Sunday in the Cup
I'm back on Sunday morning to follow the 4th Round Cup action. It's going to be hard to beat the action-packed drama of yesterday's fixtures. It's a day of Premiership v. Championship today. First up is West Ham's visit to Bristol City. The in-between one at 10am is Villa vs. high-lying Bournemouth. Then the late one is Arsenal away to Brighton. By the end of the morning we should have sorted out the age-old question of which league is the most competitive. Join me for a cuppa and a chat, eh?

Typical bloody Fox Soccer behavior - there is no preview this morning. The FS2 coverage of the early one starts at 9am, with some cage fighting as the pre-match entertainment. (sigh)...
Good morning Bob. I have a pot brewing. There were some massive upsets yesterday. I wonder if that's the most in one day.
Strangely, I've got the coverage up on the Fox Soccer 2 Go website but still nothing on the telly. What a nonsense!
I agree. There should be at least a pre-match show.It should be coming on any second. Did you see who the highest ranked team is left in the cup?
I might use that sight for the match at Villa park. The Villains may not be able to steal any cherries of a tree.
I can see another giant killing in the opening match as the high flying Robins, top of League One , take on the Hammers. Fat Sam fields a full strength side after seeing yesterday's upsets.
The team news at Ashton Gate:
Bristol City - Fielding, Ayling, Flint, Williams, Little, Smith, Saville, Bryan, Freeman, Smith, Emmanuel-Thomas. Subs: Osborne, Elliott, Wagstaff, Richards, Cunningham, Agard, Pack.
West Ham - Adrian, Jenkinson, Reid, Tomkins, Cresswell, Song, Noble, Nolan, Downing, Valencia, Carroll. Subs: Jarvis, Sakho, Demel, Amalfitano, Jasskulainen, Poyet, Cole.
Morning, MUR - I'm glad that the FS 2 Go site has helped out. Welcome!
Cheers Bob. Ta for the site.
There is major upset potential in this one. West Ham is in good form and Fat Sam is not taking any chances today with a strong side, but Steve Cotterill's side are absolutely flying in L1 and will be full of confidence.
They're off from Ashton Gate.
If I were Johnno , I would be concerned.
it's strange seeing the Hammers in all purple. Johnno will probably not be pleased about that
Bristol City look a decent side. They don't look like a route 1 side.
I agree, MUR - the Hammers back four will have trouble containing Jay Emmanuel, the former Arsenal youth prospect who has been scoring hatfulls of goals in L1.
The Robins with the early pressure as the Hammers blocked a goal bound effort
Early chance on the turn by big Matt Smith. I don't believe that's the Matt Smith that we sold to Fulham earlier in the season, but it's possible. Looks a bit like him.
I agree. Jay Emaanuel is definitely the danger man. LVG would do well to consider him as a possible signing.
Oh - JET (as I'll be calling him today to save typing) was nearly on to a chance there. And now a corner. All Robins pressure so far and the crowd is buzzing.
A corner to the Robins as Matt Smith is causing problems.
Oh - off the line by Mark Noble from the header by Smith!
Matt Smith has a header cleared off the line as the corner from Luke Freeman caused all sorts of problems. United players would do well to see how that corner was taken.
Smith and JET are a potent "Little and Large" combination - I've always liked that strike partnership, which was popular in the 70s but you don't see much of anymore.
Mastt Smith clears for a Hammers corner as Andy Carroll was a nuisance.
You can tell the ambition of the club by the sight of two sides of the ground under construction. Reminds me a bit of Stamford Bridge in the 80s.
Flint heads away the corner and the Robins are on the attack.
I agree. I hope that reconstruction doesn't cause financial problems like projects have for other clubs.
Matt Smith with nine goals in his last eleven matches . No wonder why Bob misses him.
I've just done the customary anoraking as the commentator announces what I found - it is indeed the Matt Smith who did so well with us alongside Ross McCormack. I'm surprised that he's out on loan so soon from Fulham.
Little wins a corner for the Robins after an overcooked cross from Luke Freeman . Big Matty was called for a push off a decent corner that again caused the Hammers all sorts of problems.
Me too, but Fulham have been in a great run of form themselves, so they m,ust have somone else bagging in the goals.
We do indeed miss Smith and McCormack. At this stage of the season, Ross had 19 goals and Smithy had 10. At present, Souleymane Doukara and Mirko Antenucci are level top scorers on seven. No wonder we're where we are in the table!
I was glad to see Jose man up and not make excuses and glad to see him looking shell shocked for once. He looked like he just came from a funeral. It will perhaps bring him down to earth.
Luke Freeman with a shot , but the wicked defelction fell kindly for Adrian, the scorer of the winning pen in the last round.
Jose was fairly gracious yesterday but I have to suspect that he doesn't really care much about a Cup run. The Premiership and Champions League have got to be his main targets.
I don't think I've ever seen this change strip for West Ham. Why couldn't they wear their customary white shirts and maroon shorts?
I am sorry to tell you that the W Yorkshire Derby will not be on BEIN. Brentford vs Middlesbrough , which kicks off 15 minutes earlier will be televised instead.
Jose actually put out a decent side .He's one of the few foreign managers that takes the cup seriously. He put out a decent side , which was much stronger than what LVG put out . As he stated, they should be embarrassed. The Bantams should have easily been dispatched with the side he put out.
Hey Boys
I am here for a bit
I actually have FS2 and the matches are there today.
Bristol C and then Brighton
Did you read my comments at the end of yesterday's post?
That's shocking behavior from BEin. Shocking.
City go close with a shot across the box
Nice one two and a superb touch from Jay Emmanuel as Flint shot just wide. He could have given the Robins the lead.
Fortunately, my brother also has an account with BEin, which might include a link for the West Yorkshire Derby. I'll have to look up that sign-in info for next week.
Good morning UWS. Great to have you around for another day of possible upsets.
I read you comments about the kit of West Ham.
I think they wore these at home in the last round against Everton
Flint should have put the Robins one up. The Hammers defense are already looking ragged.
I think BEIN picked that match due to the time slot and it's a promotion six pointer. I can see why they picked that even though you have a good point too.
Morning, UWS - I'm just going back to read the end of yesterday's post.
Comments about my comments from yesterday ?
I think so, UWS. I don't like the kit and I think Johnno wouldn't either.
I agree, Bob.The Robins have looked more like the Prem side . Little wins them another corner.
Bristols are on top.....that's not a result... it's just a bit of gossip
Andy Carroll headers off the line... did that hit his hand
OH!! A successful short corner and Andy Carroll heads off the line from a header by Matty Smith off a cross from Jay Emmanuel.
Incredible, stat, UWS - only the 13th side in the Prem is through to the 5th Round now. The Cup has certainly delivered on its romantic promise this round.
Oh - Smith nearly scored again. Carroll off the line!
no one is saying it but I think he used his hand and not head
I'd like to see that replay again. Now it's Carroll in the other box threatening.
Frank Fielding warms his palms as he punches away a header from Any Carroll.
I didn't notice a hand and it's a tough one to spot without a replay. Hard to blame the officials if he did. I will need to check it out
Carroll's arm was up but the ball didn't seem to hit it. Lucky boy.
I think it was a hand ball
The shot from the side is better than the one from the back
It was his head
Im an idiot
I read your comments yesterday did you mean the top three in the same day? That might be a first. It was a day of massive giant killings. It's scary that we're the highest ranked team going in the draw tomorrow and we couldn't even beta the lowest ranked team going into the draw.
I disagree , UWS. Everything happened so quickly that it's hard to spot. I wa seven guessing.
West Ham seem to have weathered the storm for the moment and are starting to knock it about a bit.
Talk of Daren Fletcher set to leave Old Trafford for Upton Park
What happened with him and LVG. He was made vice captain not long ago
I guess the bookies will make us and the Gunners favorites to win the Cup , providing the Seagulls don't crap all over them , and I know how that feels. It's not really pleasant. Once is enough.
I think LVG realizes he's past it . The Gooner sent me a link on bookface that LVG is the exterminator that needs to clean out a skunk infestation.I told him to add Mrs. Jones to the list.
True - I reckon Brighton could easily give Arsenal a match today.
ABSOLUTELY... take Valencia with him
The Hammers have been riffled as illustrated by Adrian , who had no business telling off Jay Emmanuel . It was a valid challenge. Adrian should have been booked.
I did put a link on yesterday's post for links. I know we've used it before but First Row is getting too dangerous to use with all the crap that opens up.
I was able to watch the whole of Match of the Day on the BBC last night
Half an hour in and I don't think that Frank Fielding has had a save to make yet.
I told Bob that LVG would do well to sign Jay Emmmaul-Thomas. He's a handful and you can tell that he spent his formative years at the Gooner's Academy./
Another good corner from Luke Freeman and Matty Smith called for a foul again.
He hasn't Bob..Who would have thought that a League One keeper would have no action against a Prem side.
I agree, UWS. That link nearly did in my computer at work. That would have been a tough one to explain.
The draw for the Fifth Round is tomorrow at 2:20 PM EST. I know that Lineker will be one of the people doing the draw.
I definitely want Bristol C, Bournemouth and Brighton to win
Will people love it or or hate it that the big guns aren't there for the TV money
Fielding with his first save of the match as a cross from the Private and Andy Carroll forces the save.
Bob, no comment about my very clever 9:24 comment?
Me too. I think people will like it since people like giant killings. A lot of the Prem sides dumped out were near full strength sides.
I didn't comment because i don't understand it. The Robins are on top this match and in League 1. It must be something witty that I didn't get.
I have yet to see a goal in match I've watched this round. I was gone yesterday morning when the goals were scored.
Surprisingly, there are still a lot of us still alive for the Cup in the PPP even after yesterday' Premier League massacre
Its to do with Python. Bob missed the comment and then missed my comment about missing the comment
I was wondering about that. I wonder if I am. The worst day ever for top flight sides in the history of the Cup.
Sorry I missed the earlier Python reference, UWS. Nice one!
I've watched a lot of Python , but didn't remember that one. I can always count on you to increase my Python knowledge.
Election Night Special is one of my favorite Python sketches, of course. I post it here on the LOB every Election Night.
Into stoppage time as Enner Valencia rolls around to get a player booked. I hate that and Lee Mason should not be stupid enough to fall for that nonsense.
I'm multi-tasking a bit, starting the prep for lemon-ricotta pancakes with Kate. Should be a delicious half-time brekkies.
That's it - The Robins have been the better side but nothing to show for it.
That's it for half time
Off for a shower
It's 0-0 at the half and Fat Sam's lads have been in match. They are lucky not to be trailing.
I remember that one, Bob.
Come back, squeaky clean, mate.
Thanks to Bob ans Steve , I have the match from Villa Park on the Fox2Go link. That match is about to kick off.
Eddie Howe has made eight changes from the team that lost at ER on Tuesday. The ancient Ian Harte is starting.
He's 37 years old, the same age as his manager, Eddie Howe.
Theyr'e off from Villa PArk.
A Cherries reserve side, so there may not be an upset as Eddie Howe makes promotion a priority
The second half is underway from Ashton Gate,.
Dog is at me for walkies
I'll be listening to the match on talksport
Can the Robins press their advantage in this second and earn a 5th Round berth?
The Cherries reserve team with the first chance as nEIL mACdONALD SHOOTS JUST OVER.
It's actually a corner as Ian Harte whipped it in and Villa are greatful that Shay Given was fouled.
Shay Given with a routine save off a deflected effort from Arter.
Lee Mason is losing his patience with big Andy Carroll.
Andy Carroll merely lectured for an agricultural challenge, whic was not any different from the one that got a Bristol City player booked at the end of the first half.
Matty Smith wins a free kick off of Song as Weimann headed just wide fior the Villains first chance of thwe match
JET hits a free kick straight at Adrain. Wasted effort.
The Cherries wanted a spot kick off a challenge from Kieran Clark on Kermorgant. it seemed fair , but the Cherries should have had a free kick just outside the box seconds later.
Liam O'Kane is off for treatment due to gash on the side. The Cherries are temporarily a man down
A positive move for the Hammers as Amalfitano is on for Song, who has had an unusally poor match. He didn't influence the match at all.
O'Kane is back on and bandaged .
BAcuna fouls Fraser about 30 yards out.
A waste as Ian Harte lofts in a free kick and the offside flag is raised. Kermorgant was offside.
Well over by Ten Downing Street and halfway there with that effort.
I have yet to see a live goal this weekend.
OH!!!! The Cherries nearly take the lead as O'kane finds Arter, who rounds Given , but his shot cleared off the line by Kieran Richardson. Then Weimann shoots wide from 25 yards out.
Naught by Winston Reid on MAtty Smith as the Kiwi defender has had his hands full today
The Cherries have a free kick due to hand ball by Carlos Sanchez, who was lucky not to be booked.
Richardson concedes yet another free kick for the Cherries.
Big Matt should hacve given the Robins the lead as he had a free header, but headed over.
Back with the lemon ricotta pancakes, which are delicious. The Robins still knocking at the door.
Bob will be wondering how the Life of Bryan was down when Bristol is on top.
Sounds like tasty breakfast. No goals despite plenty of action.
Okore called for a shirt pull on Arter. He should have been booked.
Bob will be interested to know that the Cherries have scored more goals in the Second City this season than Villa, who have been second best so far.
I do believe that the Bristols are always on top, mate.
Boom boom!
Barry Wagstaff is on for Mark Little.
I'm not surprised - Villa are rubbish this season and Lambert is barely hanging on to his job.
Cheers Bob.
Two consecutive Cherries corners. O'Kane just wide off the short corner.
Triple X challenge there from Nolan - yellow but could have been red.
It's a full strength Villa side with the exception of Shay Given against a Cherries reserve side. Even old man Ian Harte is doing better than the Villains.
Lee Mason is being biased towards the Prem side , which is not right.
Now Mark Noble is booked for not being that as it's a thuggish performance from the Hammers today
And now Mark Noble is into the book as well.
GOAL !!! SAKHO GIVES THE HAMMERS A LATE LEAD AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY
GOAL! Sakho with the killer blow. Carroll did well to ping a cross over and Sakho buried the header.
0-1 Hammers!
Andy Carroll with a rare assist as Kevin Nolan headed down a long ball to Carroll and he put in a great cross hat was in headed in from close at the far post by Sakho just under the bar
('m back as BC kick off
A loss would be harsh for the Robins , who have outplayed the Hammers most of the match
That goal will break a lot of Bristol City hearts. How will they respond?
Welcome back UWS. You must have just missed the goal.
Bournemouth are the better side at Villa Park but still scoreless
Arsene... even though he knows what happened yesterday...makes many changes
I hate the modern day bosses
That's the first goal I've seen in a match this weekeend
I put it back and saw it
I was listening to the radio on the walk and they are always behind the TV
I didn't hear it on there either
Okore with a last ditch tackle on Kermorgant for a corner off a superb through ball from O'Kane.
Do you think Chelsea's loss was the biggest shock of all time?
Oh - big Matt Smith should have buried that header. It's that marginal difference in quality that's making the big shift here.
it's a full strength Villa side being out played a Cherries reserve side. Lambert did put out a full strength side except for goalkeeper. It's just that the Villains suck.
It definitely ranks up there along with the Colchester win over Leeds in the 70s.
It's one of the biggest shocks, but I can think of others that come close such as Sutton United defeating Coventry or Colchester defeating Revie's leads. They're all massive upsets. How about Hereford vs the Toon?
What was remarkable about the Bradford City win was how good the football was. They didn't just beat them with goals from corners and such. That last goal was the best of the round.
It's 0-0 at the half and boos from Villa fans , who see their near strength side being out played by a Cherries reserve side.
I did notice that on the highlight show. Jose was really perplexed for once. A lovely sight.
Another good headed chance for Matt Smith, who's been the main danger man today.
The Hammers are thru... the top team in the bag for Monday
It's over at Ashton Gate as it's 0-1 to the Hammers, who definitely rode their luck.
Last chance saloon for Bristol City now...no Lee Mason blows up a trifle early.
Bristol City were brave but the Sakho goal was the killer blow. Andy Carroll saved one off the line and supplied the assist for the goal. MOTM.
Now we've got Brighton v. Arsenal. I wonder what kind of side Arsene will run out?
Here's the team news:
Brighton - Stockdale, Bruno, Greer, Dunk, Bennett, Holla, Ince, Calderon, Forster, Baldock, O'Grady. Subs: Hughes, Colunga, Mackail-Smtih, Rea, Chicksen, March, Walton.
Arsenal - Sussudio, Chambers, Koz, Monreal, Gibbs, Flamini, Walcott, Ramsey, Rosicky, Ozil, Giroud. Subs: Mert, Alexis, Caz, Martins, Coq Au Vin, Akpom, Ballerin.
It looks as if both sides are wearing blue shorts - I don't get it?
Arsenal wearing yellow.... because red clashes with white and blue!!
HAVE SOME PRIDE IN WEARING THE RED OF ARSENAL WHEN EVER YOU CAN
I HATE IT
We're away at the Amex Stadium - Wenger doesn't seem to be taking any chances with this line-up.
GOAL! Theo scores within 90 seconds. What a start!
GOAL!!
Theo with a great finish to put them inside the first two minutes
Chris Hughton looks absolutely gobsmacked.
A cross didn't hit the first man and wasn't hit with your eyes closed... are you watching Antonio?
Chambers did so well to get to the by-line and pull one back for Theo. But what a first touch and lashed it home giving Stockdale no chance.
Back for the late one and I missed a goal running an errand as the Gunners are on top early on. Gooner and dad will be pleased.
Oh - Ramsey hit one and it could have gone anywhere. Arsenal in full flow so far.
Another Gunners corner that's headed away. A cross from Gibbs is straight to David Stockdale.
Are United watching on how to attack with pace of movement and ball work... forward too
Brighton trying to work themselves back into this one.
United are still ahead of Arsenal in the table, mate.
Villa take the lead
Watch what's happening on the field
Arsenal are miles better
GOAL !!!! CARLOS GIL GIVES VILLA THE LEAD ON HIS DEBUT AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY. HE GOT PASDT IAN HARTE THEN CUT IN AND SCORED WITH A LEFT FOOTED CURLER IN THE UPPER 90 ON THE BREAK.
Oh - Giroud. on the turn threatened. Out for a corner.
It could be a day for the Premiership sides to get their own back?
Villa had been under a spell of constant pressure then scored a superb goal on the break. That's where the Championship sides lack the quality of top class finishing.
Good noise from the traveling Arsenal fans.
From the Beeb
Wowsers! Pick that one out! Maybe Carles Gil is the saviour after all, as his first goal in English football has the fans inside Villa Park off their seats!
He picks it up on the counter, wide on the right, cuts inside the full-back and then shoots, lofting a curling effort right into the top corner from at least 25 yards. He took it so early, it was inspired stuff.
Paul Lambert blows out his cheeks. What a relief, what a goal, what a signing?
Chris Hughton would love a win ,being a former Spud , which is why Gooner and dad would love a huge Gunners win
Yes, UWS. It was a goal out of the top drawer, but a much better description than I gave. Bob will not be pleased that Ian Harte was the one turned inside and out.
One nil to the Prem team in each match so far.
I notice that Smokey the Bear is back in goal for the Gunners
Paul Lambert should be relieved as his side have been outplayed by a Championship reserve side.
Lambert seems to cling on to that job, somehow.
The double switcheroo from Eddie Howe as Simon Francis is on for Ian Harte and top scorer , Callum Wilson, is on for Kermorgant.
Today it was a goal of the top drawer from a debut boy that he signed. He'll take credit for that , claiming it has been a great signing./
Allan Hutton booked for a foul on Callum Wilson
Walcott should have passed it there
I still don't rate him too much
The free kick from Junior Stanislaus is headed on by Cook, straight to Shay Given.
Oh - Theo should have been able to thread that one through to Rosicky.
I agree, UWS - he's a streaky player. Sometimes brilliant and sometimes really lazy.
I agree. Between the injuries he's never been the player people tipped him to be since the 2006 World Cup.
