Snowed in with the Prem
We're expecting between two and three feet of snow this morning in WNY, so I'm bunkered in to enjoy some Premiership footer. First up, it's Sunderland v. Liverpool at the Stadium of Light. Then the 10am fixtures, highlighted by a must-win match for Leeds away to Bolton. Then we wrap things up with a late thriller between United and Southampton. Join me for all the fun and send me some warm rays, won't you?
353 Comments:
Hello Bob. I am sorry to say that the best I can offer is windy, rainy weather England style. I guess it will make for a thaw in WNY. I will be around for the the first half of the first match then off to an academic meet. I will be around for the action on Sunday.
Morning, MUR - no worries; you can send us along mild, drizzly weather and it would be better than what we're getting today. Cor!
The MLS has very much been in the news in Britain this week. Liverpool skipper is very definitely off to the US to join LA Galaxy at the end of the season.
Not so with Frankie Lamps. Citeh are now claiming that he never even signed with NYC FC. So, what was with all of those photos he took with the Brooklyn Bridge behind him?
The team news out of the Stadium of Light this afternoon:
Sunderland - Pants, Vergini, O'Shea, Brown, Van Aan, Bridcutt, Giaccharini, Larsson, Gomez, Johnson, Wickham. Subs - Jones, Graham, Alvarez, Mannone, Buckley, Mandron, Agnew.
Liverpool - Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Henderson, Gerrard, Lucas, Moreno, Coutinho, Borini, Markovic. Subs - Enrique, Lovren, Lambert, Manquillo, Balo, Rossiter, Ward.
No Raheem Sterling in the Liverpool squad, which makes no sense at all. He's still on holiday, apparently, which Brendan Rogers trying to convince us that that was the plan all along.
Morning boys,
I am here for most of the morning... it's bloody freezing here too
Good morning lads. It's a nasty morning in South Texas. More than drizzle . It's windy, rainy and in the 30s. wind chills in the 20s. So much for us having a sub tropical climate.
It's the Tractor Boyz vs the Rams at Portman Road on BEIN. It's 0-0 seventeen minutes in with the Rams on top. Kiwi, Tommy Smith has been booked for tripping Chris Martin in the D. The Rams had two shots blocked moments earlier.
The free kick from Johnny Russell was curled over the wall and a few yards wide.
Wish I had that channel
It's warmer in the UK then deep South Texas. Who would have thought?
Sorry mate. I hope your staying warm.
Morning, boys. It sounds like a perfect Saturday to bunker in with some footer. I wish I were hanging out with Raheem Sterling in Jamaica, though.
I've got BEin but I'm watching the warm-up for the Sunderland v. Liverpool match at the Stadium of Light. So, Brendan Rogers is favoring Fabio Borini over Mario Balotelli up front today. Could Balo be heading out of the club already?
What a plonker... needs a rest...so do I!!
Of course, I am not getting play footer for a living and earning boat loads of money!
It's crossword time, before we get into the match:
"Org. with Larry O'Brien Trophy." (3 letters)
I could use a rest, too. And my back hurts and when are going to have a fine day? I'm sick and tired of this office.....
Gossip around De Gea
Of course, Real Madrid want him. United bought Valdes this week... United better not let him go!
Are United a feeder club for the Spanish Giants??
Sorry. I'm not familiar with that trophy.
Come on, Black Cats. Maybe Real Madrid or Barcelona could pull off the "Carmina Burana" theme as players are coming out of the tunnel. But a bottom half club from the Northeast? I don't think so. They should be playing the Theme from Benny Hill as they come out.
I sure hope not. I don't blame Real for wanting him, but I will take De Gea over Valdes any day.
Apparently, LVG says United have only ONE injured player right now. Ashley Young out for four weeks with a hammy.
Blind and Rojo are back in action
Totally agree with you MUR
It would be a terrible loss for United to allow De Gea to leave.
Fred has been pacing around the house, trying to play in the kitchen cabinets. Is it our unusually cool weather or is he thinking about the Reds?
Away we go at a windy SoL
We're about to get going - Peter Drury and Chrissy Waddle on the mic for this one.
Looks a wee bit parky at the SoL this afternoon.
They're off from the SOL. It looks more pleasant in Blighty than deep South Texas.
Fred's still off my Christmas Card list.
I have both matches on as Borini returns to the SOL ( Spanish for sun).
Did you guys watch any of the Everton West Ham Cup game?
I only saw a little of it but when I was watching it, I heard a fact I didn't know
The corner flags for match were triangular for the Cup tie. You can only have triangular flags if you have actually won the FA Cup
Oh - Coutinho found Markovic beautifully and Brown seemed to trip him up.
On the replay, it's a stone cold pen.
Liverpool wants a penalty. It looks like one to me.... Wes Brown with a stupid challenge... nothing given!
These defenders are morons!
I'm looking at the replay. Wes Brown got the ball as Markovic went down. It could have been a penalty.
Didn't watch that match - that is an interesting little trivia factoid.
Before that attack, Sunderland had started well and their man on the left has been wide open three times, they didn't give it to him twice
Five at the back for Liverpool? I don't like it.
I saw the match , but didn't notice the triangular flags.Eagle eyes by UWS and an interesting fact. I was completely unaware.
The announcer says it's cold in Blighty. I checked. It's colder here!
After a bright start, Sunderland are really retreating into their own half.
Definitely bloody colder here - only 5F in Fred-town this morning.
I'm sorry to hear that Bob.Fred wants to send you a card to celebrate something that's happening tomorrow.
I didn't notice the flags, the commentator made the comment and his partner didn't know it.
OUCH!!!! It is the frozen tundra. These announcers are whimps!
GOAL! Markovic again, this time stabbing home after a sweeping room.
1-0!
Goal for Pool... the ref was going to blow for a free kick but let them play on.. good decision ref
GOAL !!! MARKOVIC GIVES LIVERPOOL THE LEAD! hIS FIRST FOR pOOL!
Did you see the Battle of Uniteds in the Cup is on Friday night!
Markovic had the ball down the right. He intended a pass for Stevie G and it deflected to Borini . He played it back to MArkovic, who shot past the keeper as it deflected off a defender while he was dribbling. Poor defending.
That early goal has hushed the crowd at the SoL. Sunderland are only three points off the drop zone. Hull and West Brom play today, so they have a chance to put pressure on them.
That's a poor show. FA Cup matches should be Saturday at 3pm IMHO.
I did not. I assume you're talking about the one at our old stomping ground. I probably won't be around , so I will record it if it is being televised. Thanks for the update.
I agree with Bob. The FA are selling out to pressure from the telly companies.
A poor free kick from Seb LArsson is straight to Minnie, who also returns to the SOL.
These matches this weekend are the reverse fixtures from early December. There are always sets of fixtures that are q quick turn around between matches
Sunderland's poor position is due to excessive draws. Bob will be amused to hear that Fred is staring off into space. I guess he wasn't expecting to be behind so early.
Jackonory does the CAn Can to win a corner.
No kibble for Fred, in my book.
A long possession for the Black Cats off the corner.,
Borini's earned himself an early corner.
Borini is booked for a foul on JAckanory.
Yellow card for Borini, that is.
Shocking behavior from Bob as Fred was getting ready to send you a birthday card.
It's 0-0 at the half at Portman Road.
I'm marking that card "Return to Black Cat Sender."
Brendan Rogers appears to have gotten a jaunty scarf for Christmas.
really horrible conduct from such a normally well behaved lad! I bet you are singing quite a loony toon!
Elizabeth told me to tell you yikes, regarding the frozen tundra.
Stveie G has a shot turned away for a corner.
Gerrard fluffs his lines there when he had a volleyed chance.
I'm sending Fred a box full of snow and ice.
Tu ne suis pas Fred?
Vergini booked for obstructing Moreno just outside the box.
Oh - Pants tips over from Gerrard's acute angled free kick.
Panti pushes over a curling free kick from Stevie G.
Oh - Markovic with a cracker - saved by Pants off the Sunday roast.
Panti does well to turn around a powerful shot by Markovic , who was on the mark.
Henderson breaks forward but launches well over.
Half an hour in and Liverpool still well on top of the Black Cats.
Adam Johnson wins a corner for the Black Cats.
Back from running around the house... well not actually running around the house...Big game for United tomorrow! A win against the team directly blow us would extend the gap and then they have QPR and Leicester on the docket...we'll struggle in both!!
Minnie punches away the corner on his return to the SOL.
Welcome back. You may be right about that.
Bridcutt into the book now.
The second half is underway from Portman Road.
Did you see why Chelsea are top of the table?
Alphabetically!!!
A harsh booking and poor by Stevie G as he went down like a stack of dominoes from minim al contact.
I have a busy weekend of getting ready for my damn APPR observation... what a massive waste of time and effort
Coutinho was far too close to the free kick and has no reason to complain about being booked.
Yes - if the season were to end today, we'd have an unprecedented play-off match for the title.
Come on you Super Blues!
OH!!! off the post by Henderson, but the ref blew for hand ball.
Oh - Henderson has hit the post now! No - the ref rules it out anyway.
Into the side netting as the Black Cats are taking quite a beating.
Hendo off the post... handball called anyway
Jordan screams and swears at the ref... they need to stop that.. book him!
The thugs of rugby speak with respect to the refs
Gerrard off the side netting... commentator thought it was in
Oh - now Gerrard finds the side netting with an effort.
We don't have APPR , but we have observations and paperwork. A definite waste of time.
All Pool... Gerrard should have buried that one
Oh - Liverpool attack again and Gerrard ends up with the chance. Left-footed into the hands of Pants.
The Tractor Boys nearly scored as Lee Grant pushed away a powerful effort.
I agree, UWS. Should be a yellow card for abusing the ref.
Chelsea should not be top. Alpha order is ridiculous. It's a tie and should be ruled that.
Soccer Saturday going around the 3 o'clockers grounds... they say life for Swansea without Wilfred Bony....did he officially leave??
I agree with that too. That lack of respect needs to stop.
No he's at the ANC. Will be back in a few weeks.
Coming down to the last few minutes of the first half.
Yes - he's off to Citeh. I'm not sure that they need him.
Oh - Borini rounds Pants but then puts his effort into the side-netting.
Borini should have scored as he caught a superb slide rule pass, rounded Panti and shot into the side netting.
The Black Cats defense were napping as Fred is now.
Boni is off to Citeh? I know he's currently at the ANC.
If it ended this way, there would be a one game playoff for the league
But as it stands
Chelsea and City's records
Chelsea P 20 W 14 D 4 L2 F44 A19 GD+25 Pts 46
City P 20 W 13 D 4 L2 F44 A19 GD+25 Pts 46
I heard he could go to CIty.. didn't think about ANC
Mick with a change for the Tractor Boys as Jay Tabb is on for Stephen Hunt.
BUGGER!!! The Rams take the lead at Portman Road.
City's W should 14
Bugger is right
Half time at SoL... Sunderland should be pleased they're only one down
I'm off to the shower
I'll be back
Peep peep peep. That's half time at the SoL and there is a noticeable boo for the players as the whistle goes. The home crowd isn't happy with their side's efforts thus far. Liverpool go in 0-1 up.
An innocuous long ball from the Rams was not dealt with by Tommy Smith and Chris Martin finished easily past the keeper.
Liverpool are one up at the half and it should have been much more.
Will Hughes has a shot fumbled away by the Ipswich keeper then it is hoofed away. It came off a long solo run by Johnny Russell.
Cyrus Christie fouls Stephen Hunt in a clash of Republic of Ireland internationals . The free kick from Stephen Hunt is headed straight to Lee Grant from former Wolves teammate, Chris Berra, playing for former Wolves manager, Mick.
Noel Hunt is on for Paul Anderson as the Tractor Boys have one substitution remaining. Bob is all tool familiar with Noel Hunt.
Yep - Noel was a journeyman midfielder for us.
he final roll of the dice from Mick and hopefully a tasty one as Bru is on for Bishop. Hopefully checkmate for the Rams.
Well, there's a turn up - Gerrard is being subbed at half-time!
Dejan Lovren on for Gerrard then.
I am back showered and shaved in time for the second half
If this game doesn't improve or Liverpool get a goal or two... I am off for walkies before this ends
Gerrard off for the second half.
Could be this be a sign of Pool's future... dominated with their #8 and then fall apart when he's gone
Oh - Markovic starts the second half the way he played in the first half. Left footed effort just wide. What was in his Weetabix this morning?
That was a time-efficient shower, mate. Well done! I'm still in my robe and slippers. I'll be tackling the driveway again after the matches end today.
'tightness in leg"
The LA Galaxy blokes called and told them to get him off!
I'm off to the meet. It was great chatting with everyone. I will be around tomorrow.
CHEERS!
Oh dear - Bridcutt is yellow carded for the second time and he's off! Silly boy - Can was going nowhere there.
Black Cats down to ten men!
Undoubtedly the case, mate. Could this be the start of the end of Gerrard's career at Liverpool? Sad.
Sunderland down to ten men... again... these professionals are IDIOTS!!!
How much snow do you have or going to get.
We haven't got much
I actually had two back to back days of two hour delays
Thursday was because of dangerous temps and Friday was because of snow. We didn't' get a lot but it was the timing. I actually woke up and looked out the window and thought that's not much so I got ready. I came downstairs and turned on the TV to see the delay!
Take care MUR
BIrdcutt is a birdbrain
Adam Johnson off the bottom sided of the bar!
KNOCK IN THE REBOUND!!
Oh - Adam Johnson's shot hits the underside of the Liverpool bar!
That shot went all over the place in the wind - Mignolet had no chance!
Good luck at the meet, mate!
Henderson now picks up a yellow card - the cards are flying now.
I am getting fed up with the modern game with the fouls that players make
The cards that are given
Lovren in the book now
Now it's Lovren who's dived in and gets another yellow card. Liverpool have really gone off the boil since half-time.
Some of the fouls that get cards are unfair.
Sometimes, the man goes into the tackle and it is late only because the ball was moved at the last second.
There was an attempt to get the ball!
It does drive me crazy that refs wait until about 35 minutes in to give out any cards and then you get a flurry of cards right around the middle of the match.
On the second look, I'm not sure that either of Bridcutt's fouls needed a yellow.
Lots of debris on the pitch just blowing about.
Oh - Moreno had a chance to hit one right-footed after Coutinho's feed but elected to get it back on his left peg. Why can't professional footballers use both feet?
Oh - Coutinho with an effort just wide left.
Fabio Borini has had an uneven match today. He's off to be replaced by Balo. Wahay!
I am back from making myself some breakie....english toasting bread...yummy
Derby down to ten men but in the 91st minute
The Rams have won at PR... bugger
Balo is right into the fray with a free kick and a couple of blocked shots. He's got a point to prove.
Derby seem destined to go up this season.
Sounds like a lovely brekkies.
Some part of a stand's roof is flapping at Goodison... match is still on though
Burnley name the same starting XI for the seventh-successive Premier League match, the first time that has happened in the top flight since Birmingham managed 12 games with the same team in 2009-10.
I picked the Rams for promotion
Maybe Burnley only have 11 players in the squad these days? ;-)
Having trouble pulling up the SS link today - too many bloody pop-ups on Safari!
Nathan Bright: If only Liverpool had someone who wasn't on holiday with real pace to stretch Sunderland now they're down to 10 men.....
I had that problem too... I got this one working
http://ifirstrowus.eu/watch/311341/1/watch-soccer-saturday.html
This one's coming down to the wire, Liverpool with the slim lead going into the last ten minutes.
Cheers, mate - I'll give it a shot.
Classic... Balo falls!
Ball with a comical pratfall there - one for the Men in Blazers show.
Not a lot of time left. Shouldn't be much stoppage time.
Pool trying to walk it into the net now.
Did you see that the Norwich manager resigned and the Canaries now have the player-manager of Hamilton Accies in charge
Three minutes of stoppage time - won't be enough for Sunderland.
Best move of the match for Sunderland. Drive to the by-line and then chipped up for Mandron to head over.
Last chance saloon for Sunderland. Cleared out.
Last chance saloon for the Black Cats... here comes the corner..cleared
One last corner. Pants comes trotting up. Was he fouled in the box?
Sunderland diving
So are Liverpool
Lucas complained about diving... Pool do it too!!!
That's it
Pool with a win over a poor Sunderland
I'm off for walkies before the ten o'clockers
That's that - Liverpool hang on for a win that moves them up to 8th. Good away result for them, despite a lackluster second half.
I'm off to the magical couch for a wee kip before the 10 am kickoffs.
Chelski v. managerless Newcastle up next. Here are the players in the tunnel at the Bridge now:
Chelski - Cech, Ivano, Zouma, Terry, Azpi, Fab, Matic, Willian, Oscar, Hazard, Costa.
Newcastle - Krul, Janmaat, Colo, Williamson, Dummett, Colback, Anita, Cabella, Sissoko, Gouffran, Perez.
The side that Redders has put out for Leeds against Bolton today -
Silvestri, Berardi, Bellusci, Cooper, Taylor, Murphy, Cook, Byram, Austin, Sloth, Morison.
We're away at the Bridge now.
Sissokho with an early effort into Cech's arms.
Wahay!!!!!!!
An early goal for the Leeds boys - Rudy Austin with a 3rd minute penalty. That's an early birthday pressie for me!
Brum into the lead against Wigan with a 2nd minute effort from Donaldson.
That would be a priceless goal for us - only Rudy's fourth of the season - if it were to bring us three points today.
We're about ten points off last season's pace and in real trouble.
Free kick for Newcastle now...cleared out and Chelski are back on the break.
Im back from a very chilly walk
10 minutes in
Leeds already ahead?
Crikey - Shadow owes you some love, mate. Welcome back!
Lukkaku straight into the wall with a free kick
I'm at Goodison
Are you at the Bridge?
Yes, indeed - a 3rd minute pen from Rudy Austin.
absolutely he does
Burnley take the lead against QPR
Well done Leeds
Navas should have scored for City
Scott Arfield with Burnley's goal
Shame it wasn't at Liverpool
Arfiled scores at Anfield
That's a priceless goal for Burnley; that pulls them out of the drop zone.
Free kick chance again for the Toffees
Lukaku hit the wall before
This time Baines is going to take it... he does his best impersonation of Lukaku... hits the wall
Cardiff ahead of Fulham
