Farewell, Shite Fart Lane!
We say goodbye today to another classic London stadium - White Hart Lane. I can well remember many a weekend making that long walk down Seven Sisters Road to see Spurs play during the Glenn Hoddle era. We have a fitting final match at the Lane today, with United showing up to pay tribute. Before that, we have the relegation battle of Hull v. Palace and Liverpool's crucial visit to West Ham. Join me for all the fun this morning.
276 Comments:
Morning, everyone. I'm joining the early match at the beginning of the second half, having made the executive decision to get a wee bit of extra kip after a long workweek.
Hull are 2-0 down at Palace in a match they must win in order to have any chance of staying up. They need three goals in this second half. Tough ask.
The teams:
Crystal Palace: Hennessey, Ward, Kelly, Tomkins, Schlupp, Cabaye, Milivojevic, Puncheon, Zaha, Christian Benteke, Townsend. Subs: Speroni, Van Aanholt, Flamini, Campbell, McArthur, Sako, Delaney.
Hull: Jakupovic, Maguire, Ranocchia, Dawson, Elmohamady, N’Diaye, Clucas, Robertson, Evandro, Niasse, Grosicki. Subs: Davies, Huddlestone, Elabdellaoui, Maloney, Mbokani, Marshall, Bowen.
Referee: Martin Atkinson.
Zaha and Benteke, the two danger men, with the goals for Palace in the first half.
The hour mark cometh and Hull have used all of their subs. Desperate times for the Yorkshire side.
Palace make their first change, taking Cabaye off and bringing McArthur on.
Hull are pushing men forward, as they must, but leaving themselves wide open to Palace breakaways. A goal at one end or the other is surely coming.
And Palace nearly score it! Puncheon wins the ball and gives it to Zaha, who hits a lovely, long early cross to Beneteke, who volleys wide!
Townsend hobbles off to be replaced by Van Arnholt.
Inside the final quarter of an hour. Still 2-0 Palace.
Oh - McArthur found Benteke really well there but the big striker volleyed it back across goal rather than hitting the target.
That's torn it. Schlupp races down the pitch and is brought down by Dawson. Penalty Palace!
Milivojevic takes and....
scores! 3-0 Palace!
That'll just about do it - Palace are staying up and Hull will be playing us at Elland Road next season.
Not a good year for the Northeast sides - Hull, Boro and Sunderland all dropping out of the Premiership. Newcastle will be going up champions and will be the only Northeast representatives in the Prem next season.
GOAL! Van Arnholt makes it four! Four times the misery for Hull.
That's it - Palace have won 4-0 and have done themselves and Swansea a huge favor. Hull are officially relegated.
Next up, West Ham v. Liverpool. The Hammers crushed Spurs' title dreams a couple of weeks back; today they may do the same thing to Liverpool's Champions League dreams.
If Liverpool fail to win today, Arsenal merely have to win their two last home matches - against Sunderland in midweek and against Everton next Sunday to pip them for fourth.
Hey Bob
I am around this morning for some of the matches... Gotta take care of Kathy on this Mother's Day too
Palace relegate Hull so everything is done and dusted in the Premier League except top four places
Liverpool don't win and who'da thunk it... Arsenal have it in the own hands to make Top Four...United just keep blowing their chances!!
Why do United have to close London stadiums? Last season Upton Park. This season White Hart Lane
Good morning, Bob. I expected a more competitive match than 4-0. All that's remaining to play for is fourth place.
Both Championship playoffs are going into the second legs even
Ful Read 1-1
Hud Wed 0-0
I am off for walkies in between raindrops
I'll be back
Good morning, UWS. Agreed about closing the London stadiums.
They're off from Upton Park.
COME ON YOU 'AMMERS
Morning, chaps - great to have you on board for these two London affairs.
The team news for this one:
West Ham United: Adrian; Fonte, Reid, Collins; Byram, Fernandes, Nordtveit, Cresswell; Lanzini, Ayew; Calleri. Subs: Randolph, Feghouli, Snodgrass, Ogbonna, Fletcher, Quina, Rice.
Liverpool: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner; Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana; Origi, Sturridge, Coutinho. Subs: Karius, Moreno, Grujic, Alexander-Arnold, Lucas, Klavan, Woodburn.
The injured Andy Carroll enjoying an afternoon coffee.
Sounds like us, but with morning coffees.
It's a trio of London matches in a bizarre Mummy's Day coincidence.
Oh - LUFC Academy boy had an early chance to break Liverpool hearts. Hit it wide!
OH!!!! Great counter by the hammers and Calleri superbly puts through Sam Byram , who shoots just wide.
He assisted with the winner against the Spuds . More of that today, please
Fonte tackles former Saints teammate, Lallana for a Pool corner.
Oh - now it's Liverpool with a huge chance. Matip rises to meet Coutinho's corner with an immense header, that bounces down off the turf and hits the underside of the bar and goes out.
OH!!!! Matip with a header from the corner off the underside of the bar then cleared another Pool corner that is taken by Coutinho again . This one is cleared away
Liverpool have often used a yellow away kit in the past but not this shade of day-glo safety yellow. Do not like.
Minnie turns around a long range effort from Fernandes.
Agreed. Steve Miller sang " It's Time For a Pair of Cheap Sunglasses."
Coutinho at the end of a good Liverpool move there. Rifles one straight at Adrian.
LOL! Nice one, mate!
Sturridge is well offside . A feeling of familiarity for him!
Cheers, mate.
Championship Sunday will be a letdown as there will only be four meaningful matches and in not one single match will both teams have something to play for other than pride.
Origi was down for a while and finally play stops.
The Premiership only have themselves to blame, having scheduled a lot of marquee matches in odd times. Chelski winning the title on a Friday night was ridiculous!
Short sleeve shirt weather,at least in the southern half of England.Sunny and in the mid 60s. Ideal for watching a match.
Absolutely agree. I think that's the first time the Prem has been clinched on a Friday night. Even the midweek matches are only meaningful for one team and none tomorrow.
Ajax two up at Willhem II. Prince Willie will not be pleased.
Lanzini went down too easily to win a free kick.
Coutinho with a dipping long range effort that was not tot far off.
What is your opinion on the Championship playoff results?Sounds like they're both still in the balance and typically cagey affairs
I sympathize with Marco Silva. I really don't blame him for the Tigers relegation. Mike Phelan left him in a really bad solution and if he had been in charge all season they would have finished mid table.
GOAL !!! STURRIDGE GIVES POOL THE LEAD.
I am back from walkies.. I don't know what I want to happen here
I don't want Liverpool OR Arsenal to make the top four... which do I want less?
I have no confidence that United will get the nine points up for grabs
Jose will park the bus today... they have not scored an away goal against any of the top six teams... Chelsea 0-4, Spurs TBA, City 0-0, Pool 0-0, Arsenal 0-2
GOAL... POOL TAKE THE LEAD!!
That's the way to round a keeper
Calleri was tackled in the Pool box. Several passes later, a through ball from Coutinho found Sturridge, who beat the offside trap. He easily rounded Adrian to score.
Welcome back, UWS. Perfect timing. It seems that Pool and Citeh will be in the CL.
Before Moyes got to Old Trafford.... under Fergie, Fat Ron, Doc, O'Farrell, Busby...maybe not Sexton....United always went out to WIN the game not to NOT LOSE
NO LONGER THE CASE
Winnie Reid heads out for a Pool corner.
Matip heads the corner from Coutinho well over.
Agreed. Also, Jose is putting all his eggs in the EL basket. Watch him put out the reserves at St. Mary's and next Sunday vs Palace.
Back after making some oatmeal for Katie, who's feeling a bit poorly this morning.
Lallana wins a Pool corner. Matip, for the third time this match, with a header from a Coutinho corner. This one is just over.
Feynoord won the title in Holland today
They won 2-0 at home to hold off United's EL Cup Final opponent... Ajax won 3-0 away from home!
United will struggle against them
Looked on UEFA website... Ajax are considered the home team in the Final.... I am taking a sickie that day... possible uncontrollable diarrhea!!!
Welcome back. Wishing Kate a speedy recovery.
A rare Daniel Sturridge goal for the punters.
I may do the same. Not sure yet. Ajax finished a point behind their arch rivals and will be forced to a CL playoff unless they win the final, where they will automatically qualify for the group stages.
oooh, The Hammers hit the post twice from yards!!
Oh - how did that not go in. Ayew had the freedom of the London Stadium. And two bites at the cherry!
OH!!!! How did Ayew not score? Hit's the post while sitting on his bum from a yard out. Missed a wide open goal.
I agree with what is said in this article
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4503182/Jose-Mourinho-specialist-failure.html
A pair of minutes of stoppage time.
Ajax won 0-3 at Willem II. Prince Willie will not be pleased.
Stoppage time now in this crackling first half.
Ht... Pool fans are happy campers
Half time at the London Stadium. Liverpool go in 0-1 up but this one is still on a knife's edge.
Pool is one up at the half thanks to a goal by Sturridge on one of his few touches of the matches.
Not happy about the timing of the last match at SFL. The Spuds will be up for the match and know that a win will clinch second place. It will be tough for United.
We are off again
Back on for the second half now - the Hammers have it all to do.
The second half is underway from the London Stadium
Nice vs Angers in the French League today. Do we second that emotiobn.
Struth... Liverpool almost double their sharpish!!
Oh - Liverpool nearly added to their lead. Sturridge had a big chance. Two saves by Adrian.
OH!!! Adrian had to block from origi from close range then Lallana had a shot blocked as Pool nearly went two up.
It's clear that the Day-Glo Yellows are trying to kill this one off quickly.
Pool win a corner.
Can heads well wide from the corner.
Have I gloated enough this weekend about officially being on summer vacation?
Welcome back. Will you be emotional when Nice hosts Angers today?
Not quite, mate. It's well earned. If I wasn't teaching Summer school then may vacation would start the day of the CL Final.
Yellow card for a niggly one from Edmilson Hernandez. Naughty boy.
Should I be emotional about that one. Sorry - you've gone over my head there.
Eddy Fernandes receives the first booking of the match for a foul on Coutinho. The card matches the opponents jerseys
Nice and Agers are two contrasting emotions. It may have been lost in the translation, LOL!
I've been disappointed by the Hammers so far too. They're playing at home and yet are allowing Liverpool to dominate.
Sam Byram was the player that kept Sturridge onside for the goal. Sorry, mate.
A double substitution by Slaven. Feghouli for Calleri and Fletcher for Fonte. A more attacking formation for the Hammers.
Adrian fists away a Pool free kick. Rocky would be pleased.
Bilic has seen enough: Feghouli and Fletcher are soon to come on; in fact they’re coming on now, Fonte and Calleri departing.
West Ham have reverted to a back-four - and four in midfield, with two up front. How quaint!
I'm sure you and the Gooner will be looking forward to the SFL farewell on goal zone after the match.
Oh - Wynaldum off the post.
GOAL! Coutinho does find the net!
GOAL !!!! COUTINHO PUTS POOL TWO UP WITH A WELL PLACED LONG RANGE EFFORT SECONDS AFTER WIJNALDUM HAD A SHOT CRASH OFF THE BA
West Ham never recovered after that looping effort struck the bar. They allowed Coutinho to pick up the pieces and weave his way into a shooting position. Bottom left corner.
0-2!
I thought the volley from Wijnaldum that crashed off the bar was a better effort than the shot that scored.
An hour gone and it's hard to see the Hammers getting back into this one. Jon Champion is suggesting that Leeds old boy Snodgrass should come off the bench now.
Fegouli has a shot deflected for a corner after a cross from Lanzini was headed out.
Feghouli had a chance off the volley there. Deflected out for a corner.
From the corner there are loads of shouts for a penalty!
Liverpool run it down the pitch and score through Coutinho!
Bilic is livid!
GOAL !!! COUTINHO PUTS POOL THREE UP WITH HIS SECOND IN MINUTES!
Should the referee have stopped the match for Winston Reid to receive treatment? Well, he played on and Liverpool are 0-3 up.
James Collins got a yellow card for protesting after the incident.
Liverpool are rampant now!
The Hammers were distracted as the corner Fegouli was headed away. An accidental elbow by Wijnaldum caught Winnie Reid's face. Pool countered and it concluded with Coutinho passing to Lallana, who passed to Wijnaldum , who found Coutinho all alone in the Hammers box with the Hammers back four caught ball watching and Coutinho easily smashed home from close range.
What a difference it would have made if the ref had given a penalty for the challenge of Wijnaldum on Reid.
1-2 rather than 0-3.
I think the ref made the right decision to play on. They lost concentration on the counter and paid the price. Three goals as well as three points for Pool.
Can fouls Fegouli just outside the Pool box.
A waste of a free kick from Lanzini. Well over.
Since this one is done and dusted, I may leave a little early to take Sparky walkies ahead of the farewell match at SFL.
If the Hammers sign Zaba, then it will be hard for Sam Byram to break into the starting lineup.
Ashley Fletcher got behind the Pool back four, but took one touch too many and his shot was blocked by Minnie from a narrow angle.
Winnie Reid fouls Origi just outside the Hammers box.
An unusually poor free kick from Coutinho makes it halfway to SFL.
That makes sense - I'm sure that Sparky is pining for a walkies.
It will be tough for the Gunners to finish in the top four with Citeh hosting the Baggies and away to the Hornets while Pool conclude with already relegated Middlesbrough at Anfield. Hard to see Citeh or Pool slipping up in any of those matches.
Snoddy about to appear for the Hammers. I still miss him.
He has been for a while and the life seems to have been taken for this match.
Bloody hell - it's 0-4!
GOAL !!! ORIGI PUTS POOL FOUR UP AS THIS ONE OS GETTING OUT OF HAND.
More Keystone Kops defending from the Hammers. They had a million chances to clear but Origi pops up at the back post to side foot it home.
This one is starting to look like training ans far too easy for Pool as they were passing the ball around far too easily. After many passes, Sturrdge passed to Lallana, whose close range effort was blocked by Adrian and Origi passed the rebound into the back of the net.
Agreed about Snoddy. He must be glad to be at the Hammers instead of the Tigers. Strange that he was dealt by the Tigers.
The Hammers will be doing a lap of honor at the conclusion of this match. How is being thrashed at home an honor.
Liverpool absolutely romping away with it
United have no realistic chance of catching them so the three league matches coming up for United have no real pressure to get any points.... don't go out to not lose.. go out and try and entertain and win
He was decent for Norwich for a while but I don't think he's ever lived up to his promise in the Premiership.
Agreed. We need to ruin the SFL farewell. The Gunners CL hopes seem to be slipping away.
Liverpool are looking pretty safe now. What about Citeh though? They'll be Arsenal's next target. I don't think United have a realistic chance at top four now. Sorry, lads.
Two scores so far in London today
4-0 and 0-4... what about the third??
Agreed. He, like may players has found the step yup from the Championship to the Prem a huge transition.
Citeh host the Baggies Tuesday and conclude at Vicarage Road next Sunday. I see maximum points for Citeh in both matches.
A sweet left footed volley by Snoddy not too far over.
Citeh have West Brom at home on Tuesday and Watford away on the last day. Hard to see them losing both of those.
There are games almost all week this week in the Premier League
Monday
Chelsea Watford
Tuesday
Arsenal Sunderland
Man City WBA
Wednesday
Soon Man U
Thursday
Leicester Spurs
Nothing Friday and Saturday
You beat me to it, Statto!
With four goals in the matches at the Capital, Desmond may be itching to watch the farewell match at SFL. That's splitting the difference.
It appears that there will be little to play for on "Championship Sunday." No wonder NBC is trotting out the documentary about the last ditch Citeh win. They've been living on that for years now.
LOL, chaps. It seems like Citeh and Pool will join Chelsea and the Spuds in the CL. United if they take Ajax to the cleaners.
Lucas on for Sturridge as Jurgen shuts up shop ahead of the trip back to Merseyside.
I was supposed to play last weekend but I didn't, no game this weekend but one next weekend
My principal wants me to play for his Over 40 league
Not sure if I can.. haven't played since I was playing in my Over 30 team when I was mid to late 40s... You may have been there for one of my last games Bob
Agreed. Will it even be worth it to watch the matches next Sunday. An anti-climatic conclusion to the season.
Celta Vigo getting crushed 0-3 at Alaves...United SUCK
It would be great if you could make a comeback. I'm sure you still have a few goals left in your locker.
Liverpool are the type of team that only draws at home to Boro.... could they do it again?
In my Over 40s league I was still knocking them in... I way past it now tho
Off for walkies before the late match.
Enjoy your walkies, mate!
Very disappointing from the Hammers today - they could have kept this season alive.
All over at the London Stadium
Full time: Klopp celebrates, as that one lifts his side into third spot again and virtually assures them CL football.
FIVE CENTER BACKS FOR UNITED...ONE UP TOP
BLOODY HELL
I am fed up with Jose making all excuses and complaining
Teams in the tunnel about to come out at the Lane for the last time
Back in time for the farewell match from SFL. The S represents how United will probably play today.Wish it was Roon's farewell match.
I guess the best choices for next Sunday seem to be the Foxes vs the Cherries because both teams always try to play good footie no matter what's at stake. The winner could finish the season in 8th place. Also Chelsea vs the Black Cats to watch Chelsea lift the Prem trophy and to see if that will finish a cricket score.
They're off from the final ever match to be played at SFL.
Missed the first 12 seconds.. wrong channel
Arlo says lots of history at the Lane. The Spuds winning a top flight title is ancient history.
Correct. They switched over to NBCSN unless watching Total Gym for $14.95 is more interesting, which it may turn out to be.
Delli sandwiches the ball off of Bailey for a Spuds corner.
That didn't take long
Looks what happens when a decent cross comes in
DMAN IT! WNAYAMA OF ALL PEOPLE HEADS THE SPUDS INTO THE LEAD OFF A CROSS FROM BEN DAVIES FROM A SHORT CORNER.
Agreed. How about the short corner?
It didn't Mata that it was a poor header due to offside after seeing Blind put in a great cross.
Will this finish 4-0 ?
That's what my money is on
Toby heads out a cross from Bailey for a United corner.
Decent cross by Bailly...no one was in the box
Roon heads over from the corner.
Rooney has a chance with a header... over
United will be hard pressed to play out of the back.
Arlo's favorite player growing up... Glenda!
Glenn Hoddle in attendance in the farewell match.
He was probably the most exciting English player of his era.
Martial hits one just wide!
OH!!! United nearly tie it up as a shot is karate chopped inches wide as he beat his international teammate, but was not quite on target.
What a chance for Son... Great save by De Gea but it was right at him... just place it to the side
OH!!! Number One Son was clean through off a some pathetic United challenges. Shot straight at De Gea then the rebound was blasted well wide. That could have been 2-0.
He shot more like Number Two Son.
Harry Kane wins a corner off of Smalling After skipping past a United corner.
Kane beats De Gea to the ball off a cross from Eriksen, but thankfully, it lands in row M
United going direct.... the wrong way!!
PHEW!!! De Gea struggled with a deflected cross that was eventually hacked away by Bailey
De Gea needs to save another one
Jose has already said he's not starting in the Final
MADNESS
Agreed. It's like driving a car the wrong way down a one way street.
Agreed. He's doing like Barca where he has his league keeper and his cup keeper.
Another chance for a Spurs cross
Rooney complaining of course
Wasabi headed away the free kick from Eriksen
Great hit by Dele... Great save
De Gea does well to tip over an effort from the Deli.
The corner from Eriksen is headed out by Jones for another.
Smalling heads away the next Eriksen corner.
