Derby Day on Tyneside and in Manc Land
It's a huge day in the Premiership with derby matches at both the bottom and the top of the Premiership. We start at the bottom - on Tyneside - with the relegation dogfight between old rivals Newcastle and Sunderland. The Toon have a new boss on board - Rafa Benitez - who knows his way around a derby match. Later, we've got the Manc Derby, which will be crucial in terms of the Champions League places. Join me this morning for all the banter on the LOB.

Morning, chaps - hopefully you’re not going anywhere for a good few hours. It’s Derby Day, and we kick off at 9:30am EST with what has been billed as the biggest Tyne-Wear bunfight in 30 years. Newcastle and Sunderland have both given fans of slapstick plenty to work with this season but it gets rather more serious today: Rafa Benitez’s team sit four points shy of 17th-placed Norwich, and Sam Allardyce’s men three adrift. This is one of two games in hand for both, but the Canaries’ win at West Brom yesterday hastened the need for some proper form to be hit in the north-east.
The team news out of SJP this morning:
Newcastle: Elliot; Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles, Colback; Sissoko, Shelvey, Wijnaldum, Townsend; Perez, Mitrovic. Subs: Darlow, Anita, Taylor, Saivet, De Jong, Riviere, Cisse.
Sunderland: Mannone; Yedlin, Kone, Kaboul, van Aanholt; Kirchhoff, M’Vila, Rodwell, Khazri, Borini; Defoe. Subs: Pickford, Jones, O’Shea, Cattermole, Lens, Toivonen, N’Doye.
Teams coming out at SJP now - this is Kate's favorite part as she loves the kiddies.
Good morning , mate. I'm here to join you for Derby Day as we head into the international break
As Sunderland get us underway wearing their hideous green and yellow away number.
They're off from SJP.
Morning, MUR - Happy Derby Day!
Fred is meowing. He claims that the lime green is too brioght
Cheers, mate. Happy Derby Day to you.
Have you ever seen a green and yellow cat? I'm sure that Fred hasn't.
Robbie and co. were predicting a Sunderland away win today, mainly on the basis that Defoe is more of a goal threat than is Mitrovic. Your thoughts?
Defoe got onto that half chance but blasted over. He's got seven goals from the last ten, so they'll be looking to him.
First corner of the match to Sunderland - they've had the better start.
The Toon attack and Mannone catches a Toon corner . Now the Black Cats win a corner as Van Dijjck heads wide from a Saints corner.
Oh - half chance for Mitrovic - but he got the volley all wrong - ballooned over the bar.
I've never seen one unless it's been spray painted
A great chance for Mitrovic off a through ball from Shelvey and pass from Townsend.
I disagree. I think a draw is likely or even a Toon win since I believe that Toon performances will perform with Raffa in charge
OH!!! Rob Elliott does well to tip over a header from a corner then Kone heads wide from the next corner from Khazri
Perhaps Robbie has a point as Khazri can be dangerous from set pieces for the lime greens
This could easily be settled by one goal.
Shane Long shot wide from a long ball. Shelvey is wide from long range. Mitrovic went down , looking for a pen. He was grasping at straws and drew the short one
Another chance goes begging for the Toon. I just don't think Mitrovic is good enough for a Premiership outfit.
I'm not sure. This match has been more open than I expected.
True - lots of chances at both ends.
Mitrovic is only 21 and has plenty of potential. If the Toon hit form then I'm sure he will too. He hasn't really had the best service in recent matches.
Jack Colback picks up his requisite yellow card.
I'm also watching the Saints vs Pool on a link where POll won 1-6 in the League Cup.
Good for you. You're taking the place of Nocito Sportscaster.
GOAL !!!COUTINHO GIVES POOL THE LEAD WITH A LONG RANGE EFFORT IN THE BOTTOM CORNER. FORMER SAINT, LALLANA , PASSED TO HIM AND HE CUT IN TO SCORE WITH THAT LONG RANGE EFFORT.
Coutinho is on a tear these days.
cHEERS, MATE. aS i WAS UPDATING, dAFOE SHOT INCHES WIDE FROM A PASS FROM rODWELL AND cOLBACK WAS BOOKED AGAINST his former club. His tenth , so he will be suspended for the next match
Mannone was forced to push away a swerving effort from Townsend
Defoe a whisker away from connecting with that cross-shot.
Dafoe just failed to connect from a pass from Khazri
Pool won here 1-6 in the League Cup with Origi netting a hat-trick. The winner in this match puts pressure on the teams chasing 4th place.
BLOODY HELL !!! I MISSED THE CURSE OF NOCITO. I MISSED A GOAL WHILE GETTING A REFILL OF COFFEE. STURRIDGE PUT POOL TWO UP.
Head tennis in the Toon box off a free kick from Khazri. The Toon break through Sissokmo, but he lacked the support and it broke down.
Loveren booked on his return to St. Mary's for a foul on Long.
OH!!! Pool nearly went three up as they broke and Lallana put Wee Joe through with just Forster to beat , but the big keeper stayed big and blocked from the little Welshman
Sturridge shoots straight at Forster from a narrow angle as the Saints were split open yet again
Kaboul fouls Ayoze in the D
Shelvy blasts wide from the free kick - close call.
Shelvey hooks the free kick a few feet wide.
I think the Manc Derby is on the local NBC affiliate.
Maybe the Curse of the Goldstein is to miss a goal while getting coffee?
Naughty by Janmaat on Khazri. He is merely lectured by Martin Atkinson
MArtinia heads out a cross from Flnagan for a Pool corner.
GOAL !!! JOE ALLEN PUTS THREE UP FROM THE CORNER . No it's disallowed for offside as Sakho jumped over the ball as Wee Joe shot, but he was obviously interfering with play. The correct decision from the linesman.
Yellow card for Janmaat for a chippy tug back.
Crikey - Pool are running riot!
Mebemba is booked for a foul on Borini. I'm not sure why as Borini appeared to run into the player, who just stayed his ground
Khazri curls the free kick not too far wide. Just too much bend.
It's Derby Day in Scotland too where the Dundee Derby is being played today. The Tangerines are all but doomed.
Mbemba with a long range effort that's not even close.
Rodwell is high and wide from long range. This match has gone flat
Joe Allen fouls Tadic about thirty yards from goal. Borini wins a corner off of Colback
GOAL !!! DAFOE GIVES THE BLACK CATS THE LEAD.
GOAL! Defoe with a sweet volley from corner. The Black Cats are 0-1 up on the edge of half-time.
Khazri took a short corner to Borini and Rob Elliott pushed a way his long range effort. Janmaat failed to head clear and Dafoe punished that mistake with a well placed volley.
A minute of stoppage time at SJP
Two minutes of stoppage time at St. Mary's
Half-time at the SJP and Sunderland go in one up. The Toon are depressed.
Colback wins a corner off of Yedlin, but there's not time to take it as the Black Cats are one up at the half thanks to a goal on the stroke of halftime from Dafoe.
Sturridge is pushed down by Classie.
The Saints counter off the free kick from Sturridge, but Tadic is flagged offside.
Boos from the home fans as Pool are two up at the half.
The second half has kicked off from SJP
The second half is underway from St. Mary's as Fat Ronnie as made a double substitution
We're back on at the SJP and Newcastle nearly get that equalizer straight from the kick-off. Cor!
Wanayama is on for for Clasie and Mane for Tadic. Both are like for like, so Fat Ronnie is basically stating that he's none too pleased with the first half performance.
Correct. Mitrovic had a volley cleared off the line.
Can is booked for a lunge on Ryan Bertrand.
PENALTY TO THE SAINTS AS SKRTEL IS CALLED FOR A SHIRT PULL ON PELLE IN THE BOX. AN EASY DECISION FOR LEE MASON.. SKRTEL BOOKED FOR THAT
Shelvy into the book for an industrial challenge.
RUDDY NORAH. MINNIE SAVES THE PENALTY FORM THE MINNIE MANE. OH mane OH MANE!
As if Shelvey reads a book.
Decent header there from Perez but straight at Mannone.
Miotrovic should have tied it up as he headed straight to Mannone with a free header and Forster does well to push away a shot from Origi after he turned inside Martina.
Sissoko with a weak volley straight to Mannone
Dafoe has a shot deflect off of Mbemba straight to Rob Elliott.
Rob Eliott tips over a shot from Van Arnholt.
The corner from Khazri is cleared
Oh dear - 1973 Sunderland FA Cup triumph moment with Jim Montgomery in the crowd.
Naughty by Colback on Borini as seems to be begging for a second yellow.
a sight for sore eyes , mate. Monte watching the Black Cats hang on to a 1-0 lead. Isn't that a familiar punch line?
Flanagan heads out for a Saints corner after Minnie miss judged a cross.
Siem De Jong is on for Colback. A wise move from Raffa
Don’t you have to hand it to Jermain Defoe? I think you do. Nobody expected too much from him after he came back from MLS, and last season was a bit of a chore – but if Sunderland stay up this season then much of it will have been down to him. That’s 12 league goals now.
De Jong is welcomed to the Tyne Wear Derby with a crunching tackle.
Minnie does well to turn around a header from Van Dijjck
Absolutely. I didn't expect Dafoe to have this type of impact at this stage in his career.
Chris waddle is twice as wide as he was in his playing days.
Bit of argy bargy now. Of course Mitrovic is involved.
We're all a bit thicker round the middle these days, eh?
The Nocito curse continues as the Saints pulled one back while my link was buggering
anita is on for Janmaat
I guess you could say that , but he's been into the pies and some pints.
JWP is on for Romeu and Benteke is on for Sturridge
John O'Shea is on for Johnny Kaboul
Books on the shelf with a tame long range effort straight to Mannone
I had some laptop troubles, too. Sorry mate.
N'Doye is on for Khazri. I haven't seen him play in ages.
Ayoze has a shot blocked by Kone for a corner.
Cisse is on for Townsend in his first appearance since December as Raffa gambles on his final roll of the dice.
Just wide by Benetke on a Pool break off a nice pass from Lallana on his return to St. Mary's
Cheers, mate. I'm watching that match on a different link now.
Down to just over ten minutes - Newcastle need to start throwing the kitchen sink at this one.
What a change for Newcastle since they had Cisse and Ba as their front pairing.
Manning wasn't happy about that challenge from Cisse but he had to go for it.
brave keeping from Mannone in a crowd of players as Cisse was flagged offside
GOAL! Mitrovic has saved Newcastle! What drama!!!!
GOAL !!! MITROVIC TIES IT UP FOR THE TOON AND CELEBRATES BY TAKING OFF HIS SHIRT.
Wynaldum posted a nice cross to the back stick and Mitrovic met it with power back across the goal.
1-1! Game on!
The Toon still have five minutes and change to win this one. The momentum has certainly swung over to them and the Toon faithful are roaring them on at SJP now.
That was the Toon's first goal since Raffa took over. A trademark Mitrovic goal Wijnaldum, who has been the Toon's best player this season, was played down the right and his superb cross was met by a rising Mitrovic at the far post with a great header.
GOAL !!! THE SAINTS HAVE COME FROM TWO DOWN TO MAKE IT DESMOND
A sweet left footed shot from Pelle in the D that nestled in the far corner. It's tied up in both matches.
I'm sure yellows would take a draw in this fixture.
Supermac in the stands watching his former side.
OH MY GIDDY AUNT. MANE OH MANE! THE COMEBACK IS COMPLETE AS MANE HAS PUT THE SAINTS 3-2 UP. A POOR CHALLENGE FROM SKRTEL ALLOWED THE BALL TO RUN ON TO MANE , WHO GOT BEHIND SAKHO AND FINISHED PAST THE ON RUSHING MINNIE.
I thought that Liverpool were three up at a certain point, no?
Mannone booked for time wasting as there are four minutes of stoppage time.
Joe Allen had a goal disallowed for offside that would have put Pool three up.
Wow!
Into four minutes of stoppage time at SJP.
Klopp is speechless while Ronnie rolled back the years as he jumped for joy.
Mitrovic off for treatment for a bloody lip and Raffa is none too pleased as he has words for the fourth official. I think we've typed those lines before.
Five minutes of stoppage time at St. Mary's
It finishes 1-1 at SJP. A result that doesn't really help either team . Canaries fans will be pleased.
Meanwhile the Saints win 3-2 vs Pool , coming from two goals down
Mane had two goals off the bench and a missed penalty as Fat Ronnie won it with his halftime substitutions. Well done.
That's that, then. A good result for Norwich more than anyone else. Sunderland are now two points back on Norwich and Newcastle are three points back. Both have a match in hand on Norwich.
Next is the Manc Derby on the local NBC and the Spuds vs the Cherries on PLET.
The Toon have their match in hand vs Citeh, so I'm expecting that they will need to get results elsewhere.
Next up - the Manc Derby. The context:
How the mighty have fallen. Sort of. You know what I mean. Of course, lots of clubs would love to trade positions with City or United. Yet by their standards, they are both experiencing hugely disappointing seasons, with fourth-placed City a whopping 15 points behind the leaders, Leicester City, and United cannot afford to lose any more ground in the battle to finish in the qualify for the Champions League.
Here's the team news out of the Etihad.
Man City: Hart; Sagna, Demichelis, Mangala, Clichy; Toure, Fernandinho; Jesus Navas, Silva, Sterling; Aguero. Subs: Zabaleta, Fernando, Kolarov, Caballero, Bony, Iheanacho, Manu Garcia.
Man Utd: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Rojo; Carrick, Schneiderlin; Lingard, Mata, Martial; Rashford. Subs: Depay, Januzaj, Romero, Valencia, Fellaini,Schweinsteiger, Fosu-Mensah.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland)
Correct, mate. A United loss means that they are not even assured of an EL spot next season. A must win for both teams, but for the wrong reasons.
They're off from the Etihad.
An early Citeh corner. The corner from Silva is cleared
The first time since 1991 that neither team has been ion the top three.
Wahey - this one's on NBC so no more satellite scramble.
Come on, United!
I hope that UWS, wherever he is, is taking a peek at this one. He needs to watch it.
YIKES!!!! Harry Kane has given the Spuds the lead seconds into the match
Oh - Navas had a chance there on the volley. Hit it wide. But danger signs there for United.
That's his 20th of the season - and he takes the lead in the PPP Golden Boot stakes. I'm not sure anyone picked him, but I'll check.
Navas volleyed wide off a cross from Sterling that was not properly headed away
I agree. It's not like him to miss a big United match, but he's not been a happy camper recently.
I sure hope the Manc Derby is a better match than the one at OT where neither team had a shot in target until the 82nd minute. I sure don't want to see a repeat as you don't either.
Smalling is booked for foul on Aguero
Ajax have the lead at PSV on Derby/ rivalry day
I'm correct - no one has predicted Harry Kane as top goalscorer. Several, including me, predicted him as the first goalscorer (which he wasn't). The only player close to the top that anyone guessed was Sergio Aguero who is four goals back now on 16.
Rashford wins a corner off of Clichy
A poor corner by Blind was cleared by the first man, but Michael Oliver orders a retake due to shirt pulling by both sides. . Take two is cleared.
De Gea makes a near post from Navas for a corner . Only fourteen minutes for a shot on target . Better than 82 as Fernandinho heads over the corner.
Oh - close call again. Good movement leads to Navas blasting one into Twilight. Out for a corner, which Fernandinho puts over.
RASHFORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a hero!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
RASHFORD SCORES IN HIS FIRST MANC DERBY
What a simple goal. Good ball through by Mata but Rashford had a lot to do. He blew by DiMichaelis as if he was standing still and then slotted by Hart coolly. Marvelous goal.
0-1!
Oh - now it's Martial with a great strike beaten away by Hart.
The goal came seconds after the Citeh corner. Blind passed to Mata , who passed to Mata , who found Rashford . The teenager skipped past the veteran , Di Micelis with ease and finished past Hart
Hart beats away a powerful Kung Fu effort.
The Spuds are two up. Guess who, mate
It finished Desmond in the Dundee Derby. Was it worth the two block trek for the navy blues?
There has been more action in just over a quarter of an hour than the entire Manc Derby played in late October.
a rare shocker in La Liga as Villarral have come from two down vs Barca to make it Desmond midway through the second half.
Di Michelis, who apparently had a sour relationship with LVG at Bayern, heads just wide from a free kick from Silva.
Carrick clears for a Citeh corner.
Blind heads away the corner from Navas, then it's cleared by Carrick
WOW!!! it looks like an early conclusion for Sterling as Fernando looks set to come on in his place. Manny P is clear that he's none too pleased.
Sterling has a problem after being knobbled by Mata. He's being replaced by Fernando.
Fernando is on for Sterling. Was he injured when fouled by Mata?
Did you see that the Spuds are two up. Guess who scored their second goal
Half an hour in. City look remarkably short of ideas at the moment. They've been really flat.
I missed that - is it Kane again?
Juve won 1-4 at Torino in the Turin Derby on Derby Day.
well done, mate. Is that 21 for the season?
Aguero is flagged offside on an attempted Citeh counter. He looked on to me.
Yaya has a low, long range curler that was not too far off.
That is 21 on the season for Kane - he's two goals up on Vardy now. Aguero is now five goals back. He'll need to score a hat-trick to catch up (just kidding!)
Smalling clears a low cross from Navas for a Citeh corner.
I didn't pick Harry Kane because I was expecting a sophomore slump. He's coming on strong late on as he did last season. As a result, I'm feeling a tad sophomoric.
Navas spurns another chance.
Nvas wins a corner off of Rojo.
Rashford heads away the corner from Silva then Mangala fouls Rashford on the break. He should have been booked.
Good one, mate. We've all been Kaned.
Kane is definitely able .I heard it was all cherries when he was playing the slot machines.
Some more passion from LVG as he has word for Andre MArriner, the fourth official. I actually agree Blind is down for a high boot from Aguero.
I guess a foul wasn't called on Blind because Michael Oliver is blind as to what is transpiring.
Blind retaliates by fouling Aguero. It's getting spicy in the Manc Derby as it should,
Blind retaliates by fouling Aguero. It's getting spicy in the Manc Derby as it should,. Citeh take the free kick near the corner flag. it's headed on and Yaya slices wide at the far post as there are two minutes of stoppage time.
Di Michelis appears to foul Rashford in the box then Di Michelis tries to rile up the teenager, accusing him of diving. Poor by Michael Oliver and Di Michelis
Hand bags as Michael Oliver lectures Rashford and Di Michelis.
It's halftime and United are one up at the Etihad thanks to a goal by Rashford in his first Manc Derby.
The Spuds are two up at the half thanks to a double from Harry Kane.
The second half is underway from the Etihad.
Di Michelis, who is having a mare, nearly gifted United a second with a shocking back pass , but Hart was alert with a great slide tackle on Kung Fu Panda.
Hart is down for treatment off that challenge/ Caballero is warming up just in case.
I'm back after lunch - I totally agree with you mate that that was a stone cold penalty. He brought him down. Full stop.
