Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

Here's a footie brain teaser to take us all into a well-earned weekend:

"Danny Welbeck became the sixth English player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League this week when he notched three for his new club Arsenal against hapless Galatasaray. Name the other five."

(Bonus points if you can name the clubs involved!)

Good luck, lads!

Sorry, UWS - I should have added that Wee Mikey also scored one for Untied against Wolfsburg in 2009.

MUR is spot on with Andy Cole who notched not one but two for United: one against Feyenoord way back in 1997 and another against Anderlecht in 2000 (he must have a thing about Belgians). Ready Ted never scored one.

And UWS is also correct with Roon. who did indeed score a hat-trick for United against Fener in 2004. Stevie G. has never notched one.

So you've got three of the five (plus Welly) who have scored hat-tricks in the CL:

1. Michael Owen
2. Andy Cole
3. Wayne Rooney

What about the other two. If it helps, it was early on in the CL and both were notched by players who once played for the same side. One's simple and other is more difficult.

Is it Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer?

Alan Shearer is spot on, mate. He scored a hat-trick for Newcastle against Leverkusen in 2003.

His former Blackburn teammate Mike Newell scored for them against Rosenborg in 1995. Didn't think you'd get that one.

A bonus question then:

"Which player has scored the most hat-tricks in the Champions League? And which team did he score them for?"

UWS should get credit for Shearer because he mentioned him first. I mentioned Chris Sutton because of the Blackburn connection, but you are correct that I would not have guessed Mike Newell.

I am going to take a stab at the bonus question and say Raul of Real.
