Time to Exorcise Some Demons
I'm back in The Cottage this morning and ready to enjoy at least part of the best weekend of footer action every season. The main attraction today? For footie historians, it's got to be Leeds' trip to the Stadium of Light, which will bring back dark memories of 1973 for the LUFC elders. It's time to put that curse to rest, lads. Join me here on the LOB to see it happen, won't you?

I've dialed up the FSC coverage of the Cup this morning. Very interesting. The panel of Rob Stone, Waldo, and Warren are copying the "Men in Blazers" style, cracking jokes and even singing (!) while showing the clips of yesterday's Cup goals.
Shocking that FSC have chosen to show Dover v. Palace rather than the historically resonant between my beloved and the Black Cats. Shame on them.
Good morning Bob. Great minds think alike. I'm joining you for the action. It starts at scenic Dover as they host Palace. AH! The romance of the Cup.
Fox did well yesterday, showing fifteen goals in two matches. Hopefully , it's a repeat today. Both matches were closer than the scores would suggest.
The teams are out near the White Cliffs as Warren mentioned. If I ever make trip back to Blighty, that will be on my bucket list.
Okay, I agree. The 86 spots between Dover and Palace combined with the bucolic setting in Dover does make for good telly.
They're off from Dover.
There's also an evil Cup tie at Loftus Road as QPR host the Evil Blades. I hope they do each other in.
Oh - Palace were nearly in front from the kickoff - great run and cross by Zaha and Murray's header was just about clawed away by the keeper.
An early chance for Palace as Glenn Murray, who hasn't played in ages , has a close range header kept out by the keeper. Great cross by Zaha.
Morning, MUR - great to be back in The Cottage watching the FA Cup with you. Brings back memories of being in Harlingen two years ago.
Barry "Bloody" Bannan with a typical piece of greed. Should have played Zaha in.
So, how was the trip? I saw your text. I think today is the best day of the season based on the matches being played even though Saturday is traditionally the main day. The better matches are today
it's the history of Cup finals past. A late one for dad and Gooner as the Gunners host Hull City in a repeat of the last final and the Monday nigher is a chance for Liverpool to seek revenge on the final of '88. There's also the repeat of that '73 final
The team line-ups at the Stadium of Light:
Sunderland - Pants, Vergini, Coates, O'Shea, Van Aan, Rodwell, Bridcutt, Gomez, Giacchiano, Fletch, ALvarez.
Leeds - Silvestri, Berardi, Del Fabro, Cooper, Taylor, Sloth, Austin, Murphy, Adryan, Antenucci, Montenegro.
Oh - Murray with another big chance but the keeper did well again.
The trip was great, mate - did three Christmasses with the various families in Virginia. Glad to be home, though. Got back late last night.
Another chance and then another. Both to Murray. First, the keeper saved a shot then he had a header pushed out for a corner. A poor corner from Barry Blooody Bannon was headed away by the first man as well as the corner from Zaha.
GOAL! Scott Dann breaks the deadlock in the 10th minute for Palace!
It was Zaha again who was the provider and Dann snuck in at the back post to volley home. Easy peasy.
GOAL !!! SCOTT DANN VOLLEYS PALACE INTO THE LEAD . IT'S BEEN COMING AS I DID NOT SEE WHO CROSSED, BUT A DEFENDER HEADED ON AND SCOTT DANN VOLLEYED IN AT THE FAR POST.
You answered that question. I'm sure we'll see plenty of goals.
It's great to hear. I've enjoyed being off. I do enjoy getting back to chatting on the LOB and enjoying the pleasure of everyone's company.
I wanted to let you know that I will respond to the New Year's resolution thread today. I'm hoping for a year of maintaining rather than new resolutions. For once , I had a year where I actually followed through on my resolutions.
Cheers, mate - I'll look forward to hearing what's on your list.
A great start for Alan Pardew as manager of Palace. His best playing years were there. Your thoughts on the two managerial changes. I thought both changers were for the better for both clubs.
I do agree with you that the games today are superior to those yesterday. It's the best day of the season!
A lot of news this morning. The MLS has decided to allow Frank Lampard to stay in England with Citeh until the end of the season. That's an appalling decision that will depress ticket sales for the fledgling NYC FC team.
I agree. Yesterday was a better day to miss. Also, yesterday was the first day where I could tell a manager was pissed at his team despite winning 7-0. Pubis looked like he was ready to lay into the players . I think he's trying to send a message.
I understand, but Citeh are back in the title race and see him as a more influential player than they originally anticipated. The tradeoff is the your beloved Galaxy will have Stevie G replace Landycakes at the end of the Prem season. Did you read about that?
Dover have a corner!
Both teams thought they had a penalty. Credit to Andre Marriner for two non calls. Ball to chest on Martin Kelly as Dover wanted a penalty and not for Palace as Dwight was fairly tackled in the box.
Halfway through the first halfs. No goals in the other two matches, including that biggie at the SoL.
In yesterday's matches the Prem teams showed their class in the second half , which is when they won handily. The same today?
Let's hope not.
You will not want to hear this, but Fred is sitting behind me purring. does that signify anything?
Glenn Murray's got some trouble now. Perhaps an ankle knock?
Glenn Murray is down while I'm asking Fred about the match at the SOL. Fred is a good boy whatever he thinks.
Dover is a definite must see if I ever visit Blighty.
Well, the Black Cats do seem to be turning the screw at the SoL. A string of corners earned. But we're hanging on. You have my permission to kick him out in the back yard.
A scramble in the box of the corner from Bannon and another corner to Palace.
GOAL! Scott Dann gets his brace!
GOAL !!! SCOTT DANN WITH HIS AND PALACE'S SECOND AS HE HEADS IN A CORNER FROM WHO? BARRY BLOODY BANNON.
Oh dear - Sunderland are purring now as they take the lead through Peter van Aanholt. Left footed shot into the bottom corner past Silvestri.
Nearly another for Palace as the keeper did well to save a near post effort from Ward after a miss kick from Bloody Bannon that will amuse Bob.
Sorry Bob. I know Fred will be happy. Now I know why he was purring.
More giant killing for the Evil Blades? They have taken the lead at Loftus Road in an evil cup tie.
Fred will not go out back. He's been an indoor cat for the past six years and wouldn't stand a chance. . I'm trying to stay neutral in that match
It's hard to see a way back for Dover. Hopefully, this one doesn't get out of hand.
Late by Martin Kelly as he appaeared to be injured, but is up and ready to continue.
Jack Rodwell has had to be replaced by Sebi Larsson.
Are you watching on a link because I couldn't find one for that match at the SOL?
I wonder if Mark Bright was influential in having his old mate be the new gaffer of Palace.
No - just following the text on Football 365.
I saw your kind remarks about the visit to Harlingen. It was great to have you and Gooner around for the third round. We've had a similar weather pattern since Wednesday, but it's supposed to improve today. I hope to host something similar in the near future.
The Evil Blades are one up at Evil Loftus Road at the half.
Essam booked for a naughty challenge on Joe Ledley.
Into stoppage time.
Just a minute and that's almost up.
I'd love to see a goal back for our lot before half-time.
It's halftime and it's been a routine first half for Palace as they are two up at the half.
Half time comes. Palace go in cruising it on the south coast.
Sunderland leading Leeds 1-0. I'll need to do some Leeds United Calypso in the kitchen during the interval.
They're still in it . Only one down and a goal for your team really makes it a cup tie.
I'm getting brekkies myself.
Alan Pardew is making a halftime substitution. The announcer said it's a signing from Wolves. He doesn't look familiar.
The second half is underway
Back with some brekkies as well. Hoping that my mojo routine in the kitchen will bring some fortune in the second half.
How did I not recognize him? Kevin Doyle is on for what I think is a Palace debut. He's on for Andrew Johnson, who hasn't played in ages.
Welcome back, mate. Your'e back ni time to hear that the Evil Blades are two up at Evil Loftus Road.
That's not helping my dark mood at all this morning. Are we sure that we couldn't sacrifice Fred for the cause?
That's rather naughty. He's taking a cat nap , I guess feeling confident.
Dann on a hat-trick didn't quite get enough on that header.
Kevin Doyle has a cross tipped out for a corner and Scott Dan heads straight to the keeper from, the corner, wanting a hat-trick
Good news from Harlingen as the sun is creeping out as we've been locked in a weather pattern since Wednesday similar to that from when you and the Gooner visited.
The Dover keeper bravely pushes it out for a corner.
It's peeing down rain here. Glad I moved the car inside last night.
Nope. it's a goal kick, but did well to keep Palace at bay.
I guess it's better than snow. It sounds like our weather on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Your kind remarks reminded me to mention that I'm thinking of hosting a mini reunion some time in the near future. Your thoughts?
That's adding insult to injury. Connor Wickham, who was on loan with us this time last season, has been introduced.
Sounds like a great idea - what's the occasion?
That's naughty. will he score?
The shaky camera work is adding to the ambiance at Dover.
I'm not sure. I think next year will be better , but that's still in the works.
Let's hope not. Redders has just replaced Adryan who won't know anything about the FA Cup with Billy Sharpe. Come on, you Whites!
That's always characteristic on the non league grounds as well as the requisite breezy days.
Dover hanging on as they scramble clear for a corner after two blocked shots.
You will be receiving a "Save the Date" shortly for our wedding date on June 20 in Richmond, VA. Would love to see you and Elizabeth, if you're available.
Scott Dann heads wide from the corner. Why is he getting so many free headers?
Yes. I will definitely love to come. I will need to ask Elizabeth. It will be my pleasure to come. Cheers mate.
I'm hoping that the LOB will be well represented. We had a chance to share some pork pies with West Ham Rising last week while in DC.
GOAL! Dwight Gayle smashes home Palace's third goal.
GOAL !!! SURELY THIS IS DONE AND DUSTED AS DWIGHT GAYLE HAS PUT PALACE THREE UP.
So Pardew looks to be heading for a winning start to his tenure at Palace. Will he be able to keep him up?
Hey boys
Sorry I have been late joining.
Been doing some stuff around the house
Palace coasting
QPR losing 2-0 at home to the Blades
Leeds trying to come back
The Palace fans are having a nice day out on the south coast now, setting off a few blue and red flares in the stands.
The keeper will be really disappointed as he was beaten at his near post. Also Dover coughed up the ball in midfield and were clinically punished. Nice assist from Joe Ledley
I hate Fox
They aren't bothering to watch NBC to see how coverage should be done
AND
They now have Lexi!!
Morning, UWS - great to have you on board. Thanks for keeping me up to date on the scores yesterday.
Good morning UWS. Great to have you around. You made it in time for the United match, coming up next
QPR have won TWO Cup ties in the last DECADE
Not exactly Cup Kings
I thought that Waldo and Warren were trying to copy the Men in Blazers comedy routine with their coverage of yesterday's goals this morning.
As much as we love a giant killing, Palace deserve their three goal lead as they've bossed this match
Jerome Thomas is on for Dwight Gayle, who just scored.
Goalscorer Gayle coming off to be replaced by Jerome Thomas.
For some reason, I do have both FS1 and FS 2
They are going to be showing both Manc clubs
United on 1 and Citeh on 2
Shame there is no coverage from SOL
QPR are not going to add to that this season. The Blades continue as giant killers.
Not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow!
Correct. Citeh kick off at 10 and United at 1030. I will use the PIP. Will you all be around for the late one at 1230 , which is he replay of the last Cup Final?
Me either. At least I don't get students until Tusday
Adrian Mariappa is on for Joe Ledley , who assisted on that last goal
I'm back tomorrow as well, although classes don't start for another two weeks.
Sunderland have thrown Adam Johnson on now.
I noticed that the draw for the Fourth Round is tomorrow around 230 just before the repeat of the 1988 final kicks off. Will anyone be around? I will since I don't have students.
Your'e Whites are creditably still in this match. Currently the same score as back in '73.
Murphy wins Dover's second corner of the match. it was off of Mariappa.
Rare work for Wayne Hennessey as he catches the corner.
Poor by Zaha as he fell down easily in the box. He should have been booked for that
There isn't a link either.
I have a SkySportsNews link for updates
I should be around, mate. Hope we're still in the draw. Down to about ten minutes.
Are you nervous MUR about Yeovil?
MK Dons 4 U 0
How times have changed
1973 Mighty Leeds vs Second tier Sunderland
Now Sunderland v Second tier Leeds
I know, I know. Don't remind me.
I'll be teaching, I might be home for the match
I'm not . Yeovil are struggling in League as opposed to MK and we've improved since then. I think we will win without being really convincing. I expect something similar to this match at Dover.
Someone's Toffees host Johnno's Hammers on Tuesday. I might be around for the second half of that one.
Souleymane Doukara, our joint top scorer has replaced Brian Montenegro. Not quite sure why he didn't start the bloody match.
United really need to win the Cup again... not won since 2004!!
Only one player in the United squad has a winner's medal
Can you name him?
Should be around for the matches tomorrow and Tuesday.
I was wondering what you all make of Stevie G replacing Landycakes at the Galaxy at the end of the season.
Juan Mata?
I am guessing that it's Fletch. Is that correct?
I don't get these managers, yesterday Newcastle made 8 changes for their Cup match
WHAT ELSE DO THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A CHANCE OF WINNING!!
I can understand the lowly teams wanting not to get relegated but the mid table teams... try and win something!!
4 nil
GOAL! Doyle sticks home the fourth. Bannan let loose Thomas who squared it. Easy.
That is correct
GOAL!!! KEVIN DOYLE PUTS PALACE FOUR UP WITH A TAP IN AT THE FAR POST. NICE PASS FROM BANNON TO JEROME THOMAS WHO LAID IT ON A PLATE FOR DOYLE.
Wilson and Falcao up front for United
Herrierra and Roon in the midfield
Hopefully that's a sign that United do well. I agree 100% about United needing to win the FA Cup. It's been far too long.
United's line up
De Gea
Smalling
McNair
Blackett
Rafa
Feltch
Herrara
Roon
Shaw
WIlson
Falcao
4 added minutes at SoL
Zaha fouled by Sterling just outside the box.
Leeds hit the post from a header!!
Cleared
Into stoppage time.
Precious few chances for Leeds in this second half. We seem to be capitulating.
Into stoppage time and we have a free kick. Come on!
Bob will be amused that Barry Bloody Bannon got it horribly wrong from the free kick.
Not amused about the near miss.
What do you think about the Lampard story?
I can understand that he wants to stay but if NYCFC really own him then they should have him back
This will be bad that City can just have two clubs and switch players!!
The Blades are three up!!
A decent lineup. Not a full strength lineup, but not a complete reserve side either. LVG was hinting that he will take the cup seriously this year
Full Time at Loftus Road
We're piling on the late pressure now. Come on!
The Blades have won by three. I find it hard to believe that Harry's lads took this seriously .
All over at SoL
Sorry mate
There's the full time whistle at Dover. Not a bad start for Alan Pardew. Through to the next round.
Palace win by four. It was a routine win.
Oh - Liam Cooper has hit the post with a header from a free kick!
Same score as in 73
Let's hope it is the same tomorrow night as time past
Sorry Bob. it was a brave performance.
I agree about tomorrow. That would be a huge upset.
Big game in the Championship next week Ipswich v Derby... just saw an advertisement for it
BUGGGER! We've lost 1-0. A miserable start to the day. Hope you're United do a lot better.
Apparently, Wimbledon have the strongest player in the world... according to FIFA 15
I think Citeh own NYFC , so they have Citeh have the final say as they own NYFC and want him till the end of the season as Citeh are back in the title race.
WOW!!! A throwback to the Crazy Gang Days?
I agree that City own them and that is what will be unfair.
They could loan David Villa for a month next season to help them score goals!!
I have switched to FS 2 as Citeh vs Not a Big Club is about to kick off.
Well, that was a miserable start to the day. I feel like going back to bed. But I'll continue to watch the footer.
I guess it's advantage Citeh in the title race. I knew there was a reason why I picked them in the PPP.
They're off from the Etihad.
Was I correct with the guess of Juan Mata?
Let's hope Citeh will put Not a Big Club to the sword.
I hope you stay around ,Bob. There's lots of footie remaining.
Nope. That was a naughty response. It was Fletch.
Citeh scored seven second half goals when these teams met in the Capital One Cup earlier this season. I'm sure Bob will be hoping for more of the same.
Sorry - since United hadn't won it for 10 years, I thought it might be a player who won it for another club.
well wide by Citeh , but it turned out to be a corner.
Yeah - I'd like 8-0 today. Give them such a hammering that they decide to abandon football altogether.
No probs mate. I was just giving you some good natured stick.
They're not smart enough to get the hint. Citeh must have been really thirsty that match to have gone seven up.
Eight isn't enough today. I want nine!
Come on WEDNESDAY!!
what do you make of Stevie G heading for the LA Galaxy?
Jovatic is giving the Not a Big Club defenders fits already.
Jovetic was offside and he will be greatful as it was a horrible touch off a great cross from Kolorov.
Wish he was going somewhere else
BOOM BOOM Bob!I will go for Citeh to support Bob.
Could be a good move for him - depends on what his attitude is.
Citeh win a corner on a speedy corner led by Milner, who found Lampard. It needed a better cross from Navas.
Well over by Navas from the corner.
Has Rogers pushed Gerrard out?
Is Gerrard being a baby and saying if I'm not first on the team sheet I'm off?
He didn't celebrate on either of his pens against Leicester
I think Stevie will have a good attitude. I wonder if UWS would prefer to see him NYFC. I was hoping for DC United or the Revs .
He quit England to play more for Pool
He's leaving them too early
Those were dubious pens that spared Pool an embarrassing defeat. My guess is that Rodgers pushed him out.
I thought of the Revs too. I know they aren't owned by the Sox/Pool owners but there is a City connection
The Revs are owned by the Pats owners
A rare corner for the Owls. Kolorov dribbles out and the long ball for Jovetic is cut out.
The MLS always try to stack the LA and New York teams because they're the major media markets.
Off for short walk in the frozen tundra
I'll be back close to ko
Bloody hell! Not a Big Club have scored. This morning is sucking big time.
GOAL !!! CITEH LOOKING LIKE THEY'RE NOT A BIG CLUB
