Mexico v. USA Live!
Evening, chaps! I'm just home from a beautiful day out with Kate at Allegany State Park and am settling in to watch the USA v. Mexico Confederations Cup qualifier tonight. If you're around and watching, drop on by, won't you?
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Mexico lineup: Moises Muñoz, Hector Moreno, Rafa Marquez, Diego Reyes, Miguel Layun, Andres Guardado, Hector Herrera, Paul Aguilar, Raul Jimenez, Oribe Peralta, Javier Hernandez
Good evening Bob. I'm here to join you for the Big One.
They're playing the Mexican National Anthem .
Now the Star Spangled Banner.
It's usually a partisan Mexican crowd , but this time both teams seem to have an equal number of fans. It's a fantastic atmosphere at The Rose Bowl.
Both teams are opting for experience.
Evening, mate - this is a biggie. Great atmosphere in the Rose Bowl, but you're right that it's heavily Mexican supporting.
Paul Aguilar , from El Salvador, gets this match underway.
Mexico gets us underway at a sold out Rose Bowl - come on, you Yanks!
What an atmosphere!
Absolutely electric - I cannot believe that we're living at a time when Americans care this much about football.
Chicharito about a mile offside there - you'll be familiar with that.
I never would have imagined this when I was a student at LHS.
I still don't understand that Fox predilection for having the Doc comment from the sideline. What's the point of that?
I've seen it so often that it seems second nature to me. Harry Kane seems to be taking lessons from him.
Mexicans with the early pressure - we need to settle it in this hothouse atmosphere.
Beasley looked like he handled that one after completely missing the header.
I don't either. Since when does an a supervisor of officials commentate from the sideline?
Chicha did well to beat the offside trap. I wish he did that more often at United.
The Yanks seems almost intimidated by this partisan crowd.
Horrible cross there from Fab Johnson.
Fabian Johnson with a cross nearly across the border.
They do look rattled.
Donald Trump had that cross from Fab Johnson deported!
Bugger!!!!
Chicha taps home the Mexican opener. It was coming.
0-1 El Tri
GOAL !!! CHICHA GIVES EL TRI THE LEAD WITH A TAP IN FROM TWO YARDS OUT
That was a promising move but Jozy was too static to take advantage.
The U.S. seem stunned by the Mexican movement off the ball and were sliced apart as Aguilar received the ball back off a back heel from Perralta then passed across the goal for Chicha to easily tap in to a wide open goal, his first ever against the Yanks.
Got to the by-line but useless cross well over Dempsey's head.
Donald Trump will say that the U.S. defense left the border wide open
Beasely makes a run down the left and is fouled by Aguilar by the touchline.
GOAL !!! GEOFF CAMERON HEADS IN THE FREE KICK FROM BRADLEY. A TEXTBOOK CROSS.
GOAL! The US are back in it with a super header from Geoff Cameron. Great delivery from Bradley.
1-1!
The goal quieted the crowd a little.
Naughty by Jozy on Raffa Marquez in midfield.
I can't really fault the Mexican keeper on that one - the center back just fell asleep as Cameron ghosted in. Totally his fault.
We need another to shut them up permanently.
A little clumsy by Matt Besler on Chicha.
More nervous moments for the US there - this is a cracker!
I agree. Raffa Marquez should take a look at himself instead of Moises Munoz, who was totally blameless for the goal. As a veteran leader, he should know that this doesn't help morale in such a vital match
I agree. I was expecting a cautious approach by both teams. I'm pleasantly surprised.
Paul Aguilar is booked for a rugby style hold on Kyle Beckerman.
I'm back with a neat gin and tonic. Are you enjoying a beverage tonight, mate?
Guzan gets away with some bizarre keeping. He drops a cross , it rolls out of the box , then he runs out of the box to make an excellent slide tackle.
Yes. I am stealing a Rolling Rock from Elizabeth. You made a great choice.
Brad Guzan comfortably saves a long range effort from Guardado.
Lovely - enjoy it, mate. As long as it isn't a Modelo. Trump wouldn't approve.
Besler did well to break up that attack after Beasley coughed up the ball.
Then Trump isn't knowledgeable about Ales. Modelos are excellent and Dos Equis are decent. Iv'e had both , to the dismay of Trump.
Agreed. Chicha took lessons from Overran.
Trump wants to deport you, mate. ;-)
Half an hour gone and this one is beautifully poised.
LOL! Where would he deport me. Somewhere where he would say" YOU'RE FIRED?"
Agreed. After a strong start from El Tri, this one is even Steven. It could go down to the wire.
Oh - Bradley was in there but shanked his shot wide. He'll want that one back.
OH!!! Bradley drags an effort just wide. That was a great chance after a nice run and pass from Clint.
A massive scrum now after that last attack. Guzan took offense at Jimenez sliding in on him when the whistle had already gone.
Yellow cards all around.
Yellow cards all around.
Proof that this is a U.S vs Mexico match as a fight breaks out. Chicha was flagged offside and Jimenez slid into Brad Guzan intentionally and the big Villa keeper threw him a right hook to show how he felt about it. Paul Aguilar quickly diffused the situation.
Jimenez was booked . I'm not sure if anyone else was. If not then Guzan is a lucky boy.
Perralta heads wide from a difficult angle .
Ah - Beasley had a chance to pick out someone but he merely hit the keeper Munoz.
Nice slide rule pass from Bradley to Beaseley, , whose pass was too close to Moises Munoz.
Naughty by Herrera on Beckerman.
OH!!!! Jozy should have given the U.S. the lead. Great cross from Zardes on Jozy shoots over from six yards out.
Hector Moreno fouls Jozy just outside the box as he was about to go through on goal and Moreno is booked. Nice spin move by Jozy
Oh - nearly a second goal there off a Bradley set piece. We look really dangerous from those.
Munoz pushes away the free kick from Bradley that was about creep in at the near post.
Jozy hacked Aguilar there and the Mexican bench is incensed. No card.
Jermaine Jones fouls Aguilar and Ferretti, the interim Mexican coach wants a card. Not given.
A minute of stoppage time.
It's 1-1 at the end of an electrifying first half.
Our old LHS friend Brett Thompson is complaining about Clint Dempsey on Facebook - he has been largely anonymous.
We're back on for the second half now. The Mexicans are keeping the US boys waiting.
He has been pretty quiet. I was expecting more from Clint.
It's about Bloody Time that the Mexicans come out of the tunnel.
The second half is underway
Both teams seeking a trip to Russia With Love.
Brilliant save by Guzan from the restart. That was a dicey moment for sure.
OH!!! Mexico nearly took the lead as Guzan saved at the feet of Miguel Jimenez after a horribly sliced U.S. attempt a clearance.
Let's hope the US keep from being shaken, not stirred.
Beaseley clears a scoped pass from Jimenez for a Mexican corner. The U.S clear the corner after frantically blocking two Mexican shots.
Agreed. I wonder if the gamesmanship affected their start to the second half.
Guardado has a shot blocked for a Mexican corner.
The corner from Herrera is headed out by Beaseler for another Mexican corner.
The US defend two successive corners well.
Great shot by Jozy but Dempsey had wandered offside.
The corner from Guardado is cleared and the U.S. break . A great save by Munoz from Zardes, but the offside flag is raised.
Sorry. Jozy , not Giosy had the shot.
Beckerman picks up a yellow card for a nasty one on Peralta.
Beckerman is booked for barging into Perralta.
The free kick is headed away and Guzan easily gathers the loose ball.
Zardes just fails to prevent a corner to Mexico.
The corner from Herrera is headed away and a foul is called
Jimenez flops in the box looking for something - nothing doing.
That looked a foul by Beaseler on Jimenez. Nothing called. was that a dive?
Oh - Chicha misses a total sitter - you'll remember that from his days at OT.
OH!!!! A pass from Jimenez across the box was intended for Chicha in a similar position that he was in for the first goal, but completely missed the ball this time. A let off for the U.S.
Yes. He missed one a s recently as August. That was the final straw for LVG. . I've seen it what seems like a million times.
Ouch! Clash of heads there between Jones and Aguilar. Both should be able to continue.
Will this one go to extra time and/or penalties? Yes - the commentator just announced that.
Guardado with a shot well over and halfway back to his club in Mexico.
Correct. If this tied then it goes to ET and pens. That would mean that this match ends early Sunday morning your time.
I'll be staying up - Kate is busy making some delicious blondies right now. Can't wait!
Jozy has a shot deflected for a corner.
Sounds delicious. Those will definitely help you through a late night match
Moises Munoz looks dazed as he punches away the corner and his head lands in the side of Jozy. He seems to be okay
The announcer just stated that Moises Munoz grew up in the Bay area and that his parents still live near San Jose.
Beaseley got lucky as he misjudged a lofted pass , but Chicha handled it.We didn't see that OT. He has added that to his repertoire.
Great tackle by Cameron on Guardado that leads to a corner.
Jimenez heads wide off the corner from Herrera.
Clint got the ball after a nice midfield tackle by Jones , but took too long to shoot and was tackled by Hector Moreno.
Oh dear - Dempsey had a chance there to dish it off and he ran into a Mexican wall instead.
High and wide by Jones as the shot was deported back to Mexico by Donnie Trump
They finally built a wall? It's been talked about for years
Phew - Jimenez shoots just wide.
Rafa Marquez coming off now. Arturo Rivas on for his Mexico debut.
Just wide by Jimenez. Now the first substitutions with about a quarter of an hour remaining. Arturo Rivas is on for Raffa Marquez.
What a time to make a debut!
A long shot from Bradley is well over after Clint failed to scale the Mexican Wall yet again. Keep Trying!
Great tackle by Beaseler on Perralta as he had to defend a teasing cross.
Yedlin has been a standout all night.
Jones is called for a foul on Chicha . It looked a fair tackle.
Another Mexico change - Guardado coming off and Gomez on.
A free kick from the training ground goes all wrong and the U.S cleared,
Mexico's two big name players have been replaced.
The Gooner may not be as big a fan of Yeltsin as others are.
Nope - he doesn't care for him.
No great clearance by Yeltsin, who looked like Mr. Potato Head with that clearance.
Yedlin took a piece out of Moreno there on the way through.
Yletsin overran the ball and was guilty of a horrible foul on Hector Moreno. He looked Au Grautin on that challenge and on that run.
Bradley coughed up the ball to Chicha and then tracked back to foul him - yellow.
Bradley is booked for a foul from behind on Chicha, who attempted a counter.
Another good chance goes a-begging. Bradley with a cute chip at the end of a great move. Well wide.
Bradley chips well wide after a nice U.S. possession.
Great clearance there by Besler and three minutes of stoppage time are announced.
Three minutes of stoppage time as it's frantic defending from the Yanks and the Mexicans wanted a penalty, claiming hand ball on Beaseler
Ball to hand for me there.
It looks as if the Yanks got away with one there.
Mexico finishing the stronger side. Jurgen has got to go to his bench for extra time - there are several players who are gassed.
Aguilar is high and wide with that angled shot.
I agree. The U.S are struggling to stay in this match.
And we're on to extra time.
This one is going to ET. It's 1-1 .
Early attack in extra time comes to nothing for Bradley.
Et has started and Bradley has a shot deflected straight to Munoz.
Better from the US in this period so far.
Rivas , the debut boy, with an effort halfway back to his home town. That's quicker than any deportation Trump would have imagined.
Great save by Guzan and Besler cleared up. Phew!
Chicha puts Perralta thorugh and his shot is fumbled by Guzan then Beasler clears for a corner that is headed away
Trump's gone to bed now - he's tired.
What a hopeless ball from Dozy.
A chance for a U.S counter and Jozy gifts possession back to El Tri
A chance for a U.S counter and Jozy gifts possession back to El Tri
Guerrez into the book for that hack on Yedlin.
Yedlin leads a U.S. counter and is fouled from behind by Guevez, who is booked for that. Munoz gathers the free kick that is crossed in.
Bugger!!!!
Peralta makes it 2-1 El Tri. Total breakdown at the back.
GOAL !!!! PERRALTA GIVES EL TRI THE LEAD.
Again - it was Beasley who was caught out with the ball over the top to Aguilar. That's been the problem all night.
thE MOVE STARTED WITH A THROW from Munoz and about twenty passes later Aguilar lofted a pass wide to the right for Herrrera , who passed to the unmarked Perralta, who scored easily as he was unmarked in the six yard box.
The final roll of the dice from both managers as Jesus Corona is on for Chicha and Bobby Wood is on for.Jozy
I think Jurgen has one roll remaining.
I think Jurgen has one more move to make.
I think Wondo is about to come on.
Mexico just ticking time off the clock now.
That might work - we need some fire power.
Beaseley bails out Beaseler , who was caught out yet again.
It's HT of ET.
EL TRI lead 2-1.
Mexico to get us going again in this final period of extra time.
The second half of ET is underway
Fifteen minutes for the Yanks to send this to pens.
The game is getting really stretched out now. The crowd giving the Mexicans the "Ole" treatment.
Corona shoots an effort well wide.
GOAL !!! CLINT MAKES IT DESMOND . WAY HAY!
GOAL!!!!!!!
Bobby Wood with the killer finish!
2-2!
Tidy finish from the youngster after a lovely ball in from Yedlin.
Sorry. My mistake. Who has Wood. It's Bobby , who ties it up from a superb through ball from Yedlin.
Will Jurgen still want to bring on Wondo? What did Gooner think of that nice through ball from Yedlin?
That question was just answered as Brad Evans came on for Fabian Johnson.
That changed everything in Jurgen's mind. So it's Brad Evans on instead of Wondo.
U.S. fans are making themselves heard as Mexican fans have been silenced.
Corona is flagged offside. That was a close call.
It's now officially Sunday morning in the Eastern Time Zone.
Great run for once by DeMarcus but Bradley was too unselfish - he should have shot.
OH! Beasley made a nice run, but the return pass from Bradley was well overcooked.
It is - happy Sunday!
Bradley is tripped by Herrera just outside the D
Great free kick opportunity now for the US.
Cheers. I'll be watching the match from Warsaw in the afternoon.
Bugger - Dempsey drills it into the wall. He's been unusually poor tonight.
Into the wall by Clint then the offside flag is raised.
Jermaine Jones fouls Jimenez from Behind. A late chance for EL Tri.
Bugger! Aguilar burns Beasley once again.
BUGGER !!!! PAUL AGUILAR VOLLEYS MEXICO INTO A LATE LEAD AFTER A FREE KICK FROM HERRERA WAS HEADED AWAY
Tremendous technique from Aguilar there.
Mexico now lead 3-2 as Latun lobbed in pass after the free kick weas headed away and as Bob stated, Beasely was burned and Aguilar took advantage with a great finish.
Oh - just wide from Cameron there.
Two minutes of stoppage time - this has been epic match.
