The Sack Race Heats Up
A very good Saturday morning to all of you. I'm here after a very long, hard week at work looking forward to some relaxing Premiership watching. There are several people who won't be relaxing, though: Premiership managers. This is traditionally the time of year that clubs begin to shed their managers. There are several bosses under pressure this morning. My money is now on Francesco Guidolin, Swansea's hapless gaffer, who faces an in-form Liverpool early doors. If they get mullered today, it could be curtains for the Italian. But it could also be David Moyes, whose Sunderland host West Brom at 10am EST. And what about Mike Phelan? He's not actually the full-time boss at Hull yet but a bad loss to Chelsea could move him along sharpish.
Join me to follow the sack race this morning won't you?
283 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. I had a long , hard week too. Add Sparky to the sack race too. Hughes that is.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board, mate.
There is a lot of buzz around Liverpool these days, but are they real deal title contenders? They have won at both Arsenal and Chelsea and played Spurs off the park at their place too. The front three of Firmino, Coutinho and Mane are buzzing. But their leaky defense doesn't inspire confidence.
Teams coming out at the Liberty now:
Swansea (4-3-3) Fabianski; Rangel, van der Hoorn, Amat, Naughton; Fer, Cork, Britton; Routledge, Borja, Sigurdsson.
Substitutes: Nordfeldt, Mawson, Taylor, Fulton, Ki, Barrow, McBurnie.
Liverpool (4-3-3) Karius; Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner; Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Mane, Firmino, Coutinho.
Substitutes: Mignolet, Sturridge, Klavan, Moreno, Lucas, Can, Origi.
Cheers, Bob. Add an evil Slav to the sack race too. I guess it's a four horse race and a close one at that
Citeh are the main title contenders , but Pool seem to be their main challengers. Who picked those two teams?
I'm off to take Melanie to take the SAT . She and some other people are taking it early to perform in a band competition. I should be back in about ten minutes.
We're nearly set to go now. Jon Champion and Kevin Kilbane on the microphones today.
Cheerio, mate.
Peep peep! Liverpool, in red, kick off from left to right. Swansea are all white on the afternoon.
They're off from the Liberty. A pool win moves them up to second place, two points behind Citeh.
All Liverpool early doors.
Just a reminder of the choices for the sack race:
Ronald Koeman - Blue Devil
David Moyes - Gooner, Someone Said, Yellows
Alan Pardew - MUR
Mike Phelan - Red Devil, Swansong
Francesco Guidolin - Red Dragon, The Saint
Tony Pulis - UWS
Sean Dyche - West Ham Rising
Walter Mazzarri - Simon
The first chance falls to Swansea. Routledge on the right curls a lovely cross over the head of Matip to find the unmarked Borja, who heads over from six yards. He should have scored.
GOAL! And Swansea have taken an early lead. Really poor defending at the corner and when the ball got knocked back across by Borja, it dribbled over to Leroy Fer who won't score an easier goal.
1-0 Swans!
What was I saying about Liverpool's leaky defense?
Swansea's midfielders seem first to the loose ball so far.
Lallana is down getting treatment now - more bad new for Klopp.
I'm back. A poor goal for Pool to concede.
Sigurdsson floats a high, dainty ball over the top of the Liverpool defence to find Cork, who slides forward and helps the ball towards goal as it drops over his shoulder inside the box. He can’t get any pace on it, however, and it’s a comfortable save from Karius.
Welcome back, mate. Your back just in time to see Daniel Sturridge replace the injured Adam Lallana. Will he be available for Gareth Southgate's England squad to meet Malta and Slovenia?
The Gooner was correct. Gareth Southgate is the interim England manager
Oh - Borja should have had another. Free header six yards out. Put it wide.
I don't see how if he has to be fit by Monday
Fred has a prediction. You will love this one. He predicts that Moyes will be sacked and replaced by Fat Sam/
A great chance for Borja, who seems to be an aerial threat.
LOL! Nice one, Fred. I think Fat Sam is looking at a lifetime ban from football, fortunately.
A rare sight as it's a downpour in South Wales.
Agreed, mate. I think it's wishful thinking by our LOB cat
The Toffees were surprisingly held 1-1 by Palace at Goodison yesterday. They seem to be moving down the table.
Jack Cork booked for uncorking a rather naughty challenge.
Sturridge booked for a really horrible attempt to win a penalty
Yes - I had a feeling that Everton were punching above their week in the first few weeks.
The front three for Pool just haven't been clicking today.
A minute before halftime and Pool yet to register a shot on target despite dominating possession.
The Swans are surprisingly one up at the half . It's a Fer Kop.
That's half time and Swansea fans will have a happy half-time cup of Bovril now after that solid performance.
Boom, boom, mate!
Cheers, Bob.
The second half is underway from the Liberty Stadium
Back on at the Liberty. Can Pool turn this one around?
I think Jurgen may have had a word or two at the half. It's always difficult to determine his emotions. Quite a conundrum.
Decent hit from distance by Firmino but smothered by Flappy.
First shot on target for Pool as Flappy saves a long range effort from Firmino that was anything , but firm
The Swans counter after being under the cosh. Then Angel Rangel gets his angles all wrong.
Liverpool pressing their claim early in this half.
Celtic is one up at Crocodile Dundee in the second half. Now that's a knife!
You and Kate continue to be generous hosts in A West London Derby as your old mate, JFH sees his team one up at the half thanks to goal by Northern Ireland international, Connor Washington.
Leon Britton is booked for fouling Sturridge just outside the box.
GOAL! Firmino levels it for Liverpool. That was coming!
Into the wall by Coutinho then
GOAL !!!FIRMINO FIMRLY TIES IT UP AS MILNER HOOFED UP THE REBOUND AND IT GLANCED OFF OF FIRMINO'S HEAD
It all came from a rubbish free kick from Coutinho. Swansea switched off thinking that the danger was over and when the ball was lofted back in, Firmino was alone to nod home from eight yards.
1-1!
Another Pool goal and they're only two points behind Citeh. I'm catching up, mate.
Correct. Lobbed back in from the LUFC Academy.
Flappy with a near post save from Mane.
Just wide by Coutinho from 25 yards out off a nice one two with Wijnaldum
Rangel heads out a cross from Henderson for a corner.
Flappy fists away the corner.
Barrow on for Routledge . He changed the game when he came on vs Chelski
Another change from Guidolin and an attacking one as Ki is on for Leon Britton. Will it be a key decision in Guidolin's future?
Pool win a corner off a tackle that appeared to be a Pool foul.
Borja heads away the corner and Barrow is called for a foul on Clyne on an attempted break.
Clyne with a shot straight at Flappy.
Mane has a shot come off of Kyle Naughton after Milner picked Van Der Horn's pocket
Sturridge heads wide from the corner.
Nice turn from Sturridge but then his pass was wayward.
Swansea look to be playing for a draw now.
The final roll of the dice from Guidolin as Jay Fulton, who was signed from Falkirk four years ago, is on for the scorer , Fer.
JFH's lads still one up at your house. Nice of you to be hospitable to your old, mate.
Barrow tackles Milner for a corner.
The corner is headed away as Pool keep possession.
Matip heads out a cross from Barrow for a rare Pool corner.
Milner heads away the corner from Siggy.
Always, Jimmy is an Elland Road legend.
Borja has a cross blocked for another Swan corner.
Darius went walk about and collided with Borja. Didn't look so clever there.
The corner from Siggy eludes everyone as Karius is down after misjudging the flight of the ball.
He's back up as play resumes.
Did you see that there is not a late Prem match today? The Wolves vs the Canaries is BEIN shown at that time.
Coutinho has a long range effort blocked for a corner.
The corner is headed out for another.
The corner makes it's way out to Sturridge as Pool keep possession.
Penalty to Liverpool!
Milner has scored three already this season.
That's four!
Liverpool 1-2 up!
It was all looking so rosy for Swansea and Guidolin early doors but the Reds have turned this one around.
PENALTY POOL AS AN ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE CLEARANCE FROM BARROW GOES STRAIGHT UP INTO THE AIR THEN RANGEL UPENDS FIRMINO
GOAL!!!! PENALTY DISPATCHED FROM THE LUFC ACADEMY AS FLAPPY IS SENT THE WRONG WAY BLASTED STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE.
A double substitution from Klopp . Origi on for Firmino and Can for Wijnaldum
Flappy with a decent near post save.
Pool up to second , two points behind Citeh. Do you feel me catching up?
This is over. Swansea have nothing left in the tank.
Guidolin out, MUR?
I don't really see Liverpool as realistic title contenders. It's between the two Manc clubs, to my mind.
Four minutes of stoppage time./
He could be . I didn't see him leading the sack race.
I picked Pool to win it and they don't have the distraction of Euro footie, so that will help. Pool host United when the international break ends, so that will let us know ,who the real title contenders are
Celtic scraped by with a 0-1 win at Crocodile Dundee, presumably exhausted due to their exertion vs Citeh in midweek.
Oh - Van Der Horn had a golden opportunity to equalize there. What a chance!
Nearly Desmond as Van Der Horn blows a sour note as he should have scored off a great cross.
Happy birthday, Francesco - there's the door!
The final whistle blows and Guidolin and Swansea have gone down when it seemed likely that they'd at least earn a point here.
It's over as Pool come from behind to win 1-2 at the Liberty. Guidolin is left wondering if it's his last match in charge of the Swans.
A nice birthday wish, mate. How kind.
Liverpool move up to second in the table. They started poorly but the injury to Adam Lallana forced a reshuffle, and moving Philippe Coutinho into midfield sparked them into life. They were deserved winners after completely dominating the last hour of the game.
I'm back for the 10 AMERS where it's the Tigers vs Chelski and Gary Cahill's horrific start to the season is rewarded by being made captain. Brilliant management by Conte.
A momment's applause for what seems to be the passing of a Tigers fan
They're off from the KC
I'm back after a refreshing shower to follow the 10am EST kickoffs. Hull v. Chelsea are on the box but my attention will be on Elland Road where my beloved are hosting Barnsley.
Mbokane fouled just outside the box by the Sideshow. Snoddy to take the fee kick
Courtois does well to tip over the deflected free kick from Snoddy.
The corner from Diamande eludes everyone and is out for a goal kick
The teams out at the KC today:
Hull: Marshall, Meyler, Davies, Livermore, Robertson, Snodgrass, Henriksen, Clucas, Mason, Diomande, Mbokani.
Subs: Maguire, Huddlestone, Hernandez, Maloney, Jakupovic, Weir,
Keane.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Matic, Moses, Willian, Hazard, Costa.
Subs: Begovic, Ivanovic, Fabregas, Oscar, Pedro, Batshuayi, Chalobah.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire)
Early chance for Watford - Ighalo blasts wide.
Are you watching that one on PLET.
Your famous hospitality continues as JFH's lads win a local derby at your place as they win 0-2 heading into the break.
Abe Lincoln takes the lead vs East Anglian side, Braintree.
Bad news for the Hammers - ex LUFC star Sam Byram has pulled up with what looks like a hammy injury. Arbeloa.
UWS will not be pleased that Donny Trump has taken the lead at Fratton Park. Neither would Hillary.
No - I'm watching the Hull v. Blues match but following the Guardian blog feed.
Meyler pushes down Hazard on a solo run
Fortunately - Trump is looking even weaker in the polls this weekend given his shocking debate performance.
Into the wall by the Sideshow
Agreed, but if Hillary hadn't had the stupid mic incident it would be an even larger lead. has that race won it's course or does Donny still have a chance?
A battle of newly promoted sides as high flying Northants takes the lead vs Bristol Rovers. Swindon takes the lead at the Shrews.
One of the most entertaining things about watching Chelsea today is waiting to see when Diego Costa will finally be sent off. He's one yellow card away from a suspension today.
Villa's poor start continues....PNE have taken an early lead.
Richard Burton takes the lead vs Evil Cardiff while a frefalling Villa fall behind at Ridsdale's place.
He might intentionally get booked just to have a week off after the international break
I think it's just about over at this point, because of Trump's mistakes and more than that the demographic advantages that Democrats now have. If you look at the attached map, you'll see that most of the Southwest, with the exception of Texas of course, has now flipped to the Dems.
http://www.electoral-vote.com
I just smelled Bayern take the lead vs Cologne.
Burton have opened the scoring against Cardiff City, with Jackson Irvine doing the honours after 12 minutes.
Boom, boom, mate!
Does it smell of relegation?
even two of the leading conservative newspapers are endorsing Hillary for the first time in their history.
Sorry. I meant a Dem for the first time in their history. Even the military is against Trump. He doesn't get it; the clueless bastard.
Cheers, mate. I need to check the table. I think relegation is always tight in that league
Ryan Mason has a shot blocked for corner that is taken by Snoddy and headed away .
Bob's favorite lyrics : Fleetwood Mac takes the lead vs the Evil Blades.
More good news: Walsall takes the lead vs the Evil Lions.
And more good news as Cambridge takes the lead vs Accrington Stanley
Absolutely, mate. Don't Stop Thinking About Beating the Blades.
Antonio Conte must love drama since his central defensive pairing is a Side Show and a Horror Show.
Vic Moses falls too easily to get a pen, IMHO
Moses flops in the area - nothing doing from referee Taylor.
BOOM BOOM,mate. The Real Dons take the lead vs the Gils while the Evil Lions tie it up at Walsall.
Jeff's lads take the lead at newly promoted Grimsby.
Rochdale takes the lead at freefalling Charlton
Chelsea win their first corner of the match
Sam Baldock has scored with a nice lob to put Brighton a goal up against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, where the team from London-on-the-sea have never, ever won.
David Marshall does well to catch a corner from Willian
No better time than the present to change that
Cheers, mate!
Bradford City take the lead at Chesterfield
How does anyone expect Chelsea to challenge for the title based on this performance.
snoddy fouled on the counter then Victor Moses fouls Andy Robertson near the touchline.
Diego Costa clears away a free kick from Snoddy for a Tigers corner/. A poor corner from Snoddy is cleared by the first man then Henriksen is called for a foul on Courtois.
Moses is the latest recipient of a yellow card from Anthony Taylor.
Callum Wilson opens the scoring at Vicarage Road to put Bournemouth ahead with a header after 31 minutes. It squeezed under Heurelho Gomes, who possibly should have done a little better to keep it out.
Courtois is statisically listed as the worst keeper in the Prem, but it's early doors as Victor Moses is booked for cumulative infractions
Notts Forest have gone a goal up against high flying Bristol City.
That's a battle of sophomores if I'm not mistaken. Rather sophomoric by Gomes, who must feel like gnomes.
I'm sure you would like the Robins to come crashing down after that midweek result.
Nacer Chadli scores his third goal in three games for the Baggies, who takes advantage of the home defence’s generosity to give the visitors a 1-0 lead on 35 minutes.
I'd be fine with that, yes.
Newport County vs Stevenage and Notts County vs Morecambe and Wide have been postponed. I wonder why
Marcus Alonso heads wide from a cross from Victor Moses.
Donny Trump goes two up at Fratton PArk. The only chance he has of winning against a blue team.
Jeff's lads go two up at Grimsby.
Coventry take the lead at Port Vale.
Now it's Matic in the book - that might have been his second. Chelsea certainly racking up the cards under Mou.
Matic booked for a high foul on Henriksen
Rangers take the lead vs PArtick Thistle in an all Glasgow battle.
Mou at Chelsea. No, but you can Conte on them racking up the cards.
Rangers now two up vs the Glasgow Thistles.
The Toon take the lead at Rotterdam and horrible start to the season continues for Villa as they are two down at Ridsdale's house.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
kyle bartley gives leeds the lead vs the tykes.
Liverwurst booked for the Tigers as we enter two minutes of stoppage time.
Costa called for a foul on Henriksen , which ends a spell of sustained Chelsea pressure.
Courtois does well to turn around a long range effort from Ryan Mason.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Our new boy Kyle Bartley has opened the scoring for Leeds at the stroke of half-time.
The corner from Snoddy is headed away and it's 0-0 at the half/. So far, so good for the Tigers
And that's half-time at the KC 0-0. A bit dismal really.
The second half is underway from the KC.
A really stinky performance from Bayern as Cologne tie it up at the Allianz Arena
What a pong!
Snoddy wins a corner off of Azpi after turning Marcus Alomso. courtois catches the corner from Snoddy
Nice run and shot by Hazard - first real flash of quality from him all match. Well tipped over.
David Marshall does well to tip over a long range effort from Hazard. Their first shot on target
Championship scores as we begin the second half:
Fulham 1-2 QPR (result). Birmingham City 0-0 Blackburn Rovers, Brentford 0-0 Wigan Athletic, Bristol City 0-1 Nottingham Forest, Burton Albion 1-0 Cardiff City, Ipswich Town 0-0 Huddersfield, Leeds United 1-0 Barnsley, Preston 2-0 Aston Villa, Reading 0-0 Derby County, Rotherham United 0-1 Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Brighton. Wolves v Norwich is a 5.30 kick-off.
The corner is cleared by Liverwurst for another . The next one is clared away then the return cross is cleared then Kante he score? No he can't as he shoots straight to David Marshall.
Will you be around for the late Championship match? It's BEIN shown on the telly.
Burton have gone two goals up against Evil Cardiff, a glancing header from Lucas Akins doubling their lead after 49 minutes.
Richard Burton goes two up vs Evil Cardiff/.
Sorry, mate - I'll be off to the supermarket to pick up ingredients for a cabbage dish that we're bringing to an Oktoberfest party later tonight.
The Real dons go two up vs the Gils.
Have a great time at Oktoberfest. I wish I was there. You sure didn't waste any time on that one.
Pompey pull one back vs Donny Trump, trailing 1-2. It's 1-1 between Argyle and Yeovil
Luton are definitely not in Bedfordshire as they're off to the races , taking the lead at Cheltenham Horse Race.
The FAke Dons take the lead at Oldham. Great news as Walsall regain the lead vs the Evil Lions. Now 2-1.
The Shrews tie it up vs Swindon
The Hornets tie it up vs the Cherries in an all sophomore battle.
More woes for the Hammers - they've gone a goal down to Boro at home. Stuani on the scoresheet again.
