THE FA CUP FINAL
One of my favorite days of the year. The memories of my childhood are all based on Cup Finals! The first one that I remember is the 1972 version where there was a battle of the Dahlgren brothers took place. The younger was the happier with a Sniffer Clark diving header!
There was a stretch of time where I missed the Cup Final but now, thankfully, it is on the telly. Of course, Fox won't do as good a job as NBC but I'll take it.
Of course, there the small matter of the PPP to be decided

I heard that that that BBC was having a lot of early coverage so I found a BBC link
First think is Top of the Tops 2
A Hammers song, Blue is the Color. Ozzie's going to Wembley
Hoddle, a Arsenal song... now Everton on Wogan!
Great watching!!
http://cricfree.tv/bbc-one-live-stream
BTW, I have England NZ on the TV!
This is brilliant... I miss the Cup Final songs!!!

Can't wait for the last one!!!
Gazza rapping... he can't talk!!!
Aston Villa will be wearing their traditional claret and blue this afternoon and the Arsenal will be wearing their yellow and blue away kit
Man Utd are the only club to make #1 on the charts!!
Charlton, Edwards, Law and Georgie Best
We're United you can keep the rest
Good morning UWS. I posted a thread not knowing you had. I will delete mine.
My first final was in 1977 when United defeated Liverpool 2-1 with all three goals being scored in five minutes early in the second half.
THE BBC build up still to come
1430-1520 BBC 1: Pointless FA Cup Special. BBC football pundits, including Phil Neville, Robbie Savage and Jermaine Jenas, take part in the quiz, as they try to score as few points as possible by plumbing the depths of their general knowledge to come up with the answers no-one else can think of. Shouldn’t be hard for Savage.
1525-1555 BBC 1: The Road to Wembley. The story of this season’s FA Cup, how the Gunners and Villa booked their places at Wembley and a look back at all the upsets.
1555-1715 BBC1: MOTD LIVE: The build-up begins in earnest with Gary Lineker.
It will be a battle of the Dahlgren brothers in a manner of speaking. Gooner will be going for his beloved Gooners while Bob needs a Villa win to win the PPP Shield.
Morning
Love that 77 Final
The trophy will be presented by Prince William , a Villa fan. The Gooner and Simon will not be best pleased about that.
Love this BBC stuff!
A show called Pointless is on now
Must be some know show but lots of footer celebs on it
Savage been given grief
I did read that about Prince William
Up the Villa
Me too. If the Gunners win then it will be their dozenth win and they will break their tie with United for most FA Cup Final wins. If Villa win then it will be theirfirst win since they cheated in the 1957 Final. They last won fair and square in 1920 when they defeated Hudders 1-0. History is not on their side.
Will it be Simon celebrating with alphabet soup or Bob with an early wedding present celebrating with vanilla soft serve?
They have now overtaken us in Cup Final appearances
It doesn't help that United haven't won the Cup in 11 years and not a final since 2007
Two big games north of the border today
The Scottish Cup Final has Falkirk vs Inverness CT
There is the also the final play off round
Motherwell host Rangers with a 3-1 lead from the first leg
I think today ties the 2009 Final for the latest ever date for an FA Cup Final. If so then today breaks the tie as it's a teatime kickoff and 2009 was at the traditional 3 PM.
Nice stat
I think Motherwell vs Rangers is tomorrow. Surely, Motherwell must be favorites to retain their SPL status.
Cheers mate. I have another one. If the Gunners win then they will retain the FA Cup. I wonder when a team last won the FA Cup two years in a row.
Chelsea in 09 and 10
Shame Motherwell conceded a late goal
A three goal would have been so much better
Arsenal won two in a row in 02 and 03
Before that Spurs in 81 and 82 and 61 and 62
Off for a shower
I'll be back soon
Cheers mate. A perfect time for one.
The ones in 81 and 82 were both in a replay.
Change of plans
I have to bugger off to jump Tom's car
I'll be back
England have the Ton up with no loss at Headingley answering the Kiwis 350
Villa need to win qualify for the EL or else the 7th placed Saints will take the last EL spot. It's a similar situation North of the Border where Falkirk , mid table in the Scottish Championship must defeat Callie, third in the SPL to qualify for the EL. or the fourth placed Saints will take the final EL spot. Callie have already qualified due to their third placed finish.
Falkirk are at a disadvantage , not just because they are a lower division team, but they haven't played a competitive match in four weeks! That was a 0-3 defeat vs Hibs. YIKES!
Soccer net has a heading that reads One day, four trophies. It's a naughty comment as it's really five, but they haven't counted the Scottish Cup Final. The following finals are being played today:
The FA Cup Final, the Scottish Cup Final, Copa Del Rey, Coupe de France, and the DFB-Pokal( German Cup).
I am back from the boys trip but now Im off for a walk
I just got back from a walk with Sparky before it gets too hot to take him.
I am now back for good
My BBC link still going strong
Falkirk have tied it up at Hampden
The Line Ups
Arsenal XI: Szczesny, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey, Ozil, Alexis, Walcott.
Subs. Ospina, Gibbs, Gabriel, Flamini, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Giroud
Aston Villa XI: Given, Hutton, Vlaar, Okore, Richardson, Westwood, Delph (c), Cleverley, Grealish, N'Zogbia, Benteke.
Subs. Guzan, Bacuna, Sinclair, Agbonlahor, Cole, Sanchez, Baker.
It's 1-0 to the Callie in the Scottish Cup Final with a dozen minutes plus stoppage time remaining. Now Callie have gone two up
England lost their captain Cook for 75
England are 179 for 1
Sorry . Ten man Callie now lead 2-1.
North of the Border.. Inverness have retaken the lead in the 85th minute
They are down to ten men!
Falkirk had tied it up in the 79th
Incredible, absolutely incredible! Ten-man Inverness re-take the lead following a lightning counter attack as Falkirk keeper Jamie MacDonald parries a shot and James Vincent is there to thunder the ball home.
Neither team has what you would you would call a cup tradition . This is Callie's first ever final and will be their first ever season in Europe. Falkirk last won the Cup in 1957 as did Villa. Falkirk were losing finalists in 1997 and 2009. This is their second time being in the final as a lower division team, also doing so in 1997. The most ever for a Scottish Cup Final?
Just got a link for the SCF
4 minute of 5 added
96th minute
Super Cally go ballistic Falkirk are atrocious!!
IT IS OVER!!!
Arsene Wenger will tie a record if the Gunners win the Cup today. He will be tied for Aston Villa's George Ramsay, not Aaron or Sir Alf, for most Cup wins by a manager with half a dozen. George Ramsay won six as manager of Villa. That means their only other win was by cheating.
Congratulations to Callie for their first ever Scottish Cup Final win. That means the Saints get the final EL place in Scotland. Will that be true South of the Border too?
The main Fox channel starts in a couple of minutes
Only 30 min of pre game... NBC would have had an hour
Two out of three of Falkirk's Scottish Cup Final defeats have been as a second tier team. They finished fifth this season as they did in the second tier in 1997.
That may be a good thing because NBC would have had an hour of quality while FOX will have half an hour of rubbish.
Brad Guzan hasn't had it spot back in the Villa team since his howler against Citeh!
He hasn't been playing in the Cup anyway but that mistake was very costly for him...lucky it was that expensive to Villa who still avoided the drop... just
Villa haven't won the Cup since they beat the Mighty Busby Babes in the 57 Cup Final... of course they broke the jaw of United's keeper and United played with 10 men and an outfield player in the net
They did play in the last ever Cup Final at the Old Wembley
Calamity James dropping a cross for Chelsea to win
Fox show starting
NBC would be at Wembley... FOX... in LA
Wonder who will be on the mic.. hopefully not that crazy american guy
Let's hope it is Martin Tyler
This Saturday London for the big match
Next Saturday off to Berlin
Brad Freidel is at the stadium
Fox now talking about the FIFA debacle l
BBC going to Chile to see the Sanchez story
Talk about rolling back the years. Shay Given will be playing in his first FA Cup Final since 1998 when he played for the Toon against none other than the Gunners , who won 2-0 and won the double. That's seventeen years between Cup Final Appearances. Surely that must be a record.
Given was on the subs bench in the 99 Final. Steve Harper was the Toon keeper in that final. Talk about rolling back the years.,
Super Cally lift the Cup
I like that they did it the old way
The captain came up and lifted it... they didn't wait for the whole team to get their medals
That's how it should be done
Now each player is holding the cup aloft
Captain used to bring it down the stairs.. I don't mind everyone getting a chance... I just don't like them all up there and then picking it up
Afternoon, boys - happy Cup Final Day!
Excellent post, UWS - thanks for getting us going. This is still one of favorite days of the year, too. I've got some buddies coming over for the big match, so I may be in and out during the match.
Given was in goal for the 98 Final for the Toon against... Arsenal!
I agree. They should do it that way.
Good afternoon, Bob. Great to have you on board.
England are now 194 for 1
Lyth hits his maiden test century
England don't want to lose another wicket
The next in is Ian Bell
Jonathan Jackson: Here's hoping we don't lose another wicket this evening, because as a Villa fan, Bell's mind is going to be elsewhere!
Correct. I posted that about Given. Seventeen years between Cup Final appearances. That must be a record. He was on the subs bench for the 99 Final.
Prince William, a big Villa fan, will present the trophy this evening
Welcome Bob
Correct. Gooner and Simon will not be best pleased about that or they may be if the Gunners win and they know that Prince willy will be pissed.
BBC has the interview Gary's interview with Prince Willy
He says that Harry claims to be an Arsenal fan
Lineker gives Prince Wil a baby Villa onesy
Get to the stadium Fox
Get the atmosphere
Kenny Dalglish was in charge when Shay Given last played in an FA Cup Final while FOX's Warren Barton was supposedly providing defensive cover at left back.Shaka was on the subs bench as was John Barnes. Current assistant , Steve Bould was on the subs bench for the Gunners. Dave Seaman was in goal for the Gunners while Alex Manninger was the sub keeper. That was Arsene's first Cup Final win . will he tie Villa's George Ramsay with half a dozen today?
Abide With Me about to be sung
Supporters of each team that made the 3rd round are on the field to sing it
Fox on commercial
Sounds great... bloody FOX!!
The following year was a Ruud awakening for Given as he was named the sub keeper by his gaffer. He was on the bench along with a certain Warren Barton.
They are bloody useless. Could you imagine a full hour of this rubbish?
Boy I wish Fox were showing this
Sounds fantastic... this is what the US should be showing to show the passion!!!
Villa have won the League Cup five times and have been runners up three times since their last Fa Cup win. They have only been to one FA Cup final since then
Randy Learner is here... so is the Cup
Teams in the tunnel
Fox not even showing highlights of Abide with Me
Teams coming out
Didn't Calamity James gift us the Cup in 1996 ? That's two Cup finals his team lost 1-0 thanks to him.
Prince Willie is not making it obvious that he's a Villa fan as he shakes hands with Gunners players in their lucky yellow and blue kit.
Now the national anthem
FOX is slightly ahead of my BBC link.
I am going to keep it going for the half time stuff and post game
Did the Prince sing God Save my Grandma
Back from the loo, so I am fully equipped to watch the Cup Final
I don't know. I was in the loo.
Yes - I'm all about the claret and blue this afternoon. I would have loved to have seen Matt win the Shield this year but now that it's down to me and Simon, I want that Shield back!
Im moving to the living room... closer to the TV
I'll come back and comment often
Another record. If the Gunners win today then Wenger will have twice won the FA Cup in consecutive seasons. I think that would be a first
They're off from Wembley.
Great defending by Okore on Theo.
George Ramsay won half a dozen Cups as Villa manager, but none in consecutive seasons. The first was in 1887 and the last in 1920. That's 32 years between the first and last cup. Arsene could emulate that feat in just over half the time.
Technically , this is the latest ever FA Cup Final. The 2009 final was also played on the 30th , but kickoff was at 3 PM .
Will this be Beneteke's last match for Villa? There are rumors that he could be headed to Anfield in a trade with Lambert plus cash
Team switched ends before kick off
Surprising that they won't attack their own fans in the second half
Beneteke is flagged offside off a slide rule pass.
A feeling of deja Vu for Arsene ? The opposing keeper may look familiar!
A pass from Caz took a wicked deflection off of Richardson for the first corner of the match. Beneteke headed away then Okore concedes another
Kos heads wide off the next corner as he eluded Okore.
A tackle from the LUFC academy results in the Gunnes third corner that is taken by Ozil and headed away.
Arsenal getting a lot of corners
Now a a free kick... nasty by Benteke but no card
England do lose another wicket... Bell must be pissed!!
Terrible delivery
The free kick was headed away. It was about a foot outside the box. Stupid by Beneteke.
SU SU Sudio punches away a cross from Richardson on a Villa break.
Come on Villa
Get your finger out
They do break but punched clear
The BBC commentator just doesn't sound right
It's not Coleman, Motson or Davies
Family loyalties are split today as they were in the 1972 Final as Bob is rooting against Gooner and dad's Gunners
The Clever Boy does get the first card
Great save by Given
Not so Clever Boy earns a stupid booking for a foul on Monreal and Given superbly saves a header from Kos off a training routine from a cross by Alexis.
Fred says that Given could be giving the Gunners the full Monty.Do you agree with Fred?
Nearly an OG by OKore as he cuts out a pass from Bellerin for another Gunners corner.
United haven't been to the final since 2005 , yet two former United rejects play for Villa in today's final
Just wide from the Arse
The Gunners are well on to[
Villa fell behind to Pool in the semi but were not being outplayed
This has not started the same way
Of course, Arsenal were being crushed and two down last season... and won
United did make the 07 Final and lost to Chelsea... undeservedly
Ramsey... over the bar
Oh dear with the Villa defenders
OH!!! Ramsey blazed over with just Given too beat. It started as Delph showed his poor foundation from the LUFC Academy, coughing up possession.
Thanks for the reminder. Absolutely correct . I forgot because I have tried to erase that from my memory.
WOW!!! Almost a quarter of the match has been played. It seems like it started just seconds ago. What a fast match
Theo could have been through , but poor control let him down
I would say that we lost the last two finals undeservedly and would have won by a record score in 2004, but for brilliant goalkeeping.
Walcott with a great chance... great block by the ex red devil
OH!!!! Theo had a shot blocked by a combination of Given and Richardson from close range off a great run and pass.
I agree with you
Both of those should have been won
Caz is fouled by Westwood.
The FA Cup will be rebranded next season as the Emirates FA Cup... hate it
Theo is offside as he was about to shoot.
Which may be at the Emirates!
Villa not creating much... All Gunners
Will they regret not scoring when they are on top
we would have won in '95 , but for a brilliant performance from Heavy Nevie. we should have won that too and that would have been a hat-trick of consecutive FA Cup wins. The last one we deservedly lost was in 1979
The BBC website has a couple of ways to follow the match
The normal text updates and comments from the public with tweets and texts
wonder if it's going to be one of those days for the Gunners. That's Bob's main hope.
We fought back so well in that one but I agree the Arse deserved to win
Delph , showing us what he learned at the lUFC Academy as he coughs up possession in midfield then fouls Alexis on the break. Lucky to only get a lecture from fellow Yorkie, John Moss.
That's a perfect description. If it was a boxing match they would have shaded it by a few points.
Bob will celebrate with vanilla soft serve if he wins. will he sing Su Su Sudio or Smoking in the Boy's room?
Villa are playing dirty!
Another nasty foul... yellow for Hutton
Naughty by former Spud, Alan Hutton and deseervedly booked for that foul on Alexis.
Richardson clears for a Gunensr corner.
Given drops the ball from the corner, but it's hacked away . His first error in this match, but the old man gets away with it.
Not sure if that has been mentioned before but Rio has announced his retirement today
Great career for the ex Red Devil, White and Hammer
There have been a few rash challenges, but for the most part , it's been a fair match, in my opinion.
He never won the FA Cup in his trophy-laden career
He was suspended from Football for the FA Cup win in 04
Caz is down injured off an awkward landing in a challenge with Westwood.
I saw that on soccernet. I agree. that he had a superb career. A shame that he never won an FA Cup winner's medal.
Too little, too late, Gerry. I have twice mentioned that this is the latest ever Cup Final
Delph, of the LUFC Academy, makes it hat-trick of Villa bookings.
This final reminds a little of the 2000 final when Villa lost to Chelsea.
GOAL!!!
THEO RIFLES THE BALL IN THE NET!!
GOAL !!! THEO BLASTS THE GUNNERS INTO THE LEAD FIVE MINUTES BEFORE HALFTIME
It all started from a crossfield ball from Coq Au Vin to Theo, who got past the already booked, Hutton. He found Monreal, whose cross was headed down by Alexis and blasted home by Theo.
What has the world come to
FA Cup on network television
ESPN home page leads with the Cup Final
Absolutely. it was matter of when , not if.
Now all footie needs is to shake itself of a Blatter infection and all will be well or at least much better.
England lose two quick wickets
Richardson tackles Theo for a Gunners corner.
Beneteke chests away the corner then cleared by Grealish
We really need a game of two halves if Villa have any chance of winning the Cup
As things stand, Simon looks set to be the first ever person to retain the PPP Shield. Sorry Bob.
Caz wins a corner off of Richardson
Two minutes of stoppage time./
Agreed, but I don't see that happening.
Will Agbon be a halftime sub?
He could go on for Insomnia.
Wrong pass by Delph!!
Half time
All Gunners
Steve will be a happy chappy
Not so much Bob
The Gunners are one up at the half where they have run all over Villa.
So will Simon.
What will Sherwood do
He will have to change Villa's tactics. he may have to go with an extra striker by bringing on Gabby Agbon in place of Insomnia, who has been completely useless.
Wenger went nine years between FA Cup wins . George Ramsay twice went eight years between FA Cup wins. I guess it pays to be patient with managers
Teams are out for the kick off but Fox on commercial
They about to kick off.... players waiting for the kick off... finally Fox joins
We're off
The second half is underway
Fox aren't going to show the trophy presentation !!!
They are going to FOX SPORTS 2!!!
IDIOTS
They made it just in the nick of time.
No changes made... that is a surprise
They are, but at least we can see it. We're lucky just to be able to do that
What happens if it goes into extra time... going put that on FS2??
I guess Tim Sherwood figures that if it stays 1-0 Villa can tie it up on the break. I don't see tat happening.
That's a good question. Stupid FOX probably didn't plan that one.
WHAT A ROCKET BY SANCHEZ
TWO NIL GUNNERS
GOAL !!! ONE FROM THE TOP DRAWER AS ALEXIS PUTS THE GUNNERS TWO UP WITH A LONG RANGE ROCKET OFF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BAR. GIVEN DID NOT STAND A CHANCE.
I think this one is done and dusted.
NASCAR is on next... can't miss drivers putting pedal to the metal and turning left... over and over and over again
Next goal will be crucial.. a Villa goal and game on
An Arsenal goal... put the ribbons on the Cup
The goal came out of nothing as the possession started deep in the Gunners half and twenty passes later a deflected pass from Theo broke to Alexis, who fooled two defenders and scored with rocket.
That reminds me of a trivia question
What is at every Cup Final and NEVER used?
The loser's ribbons
I don't see Villa scoring. Has Su Su Sudio even had a save to make today?
Ball in the net again
But offside
WHAT A GREAT SAVE TO START
Theo is offside as his close range effort is saved by Shay Given then the rebound is put away, but disllowed
Nice statement about the loser's ribbons. It's true. The NASCAR description could describe that goal by Alexis.
Sanchez to score again?
Two goals at Wembley for Chile
Two goals at Wembley in the semi against Reading
Two goals in Final against Villa???
He loves the wide open spaces at Wembley.
Villa taking too long to get it in the box or shoot!!
Have you GIVEN up on Villa winning the FA Cup this year?
