Blades have a League One fixture due to cup action last weekend.
They have a shot
Afternoon MUR
We had rain Monday evening and early Sunday morning. Sunny Breezy and 70 here today. Rather pleasant.
The Demichelis suspension is a big blow...for Barcelona.
Shut it MUR… about the weather
Hello UWS. They need goals and have a really defensive minded lineup. Sounds like Pelligrini is opting for damage limitation.
It wasn't in the first leg nor to Wigan. I hope he starts on the 25th.
Will anyone be around for EL action tomorrow. Spurs host my pick to win the EL, Benfica, at 4:05.
Afternoon, mate - I'll send you some of our snow. How about that?
Afternoon, MUR! Great to have you back on-line. Your missus told me all about your adventures.
Battle of the Backsides at Wembley
Savage taking on Shearer to be the first to sit in 45,000 seats at Wembley
Each of them sitting in half of the stadium
Savage
Seats today 8,722
Total 29,441
65.42% completed
Shearer
Seats today 9,020
Total 29,738
66.8% completed
Nice one about DiMichaelis - boom boom!
I would not want to deprive you. It's been rather pleasant the past couple of days.
I won't be around tomorrow
I am going down to Long Island to a friend's mother's wake
A weird contest between Shearer and Savage. A squeaky bum contest?
My money's on Shearer's backside in that one.
Really tired of the Heinekin drummer. Is that really any way to sell beer?
Sorry to hear that. Our condolences to your friend.
Talk about overkill. He needs to retire.
The missus tells all. I don't recall having too any adventures this Spring Break.
Burnley will try and extend their lead in the promotion spot visiting St. Andrew's where City haven't won since… who knows when!
Bburn play Bournemouth
Bottom of the table Charlton host Hudds
and FA Cup Holders and semi finalist take on a big club
It's all for Charity
Sport Relief is coming up
David Beckhaam made a skit with Only Fools and Horses… can't wait for that
The Evil Blades host Carlisle United in a makeup match from the lofty heights of 11th place.
I might be around tomorrow - it depends on the weather. Campus is closed today and may be tomorrow. It's positively Biblical out there right now. We're supposed to get 18-24" before it's all done.
Sounds tailor made for Becks.
Blades have won 10 straight!
Woy is in the stands
WOW! That's quite a bit for March. Sunny and around 70 today and tomorrow in our area.
Citeh were knocked off their loft "Perch" on Sunday.
A great run by the new Young Cloughie.
Any thoughts about the Pellegrini line-up today? I think it's a shocker!
Barca fans waiving their flags. Are the travelling fans waving white flags?
Who's Woy looking at? Hart? Lescott? Milner?
Teams coming out
I always like both teams wearing their normal kits
I reckon that Pellegrini is waving the white flag. Are there any Citeh fans in attendance?
It sounds like he's waiving the white flag, going for damage limitation. The Di Michelis suspension should plug any gaps in the back four.
I have a soft spot for this stadium… especially the goal to our left!!
Woy may want an excuse to watch a CL match. It should be Milner and Lescott. Hart has already booked his ticket for Brazil.
As Prince sang 1999.
That's what I would have thought - all three are probably in the squad, no?
I have a link going for SS again
They show the league goals as they go in
Bob wasn't too happy about what he saw last night
You lot are still partying like it's 1999, aren't you?
Not at all happy with last night's performance. It must have confirmed that Brian is gone.
Warren says the three Citeh players on a yellow need to be careful. Is he worried they'll be suspended for the quarters?
They're off from the venue of the '99 final.
And we're underway. A big task for Citeh tonight. Come on, you Sky Blues!
Nine goals in two matches at ER should seal his fate or at least get him on the skewer Hawaaian style.
Shoot Silva
Pathetic cross from Yaya.
Is Pell on the bench for Citeh.. no.. in the stadiums after his reaction about the last match
COME ON YOU WHITES!
They need to take those chances.
Rangers take the lead vs Airdrie United.
Pelligrini banned for three matches, but the third may not take effect.
Lescott gets a break from the ref
Rangers will clinch promotion to the Scottish Championship with a victory tonight.
He was a lucky boy.
They'll clinch the championship
Bayer have taken the lead… fightback underway
Looked like Citeh got away with a trip on Iniesta as Yaya cheaply conceded possession on his return to the Nou Camp.
What did you make of the 7 match ban for Alan Pardew for the head-butt?
Correct about Rangers . They will clinch the Championship on their way to the Championship. Bayer need three more goals to relieve their headache.
Messi goes down cheaply but nothing doing.
That is pretty much what I expected.
Nice pun about Bayer, mate.
Cheers Bob.
Neymar goes down under an elbow from Kolarov.
That Lescott challenge looks worse and worse the more they show it from different angles.
It says 0-0 from Paris in the 12th minute on my link.
Citeh can't get out of their own half.
Citeh can't even get the ball back. How do they expect to score?
PSG have now tied it up and are 5-1 up on agg. That tie is settled.
Pardew is a nutter… literally!!
They haven't got enough outlets up front for the ballwinners to find.
Messi dances through again and Hart is bailed out by Kompany on the line.
A scare for Citeh as messi rounded Hart who got a hand on it, but it stayed in play and Citeh scrambled clear.
Yeah - that tie was settled before kick-off. This one too.
How many players is there on the pitch that Woy is watching
Milner? Lescott?
Looked a definite pen by Lescott on Messi . Citeh got away with one there.
Down to 14th now in the Championship with Hudders drawing so far. We're now 11 points off the playoffs and 13 points off relegation.
Sidney Sam with the Bayer goal and Marquinhos for PSG.
Just Hart, Lescott and Milner.
I expect Leeds to finish mid table, with or without Brian.
Typical English shooting… useless by Milner
I agree - mid-table obscurity, probably with Gianluca Festa on board with the new owner.
I'm not sire what Woy expect to learn from this match other than the fact that England will be the underdog in two matches as Citeh are in this one.
Will that be an improvement for Leeds?
Is Milner in your squad? He's the kind of Swiss Army knife kind of player that England managers tend to like to bring along. I could imagine him starting in Manaus against Italy.
I don't know enough about this new owner or Festa for that matter. New owner seems shady.
Citeh sliced apart as Neymar has a goal disallowed for offside . It should have counted as Messi was on and Neymar was on when the pass was played by Messi. Citeh really fortunate this evening.
Barca have it in the goal but it's ruled out for offside. The ref is being really kind to Citeh.
Ball in the net… offside
Neymar knocks it in but called offside
The bloke that got the ball wasn't offside BUT the two in the middle were but NOW DAYS that doesn't matter
It should! The two in the middle had an unfair advantage being closer to the goal for the cross to come over
Sorry to hear that. Leeds deserve better. They need to do justice to the blankie.
England will sweat like pigs in the tropical rainforest of Manaus.
I really think that should be offside.
How are the other two not interfering when they score
Rangers two up from the spot…second spot kick of the night
Pathetic by Silva and Kompany lucky not to be booked.
That's a good slogan, MUR - Justice for the LUFC Blankie!
Naughty by Kolorov on Neymar, Jr. Kolorov booked as the ref finally lost patience and will miss the next match in August or September.
Not a good pass by Yaya
This match is going nowhere for Citeh. They need more firepower up front. I can see Barca running out 2 or 3-0 winners.
Ta, Bob. I think Elizabeth would agree. It's your new profile picture?
Martin Tyler thinks that Citeh "are giving this a right go." I disagree. They ran the white flag up from the off. They should already be 2-0 down from the Lescott penalty and the "offside" ruled goal.
Neymar was a ball hog.
I really dislike watching Barca… I don't like the way they play!
They get so much love but I think they're penalty
That it is - it's my cozy winter look. I'll have another one for when the weather turns. Perhaps a biking action shot?
Bayer have a pen…. saved
I agree with you, UWS - I really hate the tiki taka style. Really boring to watch.
Melanie and I watched the Cosmos special on Sunday.
I was mistaken earlier… The Blades are going for their 10th straight win
Why are they so loved
I agree too. Barca are boring.
Shame - Bayer at least are giving it a go. Hopeless for them. Not many competitive fixtures in this year's CL knockout round.
A waste by Citeh as a foul is called on a rare set piece opportunity.
I think they appeal to intellectual Guardian-reading types. Not that I don't love the Guardian for its political and international coverage. But they're footer writers are usually wrong about things.
The Blades are on their way to number ten as they take the lead vs Carlisle United.
Sheff United have take the lead against Carlisle
Goal in the Second City
Burnley take the lead at St. Andrews
Zaba booked for a foul on Iniesta . Why is he complaining?
Zabs has a yellow and is out of the quarter final they won't be playing in anyway.
Burnley extending the gap between second and third in the Second City.
Lescott goes clattering in again - this time on Neymar. Rather agricultural but got some ball and plenty of Brazilian as well.
I think Barca appeal to the possession types who see them as not a Tony Pulis side.
I don't like teams trying to play their way.. BLOODY BORING
If he does that this summer then he will get plenty of Brazilian turf and Brazilian showers. They will call him a Brazil nut.
I agree. They are going to the other extreme.
A penalty for a Big Club at the DW
Def penalty… ref gives a yellow to the keeper
It should be a red by a rule but again… a pen is not taking away a goal scoring opportunity
Looks like Chelsea will be the only Prem team in the quarters.
I reckon that the Barca fans have forgotten that football is an entertainment. When they get a free kick or corner they just put it back into play!
I love they are showing the goals from the domestic stuff
Wish they would do it on Saturdays
Maybe
I agree. It shouldn't be a red for conceding a pen as the foul gave a scoring opportunity, it did not deny it.
SHOOT!!!
Silva does.. FINALLY… USELESS
High and wide by Silva as Citeh finally put together a good passing sequence.
Wednesday finally take their pen… saved
Did Not a Big Club score from the spot?
That answered my question. Wednesday have yet to score this Wednesday.
Wahay!
Four pens so far tonight… only two have been scored… both by Rangers
Into the side netting by Neymar as Kolorov slipped . Nice long ball from Messi as that should have been the lead.
No shots on target for either team at the Nou Camp… we're watching the wrong match!
Neymar fails to hit the target again… I guess it was saved. Corner… bloody short one
Lost my stream temporarily.
Hart saves from Xavi from close range off the short corner. Nice pass from Messi.
Don't you have the match on the TV?
Are you at work? I'm watching on FS1.
Me too
I thought he was tucked up in the Cottage with a brewski
You have the channel. We watched the England matches at your place in October
And a blankie!
Nasri with a shot… STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER!!!
Nasri shoots straight at Valdes off a pass from Yaya that was laid off by Silva. Should have done better.
I don't think Citeh will end the match with 11 men
Rangers have gone three up.
Rangers three up
McCullouch with his hat-trick..not sure it was a hat-trick of pens
That is a definite possibility.
Pathetic cross by Silva.
USELESS CROSS BY MILNER!!
What was he thinking
Back up and running now.
Saved off the line by Citeh
On the TV?
Hart was bailed out by Fernandinho on the line as he was out of position and rounded by Neymar. nice block by Kolorov off the shirt corner.
No - I'm over at Kate's watching on the laptop. She doesn't have FS1.
A minute of stoppage time.
The third McCulloch goal was not a pen.
Half time
Scoreless just as last night
Half time then. Barca should probably be 2-0 down. Martin think they've been "capable." I disagree. They need big changes right from the start.
Where are here priorities!!!
It's 0-0 at the half from the Nou Camp and 1-1 at the half in the other CL tie.
I agree Bob. You have been harsh UWS. She needs intensive programming to get to the point where we are.
If Burnley do manage to win tonight.. they would TEN points ahead of third!
Top two already decided?
Pretty boring so far
I have turned on the most recent Top Gear to watch with the boys
Yep - it's looking more and more like Leicester and Burnley for promotion this season - and relegation next season!
The second half underway from the Camp Nou. Jerko, a halftime sub shoots straight at Valdes.
Jerko came on for WHom?
St. Johnstone take the lead at Dundee United.
Only first half goal in the Championship. I did not expect that.
Dzeko is on for Aguero who barely had a touch in the first half.
A good substitution.
IW ill definitely pick Burnley for relegation as I did five years ago, but I expect the Foxes to be able to invest in enough players to survive relegation.
PSG take the lead
OH! Off the Miercoles roast from Messi as Lescoot horribly conceded possession then was shown a clean pair of heels by Messi before the little Argie shot off the post.
OH! Off the Miercoles roast from Messi as Lescoot horribly conceded possession then was shown a clean pair of heels by Messi before the little Argie shot off the post.
Superb save by Valdes from a header by Jerko off a great cross from Kolorov. It was headed for the top corner. The corner was cleared.
Hart down gathering bravely from the sliding challenge by Fab, who was harshly booked. Great pass by Messi.
Best chance of the match. Shame Dzeko wasn't on from the off.
Oh - Zabs has spurned an even better chance!
Zaba just wide off a cross from Kolorov that the Barca defense failed to clear.
PSG now 2-1 up vs Bayer.
Martin says that Dzeko has done more in the first ten minutes than Aguero did in the whole half. He's right but think of what they could have done together?
One pass too may from Citeh as Danny Alves cleared a pass from Yaya
I agree Bob. Fab has been just as quiet as Aguero.
Now finally Citeh are giving it a go. It's as if they just wanted to waste 45 minutes before they started playing. Why?
Still only one goal in four Championship matches.
I'm not sure. They need two to send it to ET.
