Back at it in the Premiership!
After a particularly long and irrelevant international break, we're finally back at it in the Premiership this morning. We start with Aston Villa v. Chelski, two teams who have had disappointing seasons. Villa start their first match since parting ways with Remi Garde, while Chelski have come into Villa Park with an experimental new side. After that one, we've got Arsenal v. Watford at 10am. Join me for all of the Premiership action here on the LOB this morning.
155 Comments:
Since Villa are dead and buried, it's time for Premiership sides to have a good look at their first team, in case they want to pick their bones at the end of the season. Which players might entice other Premiership managers? Will Brad Guzan, for example, be playing in the Prem next season?
Chelski line up with new recruit from the NY Red Bulls Matt Miazga playing center back alongside Branislav Ivanovic. We'll see if he's up to the pace of the Prem.
Hiddink can also call on Alexandre Pato, the enigmatic Brazilian who has washed up on the Chelski bench after a disappointing season in Italy.
The tabloids are full of pictures of Villa players such as Micah Richards enjoying a debauched international break in Dubai. Villa fans are not best pleased with their behavior.
Teams in the tunnel now at Villa Park:
Aston Villa: Guzan, Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Cissokho, Westwood, Gana, Gil, Sanchez, Ayew, Gestede.
Subs: Okore, Bacuna, Sinclair, Veretout, Bunn, Lyden, Grealish.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Miazga, Baba, Fabregas, Mikel, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek, Kenedy, Remy.
Subs: Begovic, Oscar, Falcao, Alexandre Pato, Traore, Matic,
Clarke-Salter.
Referee: Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire)
And the home side get us underway at Villa Park.
Chelski have an early corner now - cleared out.
And now a free kick given away by Hutton.
Ruben Loftus Cheek is having a good time of it out wide right in his second start in the Premiership.
Pedro tries to curl one into the top corner - not too far away.
Miazga has acquitted himself well so far in Chelski's backline.
Morning Bob,
How are you mate? I am here for a bit before I have to take Jon somewhere but I will be back for the 10 o'clocker. I won't be around for tomorrow's matches because I have my fantasy baseball draft
Brighton take the lead against Burnley in a top of the table clash
Villa fans giving their side some ironic "Ole" chaats now - very droll.
Still no Pato for the blues... why did they bring him in?
Morning, mate - how have you been. Thanks for joining me. MUR is off this morning on Math Club duty.
I don't get it either. Hiddink is certainly resting players today - why not try him out?
Got a nice link going for SS
Jeff must be a happy chappy. Hartlepool are on a long run of wins and are far away from trouble
Here comes Pato!! Who came off?
Falcao on the bench!
Looks like Loic Remy limped off injured - I didn't see it either.
ONE NIL THE BLUES... BLACKS
GOAL! Loftus Cheek opens the scoring at Villa Park for Chelski. It has been coming.
Fairly simple goal. The ball was spread to Azpi who whipped in a cross. Loftus-Cheek all on his own slotted home a deflected effort past Big Brad.
0-1!
Unbelievable fall for the Villa
I could go for a spot of crispy duck from the local Chinese for lunch.
Would you like United to pick up any of these Villa players at the end of the season? Will any Premiership sides plump for any of them?
Lost my link
Stuns me how players that get relegated think they are too good for the Championship but they're the ones that got relegated from the Premier League!!
Two games coming to half time in the Championship
Blackburn 1 Preston 2
Brighton 1 Burnley 1
The Seagulls just retook the lead
Well, there may be some players that are good enough to play at the lower reaches of the Prem and are too expensive for Championship sides to afford.
Fab fouls again just after a booking... he survives
Lucky boy.
Are you guys supposed to get any snow this weekend?
We are supposed to get a couple of inches
We havne't had a big storm at all
10.3 inches total all winter!!
BTW, I don't give a flying poop about El Classico today!!!
Pato was not happy with his teammate Rahman who had a chance to play a square ball to him.
Nor I - I'll be running some errands and cooking a squash casserole for a party later tonight.
Off to take Jon
I'll be back mate
New caretaker manager Eric Black is on a hiding to nothing with this lot.
Cheerio, mate!
Oh - Loftus Cheek nearly put Chelski two up!!
Chelski have a penalty now! Pato brought down by Sissokho there.
And Pato will take it.....
And slots it home easily. His first goal for the Blues!
0-2!
Back for the second half just in time to see Pato and Pedro combine beautifully to score Chelski's third.
Villa's fans that turned out today really deserve better than this abject performance.
Chelski are 0-4 inside an hour!
Pato did the damage again, drawing a good save out of Guzan, but Pedro was able to slot home from a tight angle. And then went off to kung fu kick the corner flag.
Jack Grealish replaces Gil, who was poor today. Bacuna also replacing Carlos Sanchez.
Immediate impact from Grealish who whipped a great ball across. No one on the end of it.
Now Grealish has gone down in the box - nothing from the ref. But Grealish is trying to take on Chelski single-handedly.
I am back... how are Villa so bad?? Watch United draw with them at OT in a couple of weeks and LVG will be happy with the performance!
No goal line technology in the Championship... and Burnley have a goal not counted because of it
Still 2-1 Brighton
Got my link up again
Justice has been served... Burnley do get an equalizer.... Desmond after 5 minutes of added time
Missed the start of the pre-game today
Is Rebecca off for good until the end of the season? Did she have her baby
Rahman nearly poked home Chelski's fifth goal.
Villa down by four and now down to ten
Hutton with a second yellow
Again, did the ref really need to show the card
And now it's got worse for Villa - Alan Hutton is off for two yellows, the second for a studs up challenge.
I agree with you - this side shouldn't be quite this bad. They're nearly as abject as the Derby side that only got 11 points.
Into stoppage time now - blow up, ref!
That's it
Off for walkies
I'll be back
That's that - Villa have succumbed again. Wretched from them; professional from Chelski.
Enjoy your walkies!
Next up we've got Arsenal v. Watford. The Gunners need to brush aside the Hornets today to have any chance at the title. Arsenal do have one more match (eight matches) to play than the others around them. But they are nine points back. Cor!
A lovely day in North London, as Arsenal kick us off. Here is the team news:
Arsenal: Ospina, Bellerin, Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal, Elneny, Coquelin, Sanchez, Ozil, Iwobi, Welbeck.
Subs: Gibbs, Mertesacker, Giroud, Walcott, Chambers, Campbell, Cech.
Watford: Gomes, Nyom, Cathcart, Prodl, Ake, Mario Suarez, Watson, Abdi, Capoue, Ighalo, Deeney.
Subs: Britos, Jurado, Amrabat, Guedioura, Pantilimon, Berghuis, Anya.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire)
Wenger hasn't given up the ghost on Ozil, who made some negative comments in the press about Arsenal's prospects this week.
GOAL! Well, that didn't take long!
Alexis with the opening goal for the Gunners!
Lovely ball floated in from Iwobi and Sanchez pulled a great save out of Gomez. No fear with the rebound. Arsenal in front within five minutes.
If this one continues in this fashion, I may well turn over to the relegation dogfight between Norwich and Newcastle on USA.
The title dogfight between Brighton and Burnley ended up 2-2. Both should be in the playoff frame at the very least.
Leeds are away to Rotherham today. Let's hope we can get to Championship safety.
Welbeck goes down under the shove from Prodl. File that under the "Seen them Given" category.
Blimey! Citeh are already 0-3 up through goals from Fernando, DeBruyne and Aguero.
Two quick goals and West Ham are level with Palace. Lansing and Delaney with the goals at Upton Park.
Norwich have had a goal disallowed against Newcastle, with Dieumerci Mbokani rightly flagged offside.
back from walk and there are goals every where!!!!
Cites are already three up
I now have to go to store!
Busy morning for you, mate. Enjoy!
GOAL! Iwobi notches the second for Arsenal. Great outing for him so far today.
2-0!
Alexis returned the favor from the first goal by providing a slide rule pass to Iwobi for the second there. This one is over.
Bugger! We're down 1-0 to Rotherham (sigh)....
I am back from all my errands.... lots of goals in the Prem
Sorry about your lot
So, 3rd, 4th and 5th place sides all winning. Pressure on 1st, 2nd and 6th
Get the message from MUR?
Three nil Gunners!!
Could they come all the way back!
Rangers take a 3-2 lead at Raith
They could be promoted to the Premiership today
almost a fourth
off the bar
I'm back from my shower and Arsenal have scored a third. So, this one is definitely over. I'm switching over to Carrow Road, where Norwich have a slim 1-0 lead.
Stoke two up
Leeds are still 1-0 down. Come on, you Whites!
How was your shopping, mate?
Don't you love having choices!!
We could watch any game!!
From the Beeb
WHAT A MISS
Norwich 1-0 Newcastle
Posted at
11:09
Miss of the season! Got to be.
Andros Townsend cuts in from the right wing, and his low shot is only parried out to Papiss Cisse. It's a tap in, he could get down and head it in.
But he blazes it yards wide! Shocking...
Derby tie it up in Wales
I've been all over the place this morning
Taking Jon to driving course
Walking dog
trip to the store
Missed all the footer!
Cambridge take the lead at Acrington Stanley
If the scores stay the same
Norwich will have a 4 point lead on Sunderland and 6 ahead of New
Fulham take the lead against MK
It's marvelous having all the choices. We're very spoiled.
Rangers winning
Hibs losing
Auld Firm derbies are going to be back
Pompey take the lead against Carlisle... what a trip for the visitors!
Big penalty appeal from the Norwich supporters but the ref is none too impressed. Play on.
Good decision by Anthony Taylor - no contact at all on Jarvis - he should have been booked.
Rotherham down to ten men
Lovely jubbly - come on, you Whites!
This would be a crucial win for the Canaries.
Alex Neill is kicking every ball now.
I don't want Sunderland to survive
MK Dons tie it up at your place... I think Kate should have made the same
Red card for the Hammers
Kouyate
Swansea get a goal back at Stoke
Kouyate has been sent off for West Ham. Jeff Stelling blog says that it was a dreadful decision by Mark Clattenburg.
GOAL FOR THE TOON
GOAL! Mitrovic may just have saved Newcastle with that flicked header over Ruddy.
1-1!
Cardiff retake lead v Derby
NORWICH RE-TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Several good chances there go begging for Norwich.
GOAL! Mbokani puts Norwich in front again!
I decided to watch the right match in the second half, that's for sure.
Nathan Redman now coming on for Norwich.
Desmond at Upton Park
Very much so
Fulham retake the lead at your place
Thanks for ignoring my joke from the last score update from your place
Desmond at Stoke
Wes Hoolihan now on.
LEEDS TIE IT UP!
Undeserved BTW
Sorry, mate - I missed it. Boom boom!
Top of the table Burton losing at home to Bury
Wigan walloping Shrewsbury
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We'll take it.
Not liking the scores today for City... United better keep pressure on
I like it that Sergio Aguero scored one.
PENALTY FOR THE TOON!!!
Not me
COR! Penalty given to Newcastle. O'Neill raised is arm - called for handball. Tragedy for Norwich.
Desmond at Carrow Road
Mitrovic to take it....
good pen into the bottom corner.
Desmond!
Great pen
Merse thought the pen was almost saved
Wednesday take the lead at Hudders
That's the way to take one; none of this stutter step or Panenka nonsense. Just rifle it into the corner.
Hartlepool two up
Rangers could have been promoted but Raith has a last minute penalty
Penalty saved.... Rangers are going to go up
Walcott makes it 4-0
Leeds are now down to ten men
Sylvestre... the keeper is off
Toon going so close!
Oh - Cisse nearly won it there - Ruddy scrambled across his line to keep it out.
The red card results in a pen... goal to Rotherham
Sorry mate
Uh oh - that sounds like a pen, no?
Bloody Warnock
BUGGGERRRR!
NORWICH SCORE THE WINNER!!!!!!!!!!
GOAL! Hoolihan has won it for Norwich!!!!
Raith... tie it up anyway... no championship for Rangers
Four nil City at Bournemouth
So exciting... americans don't have a clue how exciting this is!!
Aguero again?
Ends 0-0 at SoL
Nope
Kolarov
All over in East Anglia!
What a big goal for the Canaries!!!
Desmond at Upton Park
That's it - Norwich have pulled it out. A huge win over Toon. Sunderland have drawn against WBA so it's a great day for the Canaries.
West Ham have been held by Palace. That's great news for United.
I'm off to do some errands ahead of a party we're going to this afternoon. Cheerio for now, mate. I'll catch you tomorrow morning.
Take care mate
