Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
250 Comments:
Morning, MUR! Thanks for the excellent posting. It promises to be a super Sunday in the Premiership.
They're off from Upton Park.
Cheers Bob.Good morning Bob. How was the rest of your Saturday and the German Chocolate cake?
The teams out on the turf at Upton Park now:
West Ham - Adrian, Jenkinson, Collins, Tomkins, Cresswell, Noble, Song, Downing, Nolan, Valencia, Carroll.
Hull - McGregor, Bruce, Dawson, Davies, Chester, Livermore, Huddlestone, Meyler, Elmo, Quinn, Aluko.
Hull making a quick start to the match with Aluko streaking down the right wing. Wins a corner.
Sone Aluko gets behind the Hammers defense and has a shot blocked for a corner.
Jake Livermore is tackled by Valencia off a short corner . A waste.
Johnno will be hoping for a Hammers win , which they need to stay up near the European places while Hull City need a win to get out of the drop zone.
Our Saturday evening was great and the German Chocolate cake was spectacular. We actually made it for our birthdays last weekend but I didn't have a chance to post the picture until this one.
Yes - the Hammers have an outside chance of pipping the likes of Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal for one of those Europa League spots.
Bob will be delighted to start his Sunday with David Pleat's words of wisdom. I will try to be a better David.
Oh - Tickle Me Elmo had a big chance there and blew it wide. Brucey's having an aneuryism about it on the sideline.
The Tigers and particularly Sone ALuko as he got down the right and El Mohammedy walked like an Egyptian , but misses a sitter shooting wide of an open goal.
Oh - Cresswell now has a go from distance, swings wide of the post. Good positive opening to this match.
Now the Hammers have a free kick. Taken short by Mark Noble and shot wide by Aaron Cresswell.
Bob would do well not to talk about tickling with Pleat around and the announcer would do well to not irk on Pleat by calling him two silly nicknames in a matter of seconds. That plays into his hands , which is another story.
In the Asian Cup China have defeated North Korea 2-1 in the Communist Derby. Will that be censored?
Pleat talking about a crush on Young Brucey. Really naughty! He's not as attractive nowadays. I wasn't aware that Brian Moore was on the Gils Board of Directors.
McGregor punches over from a corner under pressure from Thompklins
Adrian gets away with a poor clearance. That will not help his case for making it into the Spain squad.
Jela and Abel Hernandez will be out injured for six week. That hurts the Tigers as it will be tough to get goal s in their relegation fight.
With Gareth Bale no longer in England, Pleat has to transfer his randy affections elsewhere.
I wonder if those living in those tower block flats have get-togethers with their mates to watch the match. Seems as if they've got grandstand views of the pitch.
The Tigers have never scored an away Prem goal in January. Not what they want to hear as they desperately need goals.
I would think so. I wonder what the history of that is because I am sure there are plenty of stories to tell during the history of the Hammers football club.,
I have a riddle for Bob. Why can Man United never be promoted as long as LVG is manager.
The fizz has been taken out of his match after such a promising start.
They do indeed. A point today isn't really enough for them as Burnley above them have twice the goals.
Mark Noble booked for a hefty challenge on Fatty.
Pleat said nasty instead of naughty.
My mistake - Hull have twice the goals that Burnley do, as they're both in negatives. Still early and the math brain isn't firing yet. A point would indeed pull Hull out of the drop zone, by my reckoning. And a win would launch them well up to 15th!
Talking about Monkey Boy, Real won 0-3 at Getafe in a local derby as Skippy scored twice and Monkey Boy with the other goal.
Aluko , who has been lively got past Thompkins, but Collins tackled hin for a corner.
Thompkins heads away the corner from the Mighty Quinn.
Curtis Davies fouls Enner Valencia just outside the Tigers box.
The right idea from Ten Downing Street, but it had too much height and not enough curl.
Great solo run but Aluko, but the final pass has been off. A sham,e as the Tigers would have had plenty of scoring chances but for that. Is that the story of the Tigers season.
Skippy and Monkey Boy seems a lethal combination for Real - I don't know why they'd want to trade him for Twilight. Surely there are some decent Spanish keepers around.
I agree with Jon Champion. Fatigue may be a factor for the Tigers after their marathon cup tie vs the Toffees that went to penalties and went down to the two Spanish keepers taking penalties.
Actually, Jon Champions was mentioning that there is a shortage of quality Spanish keepers . Casillas is declining and Real need a good keeper to have any hope of retaining their CL title. I would rather United have De Gea than Monkey Boy
Did you figure out my riddle posted at 8:49?
El Mohammedy walks like an Egyptian and I'm not sure why he was booked as Ten Downing Street was barely touched and went down far too easily.
I just saw on my ISP that Skippy broke up with his girlfriend. I'm sure he'll find a replacement in no time at all.
Pleat talks about a big, deep ball. As if he would know.
I'm sorry that I missed your riddle, mate, but I'm not sure that I get it. Why would United need to be promoted? They're in the top division.
Pleat is back to his saucy worst again today. He must not have had the cold shower this morning.
The answer to the riddle is that promotion is not possible because any thing involving LVG would be a horizontal or lateral move.
Oh - a really scrappy sequence in the Hull box with a Hull player down. The ball was cleared off the line and came off the bar. It's like an L2 scrapfest in there - not a lot of deft quality.
Brucey is down injured as The Tigers are under massive pressure. Valencia had a header come off the post then Cresswell has a header save d by McGregor.
Boom boom!
I'm sure Brucey would have been livid if that had gone in , wiuth his son down with a head injury
Cheers mate. I'm sure UWS would appreciate that riddle.
Fatty has a shot deflected for a corner.
The corner from Fatty is not hefty enough as it's headed away by the first man, then a long range effort is straight to Adrian . Two minutes of stoppage time.
ALuko has a dribble come off of Cresswell for a corner t as he appeared to be a foul. The corner is headed away as James Chester is down, holding his shoulder. Great defending by James Collins.
Lots of players down on the turf today - it's been a rather agricultural contest, more tractor pull than Premiership football match.
That appears to be it for James Chester and Maynor Figueroa is warming up. He will come on for James Chester. That's the last thing Brucey needed.
James Chester is limping off holding his side and Figueroa is replacing him just before the break.
Great description, mate,
It's half time and injury ravegged Hull City are holding the Hammers at 0-0. I wonder if this contest will be decided by the subs.
Back on at Upton Park and Hull have been forced to make another change with Bruce, Jr. unable to continue. Harry Maguire is on in his stead.
Brucey makes another substitution as 21 year old Harry Maguire , signed during the summer from the Evil Blades is on for Young Brucey. That hurts the Tigers as they have lost their starting central defenders due to in jury . The second half is underway
Shot high and wide by Kevin Nolan as Ten Downing Street got behind the makeshift defense and laid it on a plate for Nolan
Oh - Nolan is a whisker away from a century of Premiership goals there.
GOAL !!! ANDY CARROLL GIVES THE HAMMERS THE LAD.,
GOAL! Andy Carroll strikes again!
Great poacher's goal there by Carroll. The shot was merely parried by the keeper and he was in the right place to turn home the rebound. It's great to see him repaying West Ham's patience.
mCGregor could not hold the powerful, Swerving shot from Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll with his predatory instincts , put away the rebound. I guess it was a matter of time before the makeshift defense would fail to hold on.
And James Collins has been replaced by Winston Reid. These defenders really are in the wars today.
James Collins has been substituted due to a thigh strain. I'm not sure who came on, but my guess would be Winnie Reed.
Bob answered that question. Bob's a reliable one.
I do me best, mate.
The Tigers defense has been taking quite a hammering since the start of the second half.
Pleat talked about balls being played to Aluko's feet. Nobody is that well hung.
Valencia is just offside off a superb slide rule pass from Alex Song. He look on when looking at the replay. A reprieve for the Tigers as Valencia surely would have scored.
This is a bruising encounter.
Harry Maguire, typically a central defender has been thrust up front by a desperate Brucey.
I would not expect any differently from these two hard men managers.
Brucey's team desperately need a goal. They've been shut out in ten of the last fourteen matches according to Jon Champion.
Enner Valencia is down to illustrate the point that Bob made.
Jake Livermore wins a corner off of ALex Song.
The corner from Fatty is headed away.
Morgan Amalfitano is on for Mark Noble. He will give the Hammers much more creativity.
According to The Men in Blazers, Brucey's tactics are to shout players names. Come on Harry is a perfect example.
Enner Valencia shots into then side netting . Great defending by Michael Dawson.
GOAL !!! THE HAMMERS GO TWO UP. AMALFITANO SCORES MINUTES AFTER COMING OFF THE BENCH.
GOAL! Nice team goal for the Hammers finished off by Amalfitano.
That would seem like lights out for Hull City. They'll remain in the drop zone this week.
Alex Song won the ball in midfield and found Enner Valencia , who superbly put though Amalfitano to score.
Really? I had no idea that Snoddy as now a Hull City player. I still miss him.
I would think so. I don't see the Tigers coming back. The final roll of the dice for Brucey as Yannick Sagbo is on for Curtis Davies.
GOAL! Downing Street makes it three!
GOAL !!! NOW THIS ONE REALLY IS DONE AND DUSTED AS A GOAL STRAIGHT FROM TEN DOWNING STREET PUTS THE HAMMERS THREE UP.
Stephen Quinn at least produces a save out of Adrian. He had been getting a bit bored.
Song again was the architect of that goal. My how Arsenal miss him.
Alex Song was the architect or should I say conductor behind the two goals scored in a space of three minutes. Thompkins won the ball in defense and let Song do the rest as he noticed the Hull City defense upfield and played a long ball behind the defense to Ten Downing Street and the ball was slotted past the helpless McGregor.
O'Brien on for Tomkins now to shore things up for the Hammers.
The final roll of the dice for Fat Sam as O'Brien is on for Thompkins
Tomkins had a hammy strain apparently. The body count is impressive in this one. I feel like I'm been watching mud wrestling.
Back to your question, Snoddy was signed by Brucey, but has been injured most of the season. He played earlier in the season when results were better. Will he be part of two consecutive relegations when he is much better than that?
Perhaps women's mud wrestling. There's been a bit of aggro.
Bloody Norah!!! Hull City vs Villa. There's a real bore. Will there even be any shots on target?
I wonder if Pleat will call Jon Champion Big John or make such a reference.
Jake Livermore with a tame effort straight to Adrian
Pleat and Jon Champion mention the Hammers Cup tie at Bristol City next weekend. I bet that will be a more difficult match than this one.
Kevin Nolan hit the side of the post from a difficult angle then won a corner.
Harry Maguire heads out the corner from Amalfitano.
Andy Carroll wins a corner.
Taken short by Ten downing Street.
The Hammers will move up to seventh above Liverpool.
David Meyler booked for a foul on Valencia.
A powerful long range by Fatty is not that far off.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
It's over as the Hammers easily defeat the struggling Tigers 3-0.
Next is Citeh vs the Gunners.
West Ham wrap up a comprehensive win and Fat Sam and Brucey enjoy a sportsmanlike handshake.
Now we turn our attention to the big one at the top of the hour. The big news out of the Etihad is that Sergio Aguero has been included in the starting XI. Vincent Kompany also starts, while Edin Dzeko is among the subs. Almost a full strength Citeh side.
The sides out preparing for the match:
Citeh - Hart, Zaba, Kompany, Demi, Clichy, Fernandiho, Fernando, Navas, Silva, Milner, Agüero. Subs: Sagna, Dzeko, Kolarov, Caballero, Lamps, Mangala, Jovetic.
Arsenal - Ospina, Bellerin, Mert, Koz, Monreal, Ramsey, Coq Au Vin, Caz, The Ox, Giroud, Alexis. Subs: Sussudio, Gibbs, Rosicky, Beaker, Theo, Flamini, Chambers.
Wenger not terribly convincing when it comes to dropping Sussudio today.
Teams coming out of the tunnel now. Kate's favorite part of the match is watching the mascots come out with the players.
They're off from the Etihad in chilly Manchester.
Sussudio was dropped last week because Arsene caught him smoking after the match vs Sotton.
Aguero wins a corner and Kos booked as Mike dean played the advantage . Giroud heads out the corner from Navas.
Arsene without a coat on such a chilly day. I wonder if he's been have a pre-match brandy,.
Bob must be wondering what happens if Aguero scores ten goals today
Hoping that Aguero gets crocked again within ten minutes.
Sorry mate. I don't see that happening. I wonder if it will be a goal fest like it was during this fixture last season .
I'm still hoping that Mert will snap into Aguero like a Slim Jim. I can dream.
They complain about the short sleeves and gloves . People like me have circulation problems and may not be cold, but if you don't have good circulation then the gloves will protect your hands.
Are you singing Sussudio or Buddy Holly's Dream? That is definitely a dream
You don't want Kos slamming into him because he's already on a yellow.
Buddy Holly - "Oh, that'll be the day-ay-ay...when Kun gets crocked."
A fairly boring match so far - lots of sideways passing but no real chances as of yet.
Did you see that Men in Blazers is on late tomorrow night?
BOOM BOOM! You're waxing lyrical!
Nice one - I love those guys!
Agreed. I'm a bit surprised as this is normally a high scoring fixture.
Giroud with a diving header not far off from a great cross by Ramsey. The first good chance of the match. It's a corner.
Hart punches away as the ball was bobbling about in the box.
First half chance for Giroud's - Kate's fave - a diving header just deflected out. Resulting corner is punched away by Joe Hart.
Me too. They're on at 11 PM EST tomorrow night . A late time slot.
Kate will be glad to hear that his voice was heard. I'm sure she was shouting for a corner too.
Gooner , dad , and Simon must be pleased with the start.
PENALTY !!! BAD KOMPANY TRIPS OVER SOME NACHOS IN THE BOX AND IT'S A PENALTY FOR THE GUNNERS.
Penalty to Arsenal! Kompany is rusty and he bundled over Monreal. I'd have given an indirect free kick for obstruction but the ref thought pen.
GOAL !!! CAZ SCORES FROM THE SPOT . A WELL PLACED KICK EVEN THOUGH HART GUESSED CORRECTLY.
Hart guesses right but Caz's shot is too good.
GOAL! 0-1 Arse!
I was thinking that a defender of Kompany's experience and quality should know better. You make a good point
Dancing in the streets of Alex!
Ospina must be freezing. He's been a spectator in chilly Manchester.
I know the Gunners are frustrating Citeh, but you would think that they would test Ospina with some crosses given that his hands must be a little numb due to inactivity.
Ospina and Hammers Rodriguez are brother-in-laws, according to Arlo.
Citeh have been really poor in this half. Aguero really looks off the pace.
Aguero wins a Citeh corner.
A deep corner from Navas is headed away. Now the Gunners break.
Not just Aguero, it's been the entire Citeh team. What's going on with them?
Citeh lumping balls aimlessly into their forwards.
Aguero heads well wide.
It's just not their normal strategy. They appear desperate
Ramsey booked for a foul on Aguero.
Did you see who Citeh play in their next Prem match?
Nvaas wins a corner off of Nacho from a nice long diagonal pass from Fernandinho
Nacho heads out the corner.
Bad Kompany , having a mare of a half is booked for a foul on Giroud and shows his frustration.
Now it's Kompany into the book - he's lucky he didn't get a first yellow for the penalty challenge. Not his best outing.
He now receives a lecture from Mike Dean
Giroud heads well wide of the free kick
Bad Kompany will not want to be on the Dean's list today. That would be more appropriate for Bob's students.
A minute of stoppage time.
Coq Au Vin cuts out a pass from Navas for a corner/.
The corner from Navas is headed away and the Gunners are surprisingly one up at the half.
Coq au Vin is livid with his teammates for giving away a late chance. But it's cleared and that's the interval whistled up.
So far, so good for the Arse. 0-1.
A win for the Gunners today would keep them in 5th, a point behind United and two ahead of their North London rivals. A loss for Citeh would have them five points back from Chelski.
The second half is underway
Bob will not be pleased as Jovetic is on for Milner , erasing the LUFC Academy factor.
Aguero has a shot deflected for a corner .Better from Citeh
Navas takes it short to Silva then gets it back as Coq Au Vin heads away his cross.
If Citeh come from behind to win then that sets up a really important match for them at the Bridge in a fortnight. A Citeh win at the Bridge would then throw the PPP table upside down.
Nvas has a shot straight at Opspina is that he punches away. That will warm his palms.
Fernandinho has a hot deflected for a corner off of Mert. The corner is headed away as Ospina struggled to meet the cross.
Citeh turning up the screw. Bob must be working on another tasty lunch.
Alexis has a shot go out for a throw to ruin a great piece of skill as he turned Zaba inside out.
Citeh seem to be trying to turn the screw but Arsenal still look dangerous through The Ox there.
Fernandinho booked for deliberate hand ball.
Fernandinho picks up a needless yellow card through an intentional handball. Silly boy.
I'm not pleased but Jamie looked a wee bit sluggish today. Citeh have been working him like a mule recently.
If Citeh win then they have a nail biter at SB in a fortnight. Will your top spot be in jeopardy?
The cards are flying fast now - Bellerin is the latest culprit.
Bellerin booked for an earlier foul on Silva as Ramsey should have put the Gunners two up , but blasted over with just Hart to beat. Gooner must be cursing that miss.
That looked a fair tackle on Alexis . I would be interested to see the replay
I don't think so - Chelski seem destined to keep the top spot. I don't see them dropping many points from here on in. Strength in depth in the squad and such. The LOB Shield is coming home - I'm already measuring the wall space.
Steve Bould looks really cold sitting next to Arsene.
If Citeh go top then it's advantage Simon. Sound familiar?
OH!!! A pass across the box by Navas and if one of two Citeh players made contact it would have been tied. Corner to Citeh as Nert heads up into the air and Ospina gathers.
It does - but I don't see this Citeh side as as strong or as hungry as last season. They'll be there or thereabouts but I still think I'm safe with Chelski and Diego.
Each side makes a substitution. Lampard on for Fernandinho while Rosicky is on for the Ox.
MLS bound but now turncoat Frankie Lamps now coming on to try to make an impact for Citeh.
Kate thinks Zaba is rather unattractive...and not French.
we should have a good idea in a fortnight. It's an interesting race that I am conceding
You've conceded the title already?!
